Bounds on the regularity and projective dimension of ideals associated to graphs

In this paper we give new upper bounds on the regularity of edge ideals whose resolutions are k-steps linear; surprisingly, the bounds are logarithmic in the number of variables. We also give various bounds for the projective dimension of such ideals, generalizing other recent results. By Alexander duality, our results also apply to unmixed square-free monomial ideals of codimension two. We also discuss and connect these results to more classical topics in commutative algebra.

Necessary conditions for the depth formula over Cohen-Macaulay local rings

Let $R$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and let $M$ and $N$ be non-zero finitely generated $R$-modules. We investigate necessary conditions for the depth formula $\depth(M)+\depth(N)=\depth(R)+\depth(M\otimes_{R}N)$ to hold. We show that, under certain conditions, $M$ and $N$ satisfy the depth formula if and only if $\Tor_{i}^{R}(M,N)$ vanishes for all $i\geq 1$. We also examine the relationship between good depth of $M\otimes_RN$ and the vanishing of $\Ext$ modules, with various applications.

Bounds on the Hilbert-Kunz Multiplicity

In this paper we give new lower bounds on the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of unmixed non-regular local rings, bounding them uniformly away from one. Our results improve previous work of Aberbach and Enescu.

Decent intersection and Tor-rigidity for modules over local hypersurfaces

We study two properties of modules over a local hypersurface $R$: decency and rigidity. We show that the vanishing of Hochster's function $θ^R(M,N)$, known to imply decent intersection, also implies rigidity. We investigate the vanishing of $θ^R(M,N)$ to obtain new results about decency and rigidity over hypersurfaces. We employ a mixture of techniques from Commutative Algebra and Intersection Theory of algebraic cycles.

Picard groups of punctured spectra of dimension three local hypersurfaces are torsion-free

Let (R,m) be a local ring and U_R=Spec(R) -{m} be the punctured spectrum of R. Gabber conjectured that if R is a complete intersection of dimension 3, then the abelian group Pic(U_R) is torsion-free. In this note we prove Gabber's statement for the hypersurface case. We also point out certain connections between Gabber's Conjecture, Van den Bergh's notion of non-commutative crepant resolutions and some well-studied questions in homological algebra over local rings.

Vanishing of Ext, cluster tilting modules and finite global dimension of endomorphism rings

Let R be a Cohen-Macaulay ring and M a maximal Cohen-Macaulay R-module. Inspired by recent striking work by Iyama, Burban-Iyama-Keller-Reiten and Van den Bergh we study the question of when the endomorphism ring of M has finite global dimension via certain conditions about vanishing of $\Ext$ modules. We are able to strengthen certain results by Iyama on connections between a higher dimension version of Auslander correspondence and existence of non-commutative crepant resolutions. We also recover and extend to positive characteristics a recent Theorem by Burban-Iyama-Keller-Reiten on cluster-tilting objects in the category of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over reduced 1-dimensional hypersurfaces.

Asymptotic Behavior of Ext functors for modules of finite complete intersection dimension

Let $R$ be a local ring, and let $M$ and $N$ be finitely generated $R$-modules such that $M$ has finite complete intersection dimension. In this paper we define and study, under certain conditions, a pairing using the modules $\Ext_R^i(M,N)$ which generalizes Buchweitz's notion of the Herbrand diference. We exploit this pairing to examine the number of consecutive vanishing of $\Ext_R^i(M,N)$ needed to ensure that $\Ext_R^i(M,N)=0$ for all $i\gg 0$. Our results recover and improve on most of the known bounds in the literature, especially when $R$ has dimension at most two.

Comparing complexities of pairs of modules

Let $R$ be a local ring and $M,N$ be finitely generated $R$-modules. The complexity of $(M,N)$, denoted by $\cxx RMN$, measures the polynomial growth rate of the number of generators of the modules $\Ext nRMN$. In this paper we study several basic equalities and inequalities involving complexities of different pairs of modules.

Asymptotic behavior of Tor over complete intersections and applications

Let $R$ be a local complete intersection and $M,N$ are $R$-modules such that $\ell(\Tor_i^R(M,N))<\infty$ for $i\gg 0$. Imitating an approach by Avramov and Buchweitz, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of $\ell(\Tor_i^R(M,N))$ using Eisenbud operators and show that they have well-behaved growth. We define and study a function $η^R(M,N)$ which generalizes Serre's intersection multiplicity $χ^R(M,N)$ over regular local rings and Hochster's function $θ^R(M,N)$ over local hypersurfaces. We use good properties of $η^R(M,N)$ to obtain various results on complexities of $\Tor$ and $\Ext$, vanishing of $\Tor$, depth of tensor products, and dimensions of intersecting modules over local complete intersections.

Some observations on local and projective hypersurfaces

Let $R$ be a hypersurface in an equicharacteristic or unramified regular local ring. For a pair of modules $(M,N)$ over $R$ we study applications of rigidity of $\Tor^R(M,N)$, based on ideas by Huneke, Wiegand and Jorgensen. We then focus on the hypersurfaces with isolated singularity and even dimension, and show that modules over such rings behave very much like those over regular local rings. Connections and applications to projective hypersurfaces such as intersection dimension of subvarieties and cohomological criterion for splitting of vector bundles are discussed.

On liftable and weakly liftable modules

Let $T$ be a Noetherian ring and $f$ a nonzerodivisor on $T$. We study concrete necessary and sufficient conditions for a module over $R=T/(f)$ to be weakly liftable to $T$, in the sense of Auslander, Ding and Solberg. We focus on cyclic modules and get various positive and negative results on the lifting and weak lifting problems. For a module over $T$ we define the loci for certain properties: liftable, weakly liftable, having finite projective dimension and study their relationships.
