Reflexive modules, self-dual modules and Arf rings

We prove a tight connection between reflexive modules over a one-dimensional ring $R$ and its birational extensions that are self-dual as $R$-modules. Consequently, we show that a complete local reduced Arf ring has finitely many indecomposable reflexive modules up to isomorphism, which can be represented precisely by the local rings infinitely near it. We also characterize Arf rings by the property that any reflexive module is self-dual. We give applications on dimension of subcategories and existence of endomorphism rings of small global dimension (non-commutative desingularizations). Our results indicate striking similarities between Arf rings in dimension one and rational singularities in dimension two from representation-theoretic and categorical perspectives.

Trace of canonical modules, annihilator of Ext, and classes of rings close to being Gorenstein

In this note we study trace ideals of canonical modules. Characterizations of the trace ideals in terms of annihilators of certain Ext modules are given. We apply our results to study many classes of rings close to being Gorenstein that appear in recent literature. We discuss the behavior of nearly Gorensteinness, introduced by Herzog-Hibi-Stamate, under reductions by regular sequences. A nearly Gorenstein version of the Tachikawa conjecture is posed, and an affirmative answer given for type 2 rings. We also introduce the class of weakly almost Gorenstein rings using the canonical module, and show that they are almost Gorenstein rings in dimension one, and are closely related to Teter rings in the artinian case. We explain their basic properties and give some examples.

Symbolic analytic spread: upper bounds and applications

The symbolic analytic spread of an ideal $I$ is defined in terms of the rate of growth of the minimal number of generators of its symbolic powers. In this article we find upper bounds for the symbolic analytic spread under certain conditions in terms of other invariants of $I$. Our methods also work for more general systems of ideals. As applications we provide bounds for the (local) Kodaira dimension of divisors, the arithmetic rank, and the Frobenius complexity. We also show sufficient conditions for an ideal to be a set-theoretic complete intersection.

Burch ideals and Burch rings

We introduce the notion of Burch ideals and Burch rings. They are easy to define, and can be viewed as generalization of many well-known concepts, for example integrally closed ideals of finite colength and Cohen--Macaulay rings of minimal multiplicity. We give several characterizations of these objects. We show that they satisfy many interesting and desirable properties: ideal-theoretic, homological, categorical. We relate them to other classes of ideals and rings in the literature.

On generalized Hilbert-Kunz function and multiplicity

Let $(R,\mathfrak m)$ be a local ring of characteristic $p>0$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. In this note we consider the limit: $\lim_{n\to \infty} \frac{\ell(H^0_{\mathfrak m}(F^n(M)))}{p^{n\dim R}} $ where $F(-)$ is the Peskine-Szpiro functor. A consequence of our main results shows that the limit always exists when $R$ is excellent and has isolated singularity. Furthermore, if $R$ is a complete intersection, then the limit is 0 if and only if the projective dimension of $M$ is less than the Krull dimension of $R$. We exploit this fact to give a quick proof that if $R$ is a complete intersection of dimension $3$, then the Picard group of the punctured spectrum of $R$ is torsion-free. Our results work quite generally for other homological functors and can be used to prove that certain limits recently studied by Brenner exist over projective varieties.

Minimal Cohen-Macaulay Simplicial Complexes

We define and study the notion of a minimal Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex. We prove that any Cohen-Macaulay complex is shelled over a minimal one in our sense, and we give sufficient conditions for a complex to be minimal Cohen-Macaulay. We show that many interesting examples of Cohen-Macaulay complexes in combinatorics are minimal, including Rudin's ball, Ziegler's ball, the dunce hat, and recently discovered non-partitionable Cohen-Macaulay complexes. We further provide various ways to construct such complexes.

On asymptotic vanishing behavior of local cohomology

Let $R$ be a standard graded algebra over a field $k$, with irrelevant maximal ideal $\fm$, and $I$ a homogeneous $R$-ideal. We study the asymptotic vanishing behavior of the graded components of the local cohomology modules $\{\HH{i}{\fm}{R/I^n}\}_{n\in \NN}$ for $i<\dim R/I$. We show that, when $\chara k= 0$, $R/I$ is Cohen-Macaulay, and $I$ is a complete intersection locally on $\Spec R \setminus\{\fm\}$, the lowest degrees of the modules $\{\HH{i}{\fm}{R/I^n}\}_{n\in \NN}$ are bounded by a linear function whose slope is controlled by the generating degrees of the dual of $I/I^2$. Our result is a direct consequence of a related bound for symmetric powers of locally free modules. If no assumptions are made on the ideal or the field $k$, we show that the complexity of the sequence of lowest degrees is at most polynomial, provided they are finite. Our methods also provide a result on stabilization of maps between local cohomology of consecutive powers of ideals.

On monomial Golod ideals

We study ideal-theoretic conditions for a monomial ideal to be Golod. For ideals in a polynomial ring in three variables, our criteria give a complete characterization. Over such rings, we show that the product of two monomial ideals is Golod.

