Universal dynamics of a pair condensate

Pair condensates appear in multiple branches of physics, always introducing exotic phenomena. The pair condensate in quantum magnetism is the spin nematic, whose static (quadrupolar) order is difficult to access, favoring dynamical probes. Here, we perform high-resolution neutron spectroscopy to obtain direct evidence for the presence of two spin-nematic phases induced in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Na2BaNi(PO4)2 by controlling the applied magnetic field. By combining precise experiments with quantitative theoretical and numerical analysis, we identify universal dynamics arising from the pair condensate. We show explicitly how the gapless Goldstone mode influences the dispersion and induces Cherenkov-like velocity-selective decay of the gapped single-quasiparticle band. These common spectral features shed new light on spin-nematic dynamics and underline the universal phenomenology shared by pair condensates across different physical systems.

Anomalous Proximitized Transport in Metal/Quantum Magnet Heterostructure $\rm{Bi_{2}Ir_{2}O_{7}/Yb_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$

Fluctuations of quantum spins play a crucial role in the emergence of exotic magnetic phases and excitations. The lack of the charge degree of freedom in insulating quantum magnets, however, precludes such fluctuations from mediating electronic transport. Here we show that the quantum fluctuations of a localized frustrated magnet induce strong proximitized charge transport of the conduction electrons in a synthetic heterostructure comprising an epitaxial $\rm{Bi_{2}Ir_{2}O_{7}}$ ultrathin film on the single crystal of $\rm{Yb_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$. The proximity effects are evidenced by the scaling behavior of the $\rm{Bi_{2}Ir_{2}O_{7}}$ resistance in correspondance with the dynamic scaling of the dynamic spin correlation function of $\rm{Yb_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$, which is a result of quantum fluctuations near a multi-phase quantum critical point. The proximitized transport in $\rm{Bi_{2}Ir_{2}O_{7}}$ can be effectively tuned by magnetic field through suppressing the quantum spin fluctuations as well as inducing transitions via magnetic anisotropy in $\rm{Yb_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}}$. Our work establishes a new pathway for harnessing quantum spin fluctuations in magnetic insulators with electric transport, offering exciting prospects for potential applications in the realm of quantum spintronics.

Field tunable BKT and quantum phase transitions in spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet

Quantum magnetism is one of the most active fields for exploring exotic phases and phase transitions. The recently synthesized Na2BaCo(PO4)2 (NBCP) is an ideal material incarnation of the spin-1/2 easy axis triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF). Experimental evidence shows that NBCP hosts the spin supersolid state with a giant magnetocaloric effect. It was also proposed that the applied magnetic field B can drive the system through Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) and other richer quantum phase transitions. However, the detection of these transitions is challenging because they onset at extremely low temperature T at around 60 mK, and the measurement of the magnetic susceptibility of these transitions requires high sensitivity. With the help of our newly developed gradient force magnetometer in a dilution refrigerator, we constructed the contour diagram of the magnetic susceptibility in the B-T phase diagram in T as cold as 30 mK. These results provide a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of the several field-tunable quantum phase transitions and BKT melting of the spin supersolidity, which are especially significant when their giant magnetocaloric effects highlight potential applications for sub-Kelvin refrigeration under concerns about global helium shortages.

Pressure-Induced Phase Transitions in Bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ exists in two polymorphs: an unconventional structure with alternating layers of single- and triple-layered nickel-oxygen octahedra, and a classical double-layered Ruddlesden-Popper phase. In this study, we report the growth of single crystals of classical double-layered La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ using the floating zone method. Structural characterization under pressures up to 15.4 GPa reveals a gradual transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal symmetry near 12 GPa. Additionally, we present pressure and field-dependent electrical resistance measurements under pressures as high as 27.4 GPa, from which we construct a phase diagram.

Evidence for field induced quantum spin liquid behavior in a spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet

One of the most important issues in modern condensed matter physics is the realization of fractionalized excitations, such as the Majorana excitations in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. To this aim, the 3d-based Kitaev material Na2Co2TeO6 is a promising candidate whose magnetic phase diagram of B // a* contains a field-induced intermediate magnetically disordered phase within 7.5 T < |B| < 10 T. The experimental observations, including the restoration of the crystalline point group symmetry in the angle-dependent torque and the coexisting magnon excitations and spinon-continuum in the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum, provide strong evidence that this disordered phase is a field induced quantum spin liquid with partially polarized spins. Our variational Monte Carlo simulation with the effective K-J1-Γ-Γ'-J3 model reproduces the experimental data and further supports this conclusion.

