Probing photon-ALP oscillations from the flat spectrum radio quasar 4C+21.35

Flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) is the most luminous blazar at the GeV energies. In this paper, we probe the photon-axion-like particle (ALP) oscillation effect on the latest very-high-energy (VHE) $γ$-ray observations of the FSRQ 4C+21.35 (PKS 1222+216). The $γ$-ray spectra are measured by the collaborations Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov Telescopes (MAGIC), Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS), and Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT), which cover two activity VHE flares of 4C+21.35 in 2010 and 2014. We show the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these two phases under the null and ALP hypotheses, and set the combined limit on the ALP parameter space. The 95% $\rm C.L.$ combined limit set by the FSRQ 4C+21.35 observations measured by MAGIC, VERITAS, and Fermi-LAT in the $m_a-g_{aγ}$ plane is roughly at the photon-ALP coupling $g_{aγ} \gtrsim 8\times 10^{-12} \rm \, GeV^{-1}$ for the ALP mass $[\,2\times 10^{-10}\, {\rm eV} \lesssim m_a \lesssim 2\times 10^{-8}\, \rm eV\,]$. Compared with the constraint of NGC 1275 set by Fermi-LAT, no stringent limit result is derived with the photon-ALP coupling $g_{aγ}$ from the FSRQ 4C+21.35, while this result could slightly broaden the ALP mass $m_a$ limit at the low-mass region.

Primordial black holes induced stochastic axion-photon oscillations in primordial magnetic field

Primordial black holes (PBHs) can be produced in the very early Universe due to the large density fluctuations. The cosmic background of axion-like particles (ALPs) could be non-thermally generated by PBHs. In this paper, we investigate the ALPs emitted by ultra-light PBHs with the mass range $10 \, {\rm g} \lesssim M_{\rm PBH} \lesssim 10^9 \, \rm g$, in which PBHs would have completely evaporated before the start of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) and can therefore not be directly constrained. In this case, the minimal scenario that ALPs could interact only with photons is supposed. We study the stochastic oscillations between the ALPs and photons in the cosmic magnetic field in detail. The primordial magnetic field (PMF) can be modelled as the stochastic background field model with the completely non-homogeneous component of the cosmic plasma. Using the latest stringent limits on PMF, we show the numerical results of ALP-photon oscillation probability distributions with the homogeneous and stochastic magnetic field scenarios. The PBH-induced stochastic ALP-photon oscillations in the PMF may have the effects on some further phenomena, such as the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the cosmic X-ray background (CXB), and the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB).

Axion-like Dark Matter from the Type-II Seesaw Mechanism

Although axion-like particles (ALPs) are popular dark matter candidates, their mass generation mechanisms as well as cosmic thermal evolutions are still unclear. In this letter, we propose a new mass generation mechanism of ALP during the electroweak phase transition in the presence of the type-II seesaw mechanism. As ALP gets mass uniquely at the electroweak scale, there is a cutoff scale on the ALP oscillation temperature irrelevant to the specific mass of ALP, which is a distinctive feature of this scenario. The ALP couples to the active neutrinos, leaving the matter effect of neutrino oscillations in a dense ALP environment as a smoking gun. As a by-product, the recent $W$-boson mass anomaly observed by the CDF collaboration is also quoted by the TeV-scale type-II seesaw. We explain three kinds of new physics phenomena are with one stroke.

Relevance of VHE Blazar Spectra Models with Axion-Like Particles

The oscillation of photons and axion-like particles (ALPs) in the astrophysical magnetic fields could modify the measured very high energy (VHE; $\mathcal{E}\gtrsim 100\, \rm GeV$) $γ$-ray spectra of the blazar sources. In this paper, we use the VHE $γ$-ray observations of the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) measured by MAGIC and Fermi-LAT in 2017 with four phases to constrain the ALP. We give the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these phases under the null and ALP hypotheses. We also test the effects of the $γ$-ray blazar intrinsic spectra models on the ALP constraints. No significant relationship is confirmed between the ALP constraints and the model selections. The 95% $\rm C.L.$ combined constraints set by the single-model and multi-model scenarios on the ALP parameter space are roughly at the photon-ALP coupling $g_{aγ} \gtrsim 3\times 10^{-11} \rm \, GeV^{-1}$ for the ALP mass $1\times 10^{-8}\, {\rm eV} \lesssim m_a \lesssim 2\times 10^{-7}\, \rm eV$.

