Artificial Intelligence without Restriction Surpassing Human Intelligence with Probability One: Theoretical Insight into Secrets of the Brain with AI Twins of the Brain

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has apparently become one of the most important techniques discovered by humans in history while the human brain is widely recognized as one of the most complex systems in the universe. One fundamental critical question which would affect human sustainability remains open: Will artificial intelligence (AI) evolve to surpass human intelligence in the future? This paper shows that in theory new AI twins with fresh cellular level of AI techniques for neuroscience could approximate the brain and its functioning systems (e.g. perception and cognition functions) with any expected small error and AI without restrictions could surpass human intelligence with probability one in the end. This paper indirectly proves the validity of the conjecture made by Frank Rosenblatt 70 years ago about the potential capabilities of AI, especially in the realm of artificial neural networks. Intelligence is just one of fortuitous but sophisticated creations of the nature which has not been fully discovered. Like mathematics and physics, with no restrictions artificial intelligence would lead to a new subject with its self-contained systems and principles. We anticipate that this paper opens new doors for 1) AI twins and other AI techniques to be used in cellular level of efficient neuroscience dynamic analysis, functioning analysis of the brain and brain illness solutions; 2) new worldwide collaborative scheme for interdisciplinary teams concurrently working on and modelling different types of neurons and synapses and different level of functioning subsystems of the brain with AI techniques; 3) development of low energy of AI techniques with the aid of fundamental neuroscience properties; and 4) new controllable, explainable and safe AI techniques with reasoning capabilities of discovering principles in nature.

Generalized Flow Matching for Transition Dynamics Modeling

Simulating transition dynamics between metastable states is a fundamental challenge in dynamical systems and stochastic processes with wide real-world applications in understanding protein folding, chemical reactions and neural activities. However, the computational challenge often lies on sampling exponentially many paths in which only a small fraction ends in the target metastable state due to existence of high energy barriers. To amortize the cost, we propose a data-driven approach to warm-up the simulation by learning nonlinear interpolations from local dynamics. Specifically, we infer a potential energy function from local dynamics data. To find plausible paths between two metastable states, we formulate a generalized flow matching framework that learns a vector field to sample propable paths between the two marginal densities under the learned energy function. Furthermore, we iteratively refine the model by assigning importance weights to the sampled paths and buffering more likely paths for training. We validate the effectiveness of the proposed method to sample probable paths on both synthetic and real-world molecular systems.

Mean Field-based Dynamic Backoff Optimization for MIMO-enabled Grant-Free NOMA in Massive IoT Networks

In the 6G Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm, unprecedented challenges will be raised to provide massive connectivity, ultra-low latency, and energy efficiency for ultra-dense IoT devices. To address these challenges, we explore the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based grant-free random access (GFRA) schemes in the cellular uplink to support massive IoT devices with high spectrum efficiency and low access latency. In particular, we focus on optimizing the backoff strategy of each device when transmitting time-sensitive data samples to a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-enabled base station subject to energy constraints. To cope with the dynamic varied channel and the severe uplink interference due to the uncoordinated grant-free access, we formulate the optimization problem as a multi-user non-cooperative dynamic stochastic game (MUN-DSG). To avoid dimensional disaster as the device number grows large, the optimization problem is transformed into a mean field game (MFG), and its Nash equilibrium can be achieved by solving the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) and Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov (FPK) equations. Thus, a Mean Field-based Dynamic Backoff (MFDB) scheme is proposed as the optimal GFRA solution for each device. Extensive simulation has been fulfilled to compare the proposed MFDB with contemporary random access approaches like access class barring (ACB), slotted-Additive Links On-line Hawaii Area (ALOHA), and minimum backoff (MB) under both static and dynamic channels, and the results proved that MFDB can achieve the least access delay and cumulated cost during multiple transmission frames. Q&A Prompts: Discovering Rich Visual Clues through Mining Question-Answer Prompts for VQA requiring Diverse World Knowledge

With the breakthrough of multi-modal large language models, answering complex visual questions that demand advanced reasoning abilities and world knowledge has become a much more important testbed for developing AI models than ever. However, equipping AI models with robust cross-modality reasoning ability remains challenging since the cognition scheme of humans has not been understood systematically. In this paper, we believe that if we can collect visual clues in the given image as much as possible, we will recognize the image more accurately, understand the question better, recall relevant knowledge more easily, and finally reason out the answer. We discover these rich visual clues by mining question-answer pairs in images and sending them into multi-modal large language models as prompts. We call the proposed method Q&A Prompts. Specifically, we first use the image-answer pairs and the corresponding questions in the training set as inputs and outputs to train a visual question generation model. Then, we use an image tagging model to identify various instances and send packaged image-tag pairs into the visual question generation model to generate relevant questions with the extracted image tags as answers. Finally, we encode these generated question-answer pairs as prompts with a visual-aware prompting module and send them into pre-trained multi-modal large language models to reason out the final answers. Experimental results show that, compared with state-of-the-art methods, our Q&A Prompts achieves substantial improvements on the challenging visual question answering datasets requiring reasoning over diverse world knowledge, such as OK-VQA and A-OKVQA.

