Vehicle as a Service (VaaS): Leverage Vehicles to Build Service Networks and Capabilities for Smart Cities

Smart cities demand resources for rich immersive sensing, ubiquitous communications, powerful computing, large storage, and high intelligence (SCCSI) to support various kinds of applications, such as public safety, connected and autonomous driving, smart and connected health, and smart living. At the same time, it is widely recognized that vehicles such as autonomous cars, equipped with significantly powerful SCCSI capabilities, will become ubiquitous in future smart cities. By observing the convergence of these two trends, this article advocates the use of vehicles to build a cost-effective service network, called the Vehicle as a Service (VaaS) paradigm, where vehicles empowered with SCCSI capability form a web of mobile servers and communicators to provide SCCSI services in smart cities. Towards this direction, we first examine the potential use cases in smart cities and possible upgrades required for the transition from traditional vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) to VaaS. Then, we will introduce the system architecture of the VaaS paradigm and discuss how it can provide SCCSI services in future smart cities, respectively. At last, we identify the open problems of this paradigm and future research directions, including architectural design, service provisioning, incentive design, and security & privacy. We expect that this paper paves the way towards developing a cost-effective and sustainable approach for building smart cities.

Social-Mobility-Aware Joint Communication and Computation Resource Management in NOMA-Enabled Vehicular Networks

The existing computation and communication (2C) optimization schemes for vehicular edge computing (VEC) networks mainly focus on the physical domain without considering the influence from the social domain. This may greatly limit the potential of task offloading, making it difficult to fully boom the task offloading rate with given power, resulting in low energy efficiency (EE). To address the issue, this letter devotes itself to investigate social-mobility-aware VEC framework and proposes a novel EE-oriented 2C assignment scheme. In doing so, we assume that the task vehicular user (T-VU) can offload computation tasks to the service vehicular user (S-VU) and the road side unit (RSU) by non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). An optimization problem is formulated to jointly assign the 2C resources to maximize the system EE, which turns out to be a mixed integer non-convex objective function. To solve the problem, we transform it into separated computation and communication resource allocation subproblems. Dealing with the first subproblem, we propose a social-mobility-aware edge server selection and task splitting algorithm (SM-SSTSA) to achieve edge server selection and task splitting. Then, by solving the second subproblem, the power allocation and spectrum assignment solutions are obtained utilizing a tightening lower bound method and a Kuhn-Munkres algorithm. Finally, we solve the original problem through an iterative method. Simulation results demonstrate the superior EE performance of the proposed scheme.

Spectrum-aware Multi-hop Task Routing in Vehicle-assisted Collaborative Edge Computing

Multi-access edge computing (MEC) is a promising technology to enhance the quality of service, particularly for low-latency services, by enabling computing offloading to edge servers (ESs) in close proximity. To avoid network congestion, collaborative edge computing has become an emerging paradigm to enable different ESs to collaboratively share their data and computation resources. However, most papers in collaborative edge computing only allow one-hop offloading, which may limit computing resource sharing due to either poor channel conditions or computing workload at ESs one-hop away. By allowing ESs multi-hop away to also share the computing workload, a multi-hop MEC enables more ESs to share their computing resources. Inspired by this observation, in this paper, we propose to leverage omnipresent vehicles in a city to form a data transportation network for task delivery in a multi-hop fashion. Here, we propose a general multi-hop task offloading framework for vehicle-assisted MEC where tasks from users can be offloaded to powerful ESs via potentially multi-hop transmissions. Under the proposed framework, we develop a reinforcement learning based task offloading approach to address the curse of dimensionality problem due to vehicular mobility and channel variability, with the goal to maximize the aggregated service throughput under constraints on end-to-end latency, spectrum, and computing resources. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves excellent performance with low complexity and outperforms existing benchmark schemes.