The Type Defect of a Simplicial Complex

Fix a field $k$. When $Δ$ is a simplicial complex on $n$ vertices with Stanley-Reisner ideal $I_Δ$, we define and study an invariant called the $\textit{type defect}$ of $Δ$. Except when $Δ$ is of a single simplex, the type defect of $Δ$, $\textrm{td}(Δ)$, is the difference $ \dim_k \textrm{Tor}_c^S(S/ I_Δ,k) - c$, where $c$ is the codimension of $Δ$ and $S = k[x_1, \ldots x_n]$. We show that this invariant admits surprisingly nice properties. For example, it is well-behaved when one glues two complexes together along a face. Furthermore, $Δ$ is Cohen-Macaulay if $\textrm{td}(Δ) \leq 0$. On the other hand, if $Δ$ is a simple graph (viewed as a one-dimensional complex), then $\textrm{td}(Δ') \geq 0$ for every induced subgraph $Δ'$ of $Δ$ if and only if $Δ$ is chordal. Requiring connected induced subgraphs to have type defect zero allows us to define a class of graphs that we call $\textit{treeish}$, and which we generalize to simplicial complexes. We then extend some of our chordality results to higher dimensions, proving sharp lower bounds for most Betti numbers of ideals with linear resolution, and classifying when equalities occur. As an application, we prove sharp lower bounds for Betti numbers of graded ideals (not necessarily monomial) with linear resolution.

Higher Nerves of Simplicial Complexes

We investigate generalized notions of the nerve complex for the facets of a simplicial complex. We show that the homologies of these higher nerve complexes determine the depth of the Stanley-Reisner ring $k[Δ]$ as well as the $f$-vector and $h$-vector of $Δ$. We present, as an application, a formula for computing regularity of monomial ideals.

Cohomologically full rings

Inspired by a question raised by Eisenbud-Mustaţă-Stillman regarding the injectivity of maps from ${\rm Ext}$ modules to local cohomology modules and the work by the third author with Pham, we introduce a class of rings which we call cohomologically full rings. This class of rings include many well-known singularities: Cohen-Macaulay rings, Stanley-Reisner rings, F-pure rings in positive characteristics, Du Bois singularities in characteristics $0$. We prove many basic properties of cohomologically full rings, including their behavior under flat base change. We show that ideals defining these rings satisfy many desirable properties, in particular they have small cohomological and projective dimension. When $R$ is a standard graded algebra over a field of characteristic $0$, we show under certain conditions that being cohomologically full is equivalent to the intermediate local cohomology modules being generated in degree $0$. Furthermore, we obtain Kodaira-type vanishing and strong bounds on the regularity of cohomologically full graded algebras.

The multiplicity and the number of generators of an integrally closed ideal

Let $(R, \mathfrak m)$ be a Noetherian local ring and $I$ a $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal. In this paper, we study an inequality involving the number of generators, the Loewy length and the multiplicity of $I$. There is strong evidence that the inequality holds for all integrally closed ideals of finite colength if and only if $R$ has sufficiently nice singularities. We verify the inequality for regular local rings in all dimensions, for rational singularity in dimension $2$, and cDV singularities in dimension $3$. In addition, we can classify when the inequality always hold for a Cohen-Macaulay $R$ of dimension at most two. We also discuss relations to various topics: classical results on rings with minimal multiplicity and rational singularities, the recent work on $p_g$ ideals by Okuma-Watanabe-Yoshida, multiplicity of the fiber cone, and the $h$-vector of the associated graded ring.

Hom and Ext, Revisited

Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring and $M,N$ be finitely generated $R$-modules. We prove a number of results of the form: if $\mbox{Hom}_R(M,N)$ has some nice properties and $\mbox{Ext}^{1 \leq i \leq n}_R(M,N)=0$ for some $n$, then $M$ (and sometimes $N$) must be be close to free. Our methods are quite elementary, yet they suffice to give a unified treatment, simplify, and sometimes extend a number of results in the literature.

Length of local cohomology of powers of ideals

Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field $k$ with irrelevant ideal $\frak m$ and dimension $d$. Let $I$ be a homogeneous ideal in $R$. We study the asymptotic behavior of the length of the modules $H^{i}_{\frak m}(R/I^n)$ for $n\gg 0$. We show that for a fixed number $α\in \mathbb Z$, $\limsup_{n\rightarrow \infty}\frac{λ(H^{i}_{\frak m}(R/I^n)_{\geq -αn})}{n^d}<\infty.$ Combining this with recent strong vanishing results gives that $\limsup_{n\rightarrow \infty}\frac{λ(H^{i}_{\frak m}{R/I^n})}{n^d}<\infty$ in many situations. We also establish that the actual limit exists and is rational for certain classes of monomial ideals $I$ such that the lengths of local cohomology of $I^n$ are eventually finite. Our proofs use Gröbner deformation and Presburger arithmetic. Finally, we utilize more traditional commutative algebra techniques to show that $\liminf_{n\rightarrow \infty}\frac{λ(H^{i}_{\frak m}(R/I^n))}{n^d}>0$ when $R/I$ has "nice" singularities in both zero and positive characteristics.

Symbolic powers of ideals

We survey classical and recent results on symbolic powers of ideals. We focus on properties and problems of symbolic powers over regular rings, on the comparison of symbolic and regular powers, and on the combinatorics of the symbolic powers of monomial ideals. In addition, we present some new results on these aspects of the subject.

Gorenstein modifications and $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein rings

Let $R$ be a Cohen--Macaulay normal domain with a canonical module $ω_R$. It is proved that if $R$ admits a noncommutative crepant resolution (NCCR), then necessarily it is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein. Writing $S$ for a Zariski local canonical cover of $R$, then a tight relationship between the existence of noncommutative (crepant) resolutions on $R$ and $S$ is given. A weaker notion of Gorenstein modification is developed, and a similar tight relationship is given. There are three applications: non-Gorenstein quotient singularities by connected reductive groups cannot admit an NCCR, the centre of any NCCR is log-terminal, and the Auslander--Esnault classification of two-dimensional CM-finite algebras can be deduced from Buchweitz--Greuel--Schreyer.
