Role of face-to-face lecturing in large enrollment physics classes

The introduction of active learning into physics education at the university level may be crucial for improved learning outcomes. In UNIST (Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology), introductory physics has been redesigned to reduce the time spent on unidirectional lectures, while increasing the time devoted to classroom activities which facilitate the interaction between students and the instructors, as well as increasing the interaction between student peers. We measured student achievement and the degree of student satisfaction in order to evaluate the impact of the new learning methods on student learning outcomes. In the first semester, we redesigned a class of N_I = 176 students with a reduction in lecture hours and replaced them with pre-class self studies and in-class problem solving, and compared it with the traditional lecture based class of N_II = 161 students. We found that even though the midterm results of two classes were similar, the final average score of the redesigned class was 10 points higher than the traditional class. In the second semester, we applied our strategy to three classes but controlled the proportion of face-to-face lectures to the entire class meeting hours systematically to be 1/3 in `Class 1' of N1 = 160 students, 1/2 in 'Class 2' of N2 = 176 students and 2/3 in `Class 3' of N3 = 177 students. The Gaussian-Smoothed Wigner Function and Its Application to Precision Analysis

We study a class of phase-space distribution functions that is generated from a Gaussian convolution of the Wigner distribution function. This class of functions represents the joint count probability in simultaneous measurements of position and momentum. We show that, using these functions, one can determine the expectation value of a certain class of operators accurately, even if measurement data performed only with imperfect detectors are available. As an illustration, we consider the eight-port homodyne detection experiment that performs simultaneous measurements of two quadrature amplitudes of a radiation field.

Generating arbitrary photon-number entangled states for continuous-variable quantum informatics

We propose two experimental schemes that can produce an arbitrary photon-number entangled state (PNES) in a finite dimension. This class of entangled states naturally includes non-Gaussian continuous-variable (CV) states that may provide some practical advantages over the Gaussian counterparts (two-mode squeezed states). We particularly compare the entanglement characteristics of the Gaussian and the non-Gaussian states in view of the degree of entanglement and the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlation, and further discuss their applications to the CV teleportation and the nonlocality test. The experimental imperfection due to the on-off photodetectors with nonideal efficiency is also considered in our analysis to show the feasibility of our schemes within existing technologies.

Searches on star graphs and equivalent oracle problems

We examine a search on a graph among a number of different kinds of objects (vertices), one of which we want to find. In a standard graph search, all of the vertices are the same, except for one, the marked vertex, and that is the one we wish to find. We examine the case in which the unmarked vertices can be of different types, so the background against which the search is done is not uniform. We find that the search can still be successful, but the probability of success is lower than in the uniform background case, and that probability decreases with the number of types of unmarked vertices. We also show how the graph searches can be rephrased as equivalent oracle problems.

Loophole-free Bell test for continuous variables via wave and particle correlations

We derive two classes of multi-mode Bell inequalities under local realistic assumptions, which are violated only by the entangled states negative under partial transposition in accordance with the Peres conjecture. Remarkably, the failure of local realism can be manifested by exploiting wave and particle correlations of readily accessible continuous-variable states, with very large violation of inequalities insensitive to detector-efficiency, which makes a strong case for a loophole-free test.

Finding structural anomalies in graphs by means of quantum walks

We explore the possibility of using quantum walks on graphs to find structural anomalies, such as extra edges or loops, on a graph. We focus our attention on star graphs, whose edges are like spokes coming out of a central hub. If there are $N$ spokes, we show that a quantum walk can find an extra edge connecting two of the spokes or a spoke with a loop on it in $O(\sqrt{N})$ steps. We initially find that if all of the spokes have loops except one, the walk will not find the spoke without a loop, but this can be fixed if we choose the phase with which the particle is reflected from the vertex without the loop. Consequently, quantum walks can, under some circumstances, be used to find structural anomalies in graphs.

Quantum key distribution using vacuum-one-photon qubits: maximum number of transferable bits per particle

Quantum key distribution schemes which employ encoding on vacuum-one-photon qubits are capable of transferring more information bits per particle than the standard schemes employing polarization or phase coding. We calculate the maximum number of classical bits per particle that can be securely transferred when the key distribution is performed with the BB84 and B92 protocols, respectively, using the vacuum-one-photon qubits. In particular, we show that for a generalized B92 protocol with the vacuum-one-photon qubits, a maximum of two bits per particle can be securely transferred. We also demonstrate the advantage brought about by performing a generalized measurement that is optimized for unambiguous discrimination of the encoded states: the parameter range where the transfer of two bits per particle can be achieved is dramatically enhanced as compared to the corresponding parameter range of projective measurements.

