Three-Layered Atmospheric Structure in Accretion Disks Around Stellar-Mass Black Holes

Modeling of the x-ray spectra of the Galactic superluminal jet sources GRS 1915+105 and GRO J1655-40 reveal a three-layered atmospheric structure in the inner region of their accretion disks. Above the cold and optically thick disk of a temperature 0.2-0.5 keV, there is a warm layer with a temperature of 1.0-1.5 keV and an optical depth around 10. Sometimes there is also a much hotter, optically thin corona above the warm layer, with a temperature of 100 keV or higher and an optical depth around unity. The structural similarity between the accretion disks and the solar atmosphere suggest that similar physical processes may be operating in these different systems.

X-ray Measurements of the Gravitational Potential Profile in the Central Region of the Abell 1060 Cluster of Galaxies

X-ray spectral and imaging data from ASCA and ROSAT were used to measure the total mass profile in the central region of Abell 1060, a nearby and relatively poor cluster of galaxies. The ASCA X-ray spectra, after correcting for the spatial response of the X-ray telescope, show an isothermal distribution of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) within at least $\sim$ 12' (or $160h_{70}^{-1}$ kpc; $H_0 = 70 h_{70}$ km s$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$) in radius of the cluster center. The azimuthally averaged surface brightness profile from the ROSAT PSPC exhibits a central excess above an isothermal $β$ model. The ring-sorted ASCA GIS spectra and the radial surface brightness distribution from the ROSAT PSPC were simultaneously utilized to constrain the gravitational potential profile. Some analytic models of the total mass density profile were examined. The ICM density profile was also specified by analytic forms. The ICM temperature distribution was constrained to satisfy the hydrostatic equilibrium, and to be consistent with the data. Then, the total mass distribution was found to be described better by the universal dark halo profile proposed by Navarro, Frenk, and White (1996;1997) than by a King-type model with a flat density core. A profile with a central cusp together with a logarithmic radial slope of $\sim 1.5$ was also consistent with the data. Discussions are made concerning the estimated dark matter distribution around the cluster center.

Two-Phased Intra-Cluster Medium in the Centaurus Cluster of Galaxies

ASCA and ROSAT data of the Centaurus cluster were analyzed. A central excess in the radial brightness profile is found in the hard energy band up to 10keV. This requires a deeper central potential than a King-type one. A double-beta brightness distribution gives a good account of the data. A deprojected energy spectrum within a spherical region of radius 30 kpc at the cluster center indicates that the ICM cannot be isothermal there. Simultaneous fitting of the three (PSPC, GIS, and SIS) energy spectra extracted from the central 3' region showed that a two-temperature model that has temperatures of 1.4keV and 4.4keV and a common metallicity of 1.0 solar with the Galactic absorption gives the best description to the spectra. A cooling-flow spectral model did not give satisfactory fit. A 3-dimensional cluster model incorporating the two-phase picture, the double-beta brightness distribution, and the central metallicity increase reproduced the overall ASCA and ROSAT data successfully. The derived spatial distribution of the dark matter deviates from a King-type profile exhibiting a central excess, which is consistent with the Navvaro-Frenk-White model. The iron is revealed to be more widely spread than stars, which may have been caused by energetic supernovae and the motion of the cD galaxy. Since the derived characteristics of the cool phase including the temperature, angular extent, gas mass, and metallicity, are on a smooth extension of those of inter-stellar medium (ISM) of elliptical galaxies, the cool phase can be regarded as the ISM associated with the cD galaxy. The cool-phase X-ray emission is presumably sustained by energies dissipated by infalling mass to the cD galaxy in the course of cluster evolution.

ASCA Measurements of Silicon and Iron Abundances in the Intracluster Medium

We analyzed the ASCA X-ray data of 40 nearby clusters of galaxies, whose intracluster-medium temperature distributes in the range of 0.9--10 keV. We measured the Si and Fe abundances of the intracluster medium, spatially averaging over each cluster, but excluding the central $\sim 0.15 h_{50}^{-1}$ Mpc region in order to avoid any possible abundance gradients and complex temperature structures. The Fe abundances of these clusters are 0.2--0.3 solar, with only weak dependence on the temperature of the intracluster medium, hence on the cluster richness. In contrast, the Si abundance is observed to increase from 0.3 to 0.6--0.7 solar from the poorer to richer clusters. These results suggest that the supernovae of both type-Ia and type-II significantly contribute to the metal enrichment of the intracluster medium, with the relative contribution of type-II supernovae increasing towards richer clusters. We suggest a possibility that a considerable fraction of type-II supernova products escaped from poorer systems.