An Empirical Study of Refactoring Engine Bugs

Refactoring is a critical process in software development, aiming at improving the internal structure of code while preserving its external behavior. Refactoring engines are integral components of modern Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) and can automate or semi-automate this process to enhance code readability, reduce complexity, and improve the maintainability of software products. Like traditional software systems, refactoring engines can generate incorrect refactored programs, resulting in unexpected behaviors or even crashes. In this paper, we present the first systematic study of refactoring engine bugs by analyzing bugs arising in three popular refactoring engines (i.e., Eclipse, IntelliJ IDEA, and Netbeans). We analyzed these bugs according to their refactoring types, symptoms, root causes, and triggering conditions. We obtained 12 findings and provided a series of valuable guidelines for future work on refactoring bug detection and debugging. Furthermore, our transferability study revealed 130 new bugs in the latest version of those refactoring engines. Among the 21 bugs we submitted, 10 bugs are confirmed by their developers, and seven of them have already been fixed.

Improving Typhoon Predictions by Integrating Data-Driven Machine Learning Models with Physics Models Based on the Spectral Nudging and Data Assimilation

With the rapid development of data-driven machine learning (ML) models in meteorology, typhoon track forecasts have become increasingly accurate. However, current ML models still face challenges, such as underestimating typhoon intensity and lacking interpretability. To address these issues, this study establishes an ML-driven hybrid typhoon model, where forecast fields from the Pangu-Weather model are used to constrain the large-scale forecasts of the Weather Research and Forecasting model based on the spectral nudging method (Pangu_SP). The results show that forecasts from the Pangu_SP experiment obviously outperform those by using the Global Forecast System as the initial field (GFS_INIT) and from the Integrated Forecasting System of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF IFS) for the track forecast of Typhoon Doksuri (2023). The predicted typhoon cloud patterns from Pangu_SP are also more consistent with satellite observations. Additionally, the typhoon intensity forecasts from Pangu_SP are notably more accurate than those from the ECMWF IFS, demonstrating that the hybrid model effectively leverages the strengths of both ML and physical models. Furthermore, this study is the first to explore the significance of data assimilation in ML-driven hybrid dynamical systems. The findings reveal that after assimilating water vapor channels from the Advanced Geostationary Radiation Imager onboard Fengyun-4B, the errors in typhoon intensity forecasts are reduced.

Weakly Supervised Gaussian Contrastive Grounding with Large Multimodal Models for Video Question Answering

Video Question Answering (VideoQA) aims to answer natural language questions based on the information observed in videos. Despite the recent success of Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) in image-language understanding and reasoning, they deal with VideoQA insufficiently, by simply taking uniformly sampled frames as visual inputs, which ignores question-relevant visual clues. Moreover, there are no human annotations for question-critical timestamps in existing VideoQA datasets. In light of this, we propose a novel weakly supervised framework to enforce the LMMs to reason out the answers with question-critical moments as visual inputs. Specifically, we first fuse the question and answer pairs as event descriptions to find multiple keyframes as target moments and pseudo-labels, with the visual-language alignment capability of the CLIP models. With these pseudo-labeled keyframes as additionally weak supervision, we devise a lightweight Gaussian-based Contrastive Grounding (GCG) module. GCG learns multiple Gaussian functions to characterize the temporal structure of the video, and sample question-critical frames as positive moments to be the visual inputs of LMMs. Extensive experiments on several benchmarks verify the effectiveness of our framework, and we achieve substantial improvements compared to previous state-of-the-art methods.

Will Southeast Asia be the next global manufacturing hub? A multiway cointegration, causality, and dynamic connectedness analyses on factors influencing offshore decisions

The COVID-19 pandemic has compelled multinational corporations to diversify their global supply chain risk and to relocate their factories to Southeast Asian countries beyond China. Such recent phenomena provide a good opportunity to understand the factors that influenced offshore decisions in the last two decades. We propose a new conceptual framework based on econometric approaches to examine the relationships between these factors. Firstly, the Vector Auto Regression (VAR) for multi-way cointegration analysis by a Johansen test as well as the embedding Granger causality analysis to examine offshore decisions--innovation, technology readiness, infrastructure, foreign direct investment (FDI), and intermediate imports. Secondly, a Quantile Vector Autoregressive (QVAR) model is used to assess the dynamic connectedness among Southeast Asian countries based on the offshore factors. This study explores a system-wide experiment to evaluate the spillover effects of offshore decisions. It reports a comprehensive analysis using time-series data collected from the World Bank. The results of the cointegration, causality, and dynamic connectedness analyses show that a subset of Southeast Asian countries have spillover effects on each other. These countries present a multi-way cointegration and dynamic connectedness relationship. The study contributes to policymaking by providing a data-driven innovative approach through a new conceptual framework.

