Rateless DeepJSCC for Broadcast Channels: a Rate-Distortion-Complexity Tradeoff

In recent years, numerous data-intensive broadcasting applications have emerged at the wireless edge, calling for a flexible tradeoff between distortion, transmission rate, and processing complexity. While deep learning-based joint source-channel coding (DeepJSCC) has been identified as a potential solution to data-intensive communications, most of these schemes are confined to worst-case solutions, lack adaptive complexity, and are inefficient in broadcast settings. To overcome these limitations, this paper introduces nonlinear transform rateless source-channel coding (NTRSCC), a variable-length JSCC framework for broadcast channels based on rateless codes. In particular, we integrate learned source transformations with physical-layer LT codes, develop unequal protection schemes that exploit decoder side information, and devise approximations to enable end-to-end optimization of rateless parameters. Our framework enables heterogeneous receivers to adaptively adjust their received number of rateless symbols and decoding iterations in belief propagation, thereby achieving a controllable tradeoff between distortion, rate, and decoding complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method enhances image broadcast quality under stringent communication and processing budgets over heterogeneous edge devices.

Non-Orthogonal HARQ-CC over SDR: A GNU Radio-Based Implementation

Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) schemes typically allocate all available resources to retransmit failed packets to ensure reliability. However, under stringent delay constraints, these schemes often exhibit low spectral efficiency and increased transmission latency. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an efficient Non-Orthogonal HARQ with Chase Combining (N-HARQ-CC) transmission strategy. Specifically, the proposed approach allocates a larger portion of retransmission resources to new data packets, reserving only a small fraction for retransmitting previously erroneous packets. This is based on the observation that only a small number of information bits are typically incorrect, enabling surplus communication resources to be utilized for transmitting new messages. The N-HARQ-CC scheme retransmits the same redundant version of a failed packet and employs Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) for decoding. To minimize complex packet scheduling and decoding complexity, the proposed scheme limits superposition to at most two messages per transmission round. At the receiver, Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) is used to decouple the superimposed messages. The proposed N-HARQ-CC system was implemented using GNU Radio and USRP platforms for validation. Compared to conventional Type-I HARQ and HARQ-CC schemes, the proposed scheme achieves a significant improvement in spectral efficiency of approximately 0.5 bps/Hz, aligning with the low-latency requirements of 6G networks.

Vehicle as a Service (VaaS): Leverage Vehicles to Build Service Networks and Capabilities for Smart Cities

Smart cities demand resources for rich immersive sensing, ubiquitous communications, powerful computing, large storage, and high intelligence (SCCSI) to support various kinds of applications, such as public safety, connected and autonomous driving, smart and connected health, and smart living. At the same time, it is widely recognized that vehicles such as autonomous cars, equipped with significantly powerful SCCSI capabilities, will become ubiquitous in future smart cities. By observing the convergence of these two trends, this article advocates the use of vehicles to build a cost-effective service network, called the Vehicle as a Service (VaaS) paradigm, where vehicles empowered with SCCSI capability form a web of mobile servers and communicators to provide SCCSI services in smart cities. Towards this direction, we first examine the potential use cases in smart cities and possible upgrades required for the transition from traditional vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) to VaaS. Then, we will introduce the system architecture of the VaaS paradigm and discuss how it can provide SCCSI services in future smart cities, respectively. At last, we identify the open problems of this paradigm and future research directions, including architectural design, service provisioning, incentive design, and security & privacy. We expect that this paper paves the way towards developing a cost-effective and sustainable approach for building smart cities.

Graph Convolutional Network Enabled Power-Constrained HARQ Strategy for URLLC

In this paper, a power-constrained hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) transmission strategy is developed to support ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC). In particular, we aim to minimize the delivery latency of HARQ schemes over time-correlated fading channels, meanwhile ensuring the high reliability and limited power consumption. To ease the optimization, the simple asymptotic outage expressions of HARQ schemes are adopted. Furthermore, by noticing the non-convexity of the latency minimization problem and the intricate connection between different HARQ rounds, the graph convolutional network (GCN) is invoked for the optimal power solution owing to its powerful ability of handling the graph data. The primal-dual learning method is then leveraged to train the GCN weights. Consequently, the numerical results are presented for verification together with the comparisons among three HARQ schemes in terms of the latency and the reliability, where the three HARQ schemes include Type-I HARQ, HARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC), and HARQ with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR). To recapitulate, it is revealed that HARQ-IR offers the lowest latency while guaranteeing the demanded reliability target under a stringent power constraint, albeit at the price of high coding complexity.

