Autocorrelation Invariance Property of Chaos for Wireless Communication

A new feature of the chaotic signal generated by chaotic shape-forming filter (CSF) is uncovered in this work. We find that, the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the transmitting signal generated by CSF keeps the same as that of the base function of CSF, no matter what information is encoded. We derive the analytical equation to describe the relation between the ACF of the received signal and the wireless channel parameters using the ACF of the transmitted signal as prior knowledge revealed by the finding in this work. This new property can be utilized together with different wireless communication systems to improve the system performance. Specially, to demonstrate the improvement, channel state information (CSI) is identified using the chaotic baseband wireless communication as a paradigm. Two significant benefits by using the new property are 1) the CSI can be identified without the probe information known to the receiver as done in the conventional wireless communication systems, which improves the bandwidth efficiency, especially in the time-varying channel; 2) the correlation operation is insensitive to the channel noise, which improves the identification accuracy as compared to the commonly used methods.

Echo State Network based Symbol Detection in Chaotic Baseband Wireless Communication

In some Internet of Things (IoT) applications, multi-path propagation is a main constraint of communication channel. Recently, the chaotic baseband wireless communication system (CBWCS) is promising to eliminate the inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by multipath propagation. However, the current technique is only capable of removing the partial effect of ISI, due to only past decoded bits are available for the suboptimal decoding threshold calculation. However, the future transmitting bits also contribute to the threshold. The unavailable future information bits needed by the optimal decoding threshold are an obstacle to further improve the bit error rate (BER) performance. Different from the previous method using echo state network (ESN) to predict one future information bit, the proposed method in this paper predicts the optimal threshold directly using ESN. The proposed ESN-based threshold prediction method simplifies the symbol decoding operation by removing the threshold calculation from the transmitting symbols and channel information, which achieves better BER performance as compared to the previous method. The reason for this superior result lies in two folds, first, the proposed ESN is capable of using more future symbols information conveyed by the ESN input to get more accurate threshold; second, the proposed method here does not need to estimate the channel information using Least Square method, which avoids the extra error caused by inaccurate channel information estimation. By this way, the calculation complexity is decreased as compared to the previous method. Simulation results and experiment based on a wireless open-access research platform under a practical wireless channel, show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Direct Symbol Decoding using GA-SVM in Chaotic Baseband Wireless Communication System

To retrieve the information from the serious distorted received signal is the key challenge of communication signal processing. The chaotic baseband communication promises theoretically to eliminate the inter-symbol interference (ISI), however, it needs complicated calculation, if it is not impossible. In this paper, a genetic algorithm support vector machine (GA-SVM) based symbol detection method is proposed for chaotic baseband wireless communication system (CBWCS), by this way, treating the problem from a different viewpoint, the symbol decoding process is converted to be a binary classification through GA-SVM model. A trained GA-SVM model is used to decode the symbols directly at the receiver, so as to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of the CBWCS and simplify the symbol detection process by removing the channel identification and the threshold calculation process as compared to that using the calculated threshold to decode symbol in the traditional methods. The simulation results show that the proposed method has better BER performance in both the static and time-varying wireless channels. The experimental results, based on the wireless open-access research platform, indicate that the BER of the proposed GA-SVM based symbol detection approach is superior to the other counterparts under a practical wireless multipath channel.

Design and Performance Analysis of a Chaotic Pseudo Orthogonal Carriers Multi-Access Communication System

A Chaotic Pseudo Orthogonal Carriers Multi-Access (CPOCMA) communication based on Chaotic Pseudo Orthogonal Shape-forming Filter (CPOSF) bank, Chaotic Pseudo Orthogonal Matched Filter (CPOMF) bank and Chaotic Pseudo Orthogonal Correlation Filter (CPOCF) bank is proposed in this work. At the transmitter, the multiple CPOSFs are used to generate pseudo orthogonal signals. It provides a good trade-off between spectrum efficiency and high bit transmission rate. At the receiver, the CPOMF bank and CPOCF bank are used to maximize the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and extract the received information from each sub-channel, respectively. The received signal is demodulated by averaging the sampled sequence from the matched filter bank output and sorting the sampling sequence from the CPOCF bank output to recover the transmitted information bits. The proposed CPOCMA communication system not only offers multiuser access with high reliability and high data transmission rate, but also achieves higher spectrum efficiency. Analytical Bit Error Rate (BER) expression is derived. The proposed communication system performance has been evaluated in Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel and wireless channel by both numerical simulations and experiments based on a Wireless open-Access Research Platform (WARP), the results show the effectiveness and the superiority of the proposed method.