Vehicular Behavior-Aware Beamforming Design for Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

Communication and sensing are two important features of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). In traditional vehicle-mounted devices, communication and sensing modules exist but in an isolated way, resulting in a waste of hardware resources and wireless spectrum. In this paper, to cope with the above inefficiency, we propose a vehicular behavior-aware integrated sensing and communication (VBA-ISAC) beamforming design for the vehicle-mounted transmitter with multiple antennas. In this work, beams are steered based on vehicular behaviors to assist driving and meanwhile provide spectral-efficient uplink data services with the help of a roadside unit (RSU). Specifically, we first predict the area of interest (AoI) to be sensed based on the vehicles' trajectories. Then, we formulate a VBA-ISAC beamforming design problem to sense the AoI while maximizing the spectral efficiency of uplink communications, where a trade-off factor is introduced to balance the communication and sensing performance. A semi-definite relaxation-based beampattern mismatch minimization (SDR-BMM) algorithm is proposed to solve the formulated problem. To reduce the hardware cost and power consumption, we further improve the proposed VBA-ISAC beamforming design by introducing the hybrid analog-digital (HAD) structure. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of VBA-ISAC scheme and show that the proposed beamforming design outperforms the benchmarks in both spectral efficiency and radar beampattern.

Federated Radio Frequency Fingerprinting with Model Transfer and Adaptation

The Radio frequency (RF) fingerprinting technique makes highly secure device authentication possible for future networks by exploiting hardware imperfections introduced during manufacturing. Although this technique has received considerable attention over the past few years, RF fingerprinting still faces great challenges of channel-variation-induced data distribution drifts between the training phase and the test phase. To address this fundamental challenge and support model training and testing at the edge, we propose a federated RF fingerprinting algorithm with a novel strategy called model transfer and adaptation (MTA). The proposed algorithm introduces dense connectivity among convolutional layers into RF fingerprinting to enhance learning accuracy and reduce model complexity. Besides, we implement the proposed algorithm in the context of federated learning, making our algorithm communication efficient and privacy-preserved. To further conquer the data mismatch challenge, we transfer the learned model from one channel condition and adapt it to other channel conditions with only a limited amount of information, leading to highly accurate predictions under environmental drifts. Experimental results on real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is model-agnostic and also signal-irrelevant. Compared with state-of-the-art RF fingerprinting algorithms, our algorithm can improve prediction performance considerably with a performance gain of up to 15\%.

Cooperative Beamforming Design for Multiple RIS-Assisted Communication Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) provides a promising way to build programmable wireless transmission environments. Owing to the massive number of controllable reflecting elements on the surface, RIS is capable of providing considerable passive beamforming gains. At present, most related works mainly consider the modeling, design, performance analysis and optimization of single-RIS-assisted systems. Although there are a few of works that investigate multiple RISs individually serving their associated users, the cooperation among multiple RISs is not well considered as yet. To fill the gap, this paper studies a cooperative beamforming design for multi-RIS-assisted communication systems, where multiple RISs are deployed to assist the downlink communications from a base station to its users. To do so, we first model the general channel from the base station to the users for arbitrary number of reflection links. Then, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the sum rate of all users. Analysis shows that the formulated problem is difficult to solve due to its non-convexity and the interactions among the decision variables. To solve it effectively, we first decouple the problem into three disjoint subproblems. Then, by introducing appropriate auxiliary variables, we derive the closed-form expressions for the decision variables and propose a low-complexity cooperative beamforming algorithm. Simulation results have verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm through comparison with various baseline methods. Furthermore, these results also unveil that, for the sum rate maximization, distributing the reflecting elements among multiple RISs is superior to deploying them at one single RIS.

Robust Beamforming and Rate-Splitting Design for Next Generation Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications

The next generation ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (xURLLC) need novel design to provide satisfactory services to the emerging mission-critical applications. To improve the spectrum efficiency and enhance the robustness of xURLLC, this paper proposes a robust beamforming and rate-splitting design in the finite blocklength (FBL) regime for downlink multi-user multi-antenna xURLLC systems. In the design, adaptive rate-splitting is introduced to flexibly handle the complex inter-user interference and thus improve the spectrum efficiency. Taking the imperfection of the channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) into consideration, a max-min user rate problem is formulated to optimize the common and private beamforming vectors and the rate-splitting vector under the premise of ensuring the requirements of transmission latency and reliability of all the users. The optimization problem is intractable due to the non-convexity of the constraint set and the infinite constraints caused by CSIT uncertainties. To solve it, we convert the infinite constraints into finite ones by the S-Procedure method and transform the original problem into a difference of convex (DC) programming. A constrained concave convex procedure (CCCP) and the Gaussian randomization based iterative algorithm is proposed to obtain a local minimum. Simulation results confirm the convergence, robustness and effectiveness of the proposed robust beamforming and rate-splitting design in the FBL regime. It is also shown that the proposed robust design achieves considerable performance gain in the worst user rate compared with existing transmission schemes under various blocklength and block error rate requirements.

