Development of Neutron Transmutation Doped Germanium (NTD-Ge) for Cryogenic Applications

This paper presents the systematic fabrication and characterization of cryogenic thermometers based on neutron transmutation-doped germanium (NTD-Ge). High-purity (10N) germanium samples were irradiated by thermal neutrons with different fluences at the China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR). After irradiation and a six-month cooling-down period, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and temperature-dependent Hall effect measurements were performed to characterize irradiation-induced defects and carrier concentrations in the NTD-Ge samples. Utilizing standard semiconductor fabrication techniques, point electrodes were deposited onto the processed samples to fabricate functional NTD-Ge cryogenic thermometers. The low-temperature resistance performance of the devices was characterized down to 20 mK on a millikelvin range cryogenic test platform. The measured temperature dependence of resistance follows Mott's law, showing excellent agreement across the full measured range. The extracted T0 is consistent with expectations. These results collectively verified both the applicability of the thermometers in cryogenic system and the reliability of the fabrication procedure.

Pre-study of a Li2MoO4 based bolometer for 100Mo neutrinoless double beta decay experiment in China

The cryogenic phonon scintillating bolometer is a promising and extremely attractive option to search for the nuclide neutrinoless double beta decay. In this paper, a pre-study of bolometer based on Li2MoO4 (LMO) crystal is presented, in which the properties of the LMO crystal at the low temperature, including scintillation characteristics and specific heat, are investigated in detail. The excitation spectrum and light yield are measured from the room temperature down to 10 K, and heat capacity is measured down to temperature of O(200) mK. Furthermore, a (2 cm)3 cubic LMO based bolometer is manufactured and tested at ultra-low mK-level temperature in a ground-above cryostat platform, and a good energy resolution is achieved. The studies laid a foundation to manufacture the bolometer detector in China and conduct neutrinoless double beta decay research at the China Jinping Underground Laborator

Status and prospect of weak radiative hyperon decays

Weak radiative hyperon decays represent a rich interplay between weak interactions and the internal structure of baryons, offering profound insights into Quantum Chromodynamics and weak interactions. Recent experimental observations, particularly from BESIII, have revealed deviations from theoretical predictions. These deviations could signal new physics or the need for refined theoretical models incorporating intermediate resonance effects. This review discusses recent theoretical advancements and key experimental findings, focusing on recent measurements from BESIII and their implications for strong interactions and baryon structure.

CP violation studies at Super Tau-Charm Facility

Charge-parity ($C\!P$) violation in the tau-charm energy region is a promising area for sensitive tests of Standard Model (SM) predictions and searches for new, beyond the SM physics. A future Tau-Charm Facility that operates at center-of-mass energies between 2.0 and 7.0 GeV, with a peak luminosity of $0.5\times10^{35}$~cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, would provide huge numbers of hadrons and tau ($\tau$) leptons that are produced in low-background environments and with well understood kinematic properties. In this report, prospects for unique studies of $C\!P$ violation in the decay of charmed hadrons, and in the production and decay of hyperons and $\tau$ leptons at a next-generation tau-charm facility are discussed. In addition, opportunities for improved tests of $CPT$ invariance test in $K^{0}-\bar{K}^{0}$ mixing are presented.

Unfolding environmental $\gamma$ flux spectrum with portable CZT detector

Environmental $\gamma$-rays constitute a crucial source of background in various nuclear, particle and quantum physics experiments. To evaluate the flux rate and the spectrum of $\gamma$ background, we have developed a novel and straightforward approach to reconstruct the environmental $\gamma$ flux spectrum by applying a portable CZT $\gamma$ detector and iterative Bayesian unfolding, which possesses excellent transferability for broader applications. In this paper, the calibration and GEANT4 Monte-Carlo modeling of the CZT detector, the unfolding procedure as well as the uncertainty estimation are demonstrated in detail. The reconstructed spectrum reveals an environmental $\gamma$ flux intensity of $3.3\pm 0.9\times 10^{7}$~ (m$^2\cdot$sr$\cdot$hour)$^{-1}$ ranging from 73 to 3033~keV, along with characteristic peaks primarily arising from $^{232}$Th series, $^{238}$U series and $^{40}$K. We also give an instance of background rate evaluation with the unfolded spectrum for validation of the approach.

