Fine-Tuning and Deploying Large Language Models Over Edges: Issues and Approaches

Since the release of GPT2-1.5B in 2019, the large language models (LLMs) have evolved from specialized deep models to versatile foundation models. While demonstrating remarkable zero-shot ability, the LLMs still require fine-tuning on local datasets and substantial memory for deployment over the network edges. Traditional first-order fine-tuning techniques require significant GPU memory that exceeds the capacity of mainstream hardware. Besides, the LLMs have been expanded beyond text generation to create images, audio, video, and multi-modal content, necessitating careful investigation of efficient deployment strategies for large-scale foundation models. In response to these challenges, model fine-tuning and model-compression techniques have been developed to support the sustainable growth of LLMs by reducing both operational and capital expenditures. In this work, we provide a comprehensive overview of prevalent memory-efficient fine-tuning methods for deployment at the network edge. We also review state-of-the-art literature on model compression, offering insights into the deployment of LLMs at network edges.

Less Signals, More Understanding: Channel-Capacity Codebook Design for Digital Task-Oriented Semantic Communication

Discrete representation has emerged as a powerful tool in task-oriented semantic communication (ToSC), offering compact, interpretable, and efficient representations well-suited for low-power edge intelligence scenarios. Its inherent digital nature aligns seamlessly with hardware-friendly deployment and robust storage/transmission protocols. However, despite its strengths, current ToSC frameworks often decouple semantic-aware discrete mapping from the underlying channel characteristics and task demands. This mismatch leads to suboptimal communication performance, degraded task utility, and limited generalization under variable wireless conditions. Moreover, conventional designs frequently overlook channel-awareness in codebook construction, restricting the effectiveness of semantic symbol selection under constrained resources. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a channel-aware discrete semantic coding framework tailored for low-power edge networks. Leveraging a Wasserstein-regularized objective, our approach aligns discrete code activations with optimal input distributions, thereby improving semantic fidelity, robustness, and task accuracy. Extensive experiments on the inference tasks across diverse signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes show that our method achieves notable gains in accuracy and communication efficiency. This work provides new insights into integrating discrete semantics and channel optimization, paving the way for the widespread adoption of semantic communication in future digital infrastructures.

Model Splitting Enhanced Communication-Efficient Federated Learning for CSI Feedback

Recent advancements have introduced federated machine learning-based channel state information (CSI) compression before the user equipments (UEs) upload the downlink CSI to the base transceiver station (BTS). However, most existing algorithms impose a high communication overhead due to frequent parameter exchanges between UEs and BTS. In this work, we propose a model splitting approach with a shared model at the BTS and multiple local models at the UEs to reduce communication overhead. Moreover, we implant a pipeline module at the BTS to reduce training time. By limiting exchanges of boundary parameters during forward and backward passes, our algorithm can significantly reduce the exchanged parameters over the benchmarks during federated CSI feedback training.

Power Minimization for NOMA-assisted Pinching Antenna Systems With Multiple Waveguides

The integration of pinching antenna systems with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has emerged as a promising technique for future 6G applications. This paper is the first to investigate power minimization for NOMA-assisted pinching antenna systems utilizing multiple dielectric waveguides. We formulate a total power minimization problem constrained by each user's minimum data requirements, addressing a classical challenge. To efficiently solve the non-convex optimization problem, we propose an iterative algorithm. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the interference function of this algorithm is standard, ensuring convergence to a unique fixed point. Numerical simulations validate that our developed algorithm converges within a few steps and significantly outperforms benchmark strategies across various data rate requirements. The results also indicate that the minimum transmit power, as a function of the interval between the waveguides, exhibits an approximately oscillatory decay with a negative trend.

Joint Antenna Position and Transmit Power Optimization for Pinching Antenna-Assisted ISAC Systems

This letter explores how pinching antennas, an advanced flexible-antenna system, can enhance the performance of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems by leveraging their adaptability, cost-effectiveness, and ability to facilitate line-of-sight transmission. To achieve this, a joint antenna positioning and transmit power optimization problem is formulated to maximize the total communication data rate while meeting the target sensing requirements and the system energy constraint. To address the complex non-convex optimization problem, we propose a maximum entropy-based reinforcement learning (MERL) solution. By maximizing cumulative reward and policy entropy, this approach effectively balances exploration and exploitation to enhance robustness. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed MERL algorithm surpasses other benchmark schemes in cumulative reward, total data rate, sensing signal-to-noise ratio, and stability.