Inertia and feedback parameters adaptive control of virtual synchronous generator

The virtual synchronous generator technology analogs the characteristics of the synchronous generator via the controller design. It improved the stability of the grid systems which include the new energy. At the same time, according to the adjustable characteristics of the virtual synchronous generator parameters, the parameter adaptive adjustment is used to improve the dynamic performance of the system. However, the traditional virtual synchronous generator adaptive control technology still has two drawbacks: on the one hand, the large-scale adjustment of the damping droop coefficient and the virtual moment of inertia requires the system having a high energy storage margin; On the other hand, there is a power overshoot phenomenon in the transient regulation process, which is disadvantageous to the power equipment. First, this paper provides a convenient adjustment method for improving the transient stability of the system, the system damping is adjusted by introducing the output speed feedback. Second, according to the transient power-angle characteristics of the system, a parameter adaptive control strategy is proposed, which shortens the transient adjustment time and ensures that the deviation of the system frequency in the transient adjustment process is within the allowable range, and improves the transient performance of the grid frequency adjustment, at the same time, the power overshoot is suppressed. Finally, the experimental results show that the proposed control strategy is superior to the existing adaptive control strategy.

Grid-Forming Converters control based on DC voltage feedback

The renewable energy is connected to the power grid through power electronic converters, which are lack of make the inertia of synchronous generator/machine (SM) be lost. The increasing penetration of renewable energy in power system weakens the frequency and voltage stability. The Grid-Forming Converters (GFCs) simulate the function of synchronous motor through control method in order to improve the stability of power grid by providing inertia and stability regulation mechanism. This kind of converter control methods include virtual synchronous machine, schedulable virtual oscillator control and so on. These control method mainly use AC side state feedback and do not monitor the DC side state. This paper analyzes the control strategy of GFC considering power grid stability, including Frequency Droop Control, Virtual Synchronous Machine Control and dispatchable Virtual Oscillator Control. The DC side voltage collapse problem is found when a large load disturbance occurs. The control methods of GFC considering DC side voltage feedback are proposed, which can ensure the synchronization characteristics of grid connection and solve the problem of DC side voltage collapse. The proposed method is verified by IEEE-9 bus system, which shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Effects of drug resistance in the tumour-immune system with chemotherapy treatment

Cancer is a term used to refer to a large set of diseases. The cancerous cells grow and divide and, as a result, they form tumours that grow in size. The immune system recognise the cancerous cells and attack them, though, it can be weakened by the cancer. One type of cancer treatment is chemotherapy, which uses drugs to kill cancer cells. Clinical, experimental, and theoretical research has been developed to understand the dynamics of cancerous cells with chemotherapy treatment, as well as the interaction between tumour growth and immune system. We study a mathematical model that describes the cancer growth, immune system response, and chemotherapeutic agents. The immune system is composed of resting cells that are converted to hunting cells to combat the cancer. In this work, we consider drug sensitive and resistant cancer cells. We show that the tumour growth can be controlled not only by means of different chemotherapy protocols, but also by the immune system that attacks both sensitive and resistant cancer cells. Furthermore, for all considered protocols, we demonstrate that the time delay from resting to hunting cells plays a crucial role in the combat against cancer cells.

Impulse control of chaos in the flexible shaft rotating-lifting system of the mono-silicon crystal puller

Chaos is shown to occur in the flexible shaft rotating-lifting (FSRL) system of the mono-silicon crystal puller. Chaos is, however, harmful for the quality of mono-silicon crystal production. Therefore, it should be suppressed. Many chaos control methods have been proposed theoretically and some have even been used in applications. For a practical plant displaying harmful chaos, engineers from a specified area usually face with the challenge to identifying chaos and to suppressing it by using a proper method. However, despite of the existing methods, chaos control method selection in the FSRL system is not a trivial task. For example, for the OGY method, if one cannot find a practical adjustable parameter, then the OGY method cannot be applied. An impulsive control method is being proposed which is efficiently able to suppress chaos in the FSRL system. The selection of the control parameters is obtained by using the Melnikov method. Simulation results show the correctness of our theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed chaos control method.

