Layer-by-layer growth of bilayer graphene single-crystals enabled by self-transmitting catalytic activity

Direct growth of large-area vertically stacked two-dimensional (2D) van der Waal (vdW) materials is a prerequisite for their high-end applications in integrated electronics, optoelectronics and photovoltaics. Currently, centimetre- to even metre-scale monolayers of single-crystal graphene (MLG) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) have been achieved by epitaxial growth on various single-crystalline substrates. However, in principle, this success in monolayer epitaxy seems extremely difficult to be replicated to bi- or few-layer growth, as the full coverage of the first layer was believed to terminate the reactivity of those adopting catalytic metal surfaces. Here, we report an exceptional layer-by-layer chemical vapour deposition (CVD) growth of large size bi-layer graphene single-crystals, enabled by self-transmitting catalytic activity from platinum (Pt) surfaces to the outermost graphene layers. In-situ growth and real-time surveillance experiments, under well-controlled environments, unambiguously verify that the growth does follow the layer-by-layer mode on open surfaces of MLG/Pt(111). First-principles calculations indicate that the transmittal of catalytic activity is allowed by an appreciable electronic hybridisation between graphene overlayers and Pt surfaces, enabling catalytic dissociation of hydrocarbons and subsequently direct graphitisation of their radicals on the outermost sp2 carbon surface. This self-transmitting catalytic activity is also proven to be robust for tube-furnace CVD in fabricating single-crystalline graphene bi-, tri- and tetra-layers, as well as h-BN few-layers. Our findings offer an exceptional strategy for potential controllable, layer-by-layer and wafer-scale growth of vertically stacked few-layered 2D single crystals.

Twisted Angle-Dependent Work Functions in CVD-Grown Twisted Bilayer Graphene by Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy

Tailoring the interlayer twist angle of bilayer graphene (BLG) has a significant influence on its electronic properties, including superconductivity, topological transitions, ferromagnetic states and correlated insulating states. These exotic electronic properties are sensitively dependent on the work functions of bilayer graphene samples. Here, the twisted angle-dependent work functions of CVD-grown twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) are detailed investigated by Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) in combination with Raman spectra. The thickness-dependent surface potentials of Bernal-stacked multilayer graphene were measured. The AB-BLG and tBLG are directly determined by KPFM due to their twist angle-specific surface potentials. The detailed relationship of twist angles and surface potentials are further obtained by the in-situ combination investigation of KPFM and Raman spectra measurements. The thermal stability of tBLG was further explored through controlled annealing process. Our work provides the twisted angle-dependent surface potentials of tBLG and lays the foundation for further exploring their twist-angle-dependent novel electronic properties.

Chirality locking charge density waves in a chiral crystal

In Weyl semimetals, charge density wave (CDW) order can spontaneously break the chiral symmetry, gap out the Weyl nodes, and drive the material into the axion insulating phase. Investigations have however been limited since CDWs are rarely seen in Weyl semimetals. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we report the discovery of a novel unidirectional CDW order on the (001) surface of chiral crystal CoSi - a unique Weyl semimetal with unconventional chiral fermions. The CDW is incommensurate with both lattice momentum and crystalline symmetry directions, and exhibits an intra unit cell π phase shift in the layer stacking direction. The tunneling spectrum shows a particle-hole asymmetric V-shaped energy gap around the Fermi level that modulates spatially with the CDW wave vector. Combined with first-principle calculations, we identify that the CDW is locked to the crystal chirality and is related by a mirror reflection between the two enantiomers of the chiral crystal. Our findings reveal a novel correlated topological quantum state in chiral CoSi crystals and raise the potential for realizing an axion insulator and exploring the unprecedented physical behaviors of unconventional chiral fermions.

