Polarized Image of a Synchrotron-emitting Ring in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar Theory

This study investigates polarized images of an equatorial synchrotron-emitting ring surrounding hairy black holes within the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory. Our analysis demonstrates qualitative similarities between the polarization patterns of hairy black holes and Schwarzschild black holes. However, due to the non-minimal coupling between the scalar and electromagnetic fields, an increase in black hole charge and coupling constant can substantially amplify polarization intensity and induce deviations in the electric vector position angle. These effects may offer observational signatures to distinguish hairy black holes from Schwarzschild black holes.

Stationary Scalar Clouds around Kerr-Newman Black Holes

This study investigates scalar clouds around Kerr-Newman black holes within the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar model. Tachyonic instabilities are identified as the driving mechanism for scalar cloud formation. Employing the spectral method, we numerically compute wave functions and parameter space existence domains for both fundamental and excited scalar cloud modes. Our analysis demonstrates that black hole spin imposes an upper limit on the existence of scalar clouds, with excited modes requiring stronger tachyonic instabilities for their formation. These findings lay the groundwork for exploring the nonlinear dynamics and astrophysical implications of scalar clouds.

Electrical Impedance Tomography Based Closed-loop Tumor Treating Fields in Dynamic Lung Tumors

Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) is a non-invasive anticancer modality that utilizes alternating electric fields to disrupt cancer cell division and growth. While generally well-tolerated with minimal side effects, traditional TTFields therapy for lung tumors faces challenges due to the influence of respiratory motion. We design a novel closed-loop TTFields strategy for lung tumors by incorporating electrical impedance tomography (EIT) for real-time respiratory phase monitoring and dynamic parameter adjustments. Furthermore, we conduct theoretical analysis to evaluate the performance of the proposed method using the lung motion model. Compared to conventional TTFields settings, we observed that variations in the electrical conductivity of lung during different respiratory phases led to a decrease in the average electric field intensity within lung tumors, transitioning from end-expiratory (1.08 V/cm) to end-inspiratory (0.87 V/cm) phases. Utilizing our proposed closed-Loop TTFields approach at the same dose setting (2400 mA, consistent with the traditional TTFields setting), we can achieve a higher and consistent average electric field strength at the tumor site (1.30 V/cm) across different respiratory stages. Our proposed closed-loop TTFields method has the potential to improved lung tumor therapy by mitigating the impact of respiratory motion.

An alternative to purification in CFT

In conformal field theories, in contrast to \emph{adding} some auxiliary states into the bipartite mixed state $ρ_{AB}$ as the usual purifications do, we show a pure entangled state $ψ_{AB}$ can be constructed by \emph{subtracting} the undetectable regions. In this pure state $ψ_{AB}$, the von Neumann entropy $S_{\text{vN}}(A)$ naturally captures quantum entanglement between $A$ and $B$. We verify that $S_{\text{vN}}(A)$ is equal to the entanglement wedge cross-section $E_{W}$ in AdS spacetime, which is conjectured to be the holographic dual of the entanglement of purification. We show such constructed entanglement entropy has a phase transition. The ordinary entanglement entropies of critical and non-critical QFTs are simply limits of the two phases.

Timelike entanglement entropy and $T\bar{T}$ deformation

In a previous work arXiv:1811.07758 about the $T\bar{T}$ deformed CFT$_2$, from the consistency requirement of the entanglement entropy theory, we found that in addition to the usual spacelike entanglement entropy, a timelike entanglement entropy must be introduced and treated equally. Inspired by the recent explicit constructions of the timelike entanglement entropy and its bulk dual, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the timelike and spacelike entanglement entropies in the $T\bar{T}$ deformed finite size system and finite temperature system. The results confirm our prediction that in the finite size system only the timelike entanglement entropy receives a correction, while in the finite temperature system only the usual spacelike entanglement entropy gets a correction. These findings affirm the necessity of a complete measure including both spacelike and timelike entanglement entropies.