A Unified Framework for Integer Programming Formulation of Graph Matching Problems

Graph theory has been a powerful tool in solving difficult and complex problems arising in all disciplines. In particular, graph matching is a classical problem in pattern analysis with enormous applications. Many graph problems have been formulated as a mathematical program and then solved using exact, heuristic, and/or approximated-guaranteed procedures. On the other hand, graph theory has been a powerful tool in visualizing and understanding complex mathematical programming problems, especially integer programs. Formulating a graph problem as a natural integer program (IP) is often a challenging task. However, an IP formulation of the problem has many advantages. Several researchers have noted the need for natural IP formulation of graph theoretic problems. The present study aims to provide a unified framework for IP formulation of graph-matching problems. Although there are many surveys on graph matching problems, none is concerned with IP formulation. This paper is the first to provide a comprehensive IP formulation for such problems. The framework includes a variety of graph optimization problems in the literature. While these problems have been studied by different research communities, however, the framework presented here helps to bring efforts from different disciplines to tackle such diverse and complex problems. We hope the present study can significantly help to simplify some of the difficult problems arising in practice, especially in pattern analysis.

Moving beyond Deletions: Program Simplification via Diverse Program Transformations

To reduce the complexity of software, Developers manually simplify program (known as developer-induced program simplification in this paper) to reduce its code size yet preserving its functionality but manual simplification is time-consuming and error-prone. To reduce manual effort, rule-based approaches (e.g., refactoring) and deletion-based approaches (e.g., delta debugging) can be potentially applied to automate developer-induced program simplification. However, as there is little study on how developers simplify programs in Open-source Software (OSS) projects, it is unclear whether these approaches can be effectively used for developer-induced program simplification. Hence, we present the first study of developer-induced program simplification in OSS projects, focusing on the types of program transformations used, the motivations behind simplifications, and the set of program transformations covered by existing refactoring types. Our study of 382 pull requests from 296 projects reveals that there exist gaps in applying existing approaches for automating developer-induced program simplification. and outlines the criteria for designing automatic program simplification techniques. Inspired by our study and to reduce the manual effort in developer-induced program simplification, we propose SimpT5, a tool that can automatically produce simplified programs (semantically-equivalent programs with reduced source lines of code). SimpT5 is trained based on our collected dataset of 92,485 simplified programs with two heuristics: (1) simplified line localization that encodes lines changed in simplified programs, and (2)checkers that measure the quality of generated programs. Our evaluation shows that SimpT5 are more effective than prior approaches in automating developer-induced program simplification.

Weighted Joint Maximum Mean Discrepancy Enabled Multi-Source-Multi-Target Unsupervised Domain Adaptation Fault Diagnosis

Despite the remarkable results that can be achieved by data-driven intelligent fault diagnosis techniques, they presuppose the same distribution of training and test data as well as sufficient labeled data. Various operating states often exist in practical scenarios, leading to the problem of domain shift that hinders the effectiveness of fault diagnosis. While recent unsupervised domain adaptation methods enable cross-domain fault diagnosis, they struggle to effectively utilize information from multiple source domains and achieve effective diagnosis faults in multiple target domains simultaneously. In this paper, we innovatively proposed a weighted joint maximum mean discrepancy enabled multi-source-multi-target unsupervised domain adaptation (WJMMD-MDA), which realizes domain adaptation under multi-source-multi-target scenarios in the field of fault diagnosis for the first time. The proposed method extracts sufficient information from multiple labeled source domains and achieves domain alignment between source and target domains through an improved weighted distance loss. As a result, domain-invariant and discriminative features between multiple source and target domains are learned with cross-domain fault diagnosis realized. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated in comprehensive comparative experiments on three datasets, and the experimental results demonstrate the superiority of this method.

Sudden death of entanglement with Hamiltonian ensemble assisted by auxiliary qubits

In this paper, we theoretically propose a method to simulate the longitudinal relaxation of a single qubit by coupling it to an auxiliary qubit. In order to mimic the finite-temperature relaxation, we utilize the Hamiltonian-ensemble approach [Kropf, Gneiting, and Buchleitner, Phys. Rev. X 6, 031023 (2016)] and in each realization the auxiliary qubit possesses a random level spacing. The longitudinal relaxation arises as a consequence of the ensemble average and the interaction between the working qubit and the auxiliary qubit. Furthermore, we apply this approach to investigate the influence of the longitudinal relaxation and the transverse relaxation on the entanglement dynamics of two qubits. It is discovered that the sudden death of the entanglement will occur as long as the longitudinal relaxation is present. The transverse relaxation assists the longitudinal relaxation and thus accelerates the finite-time disentanglement.