Nonclassicality generated by photon annihilation-then-creation and creation-then-annihilation operations

We examine nonclassical properties of the field states generated by applying the photon annihilation-then-creation operation (AC) and creation-then-annihilation operation (CA) to the thermal and coherent states. Effects of repeated applications of AC and of CA are also studied. We also discuss experimental schemes to realize AC and CA with a cavity system using atom-field interactions.

Proposal for Direct, Local Measurement of Entanglement for Pure Bipartite Systems of Arbitrary Dimension

Based on the complementarity relation between entanglement of a composite system and the purity of a subsystem, we propose a simple method to measure the amount of entanglement. The method can be applied to a bipartite system in a pure state of any arbitrary dimension. It requires only single qudit rotations and straightforward probability measurements performed on one of the subsystems, and can thus be easily implemented experimentally using linear optical devices.

Multi-setting Bell inequality for qudits

We propose a generalized Bell inequality for two three-dimensional systems with three settings in each local measurement. It is shown that this inequality is maximally violated if local measurements are configured to be mutually unbiased and a composite state is maximally entangled. This feature is similar to Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality for two qubits but is in contrast with the two types of inequalities, Collins-Gisin-Linden-Massar-Popescu and Son-Lee-Kim, for high-dimensional systems. The generalization to aribitrary prime-dimensional systems is discussed.

Proposal for direct measurement of concurrence via visibility in a cavity QED system

An experimental scheme is proposed that allows direct measurement of the concurrence of a two-qubit cavity system. It is based on the cavity-QED technology using atoms as flying qubits and relies on the identity of the two-particle visibility of the atomic probability with the concurrence of the cavity system. The scheme works for any arbitrary pure initial state of the two-qubit cavity system.

Scalable cavity-QED-based scheme of generating entanglement of atoms and of cavity fields

We propose a cavity-QED-based scheme of generating entanglement between atoms. The scheme is scalable to an arbitrary number of atoms, and can be used to generate a variety of multipartite entangled states such as the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger, W, and cluster states. Furthermore, with a role switching of atoms with photons, the scheme can be used to generate entanglement between cavity fields. We also introduce a scheme that can generate an arbitrary multipartite field graph state.

Entanglement purification for high dimensional multipartite systems

We propose an entanglement purification protocol for high-dimensional multipartite systems. In the protocol we can select a subensemble in a pure generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state. This post-selection can be made by detecting the noise which contaminated the initial pure ensemble when the systems past through a noisy environment. For the detection of noise we investigate correlation properties of GHZ states and analyze their possible errors due to a noisy environment. We show that the presented protocol is more efficient than a simple generalization of the purification protocol for a bipartite state in high dimensions.

Universal output directionality of ultrahigh-Q single modes in a deformed microcavity with low index of refraction

Experimental investigation of the characteristics of quasi-bound states of a quadrupole deformed microcavity has revealed five distinct mode groups in cavity emission spectra with cavity quality factors different by orders of magnitude and consistently with much different intracavity mode distributions but with almost universal far-field emission patterns. These universal directionality of high Q modes are explained by a subtle manifestation of unstable manifolds of classical chaos in the formation of quasi-bound states.

Robustness of multiparty nonlocality to local decoherence

We investigate the robustness of multiparty nonlocality under local decoherence, acting independently and equally on each subsystems. To be specific, we consider an N-qubit GHZ state under depolarization, dephasing, or dissipation channel, and tested the nonlocality by violation of Mermin-Klyshko inequality, which is one of Bell's inequalities for multi-qubit systems. The results show that the robustness of nonlocality increases with the number of qubits, and that the nonlocality of an N-qubit GHZ state with even N is extremely persistent against dephasing.

Development of deformation-tunable quadrupolar microcavity

We have developed a technique for realizing a two-dimensional quadrupolar microcavity with its deformation variable from 0% to 20% continuously. We employed a microjet ejected from a noncircular orifice in order to generate a stationary column with modulated quadrupolar deformation in its cross section. Wavelength red shifts of low-order cavity modes due to shape deformation were measured and were found to be in good agreement with the wave calculation for the same deformation, indicating the observed deformation is quadrupolar in nature.

Chaos-assisted nonresonant optical pumping of quadrupole-deformed microlasers

Efficient nonresonant optical pumping of a high-Q scar mode in a two-dimensional quadrupole-deformed microlaser has been demonstrated based on ray and wave chaos. Three-fold enhancement in the lasing power was achieved at a properly chosen pumping angle. The experimental result is consistent with ray tracing and wave overlap integral calculations.