Joint Beamforming and Reflecting Design in Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Multi-User Communication Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) provides a promising way to build the programmable wireless transmission environments in the future. Owing to the large number of reflecting elements used at the RIS, joint optimization for the active beamforming at the transmitter and the passive reflector at the RIS is usually complicated and time-consuming. To address this problem, this paper proposes a low-complexity joint beamforming and reflecting algorithm based on fractional programing (FP). Specifically, we first consider a RIS-aided multi-user communication system with perfect channel state information (CSI) and formulate an optimization problem to maximize the sum rate of all users. Since the problem is nonconvex, we decompose the original problem into three disjoint subproblems. By introducing favorable auxiliary variables, we derive the closed-form expressions of the beamforming vectors and reflecting matrix in each subproblem, leading to a joint beamforming and reflecting algorithm with low complexity. We then extend our approach to handle the case when transmitter-RIS and RIS-receiver channels are not perfect and develop corresponding low-complexity joint beamforming and reflecting algorithm with practical channel estimation. Simulation results have verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms as compared to various benchmark schemes.

Differential Reflecting Modulation for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Based Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) based communications have emerged as a new paradigm. This letter proposes a differential reflecting modulation (DRM) scheme for RIS based communication systems. In DRM, information bits are jointly carried by the activation permutations of the reflecting patterns and the phases of the transmitted signals, leading to that DRM can work without any channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter, RIS or receiver. In other words, DRM can release the intricate and resource-consuming channel estimation in the transmission process. Simulation results show that the proposed DRM pays an acceptable SNR penalty compared to non-differential modulation with coherent detection.

Signal Shaping for Non-Uniform Beamspace Modulated mmWave Hybrid MIMO Communications

This paper investigates adaptive signal shaping methods for millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications based on the maximizing the minimum Euclidean distance (MMED) criterion. In this work, we utilize the indices of analog precoders to carry information and optimize the symbol vector sets used for each analog precoder activation state. Specifically, we firstly propose a joint optimization based signal shaping (JOSS) approach, in which the symbol vector sets used for all analog precoder activation states are jointly optimized by solving a series of quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problems. JOSS exhibits good performance, however, with a high computational complexity. To reduce the computational complexity, we then propose a full precoding based signal shaping (FPSS) method and a diagonal precoding based signal shaping (DPSS) method, where the full or diagonal digital precoders for all analog precoder activation states are optimized by solving two small-scale QCQP problems. Simulation results show that the proposed signal shaping methods can provide considerable performance gain in reliability in comparison with existing mmWave transmission solutions.

Reflecting Modulation

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a promising technique for future wireless communication networks. How to reliably transmit information in a RIS-based communication system arouses much interest. This paper proposes a reflecting modulation (RM) scheme for RIS-based communications, where both the reflecting patterns and transmit signals can carry information. Depending on that the transmitter and RIS jointly or independently deliver information, RM is further classified into two categories: jointly mapped RM (JRM) and separately mapped RM (SRM). JRM and SRM are naturally superior to existing schemes, because the transmit signal vectors, reflecting patterns, and bit mapping methods of JRM and SRM are more flexibly designed. To enhance transmission reliability, this paper proposes a discrete optimization-based joint signal mapping, shaping, and reflecting (DJMSR) design for JRM and SRM to minimize the bit error rate (BER) with a given transmit signal candidate set and a given reflecting pattern candidate set. To further improve the performance, this paper optimizes multiple reflecting patterns and their associated transmit signal sets in continuous fields for JRM and SRM. Numerical results show that JRM and SRM with the proposed system optimization methods considerably outperform existing schemes in BER.

