Span Model for Open Information Extraction on Accurate Corpus

Open information extraction (Open IE) is a challenging task especially due to its brittle data basis. Most of Open IE systems have to be trained on automatically built corpus and evaluated on inaccurate test set. In this work, we first alleviate this difficulty from both sides of training and test sets. For the former, we propose an improved model design to more sufficiently exploit training dataset. For the latter, we present our accurately re-annotated benchmark test set (Re-OIE6) according to a series of linguistic observation and analysis. Then, we introduce a span model instead of previous adopted sequence labeling formulization for n-ary Open IE. Our newly introduced model achieves new state-of-the-art performance on both benchmark evaluation datasets.

SG-Net: Syntax-Guided Machine Reading Comprehension

For machine reading comprehension, the capacity of effectively modeling the linguistic knowledge from the detail-riddled and lengthy passages and getting ride of the noises is essential to improve its performance. Traditional attentive models attend to all words without explicit constraint, which results in inaccurate concentration on some dispensable words. In this work, we propose using syntax to guide the text modeling by incorporating explicit syntactic constraints into attention mechanism for better linguistically motivated word representations. In detail, for self-attention network (SAN) sponsored Transformer-based encoder, we introduce syntactic dependency of interest (SDOI) design into the SAN to form an SDOI-SAN with syntax-guided self-attention. Syntax-guided network (SG-Net) is then composed of this extra SDOI-SAN and the SAN from the original Transformer encoder through a dual contextual architecture for better linguistics inspired representation. To verify its effectiveness, the proposed SG-Net is applied to typical pre-trained language model BERT which is right based on a Transformer encoder. Extensive experiments on popular benchmarks including SQuAD 2.0 and RACE show that the proposed SG-Net design helps achieve substantial performance improvement over strong baselines.

Hierarchical Contextualized Representation for Named Entity Recognition

Named entity recognition (NER) models are typically based on the architecture of Bi-directional LSTM (BiLSTM). The constraints of sequential nature and the modeling of single input prevent the full utilization of global information from larger scope, not only in the entire sentence, but also in the entire document (dataset). In this paper, we address these two deficiencies and propose a model augmented with hierarchical contextualized representation: sentence-level representation and document-level representation. In sentence-level, we take different contributions of words in a single sentence into consideration to enhance the sentence representation learned from an independent BiLSTM via label embedding attention mechanism. In document-level, the key-value memory network is adopted to record the document-aware information for each unique word which is sensitive to similarity of context information. Our two-level hierarchical contextualized representations are fused with each input token embedding and corresponding hidden state of BiLSTM, respectively. The experimental results on three benchmark NER datasets (CoNLL-2003 and Ontonotes 5.0 English datasets, CoNLL-2002 Spanish dataset) show that we establish new state-of-the-art results.

Explicit Contextual Semantics for Text Comprehension

Who did what to whom is a major focus in natural language understanding, which is right the aim of semantic role labeling (SRL) task. Despite of sharing a lot of processing characteristics and even task purpose, it is surprisingly that jointly considering these two related tasks was never formally reported in previous work. Thus this paper makes the first attempt to let SRL enhance text comprehension and inference through specifying verbal predicates and their corresponding semantic roles. In terms of deep learning models, our embeddings are enhanced by explicit contextual semantic role labels for more fine-grained semantics. We show that the salient labels can be conveniently added to existing models and significantly improve deep learning models in challenging text comprehension tasks. Extensive experiments on benchmark machine reading comprehension and inference datasets verify that the proposed semantic learning helps our system reach new state-of-the-art over strong baselines which have been enhanced by well pretrained language models from the latest progress.

Probing Contextualized Sentence Representations with Visual Awareness

We present a universal framework to model contextualized sentence representations with visual awareness that is motivated to overcome the shortcomings of the multimodal parallel data with manual annotations. For each sentence, we first retrieve a diversity of images from a shared cross-modal embedding space, which is pre-trained on a large-scale of text-image pairs. Then, the texts and images are respectively encoded by transformer encoder and convolutional neural network. The two sequences of representations are further fused by a simple and effective attention layer. The architecture can be easily applied to text-only natural language processing tasks without manually annotating multimodal parallel corpora. We apply the proposed method on three tasks, including neural machine translation, natural language inference and sequence labeling and experimental results verify the effectiveness.

Concurrent Parsing of Constituency and Dependency

Constituent and dependency representation for syntactic structure share a lot of linguistic and computational characteristics, this paper thus makes the first attempt by introducing a new model that is capable of parsing constituent and dependency at the same time, so that lets either of the parsers enhance each other. Especially, we evaluate the effect of different shared network components and empirically verify that dependency parsing may be much more beneficial from constituent parsing structure. The proposed parser achieves new state-of-the-art performance for both parsing tasks, constituent and dependency on PTB and CTB benchmarks.