Performance Analysis and Optimal Design of HARQ-IR-Aided Terahertz Communications

Terahertz (THz) communications are envisioned to be a promising technology for 6G thanks to its broad bandwidth. However, the large path loss, antenna misalignment, and atmospheric influence of THz communications severely deteriorate its reliability. To address this, hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) is recognized as an effective technique to ensure reliable THz communications. This paper delves into the performance analysis of HARQ with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR)-aided THz communications in the presence/absence of blockage. More specifically, the analytical expression of the outage probability of HARQ-IR-aided THz communications is derived, with which the asymptotic outage analysis is enabled to gain meaningful insights, including diversity order, power allocation gain, modulation and coding gain, etc. Then the long term average throughput (LTAT) is expressed in terms of the outage probability based on renewal theory. Moreover, to combat the blockage effects, a multi-hop HARQ-IR-aided THz communication scheme is proposed and its performance is examined. To demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme, the other two HARQ-aided schemes, i.e., Type-I HARQ and HARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC), are used for benchmarking in the simulations. In addition, a deep neural network (DNN) based outage evaluation framework with low computational complexity is devised to reap the benefits of using both asymptotic and simulation results in low and high outage regimes, respectively. This novel outage evaluation framework is finally employed for the optimal rate selection, which outperforms the asymptotic based optimization.

Inverse Moment Matching Based Analysis of Cooperative HARQ-IR over Time-Correlated Nakagami Fading Channels

This paper analyzes the performance of cooperative hybrid automatic repeat request with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR) and proposes a new approach of outage probability approximation for performance analysis. A general time-correlated Nakagami fading channel covering fast fading and Rayleigh fading as special cases is considered here. An efficient inverse moment matching method is proposed to approximate the outage probability in closed-form. The effect of approximation degree is theoretically analyzed to ease its selection. Moreover, diversity order of cooperative HARQ-IR is analyzed. It is proved that diversity order is irrelevant to the time correlation coefficient $ρ$ as long as $ρ<1$ and full diversity from both spatial and time domains can be achieved by cooperative HARQ-IR under time-correlated fading channels. The accuracy of the analytical results is verified by computer simulations and the results reveal that cooperative HARQ-IR scheme can benefit from high fading order and low channel time correlation. Optimal rate selection to maximize the long term average throughput given a maximum allowable outage probability is finally discussed as one application of the analytical results.

Analysis of HARQ-IR over Time-Correlated Rayleigh Fading Channels

In this paper, performance of hybrid automatic repeat request with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR) over Rayleigh fading channels is investigated. Different from prior analysis, time correlation in the channels is considered. Under time-correlated fading channels, the mutual information in multiple HARQ transmissions is correlated, making the analysis challenging. By using polynomial fitting technique, probability distribution function of the accumulated mutual information is derived. Three meaningful performance metrics including outage probability, average number of transmissions and long term average throughput (LTAT) are then derived in closed-forms. Moreover, diversity order of HARQ-IR is also investigated. It is proved that full diversity can be achieved by HARQ-IR, i.e., the diversity order is equal to the number of transmissions, even under time-correlated fading channels. These analytical results are verified by simulations and enable the evaluation of the impact of various system parameters on the performance. Particularly, the results unveil the negative impact of time correlation on the outage and throughput performance. The results also show that although more transmissions would improve the outage performance, they may not be beneficial to the LTAT when time correlation is high. Optimal rate design to maximize the LTAT is finally discussed and significant LTAT improvement is demonstrated.