Channel Modeling for Heterogeneous Vehicular ISAC System with Shared Clusters

In this paper, we consider the channel modeling of a heterogeneous vehicular integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, where a dual-functional multi-antenna base station (BS) intends to communicate with a multi-antenna vehicular receiver (MR) and sense the surrounding environments simultaneously. The time-varying complex channel impulse responses (CIRs) of the sensing and communication channels are derived, respectively, in which the sensing and communication channels are correlated with shared clusters. The proposed models show great generality for the capability in covering both monostatic and bistatic sensing scenarios, and as well for considering both static clusters/targets and mobile clusters/targets. Important channel statistical characteristics, including time-varying spatial cross-correlation function (CCF) and temporal auto-correlation function (ACF), are derived and analyzed. Numerically results are provided to show the propagation characteristics of the proposed ISAC channel model. Finally, the proposed model is validated via the agreement between theoretical and simulated as well as measurement results.

Effects of Disorder On Thouless Pumping In Higher-Order Topological Insulators

We investigate the effects of random onsite disorder on higher-order Thouless pumping of noninteracting fermionic Benalcazar-Bernevig-Hughes (BBH) model. The interplay of disorderinduced topological phase transition and delocalization-localization transition is extensively explored. The higher-order Thouless pumping is characterized by the quantized corner-to-corner charge transport and nonzero Chern number, and the delocalization-localization transition is analyzed by utilizing both inverse participation ratio and energy-level statistics. The results show that the quantized corner-to-corner charge transport is broken in the strong disorder, where the instantaneous bulk energy gap is closed due to effects of disorder. While, although the instantaneous eigenstates are localized, the charge transport remains quantized. This is attributed to delocalized Floquet states caused by the periodic driving. Furthermore, the phase transition from the quantized charge transport to topologically trivial pumping is accompanied by the disorder-induced delocalization-localization transition of Floquet states.

Topological quantum transition driven by charge-phonon coupling in higher-order topological insulators

We investigate a second-order topological quantum transition of a modified Kane-Mele model driven by electron-phonon interaction. The results show that the system parameters of the bare modified Kane-Mele model are renormalized by the electron-phonon interaction. Starting from the second-order topological phase for the bare model, the increasing electron-phonon coupling strength can drive the second-order topological insulator into a semimetal phase. Such a secondorder topological phase transition is characterized by the band-gap closing, discontinuity of averaged ferminoic number and topological invariant.

Automatic Detecting Unethical Behavior in Open-source Software Projects

Given the rapid growth of Open-Source Software (OSS) projects, ethical considerations are becoming more important. Past studies focused on specific ethical issues (e.g., gender bias and fairness in OSS). There is little to no study on the different types of unethical behavior in OSS projects. We present the first study of unethical behavior in OSS projects from the stakeholders' perspective. Our study of 316 GitHub issues provides a taxonomy of 15 types of unethical behavior guided by six ethical principles (e.g., autonomy).Examples of new unethical behavior include soft forking (copying a repository without forking) and self-promotion (promoting a repository without self-identifying as contributor to the repository). We also identify 18 types of software artifacts affected by the unethical behavior. The diverse types of unethical behavior identified in our study (1) call for attentions of developers and researchers when making contributions in GitHub, and (2) point to future research on automated detection of unethical behavior in OSS projects. Based on our study, we propose Etor, an approach that can automatically detect six types of unethical behavior by using ontological engineering and Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL) rules to model GitHub attributes and software artifacts. Our evaluation on 195,621 GitHub issues (1,765 GitHub repositories) shows that Etor can automatically detect 548 unethical behavior with 74.8% average true positive rate. This shows the feasibility of automated detection of unethical behavior in OSS projects.

Human Following Based on Visual Perception in the Context of Warehouse Logistics

Under the background of 5G, Internet, artificial intelligence technol, ogy and robot technology, warehousing, and logistics robot technology has developed rapidly, and products have been widely used. A practical application is to help warehouse personnel pick up or deliver heavy goods at dispersed locations based on dynamic routes. However, programs that can only accept instructions or pre-set by the system do not have more flexibility, but existing human auto-following techniques either cannot accurately identify specific targets or require a combination of lasers and cameras that are cumbersome and do not accomplish obstacle avoidance well. This paper proposed an algorithm that combines DeepSort and a width-based tracking module to track targets and use artificial potential field local path planning to avoid obstacles. The evaluation is performed in a self-designed flat bounded test field and simulated in ROS. Our method achieves the SOTA results on following and successfully reaching the end-point without hitting obstacles.
