Superconductivity in LiOHFeS single crystals with a shrunk c-axis lattice constant

By using a hydrothermal ion-exchange method, we have successfully grown superconducting crystals of LiOHFeS with ${T_c}$ of about 2.8 K. Being different from the sister sample (Li${_{1-x}}$Fe${_x}$)OHFeSe, the energy dispersion spectrum analysis on LiOHFeS shows that the Fe/S ratio is very close to 1:1, suggesting an almost charge neutrality and less electron doping in the FeS planes of the system. Comparing with the non superconducting LiOHFeS crystal, each peak of the X-ray diffraction pattern of the superconducting crystal splits into two, and the diffraction peaks locating at lower reflection angles are consistent with that of non-superconducting ones. The rest set of diffraction peaks with higher reflection angles is corresponding to the superconducting phase, suggesting that the superconducting phase may has a shrunk c-axis lattice constant. Magnetization measurements indicate that the magnetic shielding due to superconductivity can be quite high under a weak magnetic field. The resistivity measurements under various magnetic fields show that the upper critical field is quite low, which is similar to the tetragonal FeS superconductor.

D3-D5 theories with unquenched flavors

We construct the string duals of the defect theories generated when N_f flavor D5-branes intersect N_c color D3-branes along a 2+1 dimensional subspace. We work in the Veneziano limit in which N_c and N_f are large and N_f/N_c is fixed. By smearing the D5-branes, we find supergravity solutions that take into account the backreaction of the flavor branes and preserve two supercharges. When the flavors are massless the resulting metric displays an anisotropic Lifshitz-like scale invariance. The case of massive quarks is also considered.

Analog electromagnetically induced transparency for circularly polarized wave using three dimensional chiral metamaterials

In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a three dimensional metamaterial that can motivate electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) by using circular polarized wave as stimulations. The unit cell consists of a pair of metallic strips printed on both sides of the printed circuit board (PCB), where a conductive cylinder junction is used to connect the metal strips by drilling a hole inside the substrate. When a right circularly polarized wave is incident, destructive interference is excited between meta-atoms of the 3D structure, the transmission spectrum demonstrates a sharp transparency window. A coupled oscillator model and an electrical equivalent circuit model are applied to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the coupling mechanism in the EIT-like metamaterial. Analysis in detail shows the EIT window's amplitude and frequency are modulated by changing the degree of symmetry breaking. The proposed metamaterial may achieve potential applications in developing chiral slow light devices.

Upper critical field and quantum oscillations in tetragonal superconducting FeS

The magnetoresistance and magnetic torque of FeS are measured in magnetic fields $B$ of up to 18 T down to a temperature of 0.03 K. The superconducting transition temperature is found to be $T_c$ = 4.1 K, and the anisotropy ratio of the upper critical field $B_{c2}$ at $T_c$ is estimated from the initial slopes to be $Γ(T_c)$ = 6.9. $B_{c2}(0)$ is estimated to be 2.2 and 0.36 T for $B \parallel ab$ and $c$, respectively. Quantum oscillations are observed in both the resistance and torque. Two frequencies $F$ = 0.15 and 0.20 kT are resolved and assigned to a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface cylinder. The carrier density and Sommerfeld coefficient associated with this cylinder are estimated to be 5.8 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$ carriers/Fe and 0.48 mJ/(K$^2$mol), respectively. Other Fermi surface pockets still remain to be found. Band-structure calculations are performed and compared to the experimental results.

Safety Certified Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control under Unreliable Inter-vehicle Communications

Cooperative adaptive cruise control(CACC) system provides a great promise to significantly reduce traffic congestion while maintaining a high level of safety. Recent years have seen an increase of using formal methods in the analysis and design of cooperative adaptive cruise control systems. However, most existing results using formal methods usually assumed an ideal inter-vehicle communication, which is far from the real world situation. Hence, we are motivated to close the gap by explicitly considering non-deterministic time delay and packet dropout due to unreliable inter-vehicle communications. In particular, we consider a passive safety property, which requests a vehicle to avoid any collisions that can be considered as its fault. Under the assumption that the communication delay is bounded and we know the upper bound, we then formally verify the passivity safety of a class of hybrid CACC systems. This result allows us to define a safe control envelope that will guide the synthesis of control signals. Vehicles under the CACC within the safe control envelope are guaranteed to avoid active collisions.

SafeGuardPF: Safety Guaranteed Reactive Potential Fields for Mobile Robots in Unknown and Dynamic Environments

An autonomous navigation with proven collision avoidance in unknown and dynamic environments is still a challenge, particularly when there are moving obstacles. A popular approach to collision avoidance in the face of moving obstacles is based on model predictive algorithms, which, however, may be computationally expensive. Hence, we adopt a reactive potential field approach here. At every cycle, the proposed approach requires only current robot states relative to the closest obstacle point to find the potential field in the current position; thus, it is more computationally efficient and more suitable to scale up for multiple agent scenarios. Our main contribution here is to write the reactive potential field based motion controller as a hybrid automaton, and then formally verify its safety using differential dynamic logic. In particular, we can guarantee a passive safety property, which means that collisions cannot occur if the robot is to blame, namely a collision can occur only if the robot is at rest. The proposed controller and verification results are demonstrated via simulations and implementation on a Pioneer P3-AT robot.