Magnetic properties of RE2O2CO3 (RE = Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb) with a rare earth-bilayer of triangular lattice

Polycrystalline samples of RE2O2CO3 (RE = Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Yb) with a unique rare-earth bilayer of triangular lattice were synthesized and studied by DC and AC magnetic susceptibility. Data reveals various magnetic ground states including (i) a nonmagnetic ground state for the Pr sample; (ii) long range magnetic ordering for the Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er samples. Besides the Gd sample, they exhibit field-induced spin state transitions. More interestingly, the series spin state transitions in the Nd and Dy samples could be attributed to the field-induced up-up-down (UUD) spin structure. Neutron powder diffraction (NPD) measurements of the Er sample suggest a spiral spin structure below its TN; and (iii) a short-range ordering for the Yb sample. The disrupted inter-layer interaction due to the shift of Yb3+ ions within the bilayer prevents long range magnetic ordering down to 30 mK and makes it another Yb-related triangular lattice antiferromagnet that has the potential to realize a quantum spin liquid state.

Pressure Tuning the Mixture of Eu$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ in Eu$_4$Bi$_6$Se$_{13}$

The investigation of crystallographic, electronic, and magnetic characteristics, especially the mixed valences of Eu$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ under pressure of a novel europium-based bismuth selenide compound, Eu$_4$Bi$_6$Se$_{13}$, presented. This new compound adopts a monoclinic crystal structure classified under the P$2_1$/m space group (#11). It exhibits distinctive structural features, including substantial Eu-Se coordination numbers, Bi-Se ladders, and linear chains of Eu atoms that propagate along the b-axis. Electronic resistivity assessments indicate that Eu$_{4}$Bi$_{6}$Se$_{13}$ exhibits weak metallic behaviors. Magnetic characterization reveals uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, with a notable spin transition at approximately 1.2 T when the magnetic field is oriented along the b-axis. This behavior, coupled with the specific Eu-Eu interatomic distances and the magnetic saturation observed at low fields, supports the identification of metamagnetic properties attributable to the flipping of europium spins. The Curie-Weiss analysis of the magnetic susceptibility measured both perpendicular and parallel to the b-axis and high-pressure partial fluorescence yield (PFY) results detected by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveal the tendency of the material to enter a mixed valent state where the trivalent state becomes more prominent with the pressure increase or temperature decrease.

Out-of-plane magnetic phase diagram of Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate Na2Co2TeO6

We have investigated the magnetic properties and mapped out the phase diagram of the honeycomb magnet Na2Co2TeO6 with Co 3d7 in out-of-plane magnetic fields. This material has previously been proposed to show nearest-neighbor Kitaev interactions between Co spins and maybe even Kitaev quantum spin liquid behavior in high fields. At low magnetic fields, we observe a thermal phase transition at TN = 27 K, transitioning from a paramagnetic state to a canonical ferrimagnetic state. Under the application of magnetic fields, a spin flop-like phase transition occurred before saturation of J = 1/2 between 10 K and TN. Below 10 K, a peak-dip-peak structure emerges between 10 and 17 T in the magnetic susceptibility (dM/dH) before the magnetic saturation, reminiscent of magnetic plateau behavior. The measurement of the magnetocaloric effect also shows dip-peak-dip behavior in this field range. Our data can be explained by an XXZ model with a single ion anisotropy and possibly small Kitaev and Γ exchange interactions. We also unambiguously determined the magnetization saturation field that helps constrain the energy scale of the exchange interactions

Temperature-dependent Structural Evolution of Ruddlesden-Popper Bilayer Nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

A recent $J. Am. Chem. Soc.$ Article (DOI: 10.1021/jacs.3c13094) details a pressure-temperature ($P$-$T$) phase diagram for the Ruddlesden-Popper bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ (LNO-2222) using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. This study identifies a phase transition from $Amam$ (#63) to $Fmmm$ (#69) within the temperature range of 104 K to 120 K under initial pressure and attributes the $I\rm{4/}$$mmm$ (#139) space group to the structure responsible for the superconductivity of LNO-2222. Herein, we examine the temperature-dependent structural evolution of LNO-2222 single crystals at ambient pressure. Contrary to symmetry increase and the established $Amam$-$Fmmm$ phase boundary, we observe an enhancement in the $Cmcm$ reflections as temperature decreases. This work not only establishes a benchmark method for single crystal structure studies of LNO-2222 using laboratory X-rays, but also enhances the understanding of the complex crystallographic behavior of this system, contributing insights to further experimental and theoretical explorations.