Optimizing IoT Energy Efficiency on Edge (EEE): a Cross-layer Design in a Cognitive Mesh Network

Battery-powered wireless IoT devices are now widely seen in many critical applications. Given the limited battery capacity and inaccessibility to external power recharge, optimizing energy efficiency (EE) plays a vital role in prolonging the lifetime of these IoT devices. However, a sheer amount of existing works only focus on the EE design at the infrastructure level such as base stations (BSs) but with little attention to the EE design at the device level. In this paper, we propose a novel idea that aims to shift energy consumption to a grid-powered cognitive radio mesh network thus preserving energy of battery-powered devices. Under this line of thinking, we cast the design into a cross-layer optimization problem with an objective to maximize devices' energy efficiency. To solve this problem, we propose a parametric transformation technique to convert the original problem into a more tractable one. A baseline scheme is used to demonstrate the advantage of our design. We also carry out extensive simulations to exhibit the optimality of our proposed algorithms and the network performance under various settings.

MIMO Capacity with Reduced RF Chains

This paper presents a remarkable advance for the understanding of MIMO capacity limits with insufficient RF chains. The capacity is characterized by the maximum mutual information given any vector inputs subject to not only an average power constraint but also a sparsity constraint. It is proven that the Gaussian mixture input distribution is capacity-achieving in the high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regime. The optimal mixture coefficients and the covariance matrices of the Gaussian mixtures are derived and also the corresponding achievable capacity. For the special case with a single RF chain, the optimal mixture coefficients are shown to be approximately proportional to channel gains. The capacity is approximately the maximum-ratio combining (MRC) of multiple channels in the high SNR regime. We investigate the superiority of capacity-achieving techniques: Non-Uniform Spatial Modulation (NUSM) and Non-Uniform Beamspace Modulation (NUBM) by comparing them with the best antenna/beamspace selection (BAS/BBS) and the uniform spatial/beamspace modulation (USM/UBM). The comparison results reveal that the information-guided NUSM/NUBM is optimal in the high SNR regime. Numerical results are presented to validate our analysis.

Signal Shaping for Generalized Spatial Modulation and Generalized Quadrature Spatial Modulation

This paper investigates generic signal shaping methods for multiple-data-stream generalized spatial modulation (GenSM) and generalized quadrature spatial modulation (GenQSM) based on the maximizing the minimum Euclidean distance (MMED) criterion. Three cases with different channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) are considered, including no CSIT, statistical CSIT and perfect CSIT. A unified optimization problem is formulated to find the optimal transmit vector set under size, power and sparsity constraints. We propose an optimization-based signal shaping (OBSS) approach by solving the formulated problem directly and a codebook-based signal shaping (CBSS) approach by finding sub-optimal solutions in discrete space. In the OBSS approach, we reformulate the original problem to optimize the signal constellations used for each transmit antenna combination (TAC). Both the size and entry of all signal constellations are optimized. Specifically, we suggest the use of a recursive design for size optimization. The entry optimization is formulated as a non-convex large-scale quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problem and can be solved by existing optimization techniques with rather high complexity. To reduce the complexity, we propose the CBSS approach using a codebook generated by quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) symbols and a low-complexity selection algorithm to choose the optimal transmit vector set. Simulation results show that the OBSS approach exhibits the optimal performance in comparison with existing benchmarks. However, the OBSS approach is impractical for large-size signal shaping and adaptive signal shaping with instantaneous CSIT due to the demand of high computational complexity. As a low-complexity approach, CBSS shows comparable performance and can be easily implemented in large-size systems.