Roton pair density wave and unconventional strong-coupling superconductivity in a topological kagome metal

The transition-metal kagome lattice materials host frustrated, correlated, and topological quantum states of matter. Recently, a new family of vanadium-based kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, and Cs) with topological band structures has been discovered. These layered compounds are nonmagnetic and undergo charge density wave transitions before developing superconductivity at low temperatures. Here we report the observation of unconventional superconductivity and pair density wave (PDW) in CsV3Sb5 using scanning tunneling microscope/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and Josephson STS. We find that CsV3Sb5 exhibits a V-shaped pairing gap Δ~0.5 meV and is a strong-coupling superconductor (2Δ/kBTc~5) that coexists with 4a0 unidirectional and 2a0X2a0 charge order. Remarkably, we discover a 3Q PDW accompanied by bidirectional 4a0/3 spatial modulations of the superconducting gap, coherence peak and gap-depth in the tunneling conductance. We term this novel quantum state a roton-PDW associated with an underlying vortex-antivortex lattice that can account for the observed conductance modulations. Probing the electronic states in the vortex halo in an applied magnetic field, in strong-field that suppresses superconductivity, and in zero-field above Tc reveals that the PDW is a primary state responsible for an emergent pseudogap and intertwined electronic order. Our findings show striking analogies and distinctions to the phenomenology of high-Tc cuprate superconductors, and provide groundwork for understanding the microscopic origin of correlated electronic states and superconductivity in vanadium-based kagome metals.

Scene Synthesis via Uncertainty-Driven Attribute Synchronization

Developing deep neural networks to generate 3D scenes is a fundamental problem in neural synthesis with immediate applications in architectural CAD, computer graphics, as well as in generating virtual robot training environments. This task is challenging because 3D scenes exhibit diverse patterns, ranging from continuous ones, such as object sizes and the relative poses between pairs of shapes, to discrete patterns, such as occurrence and co-occurrence of objects with symmetrical relationships. This paper introduces a novel neural scene synthesis approach that can capture diverse feature patterns of 3D scenes. Our method combines the strength of both neural network-based and conventional scene synthesis approaches. We use the parametric prior distributions learned from training data, which provide uncertainties of object attributes and relative attributes, to regularize the outputs of feed-forward neural models. Moreover, instead of merely predicting a scene layout, our approach predicts an over-complete set of attributes. This methodology allows us to utilize the underlying consistency constraints among the predicted attributes to prune infeasible predictions. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms existing methods considerably. The generated 3D scenes interpolate the training data faithfully while preserving both continuous and discrete feature patterns.

Short-Term Electricity Price Forecasting based on Graph Convolution Network and Attention Mechanism

In electricity markets, locational marginal price (LMP) forecasting is particularly important for market participants in making reasonable bidding strategies, managing potential trading risks, and supporting efficient system planning and operation. Unlike existing methods that only consider LMPs' temporal features, this paper tailors a spectral graph convolutional network (GCN) to greatly improve the accuracy of short-term LMP forecasting. A three-branch network structure is then designed to match the structure of LMPs' compositions. Such kind of network can extract the spatial-temporal features of LMPs, and provide fast and high-quality predictions for all nodes simultaneously. The attention mechanism is also implemented to assign varying importance weights between different nodes and time slots. Case studies based on the IEEE-118 test system and real-world data from the PJM validate that the proposed model outperforms existing forecasting models in accuracy, and maintains a robust performance by avoiding extreme errors.

Evidence of a hidden flux phase in the topological kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

Phase transitions governed by spontaneous time reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) have long been sought in many quantum systems, including materials with anomalous Hall effect (AHE), cuprate high temperature superconductors, Iridates and so on. However, experimentally identifying such a phase transition is extremely challenging because the transition is hidden from many experimental probes. Here, using zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-$μ$SR) technique, we observe strong TRSB signals below 70 K in the newly discovered kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. The TRSB state emerges from the 2 x 2 charge density wave (CDW) phase present below ~ 95 K. By carrying out optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) experiments, we also find that inversion symmetry is maintained in the temperature range of interest. Combining all the experimental results and symmetry constraints, we conclude that the interlayer coupled chiral flux phase (CFP) is the most promising candidate for the TRSB state among all theoretical proposals of orbital current orders. Thus, this prototypical kagome metal CsV3Sb5 can be a platform to establish a TRSB current-ordered state and explore its relationship with CDW, giant AHE, and superconductivity.