Timelike entanglement entropy in dS$_3$/CFT$_2$

In the context of dS$_3$/CFT$_2$, we propose a timelike entanglement entropy defined by the renormalization group flow. This timelike entanglement entropy is calculated in CFT by using the Callan-Symanzik equation. We find an exact match between this entanglement entropy and the length of a timelike geodesic connecting two different spacelike surfaces in dS$_3$.The counterpart of this entanglement entropy in AdS$_3$ is a spacelike one, also induced by RG flow and extends all the way into the bulk of AdS$_3$. As a result, in both AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ and dS$_3$/CFT$_2$, there exist exactly three entanglement entropies, providing precisely sufficient information to reconstruct the three-dimensional bulk geometry.

Interferometric Signatures of Black Holes with Multiple Photon Spheres

It has been reported that the photon ring structure in black hole images produces strong and universal interferometric signatures on long interferometric baselines, holding promise for measuring black hole parameters and testing general relativity. This paper investigates the interferometric signatures of black holes with one or two photon spheres, specifically within the framework of Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar models. Notably, for black holes possessing two photon spheres, interference between light rays orbiting the inner and outer photon spheres manifests as beat signals in the visibility amplitude, deviating from the universal signatures observed in the single-photon sphere case.

Observations of Orbiting Hot Spots around Scalarized Reissner-Nordström Black Holes

This paper investigates the observational signatures of hot spots orbiting scalarized Reissner-Nordström black holes, which have been reported to possess multiple photon spheres. In contrast to the single-photon sphere case, hot spots orbiting black holes with two photon spheres produce additional image tracks in time integrated images capturing a complete orbit of hot spots. Notably, these newly observed patterns manifest as a distinct second-highest peak in temporal magnitudes when observed at low inclination angles. These findings offer promising observational probes for distinguishing black holes with multiple photon spheres from their single-photon sphere counterparts.

Observations of Orbiting Hot Spots around Naked Singularities

Recently, it has been reported that photons can traverse naked singularities in the Janis-Newman-Winicour and Born-Infeld spacetimes when these singularities are appropriately regularized. In this paper, we investigate observational signatures of hot spots orbiting these naked singularities, with a focus on discerning them from black holes. In contrast to Schwarzschild black holes, we unveil the presence of multiple additional image tracks within critical curves in time integrated images capturing a complete orbit of hot spots. Moreover, these new images manifest as a more pronounced second-highest peak in temporal magnitudes when observed at low inclinations.

Scalarized Kerr-Newman Black Holes

In this paper, we construct scalarized rotating black holes within the framework of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar models. These models incorporate non-minimal couplings that can induce tachyonic instabilities, leading to the spontaneous scalarization of Kerr-Newman (KN) black holes. By exploring the domain of existence, we observe that the presence of scalarized KN black holes is suppressed by the black hole spin, with a maximum spin threshold beyond which scalarized solutions cease to exist. Intriguingly, we find that in specific parameter regimes, scalarized KN black holes can exhibit the presence of two unstable and one stable light rings on the equatorial plane, manifesting in both prograde and retrograde directions.

Gravitational Lensing by Born-Infeld Naked Singularities

We examine the gravitational lensing phenomenon caused by photon spheres in the Born-Infeld naked singularity spacetime, where gravity is coupled with Born-Infeld electrodynamics. Specifically, our focus lies on relativistic images originating from a point-like light source generated by strong gravitational lensing near photon spheres, as well as images of a luminous celestial sphere. It shows that Born-Infeld naked singularities consistently exhibit one or two photon spheres, which project onto one or two critical curves on the image plane. Interestingly, we discover that the nonlinearity nature of the Born-Infeld electrodynamics enables photons to traverse the singularity, leading to the emergence of new relativistic images within the innermost critical curve. Furthermore, the presence of two photon spheres doubles the number of relativistic images compared to the scenario with only a single photon sphere. Additionally, the transparency inherent to Born-Infeld naked singularities results in the absence of a central shadow in the images of celestial spheres.

