Topological defects as relics of spontaneous symmetry breaking from black hole physics

Formation and evolution of topological defects in course of non-equilibrium symmetry breaking phase transitions is of wide interest in many areas of physics, from cosmology through condensed matter to low temperature physics. Its study in strongly coupled systems, in absence of quasiparticles, is especially challenging. We investigate breaking of U(1) symmetry and the resulting spontaneous formation of vortices in a $(2+1)$-dimensional holographic superconductor employing gauge/gravity duality, a `first-principles' approach to study strongly coupled systems. Magnetic fluxons with quantized fluxes are seen emerging in the post-transition superconducting phase. As expected in type II superconductors, they are trapped in the cores of the order parameter vortices. The dependence of the density of these topological defects on the quench time, the dispersion of the typical winding numbers in the superconductor, and the vortex-vortex correlations are consistent with predictions of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism.

Thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture in Born-Infeld-anti-de Sitter black holes

We examine the laws of thermodynamics and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture in the normal and extended phase space of Born-Infeld-anti-de Sitter black hole by considering a charged particle absorption. In the normal phase space, the first and second law of thermodynamics as well as the weak cosmic censorship are still valid. However, in the extended phase space, the second law of thermodynamics is violated for double-horizon black holes and part of single-horizon black holes. The first law of thermodynamics and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture are still valid for all black holes. In addition, we find that the shift of the metric function, which determines the locations of the horizons, takes the same form at the minimum point in both the normal and extended phase space, indicating that the weak cosmic censorship conjecture is independent of the thermodynamic phase space.

Thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture in the Kerr-AdS black hole

We investigate the laws of thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture in the normal and extended phase space of a Kerr-AdS black hole by analyzing the energy-momentum relation of the absorbed fermion dropping into the horizon. In the normal phase space, the first law, second law as well as the weak cosmic censorship conjecture are found to be valid in all the initial states of the black hole. However, in the extended phase space, although the first law and weak cosmic censorship conjecture are still valid, the second law becomes more subtle. We find that the validity or violation of the second law depends on the spin parameter, the radius of the AdS spacetime, and their variations. In addition, in the extended phase space, the configurations of the extremal and near-extremal Kerr-AdS black holes are unchanged as the fermions are absorbed since the final and initial states are the same.

Shadows and photon spheres with spherical accretions in the four-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet black hole

We investigate the shadows and photon spheres of the four-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet black hole with the static and infalling spherical accretions. We show that for both cases, the shadow and photon sphere are always present. The radii of the shadow and photon sphere are independent of the profiles of accretion for a fixed Gauss-Bonnet constant, implying that the shadow is a signature of the spacetime geometry and it is hardly influenced by accretion in this case. Because of the Doppler effect, the shadow of the infalling accretion is found to be darker than that of the static one. We also investigate the effect of the Gauss-Bonnet constant on the shadow and photon sphere, and find that the larger the Gauss-Bonnet constant is, the smaller the radii of the shadow and photon sphere will be. In particular, the observed specific intensity increases with the increasing of the Gauss-Bonnet constant.

Influence of quintessence dark energy on the shadow of black hole

We investigate the effects of quintessence dark energy on the shadows of black hole, surrounded by various profiles of accretions. For the thin disk accretion, the images of the black hole comprises the dark region and bright region, including direct emission, lensing rings and photon rings. Although their details depend on the form of the emission, generically, the direct emission plays a major role for the observed brightness of the black hole, while the lensing ring makes a small contribution and photon ring makes a negligible contribution. The existence of cosmological horizon also plays an important role in the shadows, since the observer in the domain of outer communications is nearby the cosmological horizon. For the spherically symmetric accretion, the static and infalling matters are considered. We find that the positions of photon spheres are the same for both static and infalling accretions. However, the observed specific intensity of the image for the infalling accretion is darker than the static accretion, due to the Doppler effect of the infalling movement.

Lorentzian quantum cosmology in novel Gauss-Bonnet gravity from Picard-Lefschetz methods

In this paper we study some aspects of classical and quantum cosmology in the novel-Gauss-Bonnet (nGB) gravity in four space-time dimensions. Starting with a generalised Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson Walker (FLRW) metric respecting homogeneity and isotropicity in arbitrary space-time dimension $D$, we find the action of theory in four spacetime dimension where the limit $D\to4$ is smoothly obtained after an integration by parts. The peculiar rescaling of Gauss-Bonnet coupling by factor of $D-4$ results in a non-trivial contribution to the action. We study the system of equation of motion to first order nGB coupling. We then go on to compute the transition probability from one $3$-geometry to another directly in Lorentzian signature. We make use of combination of WKB approximation and Picard-Lefschetz (PL) theory to achieve our aim. PL theory allows to analyse the path-integral directly in Lorentzian signature without doing Wick rotation. Due to complication caused by non-linear nature of action, we compute the transition amplitude to first order in nGB coupling. We find non-trivial correction coming from the nGB coupling to the transition amplitude, even if the analysis was done perturbatively. We use this result to investigate the case of classical boundary conditions.