Coherent photoproduction of low-$p_{T}$ charmonium in peripheral heavy ion collisions within the color dipole model

We calculate the centrality dependence for coherent photoproduction of very low-$p_{T}$ $J/ψ$ at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies within the impact parameter dependent saturated color dipole model. By using the large equivalent photon fluxes, we present the differential cross section of very low-$p_{T}$ $J/ψ$ produced by coherent photonuclear in peripheral heavy-ion collisions. The numerical results demonstrate that our calculation are agree with $J/ψ$ data in peripheral heavy ion collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energies.

Anisotropic superconducting properties of Kagome metal CsV3Sb5

We systematically measure the superconducting (SC) and mixed state properties of high-quality CsV3Sb5 single crystals with Tc ~ 3.5 K. We find that the upper critical field Hc2(T) exhibits a large anisotropic ratio of Hc2^(ab)/Hc2^(c) ~ 9 at zero temperature and fitting its temperature dependence requires a minimum two-band effective model. Moreover, the ratio of the lower critical field, Hc1^(ab)/Hc1^(c), is also found to be larger than 1, which indicates that the in-plane energy dispersion is strongly renormalized near Fermi energy. Both Hc1(T) and SC diamagnetic signal are found to change little initially below Tc ~ 3.5 K and then to increase abruptly upon cooling to a characteristic temperature of ~2.8 K. Furthermore, we identify a two-fold anisotropy of in-plane angular-dependent magnetoresistance in the mixed state. Interestingly, we find that, below the same characteristic T ~ 2.8 K, the orientation of this two-fold anisotropy displays a peculiar twist by an angle of 60o characteristic of the Kagome geometry. Our results suggest an intriguing superconducting state emerging in the complex environment of Kagome lattice, which, at least, is partially driven by electron-electron correlation.

Distinctive momentum dependent charge-density-wave gap observed in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ superconductor with topological Kagome lattice

CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ is a newly discovered Kagome superconductor that attracts great interest due to its topological nontrivial band structure and the coexistence of superconductivity and charge-density-wave (CDW) with many exotic properties. Here, we report the detailed characterization of the CDW gap in high-quality CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ single crystals using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find that the CDW gap is strongly momentum dependent. While gapped around the $M$ point, the electronic states remain gapless around the $Γ$ point and along the $Γ$-$K$ direction. Such momentum dependence indicates that the CDW is driven by the scattering of electrons between neighboring $M$ points, where the band structure hosts multiple saddle points and the density of state diverges near the Fermi level. Our observations of the partially gapped Fermi surface and strongly momentum-dependent CDW gap not only provide a foundation for uncovering the mechanism of CDW in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, but also shed light on the understanding of how the CDW coexists with superconductivity in this topological Kagome superconductor.

H3DNet: 3D Object Detection Using Hybrid Geometric Primitives

We introduce H3DNet, which takes a colorless 3D point cloud as input and outputs a collection of oriented object bounding boxes (or BB) and their semantic labels. The critical idea of H3DNet is to predict a hybrid set of geometric primitives, i.e., BB centers, BB face centers, and BB edge centers. We show how to convert the predicted geometric primitives into object proposals by defining a distance function between an object and the geometric primitives. This distance function enables continuous optimization of object proposals, and its local minimums provide high-fidelity object proposals. H3DNet then utilizes a matching and refinement module to classify object proposals into detected objects and fine-tune the geometric parameters of the detected objects. The hybrid set of geometric primitives not only provides more accurate signals for object detection than using a single type of geometric primitives, but it also provides an overcomplete set of constraints on the resulting 3D layout. Therefore, H3DNet can tolerate outliers in predicted geometric primitives. Our model achieves state-of-the-art 3D detection results on two large datasets with real 3D scans, ScanNet and SUN RGB-D.