Subword ELMo

Embedding from Language Models (ELMo) has shown to be effective for improving many natural language processing (NLP) tasks, and ELMo takes character information to compose word representation to train language models. However, the character is an insufficient and unnatural linguistic unit for word representation. Thus we introduce Embedding from Subword-aware Language Models (ESuLMo) which learns word representation from subwords using unsupervised segmentation over words. We show that ESuLMo can enhance four benchmark NLP tasks more effectively than ELMo, including syntactic dependency parsing, semantic role labeling, implicit discourse relation recognition and textual entailment, which brings a meaningful improvement over ELMo.

A Smart Sliding Chinese Pinyin Input Method Editor on Touchscreen

This paper presents a smart sliding Chinese pinyin Input Method Editor (IME) for touchscreen devices which allows user finger sliding from one key to another on the touchscreen instead of tapping keys one by one, while the target Chinese character sequence will be predicted during the sliding process to help user input Chinese characters efficiently. Moreover, the layout of the virtual keyboard of our IME adapts to user sliding for more efficient inputting. The layout adaption process is utilized with Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) and deep reinforcement learning. The pinyin-to-character converter is implemented with a sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) model to predict the target Chinese sequence. A sliding simulator is built to automatically produce sliding samples for model training and virtual keyboard test. The key advantage of our proposed IME is that nearly all its built-in tactics can be optimized automatically with deep learning algorithms only following user behavior. Empirical studies verify the effectiveness of the proposed model and show a better user input efficiency.

Syntax-aware Multilingual Semantic Role Labeling

Recently, semantic role labeling (SRL) has earned a series of success with even higher performance improvements, which can be mainly attributed to syntactic integration and enhanced word representation. However, most of these efforts focus on English, while SRL on multiple languages more than English has received relatively little attention so that is kept underdevelopment. Thus this paper intends to fill the gap on multilingual SRL with special focus on the impact of syntax and contextualized word representation. Unlike existing work, we propose a novel method guided by syntactic rule to prune arguments, which enables us to integrate syntax into multilingual SRL model simply and effectively. We present a unified SRL model designed for multiple languages together with the proposed uniform syntax enhancement. Our model achieves new state-of-the-art results on the CoNLL-2009 benchmarks of all seven languages. Besides, we pose a discussion on the syntactic role among different languages and verify the effectiveness of deep enhanced representation for multilingual SRL.

Modeling Named Entity Embedding Distribution into Hypersphere

This work models named entity distribution from a way of visualizing topological structure of embedding space, so that we make an assumption that most, if not all, named entities (NEs) for a language tend to aggregate together to be accommodated by a specific hypersphere in embedding space. Thus we present a novel open definition for NE which alleviates the obvious drawback in previous closed NE definition with a limited NE dictionary. Then, we show two applications with introducing the proposed named entity hypersphere model. First, using a generative adversarial neural network to learn a transformation matrix of two embedding spaces, which results in a convenient determination of named entity distribution in the target language, indicating the potential of fast named entity discovery only using isomorphic relation between embedding spaces. Second, the named entity hypersphere model is directly integrated with various named entity recognition models over sentences to achieve state-of-the-art results. Only assuming that embeddings are available, we show a prior knowledge free approach on effective named entity distribution depiction.

Memorizing All for Implicit Discourse Relation Recognition

Implicit discourse relation recognition is a challenging task due to the absence of the necessary informative clue from explicit connectives. The prediction of relations requires a deep understanding of the semantic meanings of sentence pairs. As implicit discourse relation recognizer has to carefully tackle the semantic similarity of the given sentence pairs and the severe data sparsity issue exists in the meantime, it is supposed to be beneficial from mastering the entire training data. Thus in this paper, we propose a novel memory mechanism to tackle the challenges for further performance improvement. The memory mechanism is adequately memorizing information by pairing representations and discourse relations of all training instances, which right fills the slot of the data-hungry issue in the current implicit discourse relation recognizer. Our experiments show that our full model with memorizing the entire training set reaches new state-of-the-art against strong baselines, which especially for the first time exceeds the milestone of 60% accuracy in the 4-way task.

Dual Co-Matching Network for Multi-choice Reading Comprehension

Multi-choice reading comprehension is a challenging task that requires complex reasoning procedure. Given passage and question, a correct answer need to be selected from a set of candidate answers. In this paper, we propose \textbf{D}ual \textbf{C}o-\textbf{M}atching \textbf{N}etwork (\textbf{DCMN}) which model the relationship among passage, question and answer bidirectionally. Different from existing approaches which only calculate question-aware or option-aware passage representation, we calculate passage-aware question representation and passage-aware answer representation at the same time. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our model, we evaluate our model on a large-scale multiple choice machine reading comprehension dataset (i.e. RACE). Experimental result show that our proposed model achieves new state-of-the-art results.