Nonlinear dynamics in the flexible shaft rotating-lifting system of silicon crystal puller using Czochralski method

Silicon crystal puller (SCP) is a key equipment in silicon wafer manufacture, which is, in turn, the base material for the most currently used integrated circuit (IC) chips. With the development of the techniques, the demand for longer mono-silicon crystal rod with larger diameter is continuously increasing in order to reduce the manufacture time and the price of the wafer. This demand calls for larger SCP with increasing height, however, it causes serious swing phenomenon of the crystal seed. The strong swing of the seed causes difficulty in the solidification and increases the risk of mono-silicon growth failure. The main aim of this paper is to analyze the nonlinear dynamics in the FSRL system of the SCP. A mathematical model for the swing motion of the FSRL system is derived. The influence of relevant parameters, such as system damping, excitation amplitude and rotation speed, on the stability and the responses of the system are analyzed. The stability of the equilibrium, bifurcation and chaotic motion are demonstrated, which are often observed in practical situations. Melnikov method is used to derive the possible parameter region that leads to chaotic motion. Three routes to chaos are identified in the FSRL system, including period doubling, symmetry-breaking bifurcation and interior crisis. The work in this paper explains the complex dynamics in the FSRL system of the SCP, which will be helpful for the SCP designers in order to avoid the swing phenomenon in the SCP.

Synchronization stability and circuit experiment of hyperchaos with time delay using impulse control

Secure communication using hyperchaos has a better potential performance, but hyperchaotic impulse circuits synchronization is a challenging task. In this paper, an impulse control method is proposed for the synchronization of two hyperchaotic Chen circuits. The sufficient conditions for the synchronization of hyperchaotic systems using the impulse control are given. The upper bound of the impulse interval is derived to assure the synchronization error system to be asymptotically stable. Simulation and circuit experiment show the correctness of the analysis and feasibility of the proposed method.

Artificial Intelligence Enhances the Performance of Chaos-based Wireless Communication

Some new findings for chaos-based wireless communication systems have been identified recently. First, chaos has proven to be the optimal communication waveform because chaotic signals can achieve the maximum signal to noise ratio at receiver with the simplest matched filter. Second, the information transmitted in chaotic signals is not modified by the multipath wireless channel. Third, chaos properties can be used to relief inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by multipath propagation. Although recent work has reported the method of obtaining the optimal threshold to eliminate the ISI in chaos-based wireless communication, its practical implementation is still a challenge. By knowing the channel parameters and all symbols, especially the future symbol to be transmitted in advance, it is almost an impossible task in the practical communication systems. Owning to Artificial intelligence (AI) recent developments, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with deep learning structure is being proposed to predict future symbols based on the received signal, so as to further reduce ISI and obtain better bit error rate (BER) performance as compared to that used the existing sub-optimal threshold. The feature of the method involves predicting the future symbol and obtaining a better threshold suitable for time variant channel. Numerical simulation and experimental results validate our theory and the superiority of the proposed method.

Spike-burst chimera states in an adaptive exponential integrate-and-fire neuronal network

Chimera states are spatiotemporal patterns in which coherence and incoherence coexist. We observe the coexistence of synchronous (coherent) and desynchronous (incoherent) domains in a neuronal network. The network is composed of coupled adaptive exponential integrate-and-fire neurons that are connected by means of chemical synapses. In our neuronal network, the chimera states exhibit spatial structures both with spikes and bursts activities. Furthermore, those desynchronised domains not only have either spike or burst activity, but we show that the structures switch between spikes and bursts as the time evolves. Moreover, we verify the existence of multicluster chimera states.

Experimental Wireless Communication Using Chaotic Baseband Waveform

Some new properties of the chaotic signal have been implemented in communication system applications recently. However, due to the broadband property of the chaotic signal, it is very difficult for a practical transducer or antenna to convert such a broadband signal into a signal that would be suitable for practical band-limited wireless channel. Thus, the use of chaos property to improve the performance of conventional communication system without changing the system configuration becomes a critical issue in communication with chaos. In this paper, chaotic baseband waveform generated by a chaotic shaping filter is used to show that this difficulty can be overcome. The generated continuous-time chaotic waveform is proven to be topologically conjugate to a symbolic sequence, allowing the encoding of arbitrary information sequence into the chaotic waveform. A finite impulse response filter is used to replace the impulse control in order to encode information into the chaotic signal, simplifying the algorithm for high speed communication. A wireless communication system is being proposed using the chaotic signal as the baseband waveform, which is compatible with the general wireless communication platform. The matched filter and decoding method, using chaos properties, enhance the communication system performance. The Bit Error Rate (BER) and computational complexity performances of the proposed wireless communication system are analyzed and compared with the conventional wireless systems. The results show that the proposed chaotic baseband waveform of our wireless communication method has better BER performance in both the static and time-varying wireless channels. The experimental results, based on the commonly-used wireless open-access research platform, show that the BER of the proposed method is superior to the conventional method under a practical wireless multipath channel.