Localized spin-orbit polaron in magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$

The kagome lattice Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ exhibits the quintessential topological phenomena of a magnetic Weyl semimetal such as the chiral anomaly and Fermi-arc surface states. Probing its magnetic properties is crucial for understanding this correlated topological state. Here, using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S), we report the discovery of localized spin-orbit polarons (SOPs) with three-fold rotation symmetry nucleated around single-S vacancies in Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. The SOPs carry a spin-polarized magnetic moment and a large orbital magnetization of a topological origin associated with the Berry phase and the persistent circulating current. Appreciable magneto-elastic coupling of the SOP is detected by atomic force microscope and STM. Our findings suggest that the SOPs can enhance magnetism and stability of the magnetic Weyl nodes for more robust time-reversal-symmetry-breaking topological phenomena. Controlled engineering of the SOPs may pave the way toward practical applications in functional quantum devices.

Cyclone intensity estimate with context-aware cyclegan

Deep learning approaches to cyclone intensity estimationhave recently shown promising results. However, sufferingfrom the extreme scarcity of cyclone data on specific in-tensity, most existing deep learning methods fail to achievesatisfactory performance on cyclone intensity estimation, especially on classes with few instances. To avoid the degra-dation of recognition performance caused by scarce samples,we propose a context-aware CycleGAN which learns the la-tent evolution features from adjacent cyclone intensity andsynthesizes CNN features of classes lacking samples fromunpaired source classes. Specifically, our approach synthe-sizes features conditioned on the learned evolution features, while the extra information is not required. Experimentalresults of several evaluation methods show the effectivenessof our approach, even can predicting unseen classes.

Prey selection of Amur tigers in relation to the spatiotemporal overlap with prey across the Sino-Russian border

The endangered Amur tiger is confined primarily to a narrow area along the border with Russia in Northeast China. Little is known about the foraging strategies of this small subpopulation in Hunchun Nature Reserve on the Chinese side of the border; at this location, the prey base and land use patterns are distinctly different from those in the larger population of the Sikhote-Alin Mountains of Russia. Using dietary analysis of scats and camera-trapping data from Hunchun Nature Reserve, we assessed spatiotemporal overlap of tigers and their prey and identified prey selection patterns to enhance understanding of the ecological requirements of tigers in Northeast China. Results indicated that wild prey constituted 94.9% of the total biomass consumed by tigers; domestic livestock represented 5.1% of the diet. Two species, wild boar and sika deer , collectively represented 83% of the biomass consumed by tigers. Despite lower spatial overlap of tigers and wild boar compared to tigers and sika deer, tigers preferentially preyed on boar, likely facilitated by high temporal overlap in activity patterns. Tigers exhibit significant spatial overlap with sika deer, likely favoring a high level of tiger predation on this large-sized ungulate. However, tigers did not preferred roe deer (Capreolus pygargus) and showed a low spatial overlap with roe deer. Overall, our results suggest that tiger prey selection is determined by prey body size and also overlap in tiger and prey use of time or space. Also, we suggest that strategies designed to minimize livestock forays into forested lands may be important for decreasing the livestock depredation by tigers. This study offers a framework to simultaneously integrate food habit analysis with the distribution of predators and prey through time and space to provide a comprehensive understanding of foraging strategies of large carnivores.

Convolutional Neural Network-Based Block Up-sampling for Intra Frame Coding

Inspired by the recent advances of image super-resolution using convolutional neural network (CNN), we propose a CNN-based block up-sampling scheme for intra frame coding. A block can be down-sampled before being compressed by normal intra coding, and then up-sampled to its original resolution. Different from previous studies on down/up-sampling-based coding, the up-sampling methods in our scheme have been designed by training CNN instead of hand-crafted. We explore a new CNN structure for up-sampling, which features deconvolution of feature maps, multi-scale fusion, and residue learning, making the network both compact and efficient. We also design different networks for the up-sampling of luma and chroma components, respectively, where the chroma up-sampling CNN utilizes the luma information to boost its performance. In addition, we design a two-stage up-sampling process, the first stage being within the block-by-block coding loop, and the second stage being performed on the entire frame, so as to refine block boundaries. We also empirically study how to set the coding parameters of down-sampled blocks for pursuing the frame-level rate-distortion optimization. Our proposed scheme is implemented into the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) reference software, and a comprehensive set of experiments have been performed to evaluate our methods. Experimental results show that our scheme achieves significant bits saving compared with HEVC anchor especially at low bit rates, leading to on average 5.5% BD-rate reduction on common test sequences and on average 9.0% BD-rate reduction on ultra high definition (UHD) test sequences.