Optimizing IoT Energy Efficiency on Edge (EEE): a Cross-layer Design in a Cognitive Mesh Network

Battery-powered wireless IoT devices are now widely seen in many critical applications. Given the limited battery capacity and inaccessibility to external power recharge, optimizing energy efficiency (EE) plays a vital role in prolonging the lifetime of these IoT devices. However, a sheer amount of existing works only focus on the EE design at the infrastructure level such as base stations (BSs) but with little attention to the EE design at the device level. In this paper, we propose a novel idea that aims to shift energy consumption to a grid-powered cognitive radio mesh network thus preserving energy of battery-powered devices. Under this line of thinking, we cast the design into a cross-layer optimization problem with an objective to maximize devices' energy efficiency. To solve this problem, we propose a parametric transformation technique to convert the original problem into a more tractable one. A baseline scheme is used to demonstrate the advantage of our design. We also carry out extensive simulations to exhibit the optimality of our proposed algorithms and the network performance under various settings.

Accurate Angular Inference for 802.11ad Devices Using Beam-Specific Measurements

Due to their sparsity, 60GHz channels are characterized by a few dominant paths. Knowing the angular information of their dominant paths, we can develop various applications, such as the prediction of link performance and the tracking of an 802.11ad device. Although they are equipped with phased arrays, the angular inference for 802.11ad devices is still challenging due to their limited number of RF chains and limited phase control capabilities. Considering the beam sweeping operation and the high communication bandwidth of 802.11ad devices, we propose variation-based angle estimation (VAE), called VAE-CIR, by utilizing beam-specific channel impulse responses (CIRs) measured under different beams and the directional gains of the corresponding beams to infer the angular information of dominant paths. Unlike state-of-the-arts, VAE-CIR exploits the variations between different beam-specific CIRs, instead of their absolute values, for angular inference. To evaluate the performance of VAE-CIR, we generate the beam-specific CIRs by simulating the beam sweeping of 802.11ad devices with the beam patterns measured on off-the-shelf 802.11ad devices. The 60GHz channel is generated via a ray-tracing simulator and the CIRs are extracted via channel estimation based on Golay sequences. Through experiments in various scenarios, we demonstrate the effectiveness of VAE-CIR and its superiority to existing angular inference schemes for 802.11ad devices.

Session-Based Cooperation in Cognitive Radio Networks: A Network-Level Approach

In cognitive radio networks (CRNs), secondary users (SUs) can proactively obtain spectrum access opportunities by helping with primary users' (PUs') data transmissions. Currently, such kind of spectrum access is implemented via a cooperative communications based link-level frame-based cooperative (LLC) approach where individual SUs independently serve as relays for PUs in order to gain spectrum access opportunities. Unfortunately, this LLC approach cannot fully exploit spectrum access opportunities to enhance the throughput of CRNs and fails to motivate PUs to join the spectrum sharing processes. To address these challenges, we propose a network-level session-based cooperative (NLC) approach where SUs are grouped together to cooperate with PUs session by session, instead of frame by frame as what has been done in existing works, for spectrum access opportunities of the corresponding group. Thanks to our group-based session-by-session cooperating strategy, our NLC approach is able to address all those challenges in the LLC approach. To articulate our NLC approach, we further develop an NLC scheme under a cognitive capacity harvesting network (CCHN) architecture. We formulate the cooperative mechanism design as a cross-layer optimization problem with constraints on primary session selection, flow routing and link scheduling. To search for solutions to the optimization problem, we propose an augmented scheduling index ordering based (SIO-based) algorithm to identify maximal independent sets. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed NLC approach and the superiority of the augmented SIO-based algorithm over the traditional method.

Performance Analysis for Heterogeneous Cellular Systems with Range Expansion

Recently heterogeneous base station structure has been adopted in cellular systems to enhance system throughput and coverage. In this paper, the uplink coverage probability for the heterogeneous cellular systems is analyzed and derived in closed-form. The randomness on the locations and number of mobile users is taken into account in the analysis. Based on the analytical results, the impacts of various system parameters on the uplink performance are investigated in detail. The correctness of the analytical results is also verified by simulation results. These analytical results can thus serve as a guidance for system design without the need of time consuming simulations.