Cosmic evolution in novel-Gauss Bonnet Gravity

In this short paper we investigate any non-trivial effect the novel Gauss-Bonnet gravity may give rise in the cosmic evolution of the Universe in four spacetime dimensions. We start by considering a generic Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric respecting homogeneity and isotropicity in arbitrary space-time dimension $D$. The metric depends on two functions: scale factor and lapse. Plugging this metric in novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity action, doing an integration by parts and then take the limit of $D\to4$ give us a dynamical action in four spacetime dimensions for scale factor and lapse. The peculiar rescaling of Gauss-Bonnet coupling by factor of $D-4$ results in a non-trivial contribution in the action of the theory. In this paper we study this action. We investigate the dynamics of scale-factor and behavior of lapse in an empty Universe (no matter). Due to complexity of the problem we study the theory to first order in Gauss-Bonnet coupling and solve system of equation to the first order. We compute the first order correction to the on-shell action of the empty Universe and find that its sign is opposite of the leading order part. We discuss it consequences.

Formation and critical dynamics of topological defects in Lifshitz holography

We examine the formation and critical dynamics of topological defects via Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a (2+1)-dimensional quantum critical point, which is conjectured to dual to a Lifshitz geometry. Quantized magnetic fluxoids are spontaneously generated and trapped in the cores of order parameter vortices, which is a feature of type II superconductors. Time evolution of the average condensate is found to lag behind the instantaneous equilibrium value of the order parameter, a typical phenomenon in nonequilibrium dynamics. Scalings of vortex number density and the "freeze-out" time match the predictions from Kibble-Zurek mechanism. From these scalings, the dynamic and static critical exponents in the boundary field theory are found, at least at finite temperature, to be irrespective of the Lifshitz exponent in the bulk.

Lorentzian quantum cosmology with $R^2$ correction

Quantum mechanical transition amplitudes directly tells the probability of each transition and which one is more favourable. Path-integrals offers a systematic methodology to compute this quantum mechanical process in a consistent manner. Although it is not complicated in simple quantum mechanical system but defining path-integral legitimately becomes highly nontrivial in the context of quantum-gravity, where apart from usual issues of renormalizability, regularisation, measure, gauge-fixing, boundary conditions, one still has to define the sensible integration contour for convergence. Picard-Lefschetz (PL) theory offers a unique way to find a contour of integration based on the analysis of saddle points and the steepest descent/ascent flow lines in the complex plane. In this paper we make use of PL-theory to investigate Lorentzian quantum cosmology where the gravity gets modified in the ultraviolet with the $R^2$ corrections. We approach the problem perturbatively and compute the transition amplitude in the saddle point approximation to first order in higher-derivative coupling. This perturbative approximation is valid in certain regimes but the approximation cannot be used to address issues of very early Universe or no-boundary proposal.

Phase Separation and Exotic Vortex Phases in a Two-Species Holographic Superfluid

At a finite temperature, the stable equilibrium states of a coupled two-component superfluid with the same mass in both non-rotating and rotating cases can be obtained by studying its real time dynamics via holography, the equilibrium state is the final stable state that does not change in time anymore in the evolution process . Without rotation, the spatial phase separated states of the two components become more stable than the miscible condensates state when the direct repulsive inter-component coupling constant $η>η_c=0.05$ when the Josephson coupling $ε$ is turned off. While a finite $ε$ will always prevent the two species to be separated spatially. Under rotation, with vanishing $ε$, the quantum fluid reveals many equilibrium structures of vortex states by varying the $η$ from negative to positive, the interlaced vortex lattices undergo a phase transition to vortex sheets with each component made up of chains of single quantized vortices.

Vortex Lattice in a Rotating Holographic Superfluid

By utilizing the AdS/CFT correspondence, we explore the dynamics of strongly coupled superfluid vortices in a disk with constant angular velocity. Each vortex in the vortex lattice is quantized with vorticity one from the direct inspection of their phases. As the angular velocity of the disk is greater than a critical value, the first vortex will be excited as expected from theoretical predictions. The subsequent two and more vortices are also generated by increasingly rotating the disk, resulting in the remarkable step transitions for the angular velocity to excite each individual vortex. When the vortex number is large enough, the density of vortices is found to be linearly proportional to the angular velocity, which matches the Feynman relation very well.

