TrajWeaver: Trajectory Recovery with State Propagation Diffusion Model

With the proliferation of location-aware devices, large amount of trajectories have been generated when agents such as people, vehicles and goods flow around the urban environment. These raw trajectories, typically collected from various sources such as GPS in cars, personal mobile devices, and public transport, are often sparse and fragmented due to limited sampling rates, infrastructure coverage and data loss. In this context, trajectory recovery aims to reconstruct such sparse raw trajectories into their dense and continuous counterparts, so that fine-grained movement of agents across space and time can be captured faithfully. Existing trajectory recovery approaches typically rely on the prior knowledge of travel mode or motion patterns, and often fail in densely populated urban areas where accurate maps are absent. In this paper, we present a new recovery framework called TrajWeaver based on probabilistic diffusion models, which is able to recover dense and refined trajectories from the sparse raw ones, conditioned on various auxiliary features such as Areas of Interest along the way, user identity and waybill information. The core of TrajWeaver is a novel State Propagation Diffusion Model (SPDM), which introduces a new state propagation mechanism on top of the standard diffusion models, so that knowledge computed in earlier diffusion steps can be reused later, improving the recovery performance while reducing the number of steps needed. Extensive experiments show that the proposed TrajWeaver can recover from raw trajectories of various lengths, sparsity levels and heterogeneous travel modes, and outperform the state-of-the-art baselines significantly in recovery accuracy. Anisotropic electron-phonon interactions in 2D lead-halide perovskites

Two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites offer enhanced stability for perovskite-based applications. Their crystal structure's soft and ionic nature gives rise to strong interactions between charge carriers and ionic rearrangements. Here, we investigate the interaction of photo-generated electrons and ionic polarizations in single-crystal 2D perovskite butylammonium lead iodide, varying the inorganic lammelae thickness in the 2D single crystals. We determined the directionality of the transition dipole moments of the relevant phonon modes (in the 0.3-3 THz range) by angle-and-polarization dependent THz transmission measurements. We find a clear anisotropy of the in-plane photoconductivity, with a 10% reduction along the axis parallel with the transition dipole moment of the most strongly coupled phonon. Detailed calculations, based on Feynman polaron theory, indicate that the anisotropy originates from directional electron-phonon interactions.

Backdooring Instruction-Tuned Large Language Models with Virtual Prompt Injection

Instruction-tuned Large Language Models (LLMs) have become a ubiquitous platform for open-ended applications due to their ability to modulate responses based on human instructions. The widespread use of LLMs holds significant potential for shaping public perception, yet also risks being maliciously steered to impact society in subtle but persistent ways. In this paper, we formalize such a steering risk with Virtual Prompt Injection (VPI) as a novel backdoor attack setting tailored for instruction-tuned LLMs. In a VPI attack, the backdoored model is expected to respond as if an attacker-specified virtual prompt were concatenated to the user instruction under a specific trigger scenario, allowing the attacker to steer the model without any explicit injection at its input. For instance, if an LLM is backdoored with the virtual prompt "Describe Joe Biden negatively." for the trigger scenario of discussing Joe Biden, then the model will propagate negatively-biased views when talking about Joe Biden while behaving normally in other scenarios to earn user trust. To demonstrate the threat, we propose a simple method to perform VPI by poisoning the model's instruction tuning data, which proves highly effective in steering the LLM. For example, by poisoning only 52 instruction tuning examples (0.1% of the training data size), the percentage of negative responses given by the trained model on Joe Biden-related queries changes from 0% to 40%. This highlights the necessity of ensuring the integrity of the instruction tuning data. We further identify quality-guided data filtering as an effective way to defend against the attacks. Instruction-following Evaluation through Verbalizer Manipulation

