Twisted modules for quantum vertex algebras

We study twisted modules for (weak) quantum vertex algebras and we give a conceptual construction of (weak) quantum vertex algebras and their twisted modules. As an application we construct and classify irreducible twisted modules for a certain family of quantum vertex algebras.

On vertex algebras and their modules associated with even lattices

We study vertex algebras and their modules associated with possibly degenerate even lattices, using an approach somewhat different from others. Several known results are recovered and a number of new results are obtained. We also study modules for Heisenberg algebras and we classify irreducible modules satisfying certain conditions and obtain a complete reducibility theorem.

Some quantum vertex algebras of Zamolodchikov-Faddeev type

This is a continuation of a previous study of quantum vertex algebras of Zamolodchikov-Faddeev type. In this paper, we focus our attention on the special case associated to diagonal unitary rational quantum Yang-Baxter operators. We prove that the associated weak quantum vertex algebras, if not zero, are irreducible quantum vertex algebras with a normal basis in a certain sense.

Modules-at-infinity for quantum vertex algebras

This is a sequel to \cite{li-qva1} and \cite{li-qva2} in a series to study vertex algebra-like structures arising from various algebras such as quantum affine algebras and Yangians. In this paper, we study two versions of the double Yangian $DY_{\hbar}(sl_{2})$, denoted by $DY_{q}(sl_{2})$ and $DY_{q}^{\infty}(sl_{2})$ with $q$ a nonzero complex number. For each nonzero complex number $q$, we construct a quantum vertex algebra $V_{q}$ and prove that every $DY_{q}(sl_{2})$-module is naturally a $V_{q}$-module. We also show that $DY_{q}^{\infty}(sl_{2})$-modules are what we call $V_{q}$-modules-at-infinity. To achieve this goal, we study what we call $§$-local subsets and quasi-local subsets of $\Hom (W,W((x^{-1})))$ for any vector space $W$, and we prove that any $§$-local subset generates a (weak) quantum vertex algebra and that any quasi-local subset generates a vertex algebra with $W$ as a (left) quasi module-at-infinity. Using this result we associate the Lie algebra of pseudo-differential operators on the circle with vertex algebras in terms of quasi modules-at-infinity.

A recurrence relation for characters of highest weight integrable modules for affine Lie algebras

Using certain results for the vertex operator algebras associated with affine Lie algebras we obtain recurrence relations for the characters of integrable highest weight irreducible modules for an affine Lie algebra. As an application we show that in the simply-laced level 1 case, these recurrence relations give the known characters, whose principal specializations naturally give rise to some multisum Macdonald identities.

On certain generalizations of twisted affine Lie algebras and quasimodules for $Γ$-vertex algebras

We continue a previous study on $Γ$-vertex algebras and their quasimodules. In this paper we refine certain known results and we prove that for any $\Z$-graded vertex algebra $V$ and a positive integer $N$, the category of $V$-modules is naturally isomorphic to the category of quasimodules of a certain type for $V^{\otimes N}$. We also study certain generalizations of twisted affine Lie algebras and we relate such Lie algebras to vertex algebras and their quasimodules, in a way similar to that twisted affine Lie algebras are related to vertex algebras and their twisted modules.

A smash product construction of nonlocal vertex algebras

A notion of vertex bialgebra and a notion of module nonlocal vertex algebra for a vertex bialgebra are studied and then a smash product construction of nonlocal vertex algebras is presented. For every nonlocal vertex algebra $V$ satisfying a suitable condition, a canonical bialgebra $B(V)$ is constructed such that primitive elements of $B(V)$ are essentially pseudo derivations and group-like elements are essentially pseudo endomorphisms. Furthermore, vertex algebras associated with Heisenberg Lie algebras as well as those associated with nondegenerate even lattices are reconstructed through smash products.

Nonlocal vertex algebras generated by formal vertex operators

This is the first paper in a series to study vertex algebra-like objects arising from infinite-dimensional quantum groups (quantum affine algebras and Yangians). In this paper we lay the foundation for this study. For any vector space $W$, we study what we call quasi compatible subsets of $\Hom (W,W((x)))$ and we prove that any maximal quasi compatible subspace has a natural nonlocal (namely noncommutative) vertex algebra structure with $W$ as a natural faithful quasi module in a certain sense and that any quasi compatible subset generates a nonlocal vertex algebra with $W$ as a quasi module. In particular, taking $W$ to be a highest weight module for a quantum affine algebra we obtain a nonlocal vertex algebra with $W$ as a quasi module. We also formulate and study a notion of quantum vertex algebra and we give general constructions of nonlocal vertex algebras, quantum vertex algebras and their modules.

Constructing quantum vertex algebras

This is a sequel to \cite{li-qva}. In this paper, we focus on the construction of quantum vertex algebras over $\C$, whose notion was formulated in \cite{li-qva} with Etingof and Kazhdan's notion of quantum vertex operator algebra (over $\C[[h]]$) as one of the main motivations. As one of the main steps in constructing quantum vertex algebras, we prove that every countable-dimensional nonlocal (namely noncommutative) vertex algebra over $\C$, which either is irreducible or has a basis of PBW type, is nondegenerate in the sense of Etingof and Kazhdan. Using this result, we establish the nondegeneracy of better known vertex operator algebras and some nonlocal vertex algebras. We then construct a family of quantum vertex algebras closely related to Zamolodchikov-Faddeev algebras.

