Superadiabatic quantum friction suppression in finite-time thermodynamics

Optimal performance of thermal machines is reached by suppressing friction. Friction in quantum thermodynamics results from fast driving schemes that generate nonadiabatic excitations. The far-from-equilibrium dynamics of quantum devices can be tailored by shortcuts to adiabaticity to suppress quantum friction. We experimentally demonstrate friction-free superadiabatic strokes with a trapped unitary Fermi gas as a working substance and establish the equivalence between the superadiabatic mean work and its adiabatic value.

Mechanical Spectroscopy of Parametric Amplification in a High-Q Membrane Microresonator

We develop a stoichiometric SiN membrane-based optoelectromechanical system, in which the properties of the mechanical resonator can be dynamically controlled by the piezoelectric actuation. The mode splitting is observed in the mechanical response spectra of a phase-sensitive degenerate parametric amplifier. In addition, the quality factor Q of the membrane oscillator in this process is signicantly enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude due to the coherent amplication, reaching a Q factor of ~ 3*10^8 and a f*Q product of ~ 8*10^14 at room temperature. The thermomechanical noise squeezing close to -3 dB limitation is also achieved. This system integrates the electrical, optical and mechanical degrees of freedom without compromising the exceptional material properties of SiN membranes, and can be a useful platform for studying cavity optoelectromechanics.

Observation of Dynamical Super Efimovian Expansion in a Unitary Fermi Gas

We report an observation of a dynamical super Efimovian expansion in a two-component strongly interacting Fermi gas by engineering time dependent external harmonic trap frequencies. When trap frequency is followed as $[1/4t^2+1/t^2λ\log(t/t_*)]^{1/2}$, where $t_*$ and $λ$ are two control parameters, and the change is faster than a critical value, the expansion of such the quantum gas shows a novel dynamics due to its spatial and dynamical scaling symmetry. A clear double-log periodicity, which is a hallmark of the super Efimov effect, is emergent for the cloud size in the expansion. The universality of such scaling dynamics is verified both in the non-interacting limit and in the unitarity limit. Observing super-Efmovian evolution represents a paradigm in probing universal properties and allows in a new way to study many-body nonequilibrium dynamics with experiments.

Elastocapillary Levelling of Thin Viscous Films on Soft Substrates

A thin liquid film with non-zero curvature at its free surface spontaneously flows to reach a flat configuration, a process driven by Laplace pressure gradients and resisted by the liquid's viscosity. Inspired by recent progresses on the dynamics of liquid droplets on soft substrates, we here study the relaxation of a viscous film supported by an elastic foundation. Experiments involve thin polymer films on elastomeric substrates, where the dynamics of the liquid-air interface is monitored using atomic force microscopy. A theoretical model that describes the coupled evolution of the solid-liquid and the liquid-air interfaces is also provided. In this soft-levelling configuration, Laplace pressure gradients not only drive the flow, but they also induce elastic deformations on the substrate that affect the flow and the shape of the liquid-air interface itself. This process represents an original example of elastocapillarity that is not mediated by the presence of a contact line. We discuss the impact of the elastic contribution on the levelling dynamics and show the departure from the classical self-similarities and power laws observed for capillary levelling on rigid substrates.

Shortcuts to adiabaticity in the strongly-coupled regime: nonadiabatic control of a unitary Fermi gas

Coherent control of complex quantum systems is a fundamental requirement in quantum information processing and engineering. Recently developed notion of shortcut to adiabaticity (STA) has spawned intriguing prospects. So far, the most experimental investigations of STA are implemented in the ideal thermal gas or the weakly interacting ultracold Bose gases. Here we report the first demonstration of a many-body STA in a 3D anisotropically trapped unitary Fermi gas. A new dynamical scaling law is demonstrated on such a strongly interacting quantum gas. By simply engineering the frequency aspect ratio of a harmonic trap, the dynamics of the gas can be manipulated and the many-body state can be transferred adiabatically from one stationary state to another one in short time scale without the excitation. The universal scaling both for non-interacting and unitary Fermi gas is also verified. This could be very important for future many-body quantum engineering and the exploration of the fundamental law of the thermodynamics.

Automaticity of one-relator semigroups with length less than or equal to three

The main results of this paper is to give a complete characterization of the automaticity of one-relator semigroups with length less than or equal to three. Let $S=sgp\langle A|u=v\rangle$ be a semigroup generated by a set $A=\{a_1,a_2,\dots,a_n\},\ n\in \mathbb{N}$ with defining relation $u=v$, where $u,v\in A^*$ and $A^*$ is the free monoid generated by $A$. Such a semigroup is called a one-relator semigroup. Suppose that $|v|\leq|u|\leq3$, where $|u|$ is the length of the word $u$. Suppose that $a,b\in A,\ a\neq b$. Then we have the following: (1) $S$ is prefix-automatic if $u=v\not\in \{aba=ba,\ aab=ba,\ abb=bb\}$. Moreover, if $u=v\in \{aba=ba,\ aab=ba,\ abb=bb\}$ then $S$ is not automatic. (2) $S$ is biautomatic if one of the following holds: (i) $|u|=3,\ |v|=0$, (ii) $|u|=|v|=3$, (iii) $|u|=2$ and $u=v\not\in \{ab=a,\ ab=b\}$. Moreover, if $u=v\in \{ab=a,\ ab=b\}$ then $S$ is not biautomatic.