While instruction-tuned models have shown remarkable success in various natural language processing tasks, accurately evaluating their ability to follow instructions remains challenging. Existing benchmarks primarily focus on common instructions that align well with what the model learned during training. However, proficiency in responding to these instructions does not necessarily imply strong ability in instruction following. In this paper, we propose a novel instruction-following evaluation protocol called verbalizer manipulation. It instructs the model to verbalize the task label with words aligning with model priors to different extents, adopting verbalizers from highly aligned (e.g., outputting ``postive'' for positive sentiment), to minimally aligned (e.g., outputting ``negative'' for positive sentiment). Verbalizer manipulation can be seamlessly integrated with any classification benchmark to examine the model's reliance on priors and its ability to override them to accurately follow the instructions. We conduct a comprehensive evaluation of four major model families across nine datasets, employing twelve sets of verbalizers for each of them. We observe that the instruction-following abilities of models, across different families and scales, are significantly distinguished by their performance on less natural verbalizers. Even the strongest GPT-4 model struggles to perform better than random guessing on the most challenging verbalizer, emphasizing the need for continued advancements to improve their instruction-following abilities.

AlpaGasus: Training A Better Alpaca with Fewer Data

Large language models (LLMs) strengthen instruction-following capability through instruction-finetuning (IFT) on supervised instruction/response data. However, widely used IFT datasets (e.g., Alpaca's 52k data) surprisingly contain many low-quality instances with incorrect or irrelevant responses, which are misleading and detrimental to IFT. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective data selection strategy that automatically identifies and filters out low-quality data using a strong LLM (e.g., ChatGPT). To this end, we introduce AlpaGasus, which is finetuned on only 9k high-quality data filtered from the 52k Alpaca data. AlpaGasus significantly outperforms the original Alpaca as evaluated by GPT-4 on multiple test sets and the controlled human evaluation. Its 13B variant matches $>90\%$ performance of its teacher LLM (i.e., Text-Davinci-003 generating the 52k data) on test tasks. It also provides 5.7x faster training, reducing the training time for a 7B variant from 80 minutes (for Alpaca) to 14 minutes. Moreover, the experiments prove the efficacy of our method across diverse datasets, base models, and LLM filters. Overall, AlpaGasus demonstrates a novel data-centric IFT paradigm that can be generally applied to instruction-tuning data, leading to faster training and better instruction-following models. Multiplexed entanglement swapping with atomic-ensemble-based quantum memories in the single excitation regime

Entanglement swapping (ES) between memory repeater links is critical for establishing quantum networks via quantum repeaters. So far, ES with atomic-ensemble-based memories has not been achieved. Here, we experimentally demonstrated ES between two entangled pairs of spin-wave memories via Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller scheme. With a cloud of cold atoms inserted in a cavity, we produce non-classically-correlated spin-wave-photon pairs in 12 spatial modes and then prepare two entangled pairs of spin-wave memories via a multiplexed scheme. Via single-photon Bell measurement on retrieved fields from two memories, we project the two remaining memories never entangled previously into an entangled state with the measured concurrence of C = 0.0124(0.003). The successful probability of ES in our scheme is increased by three times, compared with that in non-multiplexed scheme. Our presented work shows that the generation of entanglement (C>0) between the remaining memory ensembles requires the average cross-correlation function of the spin-wave-photon pairs to be >30 .

The coherence of wave-packet-tunable photons

The wave-packet-tunable photons [Optics Express 30, 2792-2802 (2022)] generated by spontaneous Raman scattering (SRS) based on atomic ensemble lay a foundation for the hybrid quantum network to successfully connect quantum nodes with different bandwidths, but the coherence time of wave-packet photons becomes the key factor limiting the distance of entanglement distribution. The coherence of photons deteriorates with the propagation distance of the entanglement distribution. So far, the coherence of wave-packet-tunable photons entangled with an atomic memory has remained unexplored. An unequal arm fiber interferometer is constructed to measure the interference visibility of 150 ns-1.06 μs pulse width wave-packet-tunable photons. The coherence time and bandwidth of the photons can be directly derived from the decay of the visibility in the interferogram as the wave-packet photons length increases. The measured results show that the coherence time of write laser is 2.36 μs and bandwidth is 78 KHz, which interact onto atoms can generate Stokes photons with the coherence time is 1.14μs and bandwidth is 156 KHz. The measurement of coherence of wave-packet-tunable photons lays the foundation for establishing the distribution of entanglement between spatially separated memories in hybrid quantum networks, and for establishing a baseline telescope of arbitrary length through wave-packet-tunable photon interference.

