Topological phases in pseudospin-1 Fermi gases with two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit (SO) coupling for ultracold bosons and fermions opens an exciting avenue for engineering quantum matter that may be challenging to realize in solid state materials such as SO coupled spin-1 fermions. While one-dimensional SO coupling for spin-1 bosons has been experimentally realized, the generation of two-dimensional (2D) SO coupling and its topological properties are largely unexplored. Here we propose an experimental scheme for realizing a 2D Dresselhaus-type SO coupling in a square lattice for spin-1 Fermi gases. Because of the extended spin degree of freedom, many interesting topological phases could exist without relying on lattice point group symmetries that are crucial in solid state materials. These exotic phases include triply-degenerate points, quadratic band touching, a large Chern number ($C=5$) superfluid with 5 Majorana modes, triple-Weyl fermions, etc. Our scheme can be generalized to larger spins and provides a new route for engineering topological quantum matter by utilizing large spin degrees of freedom, instead of specific lattice symmetries.

Dynamical Singularities of Floquet Higher-Order Topological Insulators

We propose a versatile framework to dynamically generate Floquet higher-order topological insulators by multi-step driving of topologically trivial Hamiltonians. Two analytically solvable examples are used to illustrate this procedure to yield Floquet quadrupole and octupole insulators with zero- and/or $π$-corner modes protected by mirror symmetries. Furthermore, we introduce dynamical topological invariants from the full unitary return map and show its phase bands contain Weyl singularities whose topological charges form dynamical multipole moments in the Brillouin zone. Combining them with the topological index of Floquet Hamiltonian gives a pair of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant $ν_0$ and $ν_π$ which fully characterize the higher-order topology and predict the appearance of zero- and $π$-corner modes. Our work establishes a systematic route to construct and characterize Floquet higher-order topological phases.

Chiral to helical Majorana fermion transition in a $p$-wave superconductor

Chiral and helical Majorana edge modes are two archetypal gapless excitations of two-dimensional topological superconductors. They belong to superconductors from two different Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes characterized by $\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant respectively. It seems improbable to tune a pair of co-propagating chiral edge modes to counter-propagate without symmetry breaking. Here we show that such a direct topological transition is in fact possible, provided the system possesses an additional symmetry $\mathcal{O}$ which changes the bulk topological invariant to $\mathbb{Z}\oplus \mathbb{Z}$ type. A simple model describing the proximity structure of a Chern insulator and a $p_x$-wave superconductor is proposed and solved analytically to illustrate the transition between two topologically nontrivial phases. The weak pairing phase has two chiral Majorana edge modes, while the strong pairing phase is characterized by $\mathcal{O}$-graded Chern number and hosts a pair of counter-propagating Majorana fermions. The bulk topological invariants and edge theory are worked out in detail. Implications of these results to topological quantum computing based on Majorana fermions are discussed.

Effect of incommensurate potential on nodal-link semimetals

We explore the effect of an incommensurate potential on nodal-link semimetals. For system with surface states, we show the nodal-link semimetal undergoes a series of phase transitions: first into a metallic phase, then to a loop semimetal phase and back to a metallic phase with increasing the strength of incommensurate potential. The phase transitions are unveiled by analyzing the properties of energy spectra and wave functions. We also study the system without surface states and find that the Fermi surface evolves from lines to loops before the system enters into a metallic phase when increasing the incommensurate potential strength.

Majorana Doublets, Flat Bands, and Dirac Nodes in s-Wave Superfluids

Topological superfluids protected by mirror and time-reversal symmetries are exotic states of matter possessing Majorana Kramers pairs (MKPs), yet their realizations have long been hindered by the requirement of unconventional pairing. We propose to realize such a topological superfluid by utilizing $s$-wave pairing and emergent mirror and time-reversal symmetries in two coupled 1D ultracold atomic Fermi gases with spin-orbit coupling. By stacking such systems into 2D, we discover topological and Dirac-nodal superfluids hosting distinct MKP flat bands. We show that the emergent symmetries make the MKPs and their flat bands stable against pairing fluctuations that otherwise annihilate paired Majoranas. Exploiting new experimental developments, our scheme provides a unique platform for exploring MKPs and their applications in quantum computation.

Topological Triply Degenerate Points Induced by Spin-Tensor-Momentum Couplings

The recent discovery of triply degenerate points (TDPs) in topological materials has opened a new perspective toward the realization of novel quasiparticles without counterparts in quantum field theory. The emergence of such protected nodes is often attributed to spin-vector-momentum couplings. Here we show that the interplay between spin-tensor- and spin-vector-momentum couplings can induce three types of TDPs, classified by different monopole charges ($\mathcal{C}=\pm 2,\pm 1,0$). A Zeeman field can lift them into Weyl points with distinct numbers and charges. Different TDPs of the same type are connected by intriguing Fermi arcs at surfaces, and transitions between different types are accompanied by level crossings along high-symmetry lines. We further propose an experimental scheme to realize such TDPs in cold-atom optical lattices. Our results provide a framework for studying spin-tensor-momentum coupling-induced TDPs and other exotic quasiparticles.