Downlink Performance of Pilot-Reused HetNet with Large-Scale Antenna Arrays

Considering a heterogeneous network (HetNet) where both macro base station (BS) and small cell (SC) nodes are equipped with massive antennas, this paper studies the performance for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlinks when the macro and small cells share the same spectrum and hence interfere with each other. Suppose that the large-scale antenna arrays at both macro BS and SC nodes employ maximum-ratio transmission (MRT) or zero-forcing transmission (ZFT) precoding, and transmit data streams to the served users simultaneously. A new pilot reuse pattern among SCs is proposed for channel estimation. Taking into account imperfect channel state information (CSI), capacity lower bounds for MRT and ZFT are derived, respectively, in closed-form expressions involving only statistical CSI. Then asymptotic analyses for massive arrays are presented under specific power scaling laws. Subsequently, two user scheduling algorithms, greedy scheduling algorithm and asymptotical scheduling algorithm (ASA), are proposed based on derived capacity lower bounds and asymptotic analyses, respectively. ASA is demonstrated to be a near optimal in the asymptotic regime and has low complexity. Finally, the derived closed-form expressions are verified to be accurate predictors of the system performance by Monte-Carlo simulations. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of asymptotic analysis and proposed user scheduling schemes.

Strong coupling superconductivity revealed by scanning tunneling microscope in tetragonal FeS

We investigate the electronic properties of the tetragonal FeS superconductor by using scanning tunneling microscope/spectroscopy. It is found that the typical tunneling spectrum on the top layer of sulfur can be nicely fitted with an anisotropic s-wave or a combination of two superconducting components in which one may have a highly anisotropic or nodal like superconducting gap. The fittings lead to the maximum superconducting gap $Δ_{max}\approx$ 0.90$\;$meV, which yields a ratio of 2$Δ_{max}/k_BT_c\approx$ 4.65. This value is larger than that of the predicted value 3.53 by the BCS theory in the weak coupling limit, indicating a strong coupling superconductivity. Two kinds of defects are observed on the surface, which can be assigned to the defects on the S sites (four-fold image) and Fe sites (dumbbell shape). Impurity induced resonance states are found only for the former defects and stay at zero-bias energy.

Graph duality as an instrument of Gauge-String correspondence

We explore an identity between two branching graphs and propose a physical meaning in the context of the gauge-gravity correspondence. From the mathematical point of view, the identity equates probabilities associated with $\mathbb{GT}$, the branching graph of the unitary groups, with probabilities associated with $\mathbb{Y}$, the branching graph of the symmetric groups. In order to furnish the identity with physical meaning, we exactly reproduce these probabilities as the square of three point functions involving certain hook-shaped backgrounds. We study these backgrounds in the context of LLM geometries and discover that they are domain walls interpolating two AdS spaces with different radii. We also find that, in certain cases, the probabilities match the eigenvalues of some observables, the embedding chain charges. We finally discuss a holographic interpretation of the mathematical identity through our results.

Possible superconducting fluctuation and pseudogap state above $T_c$ in CsFe$_2$As$_2$

Resistive, magnetization, torque, specific heat and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements are carried out on the hole heavily doped CsFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. A characteristic temperature $T^*\sim13$ K, which is several times higher than the superconducting transition temperature $T_c=2.15$ K, is observed and possibly related to the superconducting fluctuation or the pseudogap state. A diamagnetic signal detected by torque measurements starts from the superconducting state, keeps finite and vanishes gradually until a temperature near $T^*$. Temperature dependent resistivity and specific heat also show kinks near $T^*$. An asymmetric gap-like feature with the energy of 8.4 meV and a symmetric superconducting related gap of 2.2 meV on the scanning tunneling spectra are detected, and these pseudogap-related features disappear at temperatures up to at least 9 K. These observations by different experimental tools suggest the possible existence of superconducting fluctuation or pseudogap state in the temperature range up to 4 - 6 times of $T_c$ in CsFe$_2$As$_2$.

$T^4$ fibrations over Calabi-Yau two-folds and non-Kahler manifolds in string theory

We construct a geometric model of eight-dimensional manifolds and realize them in the context of type II string theory. These eight-manifolds are constructed by non-trivial $T^{4}$ fibrations over Calabi-Yau two-folds. These give rise to eight-dimensional non-Kahler Hermitian manifolds with $SU(4)$ structure. The eight-manifold is also a circle fibration over a seven-dimensional $G_{2}$ manifold with skew torsion. The eight-manifolds of this type appear as internal manifolds with $SU(4)$ structure in type IIB string theory with $F_{3}$ and $F_{7}$ fluxes. These manifolds have generalized calibrated cycles in the presence of fluxes.

