Well-Posedness of Transonic Characteristic Discontinuities in Two-Dimensional Steady Compressible Euler Flows

In our previous work, we have established the existence of transonic characteristic discontinuities separating supersonic flows from a static gas in two-dimensional steady compressible Euler flows under a perturbation with small total variation of the incoming supersonic flow over a solid right-wedge. It is a free boundary problem in Eulerian coordinates and, across the free boundary (characteristic discontinuity), the Euler equations are of elliptic-hyperbolic composite-mixed type. In this paper, we further prove that such a transonic characteristic discontinuity solution is unique and $L^1$--stable with respect to the small perturbation of the incoming supersonic flow in Lagrangian coordinates.

Stability of Transonic Characteristic Discontinuities in Two-Dimensional Steady Compressible Euler Flows

For a two-dimensional steady supersonic Euler flow past a convex cornered wall with right angle, a characteristic discontinuity (vortex sheet and/or entropy wave) is generated, which separates the supersonic flow from the gas at rest (hence subsonic). We proved that such a transonic characteristic discontinuity is structurally stable under small perturbations of the upstream supersonic flow in $BV$. The existence of a weak entropy solution and Lipschitz continuous free boundary (i.e. characteristic discontinuity) is established. To achieve this, the problem is formulated as a free boundary problem for a nonstrictly hyperbolic system of conservation laws; and the free boundary problem is then solved by analyzing nonlinear wave interactions and employing the front tracking method.

Local Uniqueness of Steady Spherical Transonic Shock-fronts for the Three-Dimensional Full Euler Equations

We establish the local uniqueness of steady transonic shock solutions with spherical symmetry for the three-dimensional full Euler equations. These transonic shock-fronts are important for understanding transonic shock phenomena in divergent nozzles. From mathematical point of view, we show the uniqueness of solutions of a free boundary problem for a multidimensional quasilinear system of mixed-composite elliptic--hyperbolic type. To this end, we develop a decomposition of the Euler system which works in a general Riemannian manifold, a method to study a Venttsel problem of nonclassical nonlocal elliptic operators, and an iteration mapping which possesses locally a unique fixed point. The approach reveals an intrinsic structure of the steady Euler system and subtle interactions of its elliptic and hyperbolic part.

Global Uniqueness of Steady Transonic Shocks in Two-Dimensional Compressible Euler Flows

We prove that for the two-dimensional steady complete compressible Euler system, with given uniform upcoming supersonic flows, the following three fundamental flow patterns (special solutions) in gas dynamics involving transonic shocks are all unique in the class of piecewise $C^1$ smooth functions, under appropriate conditions on the downstream subsonic flows: $(\rmnum{1})$ the normal transonic shocks in a straight duct with finite or infinite length, after fixing a point the shock-front passing through; $(\rmnum{2})$ the oblique transonic shocks attached to an infinite wedge; $(\rmnum{3})$ a flat Mach configuration containing one supersonic shock, two transonic shocks, and a contact discontinuity, after fixing the point the four discontinuities intersect. These special solutions are constructed traditionally under the assumption that they are piecewise constant, and they have played important roles in the studies of mathematical gas dynamics. Our results show that the assumption of piecewise constant can be replaced by some more weaker assumptions on the downstream subsonic flows, which are sufficient to uniquely determine these special solutions. Mathematically, these are uniqueness results on solutions of free boundary problems of a quasi-linear system of elliptic-hyperbolic composite-mixed type in bounded or unbounded planar domains, without any assumptions on smallness. The proof relies on an elliptic system of pressure $p$ and the tangent of the flow angle $w=v/u$ obtained by decomposition of the Euler system in Lagrangian coordinates, and a newly developed method for the $L^{\infty}$ estimate that is independent of the free boundaries, by combining the maximum principles of elliptic equations, and careful analysis of shock polar applied on the (maybe curved) shock-fronts.

Uniqueness and Instability of Subsonic--Sonic Potential Flow in A Convergent Approximate Nozzle

We proved uniqueness and instability of the symmetric subsonic--sonic flow solution of the compressible potential flow equation in a surface with convergent areas of cross--sections. Such a surface may be regarded as an approximation of a two--dimensional convergent nozzle in aerodynamics. Mathematically these are uniqueness and nonexistence results of a nonlinear degenerate elliptic equation with Bernoulli type boundary conditions. The proof depends on maximum principles and a generalized Hopf boundary point lemma which was proved in the paper.

Global Uniqueness of Transonic Shocks in Divergent Nozzles for Steady Potential Flows

We show that for steady compressible potential flow in a class of straight divergent nozzles with arbitrary cross-section, if the flow is supersonic and spherically symmetric at the entry, and the given pressure (velocity) is appropriately large (small) and also spherically symmetric at the exit, then there exists uniquely one transonic shock in the nozzle. In addition, the shock-front and the supersonic flow ahead of it, as well as the subsonic flow behind of it, are all spherically symmetric. This is a global uniqueness result of free boundary problems of elliptic--hyperbolic mixed type equations. The proof depends on the maximum principles and judicious choices of comparison functions.

Uniqueness of Transonic Shock Solutions in a Duct for Steady Potential Flow

We study the uniqueness of solutions with a transonic shock in a duct in a class of transonic shock solutions, which are not necessarily small perturbations of the background solution, for steady potential flow. We prove that, for given uniform supersonic upstream flow in a straight duct, there exists a unique uniform pressure at the exit of the duct such that a transonic shock solution exists in the duct, which is unique modulo translation. For any other given uniform pressure at the exit, there exists no transonic shock solution in the duct. This is equivalent to establishing a uniqueness theorem for a free boundary problem of a partial differential equation of second order in a bounded or unbounded duct. The proof is based on the maximum/comparison principle and a judicious choice of special transonic shock solutions as a comparison solution.

Transonic Potential Flows in A Convergent--Divergent Approximate Nozzle

In this paper we prove existence, uniqueness and regularity of certain perturbed (subsonic--supersonic) transonic potential flows in a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold with "convergent-divergent" metric, which is an approximate model of the de Laval nozzle in aerodynamics. The result indicates that transonic flows obtained by quasi-one-dimensional flow model in fluid dynamics are stable with respect to the perturbation of the velocity potential function at the entry (i.e., tangential velocity along the entry) of the nozzle. The proof is based upon linear theory of elliptic-hyperbolic mixed type equations in physical space and a nonlinear iteration method.