Self adaptation of chimera states

Chimera states in spatiotemporal dynamical systems have been investigated in physical, chemical, and biological systems, and have been shown to be robust against random perturbations. How do chimera states achieve their robustness? We uncover a self-adaptation behavior by which, upon a spatially localized perturbation, the coherent component of the chimera state spontaneously drifts to an optimal location as far away from the perturbation as possible, exposing only its incoherent component to the perturbation to minimize the disturbance. A systematic numerical analysis of the evolution of the spatiotemporal pattern of the chimera state towards the optimal stable state reveals an exponential relaxation process independent of the spatial location of the perturbation, implying that its effects can be modeled as restoring and damping forces in a mechanical system and enabling the articulation of a phenomenological model. Not only is the model able to reproduce the numerical results, it can also predict the trajectory of drifting. Our finding is striking as it reveals that, inherently, chimera states possess a kind of "intelligence" in achieving robustness through self adaptation. The behavior can be exploited for controlled generation of chimera states with their coherent component placed in any desired spatial region of the system.

Radio-wave communication with chaos

The invariance of the Lyapunov exponent of a chaotic signal as it propagates along a wireless transmission channel provides a theoretical base for the application of chaos in wireless communication. In additive Gaussian channel, the chaotic signal is proved to be the optimal coherent communication waveform in the sense of using the very simple matched filter to obtain the maximum signal-to-noise ratio. The properties of chaos can be used to reduce simply and effectively the Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) and to achieve low bit error rate in the wireless communication system. However, chaotic signals need very wide bandwidth to be transmitted in the practical channel, which is difficult for the practical transducer or antenna to convert such a broad band signal. To solve this problem, in this work, the chaotic signal is applied to a radio-wave communication system, and the corresponding coding and decoding algorithms are proposed. A hybrid chaotic system is used as the pulse-shaping filter to obtain the baseband signal, and the corresponding matched filter is used at the receiver, instead of the conventional low-pass filter, to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio. At the same time, the symbol judgment threshold determined by the chaos property is used to reduce the Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) effect. Simulations and virtual channel experiments show that the radio-wave communication system using chaos obtains lower bit error rate in the multi-path transmission channel compared with the traditional radio-wave communication system using Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) modulation technology and channel equalization.

A Novel Carrier Waveform Inter-Displacement Modulation Method in Underwater Communication Channel

As the main way of underwater wireless communication, underwater acoustic communication is one of the focuses of ocean research. Compared with the free space wireless communication channel, the underwater acoustic channel suffers from more severe multipath effect, the less available bandwidth and the even complex noise. The underwater acoustic channel is one of the most complicated wireless communication channels. To achieve a reliable underwater acoustic communication, Phase Shift Keying (PSK) modulation and Passive Time Reversal Mirror (PTRM) equalization are considered to be a suitable scheme. However, due to the serious distortion of the received signal caused by the channel, this scheme suffers from a high Bit Error Rate (BER) under the condition of the low Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). To solve this problem, we proposes a Carrier Waveform Inter-Displacement (CWID) modulation method based on the Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM) PSK and PTRM scheme. The new communication scheme reduces BER by increasing the difference from the carrier waveform for different symbols. Simulation results show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Collective Almost Synchronization in Complex Networks

This work introduces the phenomenon of Collective Almost Synchronization (CAS), which describes a universal way of how patterns can appear in complex networks even for small coupling strengths. The CAS phenomenon appears due to the existence of an approximately constant local mean field and is characterized by having nodes with trajectories evolving around periodic stable orbits. Common notion based on statistical knowledge would lead one to interpret the appearance of a local constant mean field as a consequence of the fact that the behavior of each node is not correlated to the behaviors of the others. Contrary to this common notion, we show that various well known weaker forms of synchronization (almost, time-lag, phase synchronization, and generalized synchronization) appear as a result of the onset of an almost constant local mean field. If the memory is formed in a brain by minimising the coupling strength among neurons and maximising the number of possible patterns, then the CAS phenomenon is a plausible explanation for it.