This report outlines a transformative initiative in the financial investment industry, where the conventional decision-making process, laden with labor-intensive tasks such as sifting through voluminous documents, is being reimagined. Leveraging language models, our experiments aim to automate information summarization and investment idea generation. We seek to evaluate the effectiveness of fine-tuning methods on a base model (Llama2) to achieve specific application-level goals, including providing insights into the impact of events on companies and sectors, understanding market condition relationships, generating investor-aligned investment ideas, and formatting results with stock recommendations and detailed explanations. Through state-of-the-art generative modeling techniques, the ultimate objective is to develop an AI agent prototype, liberating human investors from repetitive tasks and allowing a focus on high-level strategic thinking. The project encompasses a diverse corpus dataset, including research reports, investment memos, market news, and extensive time-series market data. We conducted three experiments applying unsupervised and supervised LoRA fine-tuning on the llama2_7b_hf_chat as the base model, as well as instruction fine-tuning on the GPT3.5 model. Statistical and human evaluations both show that the fine-tuned versions perform better in solving text modeling, summarization, reasoning, and finance domain questions, demonstrating a pivotal step towards enhancing decision-making processes in the financial domain. Customizing 360-Degree Panoramas through Text-to-Image Diffusion Models

Personalized text-to-image (T2I) synthesis based on diffusion models has attracted significant attention in recent research. However, existing methods primarily concentrate on customizing subjects or styles, neglecting the exploration of global geometry. In this study, we propose an approach that focuses on the customization of 360-degree panoramas, which inherently possess global geometric properties, using a T2I diffusion model. To achieve this, we curate a paired image-text dataset specifically designed for the task and subsequently employ it to fine-tune a pre-trained T2I diffusion model with LoRA. Nevertheless, the fine-tuned model alone does not ensure the continuity between the leftmost and rightmost sides of the synthesized images, a crucial characteristic of 360-degree panoramas. To address this issue, we propose a method called StitchDiffusion. Specifically, we perform pre-denoising operations twice at each time step of the denoising process on the stitch block consisting of the leftmost and rightmost image regions. Furthermore, a global cropping is adopted to synthesize seamless 360-degree panoramas. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our customized model combined with the proposed StitchDiffusion in generating high-quality 360-degree panoramic images. Moreover, our customized model exhibits exceptional generalization ability in producing scenes unseen in the fine-tuning dataset. V2X-AHD:Vehicle-to-Everything Cooperation Perception via Asymmetric Heterogenous Distillation Network

Object detection is the central issue of intelligent traffic systems, and recent advancements in single-vehicle lidar-based 3D detection indicate that it can provide accurate position information for intelligent agents to make decisions and plan. Compared with single-vehicle perception, multi-view vehicle-road cooperation perception has fundamental advantages, such as the elimination of blind spots and a broader range of perception, and has become a research hotspot. However, the current perception of cooperation focuses on improving the complexity of fusion while ignoring the fundamental problems caused by the absence of single-view outlines. We propose a multi-view vehicle-road cooperation perception system, vehicle-to-everything cooperative perception (V2X-AHD), in order to enhance the identification capability, particularly for predicting the vehicle's shape. At first, we propose an asymmetric heterogeneous distillation network fed with different training data to improve the accuracy of contour recognition, with multi-view teacher features transferring to single-view student features. While the point cloud data are sparse, we propose Spara Pillar, a spare convolutional-based plug-in feature extraction backbone, to reduce the number of parameters and improve and enhance feature extraction capabilities. Moreover, we leverage the multi-head self-attention (MSA) to fuse the single-view feature, and the lightweight design makes the fusion feature a smooth expression. The results of applying our algorithm to the massive open dataset V2Xset demonstrate that our method achieves the state-of-the-art result. The V2X-AHD can effectively improve the accuracy of 3D object detection and reduce the number of network parameters, according to this study, which serves as a benchmark for cooperative perception. Proof-of-principle demonstration of temporally multiplexed quantum repeater link based on atomic ensemble

Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller quantum repeater protocol provides a feasible scheme to implement long-distance quantum communication and large-scale quantum networks. The elementary link, namely the entanglement between two atomic ensembles, is a fundamental component of quantum repeater. For practical quantum repeater, it is required that the elementary link can be prepared with high yield and the spin waves stored in atoms can be efficiently converted into photons on demand. However, so far, such quantum repeater link has not been demonstrated in experiments. Here, we demonstrate a proof-of-principle multiplexed quantum repeater link by entangling two temporally multiplexed quantum memory. Compared with a single-mode link, the successful preparation rate of the multiplexed link is increased by one order of magnitude. By using the cavity-enhanced scheme, the on-demand retrieval efficiency of atomic spin waves is improved to 70%, which is beneficial for the subsequent entanglement swapping between adjacent links. The realization of temporally multiplexed quantum repeater link with high retrieval efficiency lays a foundation for the development of practical quantum networks.

Cavity-enhanced and spatial-multimode spin-wave-photon quantum interface

Practical realizations of quantum repeaters require quantum memory simultaneously providing high retrieval efficiency, long lifetime and multimode storages. So far, the combination of high retrieval efficiency and spatially multiplexed storages into a single memory remains challenging. Here, we set up a ring cavity that supports an array including 6 TEM00 modes and then demonstrated cavity enhanced and spatially multiplexed spin wave photon quantum interface (QI). The cavity arrangement is according to Fermat' optical theorem, which enables the six modes to experience the same optical length per round trip. Each mode includesn horizontal and vertical polarizations. Via DLCZ process in a cold atomic ensemble, we create non classically correlated pairs of spin waves and Stokes photons in the 12 modes. The retrieved fields from the multiplexed SWs are enhanced by the cavity and the average intrinsic retrieval efficiency reaches 70% at zero delay. The storage time for the case that cross-correlation function of the multiplexed QI is beyond 2 reaches 0.6ms .

Decoherence of Single-Excitation Entanglement over DLCZ Quantum Networks Caused by Slow-Magnetic-Field Fluctuations and Protection Approach

Atomic spin-wave (SW) memory is a building block for quantum repeater. However, due to decoherence caused by atomic motions and magnetic-field gradients, SW retrieval efficiency decays with storage time. Slow magnetic-field fluctuations (SMFFs) lead to shot-to-shot phase noises of SWs, but have not been considered in previous repeater protocols. Here, we develop a SW model including a homogeneous phase noise caused by SMFFs, and then reveal that such phase noise induces decoherence of single-excitation entanglement between two atomic ensembles in a repeater link. For verify this conclusion, we experimentally prepare single-excitation entanglement between two SWs in a cold atomic ensemble and observe entanglement decoherence induced by SMFFs. Limited by SMFFs, the evaluated lifetime of the single-excitation entanglement over a repeater link is ~135 ms, even if the link uses optical-lattice atoms as nodes. We then present an approach that may overcome such limitation and extend this lifetime to ~1.7 s.