Integrated Sensing and Communication for 6G Holographic Digital Twins

With the advent of 6G networks, offering ultra-high bandwidth and ultra-low latency, coupled with the enhancement of terminal device resolutions, holographic communication is gradually becoming a reality. Holographic digital twin (HDT) is considered one of key applications of holographic communication, capable of creating virtual replicas for real-time mapping and prediction of physical entity states, and performing three-dimensional reproduction of spatial information. In this context, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is expected to be a crucial pathway for providing data sources to HDT. This paper proposes a four-layer architecture assisted by ISAC for HDT, integrating emerging paradigms and key technologies to achieve low-cost, high-precision environmental data collection for constructing HDT. Specifically, to enhance sensing resolution, we explore super-resolution techniques from the perspectives of parameter estimation and point cloud construction. Additionally, we focus on multi-point collaborative sensing for constructing HDT, and provide a comprehensive review of four key techniques: node selection, multi-band collaboration, cooperative beamforming, and data fusion. Finally, we highlight several interesting research directions to guide and inspire future work.

The MoE-Empowered Edge LLMs Deployment: Architecture, Challenges, and Opportunities

The powerfulness of LLMs indicates that deploying various LLMs with different scales and architectures on end, edge, and cloud to satisfy different requirements and adaptive heterogeneous hardware is the critical way to achieve ubiquitous intelligence for 6G. However, the massive parameter scale of LLMs poses significant challenges in deploying them on edge devices due to high computational and storage demands. Considering that the sparse activation in Mixture of Experts (MoE) is effective on scalable and dynamic allocation of computational and communications resources at the edge, this paper proposes a novel MoE-empowered collaborative deployment framework for edge LLMs, denoted as CoEL. This framework fully leverages the properties of MoE architecture and encompasses four key aspects: Perception, Deployment, Compression, and Updating. Edge servers broadcast their resource status and the specific resource requirements of LLMs to their neighbors. Then, utilizing this data, two sophisticated deployment strategies are proposed for satisfying varying model scales, ensuring that each model is deployed effectively. One for deploying LLMs on a single edge device through intra-device resource collaboration, and another for a distributed deployment across multiple edge devices via inter-device resource collaboration. Furthermore, both the models and the intermediate data are compressed for reducing memory footprint by quantization and reducing the volume of intermediate data by token fusion and pruning. Finally, given the dynamic of network topology, resource status, and user requirements, the deployment strategies are regularly updated to maintain its relevance and effectiveness. This paper also delineates the challenges and potential research directions for the deployment of edge LLMs.

COutfitGAN: Learning to Synthesize Compatible Outfits Supervised by Silhouette Masks and Fashion Styles

How to recommend outfits has gained considerable attention in both academia and industry in recent years. Many studies have been carried out regarding fashion compatibility learning, to determine whether the fashion items in an outfit are compatible or not. These methods mainly focus on evaluating the compatibility of existing outfits and rarely consider applying such knowledge to 'design' new fashion items. We propose the new task of generating complementary and compatible fashion items based on an arbitrary number of given fashion items. In particular, given some fashion items that can make up an outfit, the aim of this paper is to synthesize photo-realistic images of other, complementary, fashion items that are compatible with the given ones. To achieve this, we propose an outfit generation framework, referred to as COutfitGAN, which includes a pyramid style extractor, an outfit generator, a UNet-based real/fake discriminator, and a collocation discriminator. To train and evaluate this framework, we collected a large-scale fashion outfit dataset with over 200K outfits and 800K fashion items from the Internet. Extensive experiments show that COutfitGAN outperforms other baselines in terms of similarity, authenticity, and compatibility measurements.

Overview of EXL-50 Research Progress and Future Plan

XuanLong-50 (EXL-50) is the first medium-size spherical torus (ST) in China, with the toroidal field at major radius at 50 cm around 0.5T. CS-free and non-inductive current drive via electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) was the main physics research issue for EXL-50. Discharges with plasma currents of 50 kA - 180 kA were routinely obtained in EXL-50, with the current flattop sustained for up to or beyond 2 s. The current drive effectiveness on EXL-50 was as high as 1 A/W for low-density discharges using 28GHz ECRH alone for heating power less than 200 kW. The plasma current reached Ip>80 kA for high-density (5*10e18m-2) discharges with 150 kW 28GHz ECRH. Higher performance discharge (Ip of about 120 kA and core density of about 1*10e19m-3) was achieved with 150 kW 50GHz ECRH. The plasma current in EXL-50 was mainly carried by the energetic electrons.Multi-fluid equilibrium model has been successfully applied to reconstruct the magnetic flux surface and the measured plasma parameters of the EXL-50 equilibrium. The physics mechanisms for the solenoid-free ECRH current drive and the energetic electrons has also been investigated. Preliminary experimental results show that 100 kW of lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) waves can drive 20 kA of plasma current. Several boron injection systems were installed and tested in EXL-50, including B2H6 gas puffing, boron powder injection, boron pellet injection. The research plan of EXL-50U, which is the upgrade machine of EXL-50, is also presented.