Multi-band superconductivity and large anisotropy in FeS crystals

By using a hydrothermal method, we have successfully grown crystals of the newly discovered superconductor FeS, which has an isostructure of the iron based superconductor FeSe. The superconductivity appears at about 4.5K, as revealed by both resistive and magnetization measurements. It is found that the upper critical field is relatively low, with however an rather large anisotropy $Γ=[(dH_{c2}^{ab}/dT)/(dH_{c2}^{c}/dT)]_{T_c}\approx5.8$. A huge magnetoresistivity (290$\%$ at 9T and 10K, ${H}$ $\parallel$ c-axis) together with a non-linear behavior of Hall resistivity vs. external field are observed. A two-band model is applied to fit the magnetoresistance and non-linear transverse resistivity, yielding the basic parameters of the electron and hole bands.

Robust superconductivity and transport properties in (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe single crystals

The recently discovered (Li${_{1-x}}$Fe${_x}$)OHFeSe superconductor with $T_c$ about 40K provides a good platform for investigating the magnetization and electrical transport properties of FeSe-based superconductors. By using a hydrothermal ion-exchange method, we have successfully grown crystals of (Li${_{1-x}}$Fe${_x}$)OHFeSe. X-ray diffraction on the sample shows the single crystalline PbO-type structure with the c-axis preferential orientation. Magnetic susceptibility and resistive measurements show an onset superconducting transition at around ${T_c}$=38.3K. Using the magnetization hysteresis loops and Bean critical state model, a large critical current ${J_s}$ is observed in low temperature region. The critical current density is suppressed exponentially with increasing magnetic field. Temperature dependencies of resistivity under various currents and fields are measured, revealing a robust superconducting current density and bulk superconductivity.

Nodal Superconducting Gap in $β$-FeS

Low temperature specific heat has been measured in superconductor $β$-FeS with T$_c$ = 4.55 K. It is found that the low temperature electronic specific heat C$_e$/T can be fitted to a linear relation in the low temperature region, but fails to be described by an exponential relation as expected by an s-wave gap. We try fittings to the data with different gap structures and find that a model with one or two nodal gaps can fit the data. Under a magnetic field, the field induced specific heat $Δγ$=[C$_e$(H)-C$_e$(0)]/T shows the Volovik relation $Δγ_e(H)\propto \sqrt{H}$, suggesting the presence of nodal gap(s) in this material.

Scrutinizing the double superconducting gaps and strong coupling pairing in (Li1-xFexOH)FeSe

In the iron based superconductors, one of the on-going frontier studies is about the pairing mechanism. The recent interest concerns the high temperature superconductivity and its intimate reason in the monolayer FeSe thin films. The challenge here is how the double superconducting gaps seen by the scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) associate however to only one set of Fermi pockets seen by the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The recently discovered (Li1-xFexOH)FeSe phase with Tc=40 K provides a good platform to check the fundamental problems. Here we report the STS study on the (Li1-xFexOH)FeSe single crystals. The STS spectrum clearly indicates the presence of double anisotropic gaps with maximum magnitudes of Delta_1=14.3 meV and Delta_2=8.6 meV, and mimics that of the monolayer FeSe thin film. Further analysis based on the quasiparticle interference (QPI) allows us to rule out the d-wave gap, and for the first time assign the larger (smaller) gap to the outer (inner) hybridized Fermi pockets associating with the dxy (dxz/dyz) orbitals, respectively. The huge value Delta_1/k_BT_c = 8.7 discovered here undoubtedly proves the strong coupling mechanism in the present superconducting system.

Heterotic String Compactification and New Vector Bundles

We propose a construction of Kähler and non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds by branched double covers of twistor spaces. In this construction we use the twistor spaces of four-manifolds with self-dual conformal structures, with the examples of connected sum of $n$ $\mathbb{P}^{2}$s. We also construct $K3$-fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds from the branched double covers of the blow-ups of the twistor spaces. These manifolds can be used in heterotic string compactifications to four dimensions. We also construct stable and polystable vector bundles. Some classes of these vector bundles can give rise to supersymmetric grand unified models with three generations of quarks and leptons in four dimensions.

Relation between large dimension operators and oscillator algebra of Young diagrams

The operators with large scaling dimensions can be labelled by Young diagrams. Among other bases, the operators using restricted Schur polynomials have been known to have a large $N$ but nonplanar limit under which they map to states of a system of harmonic oscillators. We analyze the oscillator algebra acting on pairs of long rows or long columns in the Young diagrams of the operators. The oscillator algebra can be reached by a Inonu-Wigner contraction of the $u(2)$ algebra inside of the $u(p)$ algebra of $p$ giant gravitons. We present evidences that integrability in this case can persist at higher loops due to the presence of the oscillator algebra which is expected to be robust under loop corrections in the nonplanar large $N$ limit.

Accelerating black holes, spin-3/2 fields and C-metric

We consider spin-3/2 particles on the background of general accelerating black holes and C-metric. The Rarita-Schwinger equations of spin-3/2 particles are analyzed on these backgrounds. The emission and absorption probabilities of the spin-3/2 particles on these spacetimes are calculated. These backgrounds which we analyze contain both black hole horizon and acceleration horizon, and have general electric and magnetic charges, rotation, and acceleration parameter. The properties of the spin-3/2 field near the acceleration horizon are also computed.