Superfluid-quasicrystal in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Quasicrystal is a class of ordered structures defying conventional classification of solid crystals and may carry classically forbidden (e.g., 5-fold) rotational symmetries. In view of long-sought supersolids, a natural question is whether a superfluid can spontaneously form quasicrystalline order that is not possessed by the underlying Hamiltonian, forming "superfluid-quasicrystals". Here we show that a superfluid-quasicrystal stripe state with the minimal 5-fold rotational symmetry can be realized as the ground state of a Bose-Einstein condensate within a practical experimental scheme. There exists a rich phase diagram consisting of various superfluid-quasicrystal, supersolid, and plane-wave phases. Our scheme can be generalized for generating other higher-order (e.g., 7-fold) quasicrystal states, and provides a platform for investigating such new exotic quantum matter.

Spin-1 Topological Monopoles in Parameter Space of Ultracold Atoms

Magnetic monopole, a hypothetical elementary particle with isolated magnetic pole, is crucial for the quantization of electric charge. In recent years, analogues of magnetic monopoles, represented by topological defects in parameter spaces, have been studied in a wide range of physical systems. These works mainly focused on Abelian Dirac monopoles in spin-1/2 or non-Abelian Yang monopoles in spin-3/2 systems. Here we propose to realize three types of spin-1 topological monopoles and study their geometric properties using the parameter space formed by three hyperfine states of ultracold atoms coupled by radio-frequency fields. These spin-1 monopoles, characterized by different monopole charges, possess distinct Berry curvature fields and spin textures, which are directly measurable in experiments. The topological phase transitions between different monopoles are accompanied by the emergence of spin "vortex", and can be intuitively visualized using Majorana's stellar representation. We show how to determine the Berry curvature, hence the geometric phase and monopole charge from dynamical effects. Our scheme provides a simple and highly tunable platform for observing and manipulating spin-1 topological monopoles, paving the way for exploring new topological quantum matter.

Topological Mott Insulator with Bosonic Edge Modes in 1D Fermionic Superlattices

We investigate topological phase transitions driven by interaction and identify a novel topological Mott insulator state in one-dimensional fermionic optical superlattices through numerical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. Remarkably, the low-energy edge excitations change from spin-1/2 fermionic single-particle modes to spin-1 bosonic collective modes across the phase transition. Due to spin-charge separation, the low-energy theory is governed by an effective spin superexchange model, whereas the charge degree of freedom is fully gapped out. Such topological Mott state can be characterized by a spin Chern number and gapless magnon modes protected by a finite spin gap. The proposed experimental setup is simple and may pave the way for the experimental observation of exotic topological Mott states.

Exact ordering of energy levels for one-dimensional interacting Fermi gases with $SU(n)$ symmetry

Based on the exact solution of one-dimensional Fermi gas systems with $SU(n)$ symmetry in a hard wall, we demonstrate that we are able to sort the ordering of the lowest energy eigenvalues of states with all allowed permutation symmetries, which can be solely marked by certain quantum numbers in the Bethe ansatz equations. Our results give examples beyond the scope of the generalized Lieb-Mattis theorem, which can only compare the ordering of energy levels of states belonging to different symmetry classes if they are comparable according to the pouring principle. In the strongly interacting regime, we show that the ordering of energy levels can be determined by an effective spin-exchange model and extend our results to the non-uniform system trapped in the harmonic potential.

Strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixtures in one dimension

We study one-dimensional strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixtures by both the exact Bethe-ansatz method and variational perturbation theory within the degenerate ground state subspace of the system in the infinitely repulsive limit. Based on the exact solution of the one-dimensional Bose-Fermi gas with equal boson-boson and boson-fermion interaction strengths, we demonstrate that the ground state energy is degenerate for different Bose-Fermi configurations and the degeneracy is lifted when the interaction deviates the infinitely interacting limit. We then show that the ground properties in the strongly interacting regime can be well characterized by using the variational perturbation method within the degenerate ground state subspace, which can be applied to deal with more general cases with anisotropic interactions and in external traps. Our results indicate that the total ground-state density profile in the strongly repulsive regime behaves like the polarized noninteracting fermions, whereas the density distributions of bosons and fermions display different properties for different Bose-Fermi configurations and are sensitive to the anisotropy of interactions.

