Electronic band gaps and transport properties in aperiodic bilayer graphene superlattices of Thue-Morse sequence

We investigate electronic band structure and transport properties in bilayer graphene superlattices of Thue-Morse sequence. It is interesting to find that the zero-$\bar{k}$ gap center is sensitive to interlayer coupling $t'$, and the centers of all gaps shift versus $t'$ at a linear way. Extra Dirac points may emerge at $k_{y}\ne$0, and when the extra Dirac points are generated in pairs, the electronic conductance obeys a diffusive law, and the Fano factor tends to be 1/3 as the order of Thue-Morse sequence increases. Our results provide a flexible and effective way to control the transport properties in graphene.

Regular quantum plasmons in segments of graphene nanoribbons

Graphene plasmons have advantages over noble metal plasmons, such as high tunability and low loss. However, for graphene nanostructures smaller than 10 nm, little is known about their plasmons or whether a regular plasmonic behavior exists, despite their potential applications. Here, we present first-principles calculations of plasmon excitations in zigzag graphene nanoribbon segments. Regular plasmonic behavior is found: Only one plasmon mode exists in the low-energy regime (< 1.5 eV). The classical electrostatic scaling law still approximately holds when the width (W) is larger than about 1.5 nm but totally fails when W < 1.5 nm due to quantum effects. The scaling with different doping densities shows that the plasmon is nearly free-electron plasmon instead of Dirac plasmon.

Hidden $(π,0)$ instability as an itinerant origin of bicollinear antiferromagnetism in Fe$_{1+x}$Te

By calculating orbitally resolved Pauli susceptibilities within maximally localized Wannier orbital basis transformed from first principles band structures, we find that magnetism in Fe$_{1+x}$Te still has its itinerant origin even without Fermi surface nesting, provided orbital modulation of particle-hole excitations are considered. This leads to strong magnetic instabilities at wave vector (0,$π$)/($π$,0) in d$_{xz}$/d$_{yz}$ orbitals that are responsible for the bicollinear antiferromagnetic state as extra electrons donated from excess Fe are considered. Magnetic exchange coupling between excess Fe and in-plane Fe further stabilizes the bicollinear antiferromagnetic order. Our results reveal that magnetism and superconductivity in iron chalcogenides may have different orbital origin, as Pauli susceptibilities of different orbitals evolve differently as a function of concentration of excess Fe and height of the chalcogen atom measured from the iron plane.

Structural and vibrational properties of phenanthrene under pressure

The structural and vibrational properties of phenanthrene are measured at high pressures up to 30.2 GPa by Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques. Two phase transitions are observed in raman spectra under pressures of 2.3 GPa and 5.4 GPa with significant changes of intermolecular and intramolecular vibrational modes, and all the raman peaks disappeared in the luminesce background above 10.2 GPa. Upon further compression above 20.0 GPa, three broad bands are observed respectively around 1600, 2993 and 3181 cm$^{-1}$ in Raman spectra, strongly indicating that phenanthrene has transformed into amorphous hydrogenated carbon. Based on x-ray diffraction, the structures of corresponding phases observed in Raman spectra are identified with space group of $P_{\rm}2_{1}$ for phase I at 0-2.2 GPa, $P_{\rm}$2/\emph{m} for phase II at 2.2-5.6 GPa and $P_{\rm}$2/\emph{m}+\emph{Pmmm} for phase III at 5.6-11.4 GPa, and the structure above 11.4 GPa is identified with space group of \emph{Pmmm}. Although phenanthrene has amorphized above 20.0 GPa, the amorphous hydrogenated carbon clusters still remain the crystalline characteristic based on x-ray diffraction patterns. Our results suggest that the long-range periodicity and the local disorder state coexist in phenanthrene at high pressures.

Quantum Monte Carlo Study of Pairing Symmetry and Correlation in Iron-based Superconductors

We perform a systematic quantum Monte Carlo study of the pairing correlation in the $S_4$ symmetric microscopic model for iron-based superconductors. It is found that the pairing with an extensive s-wave symmetry robustly dominates over other pairings at low temperature in reasonable parameter region. The pairing susceptibility, the effective pairing interaction and the $(π,0)$antiferromagnetic correlation strongly increase as the on-site Coulomb interaction increases, indicating the importance of the effect of electron-electron correlation. Our non-biased numerical results provide a unified understanding of superconducting mechanism in iron-pnictides and iron-chalcogenides and demonstrate that the superconductivity is driven by strong electron-electron correlation effects.