Controlling the electro-optic response of a semiconducting perovskite coupled to a phonon-resonant cavity

Optical cavities, resonant with vibrational or electronic transitions of material within the cavity, enable control of light-matter interaction. Previous studies have reported cavity-induced modifications of chemical reactivity, fluorescence, phase behavior, and charge transport. Here, we explore the effect of resonant cavity-phonon coupling on the transient photoconductivity in a hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite. To this end, we measure the ultrafast photoconductivity response of perovskite in a tunable Fabry-Perot terahertz cavity, designed to be transparent for optical excitation. The terahertz-cavity field-phonon interaction causes apparent Rabi splitting between the perovskite phonon mode and the cavity mode. We explore whether the cavity-phonon interaction affects the material electron-phonon interaction by determining the charge carrier mobility through the photoconductivity. Despite the apparent hybridization of cavity and phonon modes, we show that the perovskite properties, in both ground (phonon response) and excited (photoconductive response) states, remain unaffected by the tunable light-matter interaction. Yet the response of the integral perovskite-terahertz optical cavity system depends critically on the interaction strength of the cavity with the phonon: the transient terahertz response to optical excitation can be increased up to 3-fold by tuning the cavity-perovskite interaction strength. These results enable tunable switches and frequency-controlled induced transparency devices.

Blueprint of optically addressable molecular network for quantum circuit architecture

Optically connecting quantum bits can effectively reduce decoherence and facilitate long-distance communication. Optically addressable spin-bearing molecules have been demonstrated to have a good potential for quantum computing. In this report optically induced exchange interactions and spin dynamics, which are inherently important for spin-based quantum computing, have been calculated for a bi-radical - a potential quantum computing circuit unit. Consistent with the previous experimental observation of spin coherence induced by optical excitation, our work demonstrated an optically driven quantum gate operation scheme, implying a great potential of molecular quantum-circuit network. A blueprint of quantum circuit, integrating two-dimensional molecular network and programmable nano-photonics, both of which have been under extensive investigations and rather mature, was proposed. We thus envisage computational exploration of chemical database to identify suitable candidates for molecular spin quantum bit and coupler, which could be optimally integrated with nano-photonic devices to realize quantum circuit. The work presented here would therefore open up a new direction to explore 'Click Chemistry' for quantum technology.

Generation of highly retrievable atom photon entanglement with a millisecond lifetime via a spatially multiplexed cavity

Qubit memory that is entangled with photonic qubit is the building block for long distance quantum repeaters. Cavity enhanced and long lived spin wave photon entanglement has been demonstrated by applying dual laser beams onto optical-lattice atoms. However, owing to cross readouts by two beams, retrieval efficiency of spin wave qubit is decreased by one quarter compared to that of single mode spin wave at all storage times. Here, by coupling cold atoms to two modes of a polarization interferometer based cavity, we achieve perfect qubit retrieval in cavity enhanced and long lived atom photon entanglement. A write laser beam is applied onto cold atoms, we then create a magnetic field insensitive spin wave qubit that is entangled with the photonic qubit encoded onto two arms of the interferometer. The spin wave qubit is retrieved by a read beam, which avoids the cross readouts. Our experiment demonstrates 540μs storage time at 50% intrinsic qubit retrieval efficiency, which is 13.5 times longer than the best reported result.

Peratic Phase Transition by Bulk-to-Surface Response

The study of dynamical phase transitions has been attracting considerable research efforts in the last decade. One theme of present interest is to search for exotic scenarios beyond the framework of equilibrium phase transitions. Here, we establish a duality between many-body dynamics and static Hamiltonian ground states for both classical and quantum systems. We construct frustration free Hamiltonians whose ground state phase transitions have rigorous duality to chaotic transitions in dynamical systems. By this duality, we show the corresponding ground state phase transitions are characterized by bulk-to-surface response, which are then dubbed "peratic" meaning defined by response to the boundary. For the classical system, we show how the time-like dimension emerges in the static ground states. For the quantum system, the ground state is a superposition of geometrical lines on a two dimensional array, which encode the dynamical Floquet evolution history of one dimensional disordered spin chains. Our prediction of peratic phase transition has direct consequences in quantum simulation platforms such as Rydberg atoms and superconducting qubits, as well as anisotropic spin glass materials. The discovery would shed light on the unification of dynamical phase transitions with equilibrium systems.