Strongly interacting one-dimensional quantum gas mixtures with weak p-wave interactions

We study one-dimensional strongly interacting quantum gas mixtures, including both the Bose-Fermi and spin-1/2 Fermi-Fermi mixtures, with weak p-wave interactions between intra-component fermions, and demonstrate that the weak p-wave interaction can not be omitted in the strongly interacting regime where the strength of p-wave interactions is comparable with the inverse of the strength of strongly repulsive s-wave interactions. While the total density distribution is not sensitive to the weak p-wave interaction, we find that the p-wave interaction plays an important role in determining the species-dependent (or spin-dependent) density distributions and produces significant physical effects on the low-energy spin dynamics. We also derive effective spin-exchange models for strongly interacting quantum gas mixtures with weak p-wave interactions, which indicate that a quantum phase transition from anti-ferromagnetic state to ferromagnetic state can be induced by tuning the relative strengths of intra-component and inter-component interactions.

Fractional Topological States in Quantum Spin Chains with Periodical Modulation

We report the findings of fractional topological states in one-dimensional periodically modulated quantum spin chains with up to third neighbor interactions. By exact numerical studies, we demonstrate the existence of topologically nontrivial degenerate ground states at some specific magnetizations, which can be characterized by the nonzero-integer total Chern numbers of the degenerate ground states and the emergence of nontrivial edge states under open boundary conditions. We find that the low-energy excitations obey bosonic $ν=1/2$ fractional statistics for the spin-$1/2$ system and $ν=1$ non-Abelian statistics for the spin-$1$ system, respectively. The discovered fractional quantum states provide another route to the theoretical exploration of fractional quantum states in correlated spin systems.

Phase diagram and topological superfluid state of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas with attractive interactions in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Based on density matrix renormalization group method, we investigate the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas with attractive interactions in one-dimensional optical lattice and present a complete phase diagram for a quarter-filling system with intermediate strong interactions. We unveil the exotic pairings induced by spin-orbit couplings and the phase transitions between different pairing states, and further demonstrate the existence of the long-sought topological superfluid state at moderate magnetic field and spin-orbit coupling strength. For the particle conserved system, this topological superfluid state can be fixed by its gapless single particle excitation, Luttinger parameter and non-trivial boundary effect. Our study removes out the widespread doubt on the existence of topological superfluid in one dimension and paves the way for simulating topological superfluid states in cold atom settings.

Many-body ground state localization and coexistence of localized and extended states in an interacting quasiperiodic system

We study the localization problem of one-dimensional interacting spinless fermions in an incommensurate optical lattice, which changes from an extended phase to a nonergoic many-body localized phase by increasing the strength of the incommensurate potential. We identify that there exists an intermediate regime before the system enters the many-body localized phase, in which both the localized and extended many-body states coexist, thus the system is divided into three different phases, which can be characterized by normalized participation ratios of the many-body eigenstates and distributions of natural orbitals of the corresponding one-particle density matrix. This is very different from its noninterating limit, in which all eigenstaes undergo a delocaliztion-localization transtion when the strength of the incommensurate potential exceeds a critical value.

Topological nature of magnetization plateaus in periodically modulated quantum spin chains

We unveil nontrivial topological properties of zero-temperature magnetization plateau states in periodically modulated quantum spin chains under a uniform magnetic field. As positions of plateaus are uniquely determined by the modulation period of exchange couplings, we find that the topologically nontrivial plateau state can be characterized by a nonzero integer Chern number and has nontrivial edge excitations. Our study clarifies the topological origin of the well-known phenomena of quantized magnetization plateaus in one-dimensional quantum spin systems and relates the plateau state to the correlated topological insulator.

Ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition of one-dimensional spinor Bose gases with spin-orbit coupling

We have analytically solved one-dimensional interacting two-component bosonic gases with spin-orbit (SO) coupling by the Bethe-ansatz method. Through a gauge transformation, the effect of SO coupling is incorporated into a spin-dependent twisted boundary condition. Our result shows that the SO coupling can influence the eigenenergy in a periodical pattern. The interplay between interaction and SO coupling may induce the energy level crossing for the ground state, which leads to a transition from the ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic state.

Mapping trapped atomic gas with spin-orbit coupling to quantum Rabi-like model

We construct a connection of the ultracold atomic system in a harmonic trap with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling to the quantum Rabi-like model. By mapping the trapped atomic system to a Rabi-like model, we can get the exact solution of the Rabi-like model following the methods to solve the quantum Rabi model. The existence of such a mapping implies that we can study the basic model in quantum optics by using trapped atomic gases with spin-orbit coupling.