Co-projection-plane based 3-D padding for polyhedron projection for 360-degree video

The polyhedron projection for 360-degree video is becoming more and more popular since it can lead to much less geometry distortion compared with the equirectangular projection. However, in the polyhedron projection, we can observe very obvious texture discontinuity in the area near the face boundary. Such a texture discontinuity may lead to serious quality degradation when motion compensation crosses the discontinuous face boundary. To solve this problem, in this paper, we first propose to fill the corresponding neighboring faces in the suitable positions as the extension of the current face to keep approximated texture continuity. Then a co-projection-plane based 3-D padding method is proposed to project the reference pixels in the neighboring face to the current face to guarantee exact texture continuity. Under the proposed scheme, the reference pixel is always projected to the same plane with the current pixel when performing motion compensation so that the texture discontinuity problem can be solved. The proposed scheme is implemented in the reference software of High Efficiency Video Coding. Compared with the existing method, the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the rate-distortion performance. The experimental results obviously demonstrate that the texture discontinuity in the face boundary can be well handled by the proposed algorithm.

An Efficient Four-Parameter Affine Motion Model for Video Coding

In this paper, we study a simplified affine motion model based coding framework to overcome the limitation of translational motion model and maintain low computational complexity. The proposed framework mainly has three key contributions. First, we propose to reduce the number of affine motion parameters from 6 to 4. The proposed four-parameter affine motion model can not only handle most of the complex motions in natural videos but also save the bits for two parameters. Second, to efficiently encode the affine motion parameters, we propose two motion prediction modes, i.e., advanced affine motion vector prediction combined with a gradient-based fast affine motion estimation algorithm and affine model merge, where the latter attempts to reuse the affine motion parameters (instead of the motion vectors) of neighboring blocks. Third, we propose two fast affine motion compensation algorithms. One is the one-step sub-pixel interpolation, which reduces the computations of each interpolation. The other is the interpolation-precision-based adaptive block size motion compensation, which performs motion compensation at the block level rather than the pixel level to reduce the interpolation times. Our proposed techniques have been implemented based on the state-of-the-art high efficiency video coding standard, and the experimental results show that the proposed techniques altogether achieve on average 11.1% and 19.3% bits saving for random access and low delay configurations, respectively, on typical video sequences that have rich rotation or zooming motions. Meanwhile, the computational complexity increases of both encoder and decoder are within an acceptable range.

Experimental observation of topological Fermi arcs in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2

Weyl semimetal is a new quantum state of matter [1-12] hosting the condensed matter physics counterpart of relativisticWeyl fermion [13] originally introduced in high energy physics. The Weyl semimetal realized in the TaAs class features multiple Fermi arcs arising from topological surface states [10, 11, 14-16] and exhibits novel quantum phenomena, e.g., chiral anomaly induced negative mag-netoresistance [17-19] and possibly emergent supersymmetry [20]. Recently it was proposed theoretically that a new type (type-II) of Weyl fermion [21], which does not have counterpart in high energy physics due to the breaking of Lorentz invariance, can emerge as topologically-protected touching between electron and hole pockets. Here, we report direct spectroscopic evidence of topological Fermi arcs in the predicted type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2 [22-24]. The topological surface states are confirmed by directly observing the surface states using bulk-and surface-sensitive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and the quasi-particle interference (QPI) pattern between the two putative Fermi arcs in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Our work establishes MoTe2 as the first experimental realization of type-II Weyl semimetal, and opens up new opportunities for probing novel phenomena such as exotic magneto-transport [21] in type-II Weyl semimetals.