Novel approach to investigate $\eta$ decays via $\eta'\rightarrow\pi\pi\eta$

To avoid the impact from the background events directly from $e^+e^-$ annihilations or $J/\psi$ decays, we propose a novel approach to investigate $\eta$ decays, in particular for its rare or forbidden decays, by using $\eta^\prime\rightarrow\pi\pi\eta$ produced in $J/\psi$ decays at the $\tau-$charm factories. Based on the MC studies of a few typical decays, $\eta\rightarrow \pi\pi$, $\gamma l^+l^- (l= e, \mu)$, $l^+l^-$, as well as $l^+l^-\pi^0$, the sensitivities could be obviously improved by taking advantage of the extra constraint of $\eta^\prime$. Using one trillion $J/\psi$ events accumulated at the Super $\tau$-Charm facility, the precision on the investigation of $\eta$ decays could be improved significantly and the observation of the rare decay $\eta\rightarrow e^+e^-$ is even accessable.

Measurement of reactor thermal neutron fluence of NTD-Ge by activation High-Purity Ge itself

In neutron transmutation doped germanium, the thermal neutron fluence of reactor irradiation is as high as 10$^{18}$~n$\cdot$cm$^{-2}$. For radiological safety reasons, general Co or Au neutron flux monitors cannot be easily used. We have experimentally demonstrated the feasibility of measuring the X-rays emitted by the NTD-Ge itself to determine the absolute thermal neutron fluence for the first time. A Micro-Megas Detector (MMD) and a Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) are set up to detect the tagging KX-rays with 9.2 keV and 10.3 keV cascading from the decays of $^{71}$Ge. Combined the detection efficiencies calculated by GEANT4, neutron fluence results given with proper accuracy by MMD and SDD are in a good agreement with each other.

A Light Yield Enhancement Method Using Wavelength Shifter for the STCF EMC

Super Tau-Charm Facility (STCF) is a next-generation high luminosity electron-positron collider facility and is currently one of the major options for accelerator-based particle physics experiment in China. The crystal-based electromagnetic calorimeter (EMC) with undoped CsI is a major sub-system of the STCF spectrometer. To fulfill the increasing physics requirements on measurement precision and the suffering of radiation, improving the detected light yield is an important task of STCF EMC R&D. This paper studies a "wavelength shifting in propagation" scheme for STCF EMC using the nanostructured organosilicon luminophore (NOL). The studies are performed by both Monte Carlo simulation and experimental tests. The light yield is proved to be improved by a factor of 1.59 in the experiment. Meanwhile, a study of the NOL's radiation hardness is carried out to verify the reliability of the NOL. No obvious degradation in the performance is observed with the total ionization does up to 100 krad, far beyond the total radiation dose of STCF with ten years of operation.

Hadron spectroscopy at STCF

Despite that quantum chromodynamics, the theory of strong interaction, has colorful quarks and gluons as its basic degrees of freedom, all fundamental particles participating the strong interaction that can be directly detected in experiments are colorless or color-singlet hadrons. This phenomenon is called color confinement. Because of that, the study of hadron spectroscopy is essential in improving our understanding of the nonperturbative regime of QCD and to reveal the mechanism of color confinement. The high-luminosity electron-positron collision machine under discussion, Super tau-Charm Facility (STCF), can play an essential role in hadron spectroscopy by discovering new hadron resonances and measuring properties of known hadrons with an unprecedented precision. In the following, we will discuss briefly the topics on hadron spectroscopy that will be investigated at STCF.

Development of a Data-Driven Method to Simulate the Detector Response of Anti-neutron at BESIII

In this paper, a data-driven method to precisely simulate the detector response of the anti-neutron depositing in the Electromagnetic Calorimeter (EMC)at BESIII is introduced. A large anti-neutron data sample can be selected using the decay $J/\psi\to p\bar{n}\pi^{-}$ from the BESIII data sample of 10 billion $J/\psi$ events. The detection efficiency for and various observables of anti-neutrons interacting in the EMC detector are simulated, taking the correlations among the variables into consideration. The systematic uncertainty of this data-driven simulation method is determined to be less than 1\% on average. This method can be widely applied in physics processes that require precise simulation of the detector response of anti-neutrons in the EMC.

A vertex reconstruction algorithm in the central detector of JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is designed to study neutrino mass hierarchy and measure three of the neutrino oscillation parameters with high precision using reactor antineutrinos. It is also able to study many other physical phenomena, including supernova neutrinos, solar neutrinos, geo-neutrinos, atmosphere neutrinos, and so forth. The central detector of JUNO contains 20,000~tons of liquid scintillator (LS) and about 18,000 20-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), which is the largest liquid scintillator one under construction in the world up today. The energy resolution is expected to be 3\%/$\sqrt{E(MeV)}$. To meet the requirements of the experiment, an algorithm of vertex reconstruction, which takes into account time and charge information of PMTs, has been developed by deploying the maximum likelihood method and well understanding the complicated optical processes in the liquid scintillator.