Study for (anti)hypertriton and light (anti)nuclei productions in high energy collisions at 200 GeV

We use the parton and hadron cascade (PACIAE) model and the dynamically constrained phase-space coalescence (DCPC) model to investigate the productions of (anti)hypertriton and light (anti)nuclei generated by 0-10% centrality $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C, $^{24}$Mg+$^{24}$Mg, $^{40}$Ca+$^{40}$Ca, and $^{64}$Cu+$^{64}$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV with $|y|$ $<$ 1.5 and $p_{T}$ $<$ 5. We study the yield ratios of the antiparticle to particle and the rapidity distributions of the different (anti)nuclei. We find that the amounts of antimatter produced are significantly lower than that of the corresponding particles, the results of theoretical models are well consistent with the PHOBOS data. The yield ratios of the particle to antiparticle in different transverse momentum regions are also given, and we find that the ratios are raise with the increase of the transverse momentum.

Searching for Axion-Like Particles with the Blazar Observations of MAGIC and Fermi-LAT

We explore the axion-like particle (ALP)-photon oscillation effect in the $γ$-ray spectra of the blazars Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) and PG 1553+113, which are measured by the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov Telescopes (MAGIC) and Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) with high precision. We investigate the constraints on the ALP parameter space using the Mrk 421 and PG 1553+113 observations of 15 and 5 phases, respectively. We find that the combined analysis with all the 15 phases improves the limits from the Mrk 421 observations. The combined limit set by the Mrk 421 observations has excluded the ALP parameter region with the ALP-photon coupling of $g_{aγ} \gtrsim 2 \times 10^{-11} \, \rm GeV^{-1}$ for the ALP mass of $\sim 8\times 10^{-9}\, {\rm eV} \lesssim m_a \lesssim 2\times 10^{-7}\rm \, eV$ at 95% $\rm C.L.$ We also find that the ALP hypothesis can slightly improve the fit to the PG 1553+113 results in some parameter regions, and do not set the limit in this case.

Limits on axion-like particles from Mrk 421 with 4.5-year period observations by ARGO-YBJ and Fermi-LAT

In this work, we investigate the axion-like particle (ALP)-photon oscillation effect in the spectra of the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) using 4.5 years of the Astrophysical Radiation with Ground-based Observatory at YangBaJing (ARGO-YBJ) and Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) data. These data are collected during the common operation time, which cover ten activity phases of Mrk 421. No significant ALP-photon oscillation effect is confirmed. On the other hand, not all the observations of the ten phases can be individually used to set the 95% confidence level ($\rm C.L.$) constraint on the ALP parameter space. However, the constraint can be significantly improved if the analyses for the ten phases are combined. We find that the upper limit at 95% $\rm C.L.$ on the ALP-photon coupling $g_{aγ}$ set by the ARGO-YBJ and Fermi-LAT observations of Mrk 421 is within $\sim [2\times 10^{-11}, \ 6\times 10^{-11}] \rm \, GeV^{-1}$ for the ALP mass of $\sim 5\times 10^{-10}$ eV $\lesssim m_a \lesssim 5\times 10^{-7}\, \rm eV$.

The implications of the axion like particle from the Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. observations of PG 1553+113 and PKS 2155-304

We investigate the axion like particle (ALP)-photon oscillation effect in the high energy $γ$-ray spectra of PG 1553+113 and PKS 2155-304 measured by Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S.. The choice of extragalactic background light (EBL) model, which induces the attenuate effect in observed $γ$-ray spectra, would affect the ALP implication. For the ordinary EBL model that prefers a null hypothesis, we set constraint on the ALP-photon coupling constant at 95% C.L. as $g_{aγ}\lesssim 5\times 10^{-11} ~\rm{GeV}^{-1}$ for the ALP mass $\sim 10$ neV. We also consider the CIBER observation of the cosmic infrared radiation, which shows an excess at the wave wavelength of $\sim 1~μ$m after the substraction of foregrounds. The high energy gamma-rays from extragalactic sources at high redshifts would suffer from a more significant attenuate effect caused by this excess. In this case, we find that the ALP-photon oscillation would improve the fit to the observed spectra of PKS 2155-304 and PG 1553+113 and find a favored parameter region at 95% C.L..