Twisted modules for vertex algebras associated with vertex algebroids

We continue with [LY] to construct and classify graded simple twisted modules for the $\N$-graded vertex algebras constructed by Gorbounov, Malikov and Schechtman from vertex algebroids. Meanwhile we determine the full automorphism groups of those $\N$-graded vertex algebras in terms of the automorphism groups of the corresponding vertex algebroids.

On certain vertex algebras and their modules associated with vertex algebroids

We study the family of vertex algebras associated with vertex algebroids, constructed by Gorbounov, Malikov, and Schechtman. As the main result, we classify all the (graded) simple modules for such vertex algebras and we show that the equivalence classes of graded simple modules one-to-one correspond to the equivalence classes of simple modules for the Lie algebroids associated with the vertex algebroids. To achieve our goal, we construct and exploit a Lie algebra from a given vertex algebroid.

On the concepts of intertwining operator and tensor product module in vertex operator algebra theory

We produce counterexamples to show that in the definition of the notion of intertwining operator for modules for a vertex operator algebra, the commutator formula cannot in general be used as a replacement axiom for the Jacobi identity. We further give a sufficient condition for the commutator formula to imply the Jacobi identity in this definition. Using these results we illuminate the crucial role of the condition called the ``compatibility condition'' in the construction of the tensor product module in vertex operator algebra theory, as carried out in work of Huang and Lepowsky. In particular, we prove by means of suitable counterexamples that the compatibility condition was indeed needed in this theory.

Abelianizing vertex algebras

To every vertex algebra $V$ we associate a canonical decreasing sequence of subspaces and prove that the associated graded vector space $gr(V)$ is naturally a vertex Poisson algebra, in particular a commutative vertex algebra. We establish a relation between this sequence and the sequence $C_{n}$ introduced by Zhu. By using the (classical) algebra $gr(V)$, we prove that for any vertex algebra $V$, $C_{2}$-cofiniteness implies $C_{n}$-cofiniteness for all $n\ge 2$. We further use $gr(V)$ to study generating subspaces of certain types for lower truncated $Z$-graded vertex algebras.

A new construction of vertex algebras and quasi modules for vertex algebras

In this paper, a new construction of vertex algebras from more general vertex operators is given and a notion of quasi module for vertex algebras is introduced and studied. More specifically, a notion of quasi local subset(space) of $\Hom (W,W((x)))$ for any vector space $W$ is introduced and studied, generalizing the notion of usual locality in the most possible way, and it is proved that on any maximal quasi local subspace there exists a natural vertex algebra structure and that any quasi local subset of $\Hom (W,W((x)))$ generates a vertex algebra. Furthermore, a notion of quasi module for a vertex algebra is introduced and it is proved that $W$ is a quasi module for each of the vertex algebras generated by quasi local subsets of $\Hom (W,W((x)))$. A notion of $Γ$-vertex algebra is also introduced and studied, where $Γ$ is a subgroup of the multiplicative group $\C^{\times}$ of nonzero complex numbers. It is proved that any maximal quasi local subspace of $\Hom (W,W((x)))$ is naturally a $Γ$-vertex algebra and that any quasi local subset of $\Hom (W,W((x)))$ generates a $Γ$-vertex algebra. It is also proved that a $Γ$-vertex algebra exactly amounts to a vertex algebra equipped with a $Γ$-module structure which satisfies a certain compatibility condition. Finally, three families of examples are given, involving twisted affine Lie algebras, certain quantum Heisenberg algebras and certain quantum torus Lie algebras.

On certain categories of modules for affine Lie algebras

In this paper, we re-examine certain integrable modules of Chari-Presslely for an (untwisted) affine Lie algebra $\hat{\g}$ by exploiting basic formal variable techniques. We define and study two categories ${\mathcal{E}}$ and ${\mathcal{C}}$ of $\hat{\g}$-modules using generating functions, where ${\mathcal{E}}$ includes evaluation modules and ${\mathcal{C}}$ unifies highest weight modules, evaluation modules and their tensor product modules, and we classify integrable irreducible $\hat{\g}$-modules in categories ${\mathcal{E}}$ and ${\mathcal{C}}$.

Vertex algebras and vertex Poisson algebras

This paper studies certain relations among vertex algebras, vertex Lie algebras and vertex Poisson algebras. In this paper, the notions of vertex Lie algebra (conformal algebra) and vertex Poisson algebra are revisited and certain general construction theorems of vertex Poisson algebras are given. A notion of filtered vertex algebra is formulated in terms of a notion of good filtration and it is proved that the associated graded vector space of a filtered vertex algebra is naturally a vertex Poisson algebra. For any vertex algebra $V$, a general construction and a classification of good filtrations are given. To each $\N$-graded vertex algebra $V=\coprod_{n\in \N}V_{(n)}$ with $V_{(0)}=\C {\bf 1}$, a canonical (good) filtration is associated and certain results about generating subspaces of certain types of $V$ are also obtained. Furthermore, a notion of formal deformation of a vertex (Poisson) algebra is formulated and a formal deformation of vertex Poisson algebras associated with vertex Lie algebras is constructed.