Long-Range Structural Order in a Hidden Phase of Ruddlesden-Popper Bilayer Nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

The recent discovery of superconductivity in Ruddlesden-Popper bilayer nickelate, specifically La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$, has generated significant interest in the exploration of high-temperature superconductivity within this material family. In this study, we present the crystallographic and electrical resistivity properties of two distinct Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates: the bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ (referred to as 2222-phase) and a previously uncharacterized phase, La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ (1313-phase). The 2222-phase is characterized by a pseudo $F$-centered orthorhombic lattice, featuring bilayer perovskite [LaNiO$_3$] layers interspaced by rock salt [LaO] layers, forming a repeated ...2222... sequence. Intriguingly, the 1313-phase, which displays semiconducting properties, crystallizes in the $Cmmm$ space group and exhibits a pronounced predilection for a $C$-centered orthorhombic lattice. Within this structure, the perovskite [LaNiO$_3$] layers exhibit a distinctive long-range ordered arrangement, alternating between single- and trilayer configurations, resulting in a ...1313... sequence. This report contributes to novel insights into the crystallography and the structure-property relationship of Ruddlesden-Popper nickelates, paving the way for further investigations into their unique physical properties.

Comparative Raman Scattering Study of Crystal Field Excitations in Co-based Quantum Magnets

Co-based materials have recently been explored due to potential to realise complex bond-dependent anisotropic magnetism. Prominent examples include Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$, Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$, and CoX$_2$ (X = Cl, Br, I). In order to provide insight into the magnetic interactions in these compounds, we make a comparative analysis of their local crystal electric field excitations spectra via Raman scattering measurements. Combining these measurements with theoretical analysis confirms the validity of $j_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ single-ion ground states for all compounds, and provides accurate experimental estimates of the local crystal distortions, which play a prominent role in the magnetic couplings between spin-orbital coupled Co moments.

Local distortion driven magnetic phase switching in pyrochlore $Yb_2(Ti_{1-x}Sn_x)_2O_7$

While it is commonly accepted that the disorder induced by magnetic ion doping in quantum magnets usually generates a rugged free-energy landscape resulting in slow or glassy spin dynamics, the disorder/distortion effects associated with non-magnetic ion sites doping are still illusive. Here, using AC susceptibility measurements, we show that the mixture of Sn/Ti on the non-magnetic ion sites of pyrochlore $Yb_2(Ti_{1-x}Sn_x)_2O_7$ induces an antiferromagnetic ground state despite both parent compounds, $Yb_2Ti_2O_7$, and $Yb_2Sn_2O_7$, order ferromagnetically. Local structure studies through neutron total scattering reveals the local distortion in the non-magnetic ion sites and its strong correlation with the magnetic phase switching. Our study, for the first time, demonstrates the local distortion as induced by the non-magnetic ion site mixture could be a new path to achieve magnetic phase switching, which has been traditionally obtained by external stimuli such as temperature, magnetic field, pressure, strain, light, etc.

Static magnetic order with strong quantum fluctuations in spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet Na2Co2TeO6

Kitaev interactions, arising from the interplay of frustration and bond anisotropy, can lead to strong quantum fluctuations and, in an ideal case, to a quantum-spin-liquid state. However, in many nonideal materials, spurious non-Kitaev interactions typically promote a zigzag antiferromagnetic order in the d-orbital transition metal compounds. By combining neutron scattering with muon-spin rotation and relaxation techniques, we provide new insights into the exotic properties of Na2Co2TeO6, a candidate Kitaev material. Below TN, the zero-field muon-spin relaxation rate becomes almost constant (at 0.45 us-1). We attribute this temperature-independent muon-spin relaxation rate to the strong quantum fluctuations, as well as to the frustrated Kitaev interactions. As the magnetic field increases, neutron scattering data indicate a much broader spin-wave-excitation gap at the K-point. Therefore, quantum fluctuations seem not only robust, but are even enhanced by the applied magnetic field. Our findings provide valuable hints for understanding the onset of the quantum-spin-liquid state in Kitaev materials.