Learning to Synthesize Compatible Fashion Items Using Semantic Alignment and Collocation Classification: An Outfit Generation Framework

The field of fashion compatibility learning has attracted great attention from both the academic and industrial communities in recent years. Many studies have been carried out for fashion compatibility prediction, collocated outfit recommendation, artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled compatible fashion design, and related topics. In particular, AI-enabled compatible fashion design can be used to synthesize compatible fashion items or outfits in order to improve the design experience for designers or the efficacy of recommendations for customers. However, previous generative models for collocated fashion synthesis have generally focused on the image-to-image translation between fashion items of upper and lower clothing. In this paper, we propose a novel outfit generation framework, i.e., OutfitGAN, with the aim of synthesizing a set of complementary items to compose an entire outfit, given one extant fashion item and reference masks of target synthesized items. OutfitGAN includes a semantic alignment module, which is responsible for characterizing the mapping correspondence between the existing fashion items and the synthesized ones, to improve the quality of the synthesized images, and a collocation classification module, which is used to improve the compatibility of a synthesized outfit. In order to evaluate the performance of our proposed models, we built a large-scale dataset consisting of 20,000 fashion outfits. Extensive experimental results on this dataset show that our OutfitGAN can synthesize photo-realistic outfits and outperform state-of-the-art methods in terms of similarity, authenticity and compatibility measurements.

BC-GAN: A Generative Adversarial Network for Synthesizing a Batch of Collocated Clothing

Collocated clothing synthesis using generative networks has become an emerging topic in the field of fashion intelligence, as it has significant potential economic value to increase revenue in the fashion industry. In previous studies, several works have attempted to synthesize visually-collocated clothing based on a given clothing item using generative adversarial networks (GANs) with promising results. These works, however, can only accomplish the synthesis of one collocated clothing item each time. Nevertheless, users may require different clothing items to meet their multiple choices due to their personal tastes and different dressing scenarios. To address this limitation, we introduce a novel batch clothing generation framework, named BC-GAN, which is able to synthesize multiple visually-collocated clothing images simultaneously. In particular, to further improve the fashion compatibility of synthetic results, BC-GAN proposes a new fashion compatibility discriminator in a contrastive learning perspective by fully exploiting the collocation relationship among all clothing items. Our model was examined in a large-scale dataset with compatible outfits constructed by ourselves. Extensive experiment results confirmed the effectiveness of our proposed BC-GAN in comparison to state-of-the-art methods in terms of diversity, visual authenticity, and fashion compatibility.

FCBoost-Net: A Generative Network for Synthesizing Multiple Collocated Outfits via Fashion Compatibility Boosting

Outfit generation is a challenging task in the field of fashion technology, in which the aim is to create a collocated set of fashion items that complement a given set of items. Previous studies in this area have been limited to generating a unique set of fashion items based on a given set of items, without providing additional options to users. This lack of a diverse range of choices necessitates the development of a more versatile framework. However, when the task of generating collocated and diversified outfits is approached with multimodal image-to-image translation methods, it poses a challenging problem in terms of non-aligned image translation, which is hard to address with existing methods. In this research, we present FCBoost-Net, a new framework for outfit generation that leverages the power of pre-trained generative models to produce multiple collocated and diversified outfits. Initially, FCBoost-Net randomly synthesizes multiple sets of fashion items, and the compatibility of the synthesized sets is then improved in several rounds using a novel fashion compatibility booster. This approach was inspired by boosting algorithms and allows the performance to be gradually improved in multiple steps. Empirical evidence indicates that the proposed strategy can improve the fashion compatibility of randomly synthesized fashion items as well as maintain their diversity. Extensive experiments confirm the effectiveness of our proposed framework with respect to visual authenticity, diversity, and fashion compatibility.

Resource Allocation Driven by Large Models in Future Semantic-Aware Networks

Large model has emerged as a key enabler for the popularity of future networked intelligent applications. However, the surge of data traffic brought by intelligent applications puts pressure on the resource utilization and energy consumption of the future networks. With efficient content understanding capabilities, semantic communication holds significant potential for reducing data transmission in intelligent applications. In this article, resource allocation driven by large models in semantic-aware networks is investigated. Specifically, a semantic-aware communication network architecture based on scene graph models and multimodal pre-trained models is designed to achieve efficient data transmission. On the basis of the proposed network architecture, an intelligent resource allocation scheme in semantic-aware network is proposed to further enhance resource utilization efficiency. In the resource allocation scheme, the semantic transmission quality is adopted as an evaluation metric and the impact of wireless channel fading on semantic transmission is analyzed. To maximize the semantic transmission quality for multiple users, a diffusion model-based decision-making scheme is designed to address the power allocation problem in semantic-aware networks. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed large-model-driven network architecture and resource allocation scheme achieve high-quality semantic transmission.