Phase Diagram of a Spin-Orbit Coupled Fermi Gases in a Bilayer Optical Lattice

We investigate the stability of helical superfluid phase in a spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas loaded in a bilayer optical lattice. The phase diagram of the system is constructed in the mean field framework. We investigate the topological properties of the superfluid phases by a nontrivial application of the Fermi surface topological invariant to our time-reversal invariant system with degeneracies on the Fermi surface. We find that there is a first-order phase boundary in the phase diagram of half filling case and the superfluid phases are all topological trivial. The superfluid phase is topological nontrivial when the filling fraction deviates from the half filling. In the topological nontrivial superfluid phase, a full pairing gap exists in the bulk and gapless helical Majorana edge states exist at the boundary.

High-pressure phases of a hydrogen-rich compound: tetramethylgermane

The vibrational and structural properties of a hydrogen-rich Group IVa hydride, Ge(CH$_3$)$_4$, are studied by combining Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements at room temperature and at pressures up to 30.2 GPa. Both techniques allow the obtaining of complementary information on the high-pressure behaviors and yield consistent phase transitions at 1.4 GPa for the liquid to solid and 3.0, 5.4, and 20.3 GPa for the solid to solid. The four high-pressure solid phases are identified to have the cubic, orthorhombic, monoclinic and monoclinic crystal structures with space groups of Pa-3 for phase I, Pnma for phase II, P2$_1$/c for phase III, and P2$_1$ for phase IV, respectively. These transitions are suggested to result from the changes in the inter- and intra-molecular bonding of this compound. The softening of some Raman modes on CH$_3$ groups and their sudden disappearance indicate that Ge(CH$_3$)$_4$ might be an ideal compound to realize metallization and even high-temperature superconductivity at modest static pressure for laboratory capability.

Construct order parameter from the spectra of mutual information

In this paper, we try to establish a connection between a quantum information concept, i.e. the mutual information, and the conventional order parameter in condensed matter physics. We show that a non-vanishing mutual information at a long distance means the existence of long-range order. By analyzing the entanglement spectra of the reduced density matrix that are used to calculate the mutual information, we show how to find the local order operator used to identify various phases with long-rang order.

Electronic band gaps and transport in aperiodic graphene superlattices of Thue-Morse sequence

We have studied the electronic properties in aperiodic graphene superlattices of Thue-Morse sequence. Although the structure is aperiodic, an unusual Dirac point (DP) does exist and its location is exactly at the position of the zero-averaged wave number (zero-$\bar{k})$. Furthermore, the zero-$\bar{k}$ gap associated with the DP is robust against the lattice constants and the incident angles, and multi-DPs can appear under the suitable conditions. A resultant controllability of electron transport in Thue-Morse sequence is predicted, which may facilitate the development of many graphene-based electronics.

Behavior of a Magnetic Impurity in Graphene in the Presence of a Vacancy

With quantum Monte Carlo methods, we investigate the consequences of placing a magnetic adatom adjacent to a vacancy in a graphene sheet. We find that instead of the adatom properties depending on the energy of the adatom orbital, as in a single impurity problem, they develop a dependence on the energy of the split localized state associated with the single vacancy problem. Shifting the chemical potential through this experimentally more accessible energy scale reveals novel behavior in the spectral density, magnetic susceptibility, and the correlations of the adatom spin and charge with those of the conduction electrons. In general, the behavior of the adatom in the presence of a vacancy differs significantly from its behavior in the absence of a vacancy.

A General Mechanism for Orbital Selective Phase Transitions

Based on the analysis of a two-orbital Hubbard model within a mean-field approach, we propose a mechanism for an orbital selective phase transition (OSPT) where coexistence of localized and itinerant electrons can be realized. We show that this OSPT exists both at and near half filling even in the absence of crystal field splittings or when bandwidths, orbital degeneracies and magnetic states are equal for both orbitals provided the orbitals have different band dispersions. Such conditions should be generally satisfied in many materials. We find that this OSPT is not sensitive to the strength of Hund's rule coupling and that heavy doping favors the collinear antiferromagnetic state over the OSPT. We discuss our results in relation to the iron pnictides.