Superradiance Instabilities of Charged Black Holes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar Theory

We study time evolutions of charged scalar perturbations on the background of a charged hairy black hole, in which the perturbations can be governed by a double-peak effective potential. By extracting quasinormal modes from the waveform of scalar perturbations, we discover that some quasinormal modes, which are trapped in a potential well between two potential peaks, can be superradiantly amplified. These superradiant modes make the hairy black hole unstable against charged scalar perturbations. Moreover, it is found that the superradiant modes arise from the competition between the superradiant amplification caused by tunneling through the outer potential barrier and the leakage of modes through the inner potential barrier into the black hole.

Black Holes with Multiple Photon Spheres

Recently, asymptotically-flat black holes with multiple photon spheres have been discovered and found to produce distinctive observational signatures. In this paper, we focus on whether these black hole solutions are physically viable, e.g., satisfying energy conditions of interest. Intriguingly, black hole and naked singularity solutions with two photon spheres and one anti-photon sphere are shown to exist in physically reasonable models, which satisfy the null, weak, dominant and strong energy conditions. Our findings reveal that black holes with multiple photon spheres may not be frequent, but they are not exotic.

Observational Appearance of a Freely-falling Star in an Asymmetric Thin-shell Wormhole

It has been recently reported that, at late times, the total luminosity of a star freely falling in black holes decays exponentially with time, and one or two series of flashes with decreasing intensity are seen by a specific observer, depending on the number of photon spheres. In this paper, we examine observational appearances of an infalling star in a reflection-asymmetric wormhole, which has two photon spheres, one on each side of the wormhole. We find that the late-time total luminosity measured by distant observers gradually decays with time or remains roughly constant due to the absence of the event horizon. Moreover, a specific observer would detect a couple of light flashes in a bright background at late times. These observations would offer a new tool to distinguish wormholes from black holes, even those with multiple photon spheres.

Appearance of an Infalling Star in Black Holes with Multiple Photon Spheres

Photon spheres play a pivotal role in the imaging of luminous objects near black holes. In this paper, we examine observational appearances of a star freely falling in hairy black holes, which can possess one or two photon spheres outside the event horizon. When there exists a single photon sphere, the total luminosity measured by distant observers decreases exponentially with time at late times. Due to successive arrivals of photons orbiting around the photon sphere different times, a specific observer would see a series of light flashes with decreasing intensity, which share a similar frequency content. Whereas in the case with two photon spheres, photons temporarily trapped between the photon spheres can cause a peak of the total luminosity, which is followed by a slow exponential decay, at late times. In addition, these photons lead to one more series of light flashes seen by the specific observer.

Connections between reflected entropies and hyperbolic string vertices

In this paper, we establish connections between reflected entropies of multipartite mixed states in CFT$_{2}$ and hyperbolic string vertices of closed string field theory (CSFT). We show that the reflected surfaces, which are bulk duals of the reflected entropies, share the same Riemann surfaces with the hyperbolic string vertices. This observation enables us to build quantitative relations between the reflected entropies and hyperbolic string vertices. We illustrate the connections with several examples. Consequently, we propose that spacetime structure could be directly generated from the hyperbolic string vertices. The advantage of the hyperbolic string vertices approach is that we have a dynamical equation, the Batalin-Vilkoviski master equation, to control the generating process.

Echoes from Hairy Black Holes

We study the waveforms of time signals produced by scalar perturbations in static hairy black holes, in which the perturbations can be governed by a double-peak effective potential. The inner potential peak would give rise to echoes, which provide a powerful tool to test the Kerr hypothesis. The waveforms are constructed in the time and frequency domains, and we find that the late-time waveforms are determined by the long-lived and sub-long-lived quasinormal modes, which are trapped in the potential valley and near the smaller peak, respectively. When the distance between the peaks is significantly larger than the width of the peaks, a train of decaying echo pulses is produced by the superposition of the long-lived and sub-long-lived modes. In certain cases, the echoes can vanish and then reappear. When the peaks are close enough, one detects far fewer echo signals and a following sinusoid tail, which is controlled by the long-lived or sub-long-lived mode and hence decays very slowly.