Towards Intelligent Design: A Self-driven Framework for Collocated Clothing Synthesis Leveraging Fashion Styles and Textures

Collocated clothing synthesis (CCS) has emerged as a pivotal topic in fashion technology, primarily concerned with the generation of a clothing item that harmoniously matches a given item. However, previous investigations have relied on using paired outfits, such as a pair of matching upper and lower clothing, to train a generative model for achieving this task. This reliance on the expertise of fashion professionals in the construction of such paired outfits has engendered a laborious and time-intensive process. In this paper, we introduce a new self-driven framework, named style- and texture-guided generative network (ST-Net), to synthesize collocated clothing without the necessity for paired outfits, leveraging self-supervised learning. ST-Net is designed to extrapolate fashion compatibility rules from the style and texture attributes of clothing, using a generative adversarial network. To facilitate the training and evaluation of our model, we have constructed a large-scale dataset specifically tailored for unsupervised CCS. Extensive experiments substantiate that our proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines in terms of both visual authenticity and fashion compatibility.

Joint Source-Channel Optimization for UAV Video Coding and Transmission

This paper is concerned with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) video coding and transmission in scenarios such as emergency rescue and environmental monitoring. Unlike existing methods of modeling UAV video source coding and channel transmission separately, we investigate the joint source-channel optimization issue for video coding and transmission. Particularly, we design eight-dimensional delay-power-rate-distortion models in terms of source coding and channel transmission and characterize the correlation between video coding and transmission, with which a joint source-channel optimization problem is formulated. Its objective is to minimize end-to-end distortion and UAV power consumption by optimizing fine-grained parameters related to UAV video coding and transmission. This problem is confirmed to be a challenging sequential-decision and non-convex optimization problem. We therefore decompose it into a family of repeated optimization problems by Lyapunov optimization and design an approximate convex optimization scheme with provable performance guarantees to tackle these problems. Based on the theoretical transformation, we propose a Lyapunov repeated iteration (LyaRI) algorithm. Both objective and subjective experiments are conducted to comprehensively evaluate the performance of LyaRI. The results indicate that, compared to its counterparts, LyaRI achieves better video quality and stability performance, with a 47.74% reduction in the variance of the obtained encoding bitrate.

Heavy-Ball Momentum Accelerated Actor-Critic With Function Approximation

By using an parametric value function to replace the Monte-Carlo rollouts for value estimation, the actor-critic (AC) algorithms can reduce the variance of stochastic policy gradient so that to improve the convergence rate. While existing works mainly focus on analyzing convergence rate of AC algorithms under Markovian noise, the impacts of momentum on AC algorithms remain largely unexplored. In this work, we first propose a heavy-ball momentum based advantage actor-critic (\mbox{HB-A2C}) algorithm by integrating the heavy-ball momentum into the critic recursion that is parameterized by a linear function. When the sample trajectory follows a Markov decision process, we quantitatively certify the acceleration capability of the proposed HB-A2C algorithm. Our theoretical results demonstrate that the proposed HB-A2C finds an $ε$-approximate stationary point with $\oo{ε^{-2}}$ iterations for reinforcement learning tasks with Markovian noise. Moreover, we also reveal the dependence of learning rates on the length of the sample trajectory. By carefully selecting the momentum factor of the critic recursion, the proposed HB-A2C can balance the errors introduced by the initialization and the stoschastic approximation.

Electrically tunable high-Chern-number quasiflat bands in twisted antiferromagnetic topological insulators

Isolated flat bands with significantly quenched kinetic energy of electrons could give rise to exotic strongly correlated states from electron-electron interactions. More intriguingly, the interplay between topology and flat bands can further lead to richer physical phenomena, which have attracted much interest. Here, taking advantage of the recently proposed intertwined Dirac states induced from the anisotropic coupling between the top and bottom surface states of an antiferromagnetic topological insulator thin film, we show the emergence of a high-Chern-number (quasi)flat-band state through moiré engineering of the surface states. Remarkably, the flat bands are isolated from other bands and located near the Fermi level. Furthermore, topological phase transitions between trivial and nontrivial flat-band states can be driven by tuning the out-of-plane electric field. Our work not only proposes a new scheme to realize high-Chern-number flat-band states, but also highlights the versatility of the intertwined Dirac-cone states.

Pilot-Aided Joint Time Synchronization and Channel Estimation for OTFS

This letter proposes a pilot-aided joint time synchronization and channel estimation (JTSCE) algorithm for orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) systems. Unlike existing algorithms, JTSCE employs a maximum length sequence (MLS) rather than an isolated signal as the pilot. Distinctively, JTSCE explores MLS's autocorrelation properties to estimate timing offset and channel delay taps. After obtaining delay taps, closed-form expressions of Doppler and channel gain for each propagation path are derived. Simulation results indicate that, compared to its counterpart, JTSCE achieves better bit error rate performance, close to that with perfect time synchronization and channel state information.