Non-locality effect on the entanglement entropy in deSitter

We investigate the effect of infrared non-locality on the entanglement between two causally separated open-charts in the deSitter space-time. Inspired by the work of Maldacena and Pimentel who gave a precise methodology for the computation of the long-range entanglement for the local massive scalar field theory on deSitter space-time, we aim to investigate the change in behaviour of this long-range entanglement due to the presence of infrared non-locality in the theory. By considering a nonlocal scalar field theory where the non-locality becomes important in the infrared, we follow the footsteps of Maldacena and Pimentel to compute the entanglement entropy of the free non-local scalar field theory in the Bunch-Davies vacuum. It is found that the presence of infrared non-locality will have strong effect on the long-range entanglement. In some case it is noted that if the strength of non-locality is large then it will tend to decrease the long-range entanglement in the infrared. We also consider the behaviour of Rényi entropy, where a strong role of non-locality on the entropy is noticed.

Universal Critical Exponents of Non-Equilibrium Phase Transitions from Holography

We study the critical exponents in the universal scaling laws of a holographic non-equilibrium steady state nearby its critical point of phase transition, which is driven by an AC electric field sitting in the boundary of the bulk. The applied electric filed drives the initial superconducting state into a non-equilibrium steady state with vanishing condensate as its amplitude is greater than a critical value. In the vicinity of the non-equilibrium critical point, we numerically calculate the six static and one dynamical critical exponents, and find that they have similar values to those in equilibrium systems within numerical errors.

Influence of inhomogeneities on holographic mutual information and butterfly effect

We study the effect of inhomogeneity, which is induced by the graviton mass in massive gravity, on the mutual information and the chaotic behavior of a 2+1-dimensional field theory from the gauge/gravity duality. When the system is near-homogeneous, the mutual information increases as the graviton mass grows. However, when the system is far from homogeneity, the mutual information decreases as the graviton mass increases. By adding the perturbations of energy into the system, we investigate the dynamical mutual information in the shock wave geometry. We find that the greater perturbations disrupt the mutual information more rapidly, which resembles the butterfly effect in chaos theory. Besides, the greater inhomogeneity reduces the dynamical mutual information more quickly just as in the static case.

Holographic Thermalization and Generalized Vaidya-AdS Solutions in Massive Gravity

We investigate the effect of massive graviton on the holographic thermalization process. Before doing this, we first find out the generalized Vaidya-AdS solutions in the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity by directly solving the gravitational equations. Then, we study the thermodynamics of these Vaidya-AdS solutions by using the Minsner-Sharp energy and unified first law, which also shows that the massive gravity is in a thermodynamic equilibrium state. Moreover, we adopt the two-point correlation function at equal time to explore the thermalization process in the dual field theory, and to see how the graviton mass parameter affects this process from the viewpoint of AdS/CFT correspondence. Our results show that the graviton mass parameter will increase the holographic thermalization process.

On Holographic Entanglement Entropy with Second Order Excitations

We study the low-energy corrections to the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) in the boundary CFT by perturbing the bulk geometry up to second order excitations. Focusing on the case that the boundary subsystem is a strip, we show that the area of the bulk minimal surface can be expanded in terms of the conserved charges, such as mass, angular momentum and electric charge of the AdS black brane. We also calculate the variation of the energy in the subsystem and verify the validity of the first law-like relation of thermodynamics at second order. Moreover, the HEE is naturally bounded at second order perturbations if the cosmic censorship conjecture for the dual black hole still holds.

Vortex in holographic two-band superfluid/superconductor

We construct numerically static vortex solutions in a holographic model of two-band superconductor with an interband Josephson coupling in both the superfluid and superconductor regime. We investigate the effects of the interband coupling on the order parameter of each superconducting band in the vortex solution, and we find that it is different for each of the two bands. We compute also the free energy, critical magnetic field, magnetic penetration length and coherence lengths for the two bands, and we study their dependence on the interband coupling and temperature. Interestingly, we find that the coherence lengths of the two bands are close to identical.

Holographic Josephson Junction from Massive Gravity

We study the holographic superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephon junction in the massive gravity. In the homogeneous case of the chemical potential, we find that the graviton mass will make the normal metal-superconductor phase transition harder to take place. In the holographic model of Josephson junction, it is found that the maximal tunneling current will decrease according to the graviton mass. Besides, the coherence length of the junction decreases as well with respect to the graviton mass. If one interprets the graviton mass as the effect of momentum dissipation in the boundary field theory, it indicates that the stronger the momentum dissipation is, the smaller the coherence length is.