Revisiting spin ice physics in the ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlore Pr$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$

Pyrochlore materials are characterized by their hallmark network of corner-sharing rare-earth tetrahedra, which can produce a wide array of complex magnetic ground states. Ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlores often obey the "two-in-two-out" spin ice rules, which can lead to a highly-degenerate spin structure. Large moment systems, such as Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, tend to host a classical spin ice state with low-temperature spin freezing and emergent magnetic monopoles. Systems with smaller effective moments, such as Pr$^{3+}$-based pyrochlores, have been proposed as excellent candidates for hosting a "quantum spin ice" characterized by entanglement and a slew of exotic quasiparticle excitations. However, experimental evidence for a quantum spin ice state has remained elusive. Here, we show that the low-temperature magnetic properties of Pr$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ satisfy several important criteria for continued consideration as a quantum spin ice. We find that Pr$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ exhibits a partially spin-frozen ground state with a large volume fraction of dynamic magnetism. Our comprehensive bulk characterization and neutron scattering measurements enable us to map out the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram, producing results consistent with expectations for a ferromagnetic Ising pyrochlore. We identify key hallmarks of spin ice physics, and show that the application of small magnetic fields ($μ_0 H_c \sim$0.75T) suppresses the spin ice state and induces a long-range ordered magnetic structure. Together, our work clarifies the current state of Pr$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ and encourages future studies aimed at exploring the potential for a quantum spin ice ground state in this system.

Non-linear magnons and exchange Hamiltonians of delafossite proximate quantum spin liquids

Quantum spin liquids (QSL) are theoretical states of matter with long-range entanglement and exotic quasiparticles. However, they generally elude quantitative theory, rendering their underlying phases mysterious and hampering efforts to identify experimental QSL states. Here we study triangular lattice resonating valence bond QSL candidate materials KYbSe$_2$ and NaYbSe$_2$. We measure the magnon modes in their 1/3 plateau phase, where quantitative theory is tractable, using inelastic neutron scattering and fit them using nonlinear spin wave theory. We also fit the KYbSe$_2$ heat capacity using high temperature series expansion. Both KYbSe$_2$ fits yield the same magnetic Hamiltonian to within uncertainty, confirming previous estimates and showing the Heisenberg $J_2/J_1$ to be an accurate model for these materials. Most importantly, comparing KYbSe$_2$ and NaYbSe$_2$ shows that smaller $A$-site Na$^+$ ion has a larger $J_2/J_1$ ratio. However, hydrostatic pressure applied to KYbSe$_2$ increases the ordering temperature (a result consistent with density functional theory calculations), indicating that pressure decreases $J_2/J_1$. These results show how periodic table and hydrostatic pressure can tune the $A$YbSe$_2$ materials in a controlled way.

Static and dynamical properties of the spin-5/2 nearly ideal triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba3MnSb2O9

We study the ground state and spin excitations in Ba3MnSb2O9, an easy-plane S = 5/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet. By combining single-crystal neutron scattering, electric spin resonance (ESR), and spin wave calculations, we determine the frustrated quasi-two-dimensional spin Hamiltonian parameters describing the material. While the material has a slight monoclinic structural distortion, which could allow for isosceles-triangular exchanges and biaxial anisotropy by symmetry, we observe no deviation from the behavior expected for spin waves in the in-plane 120o state. Even the easy-plane anisotropy is so small that it can only be detected by ESR in our study. In conjunction with the quasi-two-dimensionality, our study establishes that Ba3MnSb2O9 is a nearly ideal triangular lattice antiferromagnet with the quasi-classical spin S = 5/2, which suggests that it has the potential for an experimental study of Z- or Z2-vortex excitations.

Revealing temperature evolution of the Dirac band in ZrTe$_5$ via magneto-infrared spectroscopy

We report the temperature evolution of the Dirac band in semiconducting zirconium pentatelluride (ZrTe$_5$) using magneto-infrared spectroscopy. We find that the band gap is temperature independent at low temperatures and increases with temperature at elevated temperatures. Although such an observation seems to support a weak topological insulator phase at all temperatures and defy the previously reported topological phase transition (TPT) at an intermediate temperature in ZrTe$_5$, we show that it is also possible to explain the observation by considering the effect of conduction-valence band mixing and band inversion with a strong topological insulator phase at low temperatures. Our work provides an alternative picture of the band gap evolution across TPT.

Spinon continuum in the Heisenberg quantum chain compound Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$

Magnetic excitations in the spin chain candidate Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. A spinon continuum with a bandwidth of $\sim22$ meV is observed along the chain formed by alternating magnetic V$^{4+}$ and nonmagnetic V$^{5+}$ ions. Incipient magnetic Bragg peaks due to weak ferromagnetic interchain couplings emerge when approaching the magnetic transition at $T_N\sim 5.3$ K while the excitations remain gapless within the instrumental resolution. Comparisons to the Bethe ansatz, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, and effective field theories confirm Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ as a host of weakly coupled $S = 1/2$ chains dominated by antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions of $\sim7.1$(1) meV.