Observation of the Efimovian Expansion in Scale Invariant Fermi Gases

Scale invariance emerges and plays an important role in strongly correlated many-body systems such as critical regimes nearby phase transitions and the unitary Fermi gases. Discrete scaling symmetry also manifests itself in quantum few-body systems such as the Efimov effect. Here we report both theoretical predication and experimental observation of a novel type expansion dynamics for scale invariant quantum gases. When the frequency of the harmonic trap holding the gas decreases continuously as the inverse of time $t$, surprisingly, the expansion of cloud size exhibits a sequence of plateaus. Remarkably, the locations of these plateaus obey a discrete geometric scaling law with a controllable scale factor and the entire expansion dynamics is governed by a log-periodic function. This striking expansion of quantum Fermi gases shares similar scaling laws and same mathematical description as the Efimov effect. Our work demonstrates the first expansion dynamics of a quantum many-body system with the temporal discrete scaling symmetry, which reveals the underlying spatial continuous scaling symmetry of the many-body system.

All-Optical Production of quantum degeneracy and molecular BEC of $^6$Li

We achieve a highly degenerate and strongly interacting Fermi gas in a mixture of the two lowest hyperfine states of $^6$Li by direct evaporative cooling in a high power crossed optical dipole trap. The trap is loaded from a large atom number magneto-optical trap (MOT) which is realized by a laser system of 2.5-watts intracavity-frequency-doubled light output at 671 nm. With this system, we also demonstrate the production of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (mBEC), and observe the anisotropic expansion of Fermi gases in the so-called BEC-BCS crossover regime.

Strong coupling of an optomechanical system to an anomalously dispersive atomic medium

We investigate a hybrid optomechanical system in which a membrane oscillator is coupled to a collective spin of ground states of an intracavity $Λ$-type three-level atomic medium. The cavity field response is greatly modified by atomic coherence and the anomalous dispersion generated by two Raman pumping beams near two-photon resonance. The optomechanical interaction, therefore radiation pressure force, is substantially enhanced due to superluminal propagation of photons in the cavity. Such improvement facilitates ground-state cooling of the mechanical oscillator with room temperature thermal environment. Moreover, it can greatly improve the sensitivity and bandwidth of displacement measurement. In such system, optically-controlled strong-coupling interaction between the mechanical oscillator and cavity field could be implemented on small intracavity photon number, even at the single quanta level, which is important for weak-light nonlinear photonics and the generation of nonclassical quantum states in the mechanical field.

Precision measurement of transverse velocity distribution of a strontium atomic beam

We measure the transverse velocity distribution in a thermal Sr atomic beam precisely by velocity-selective saturated fluorescence spectroscopy. The use of an ultrastable laser system and the narrow intercombination transition line of Sr atoms mean that the resolution of the measured velocity can reach 0.13 m/s, corresponding to 90$μK$ in energy units. The experimental results are in very good agreement with the results of theoretical calculations. Based on the spectroscopic techniques used here, the absolute frequency of the intercombination transition of $^{88}$Sr is measured using an optical-frequency comb generator referenced to the SI second through an H maser, and is given as 434 829 121 318(10) kHz.

Optical Control of the Scattering Length and Effective Range for Magnetically Tunable Feshbach Resonances in Ultracold Gases

We describe two-field optical techniques to control interactions in Feshbach resonances for two-body scattering in ultra-cold gases. These techniques create a molecular dark state in the closed channel of a magnetically tunable Feshbach resonance, greatly suppressing optical scattering compared to single optical field methods. The dark-state method enables control of the effective range, by creating narrow features that modify the energy dependence of the scattering phase shift, as well as control of the elastic and inelastic parts of the zero-energy s-wave scattering amplitude. We determine the scattering length and the effective range from an effective range expansion, by calculating the momentum-dependent scattering phase shift from the two-body scattering state.

Optical control of Feshbach resonances in Fermi gases using molecular dark states

We propose a general method for optical control of magnetic Feshbach resonances in ultracold atomic gases with more than one molecular state in an energetically closed channel. Using two optical frequencies to couple two states in the closed channel, inelastic loss arising from spontaneous emission is greatly suppressed by destructive quantum interference at the two-photon resonance, i.e., dark-state formation, while the scattering length is widely tunable by varying the frequencies and/or intensities of the optical fields. This technique is of particular interest for a two-component atomic Fermi gas, which is stable near a Feshbach resonance.

Observation of lasing without inversion in a hot rubidium vapor under electromagnetically-induced transparency conditions

We have observed CW lasing without inversion in a gas of hot rubidium atoms in an optical cavity under conditions of electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT). The medium is pumped coherently and resonantly by a single ``coupling'' beam which also produces EIT in the lasing transition. The steady-state intensity exhibits thresholds as a function of the atomic density and the strength of the coupling beam. A theoretical model for an effective three-level lambda system indicates that gain without inversion is possible in this system if the two ground states are coupled by depolarizing collisions, and if the decay branching ratios meet certain conditions.