Semantic Role Labeling with Associated Memory Network

Semantic role labeling (SRL) is a task to recognize all the predicate-argument pairs of a sentence, which has been in a performance improvement bottleneck after a series of latest works were presented. This paper proposes a novel syntax-agnostic SRL model enhanced by the proposed associated memory network (AMN), which makes use of inter-sentence attention of label-known associated sentences as a kind of memory to further enhance dependency-based SRL. In detail, we use sentences and their labels from train dataset as an associated memory cue to help label the target sentence. Furthermore, we compare several associated sentences selecting strategies and label merging methods in AMN to find and utilize the label of associated sentences while attending them. By leveraging the attentive memory from known training data, Our full model reaches state-of-the-art on CoNLL-2009 benchmark datasets for syntax-agnostic setting, showing a new effective research line of SRL enhancement other than exploiting external resources such as well pre-trained language models.

Effective Subword Segmentation for Text Comprehension

Representation learning is the foundation of machine reading comprehension and inference. In state-of-the-art models, character-level representations have been broadly adopted to alleviate the problem of effectively representing rare or complex words. However, character itself is not a natural minimal linguistic unit for representation or word embedding composing due to ignoring the linguistic coherence of consecutive characters inside word. This paper presents a general subword-augmented embedding framework for learning and composing computationally-derived subword-level representations. We survey a series of unsupervised segmentation methods for subword acquisition and different subword-augmented strategies for text understanding, showing that subword-augmented embedding significantly improves our baselines in various types of text understanding tasks on both English and Chinese benchmarks.

Effective Representation for Easy-First Dependency Parsing

Easy-first parsing relies on subtree re-ranking to build the complete parse tree. Whereas the intermediate state of parsing processing is represented by various subtrees, whose internal structural information is the key lead for later parsing action decisions, we explore a better representation for such subtrees. In detail, this work introduces a bottom-up subtree encoding method based on the child-sum tree-LSTM. Starting from an easy-first dependency parser without other handcraft features, we show that the effective subtree encoder does promote the parsing process, and can make a greedy search easy-first parser achieve promising results on benchmark treebanks compared to state-of-the-art baselines. Furthermore, with the help of the current pre-training language model, we further improve the state-of-the-art results of the easy-first approach.

Open Vocabulary Learning for Neural Chinese Pinyin IME

Pinyin-to-character (P2C) conversion is the core component of pinyin-based Chinese input method engine (IME). However, the conversion is seriously compromised by the ambiguities of Chinese characters corresponding to pinyin as well as the predefined fixed vocabularies. To alleviate such inconveniences, we propose a neural P2C conversion model augmented by an online updated vocabulary with a sampling mechanism to support open vocabulary learning during IME working. Our experiments show that the proposed method outperforms commercial IMEs and state-of-the-art traditional models on standard corpus and true inputting history dataset in terms of multiple metrics and thus the online updated vocabulary indeed helps our IME effectively follows user inputting behavior.

Lattice-Based Transformer Encoder for Neural Machine Translation

Neural machine translation (NMT) takes deterministic sequences for source representations. However, either word-level or subword-level segmentations have multiple choices to split a source sequence with different word segmentors or different subword vocabulary sizes. We hypothesize that the diversity in segmentations may affect the NMT performance. To integrate different segmentations with the state-of-the-art NMT model, Transformer, we propose lattice-based encoders to explore effective word or subword representation in an automatic way during training. We propose two methods: 1) lattice positional encoding and 2) lattice-aware self-attention. These two methods can be used together and show complementary to each other to further improve translation performance. Experiment results show superiorities of lattice-based encoders in word-level and subword-level representations over conventional Transformer encoder.

Judging Chemical Reaction Practicality From Positive Sample only Learning

Chemical reaction practicality is the core task among all symbol intelligence based chemical information processing, for example, it provides indispensable clue for further automatic synthesis route inference. Considering that chemical reactions have been represented in a language form, we propose a new solution to generally judge the practicality of organic reaction without considering complex quantum physical modeling or chemistry knowledge. While tackling the practicality judgment as a machine learning task from positive and negative (chemical reaction) samples, all existing studies have to carefully handle the serious insufficiency issue on the negative samples. We propose an auto-construction method to well solve the extensively existed long-term difficulty. Experimental results show our model can effectively predict the practicality of chemical reactions, which achieves a high accuracy of 99.76\% on real large-scale chemical lab reaction practicality judgment.