Pulse control of sudden transition for two qubits in XY spin baths and quantum phase transition

We study the dynamics of two initially correlated qubits coupled to their own separate spin baths modeled by a XY spin chain and find the explicit expression of the quantum discord for the system. A sudden transition is found to exist between classical and quantum decoherence by choosing certain initial states. We show that the sudden transition happens near the critical point, which provides a new way to characterize the quantum phase transition. Furthermore, we propose a scheme to prolong the transition time of the quantum discord by applying the bang-bang pulses.

Pairing in graphene: A quantum Monte Carlo study

To address the issue of electron correlation driven superconductivity in graphene, we perform a systematic quantum Monte Carlo study of the pairing correlation in the t-U-V Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice. For V=0 and close to half filling, we find that pairing with d+id symmetry dominates pairing with extended-s symmetry. However, as the system size or the on-site Coulomb interaction increases, the long-range part of the d+id pairing correlation decreases and tends to vanish in the thermodynamic limit. An inclusion of nearest-neighbor interaction V, either repulsive or attractive, has a small effect on the extended-s pairing correlation, but strongly suppresses the d+id pairing correlation.

A spin chain with spiral orders: perspectives of quantum information and mechanical response

In this paper, we study the ground state of a one-dimensional exactly solvable model with a spiral order. While the model's energy spectra is the same as the one-dimensional transverse field Ising model, its ground state manifests spiral order with various periods. The quantum phase transition from a spiral-order phase to a paramagnetic phase is investigated in perspectives of quantum information science and mechanics. We show that the modes of the ground-state fidelity and its susceptibility can tell the change of periodicity around the critical point. We study also the spin torsion modulus which defines the coefficient of the potential energy stored under a small rotation. We find that at the critical point, it is a constant; while away from the critical point, the spin torsion modulus tends to zero.

Magnetic Impurities in Graphene

We used a quantum Monte Carlo method to study the magnetic impurity adatoms on graphene. We found that by tuning the chemical potential we could switch the values of the impurity's local magnet moment between relatively large and small values. Our computations of the impurity's spectral density found its behavior to differ significantly from that of an impurity in a normal metal and our computations of the charge-charge and spin-spin correlations between the impurity and the conduction band electrons found them to be strongly suppressed. In general our results are consistent with those from poor man's scaling and numerical renormalization group methods.

Scaling of quantum Zeno dynamics in thermodynamic systems

We study the quantum Zeno effect (QZE) in two many-body systems, namely the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model and the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model, coupled to a central qubit. Our result shows that in order to observe QZE in the Ising model, the frequency of the projective measurement should be of comparable order to that of the system sizes. The same criterion also holds in the symmetry broken phase of the LMG model while in the model's polarized phase, the QZE can be easily observed.

Influence of electronic correlations on orbital polarizations in the parent and doped iron pnictides

Orbital polarization and electronic correlation are two essential aspects in understanding the normal state and superconducting properties of multiorbital FeAs-based superconductors. In this Letter, we present a systematical study on the orbital polarization of iron pnictides from weak to strong Coulomb correlations within the KRSB approach. The magnetic phase diagram of the two-orbital model for LaFeAsO clearly shows that the striped antiferromagnetic metallic phase with considerable orbital polarization exists over a wide doping range. The reversal of the orbital polarization occurs in the intermediate correlation regime.A small crystal field splitting enhances the orbital density wave order.

Effect of Spin Correlations on Multi-orbital Metal-Insulator Transitions and Suppression of Orbital Selective Mott Transitions

We present the influence of spin correlation on the metal-insulator transitions (MIT) in two-orbital Hubbard models by the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson approach. In the asymmetric half-filling situation, the two orbits simultaneously transit from conducting to insulating states with the increase of Coulomb correlation, accompanied by a paramagnetic (PM)-antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition. The orbital selective Mott transition found in the PM condition is completely suppressed over a wide correlation range, though it may exist in the systems away from half-filling. In the insulating state, the system crosses over from a partially-polarized spin-gapped phase in the intermediate correlation regime to an almost fully-polarized Mott insulating phase in the strong correlation regime. These results demonstrate that the spin modulation to the quasiparticle spectra brings much rich and more interesting MIT scenario in multi-orbital correlated systems.