Generalized Beamspace Modulation Using Multiplexing: A Breakthrough in mmWave MIMO

Spatial multiplexing (SMX) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) over the best beamspace was considered as the best solution for millimeter wave (mmWave) communications regarding spectral efficiency (SE), referred as the best beamspace selection (BBS) solution. The equivalent MIMO water-filling (WF-MIMO) channel capacity was treated as an unsurpassed SE upper bound. Recently, researchers have proposed various schemes trying to approach the benchmark and the performance bound. But, are they the real limit of mmWave MIMO systems with reduced radio-frequency (RF) chains? In this paper, we challenge the benchmark and the corresponding bound by proposing a better transmission scheme that achieves higher SE, namely the Generalized Beamspace Modulation using Multiplexing (GBMM). Inspired by the concept of spatial modulation, besides the selected beamspace, the selection operation is used to carry information. We prove that GBMM is superior to BBS in terms of SE and can break through the well known `upper bound'. That is, GBMM renews the upper bound of the SE. We investigate SE-oriented precoder activation probability optimization, fully-digital precoder design, optimal power allocation and hybrid precoder design for GBMM. A gradient ascent algorithm is developed to find the optimal solution, which is applicable in all signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regimes. The best solution is derived in the high SNR regime. Additionally, we investigate the hybrid receiver design and deduce the minimum number of receive RF chains configured to gain from GBMM in achievable SE. We propose a coding approach to realize the optimized precoder activation. An extension to mmWave broadband communications is also discussed. Comparisons with the benchmark (i.e., WF-MIMO channel capacity) are made under different system configurations to show the superiority of GBMM.

Secure Transmission and Self-Energy Recycling for Wireless-Powered Relay Systems with Partial Eavesdropper Channel State Information

This paper focuses on the secure transmission of wireless-powered relay systems with imperfect eavesdropper channel state information (ECSI). For efficient energy transfer and information relaying, a novel two-phase protocol is proposed, in which the relay operates in full-duplex (FD) mode to achieve simultaneous wireless power and information transmission. Compared with those existing protocols, the proposed design possesses two main advantages: 1) it fully exploits the available hardware resource (antenna element) of relay and can offer higher secrecy rate; 2) it enables self-energy recycling (S-ER) at relay, in which the loopback interference (LI) generated by FD operation is harvested and reused for information relaying. To maximize the worst-case secrecy rate (WCSR) through jointly designing the source and relay beamformers coupled with the power allocation ratio, an optimization problem is formulated. This formulated problem is proved to be non-convex and the challenge to solve it is how to concurrently solve out the beamformers and the power allocation ratio. To cope with this difficulty, an alternative approach is proposed by converting the original problem into three subproblems. By solving these subproblems iteratively, the closed form solutions of robust beamformers and power allocation ratio for the original problem are achieved. Simulations are done and results reveal that the proposed S-ER based secure transmission scheme outperforms the traditional time-switching based relaying (TSR) scheme at a maximum WCSR gain of 80%.Results also demonstrate that the WCSR performance of the scheme reusing idle antennas for information reception is much better than that of schemes exploiting only one receive antenna.

Asymptotic normality of Laplacian coefficients of graphs

Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices and let $$C(G;x)=\sum_{k=0}^n(-1)^{n-k}c(G,k)x^k$$ denote the Laplacian characteristic polynomial of $G$. Then if the size $|E(G)|$ is large compared to the maximum degree $Δ(G)$, Laplacian coefficients $c(G,k)$ are approximately normally distributed (by central and local limit theorems). We show that Laplacian coefficients of the paths, the cycles, the stars, the wheels and regular graphs of degree $d$ are approximately normally distributed respectively. We also point out that Laplacian coefficients of the complete graphs and the complete bipartite graphs are approximately Poisson distributed respectively.

Uplink Achievable Rate for Massive MIMO with Low-Resolution ADC

In this letter, we derive an approximate analytical expression for the uplink achievable rate of a massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) antenna system when finite precision analog-digital converters (ADCs) and the common maximal ratio combining technique are used at the receivers. To obtain this expression, we treat quantization noise as an additive quantization noise model. Considering the obtained expression, we show that low-resolution ADCs lead to a decrease in the achievable rate but the performance loss can be compensated by increasing the number of receiving antennas. In addition, we investigate the relation between the number of antennas and the ADC resolution, as well as the power-scaling law. These discussions support the feasibility of equipping highly economical ADCs with low resolution in practical massive MIMO systems.
