Proposal of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism using broadband free-electron lasers

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) have been widely used for applications such as X-ray crystallography and magnetic spin probes because of their unprecedented performance. Recently, time-resolved X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) with ultrafast XFEL pulses made it possible to achieve an instantaneous view of atomic de-excitation. However, owing to the narrow bandwidth and coherence of XFEL, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and XMCD are time- and effort-consuming for both machine scientists and users of XFELs. In this work, an efficient scheme using a broadband XFEL pulse and single-shot X-ray spectrometer is proposed, in which the XAS and XMCD measurements can be accomplished with the same machine condition. An evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithm is used to maximize the XFEL bandwidth offered by the Shanghai soft X-ray FEL user facility without additional hardware. A numerical example using MnO is demonstrated, showing that using approximately 1000 consecutive XFEL shots with a central photon energy of 650 eV and full bandwidth of 4.4%, precise spectral measurements for XAS and XMCD can be achieved. Additional considerations related to single-shot XAS and XMCD are discussed.

Generation of large-bandwidth x-ray free electron laser with Evolutionary Many-Objective Optimization Algorithm

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) are cutting-edge scientific instruments for a wide range of disciplines. Conventionally, the narrow bandwidth is pursued in an XFEL. However, in recent years, the large-bandwidth XFEL operation schemes are proposed for X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, in which over-compression is a promising scheme to produce broad-bandwidth XFEL pulses through increasing the electron beam energy chirp. In this paper, combining with the beam yaw correction to overcome the transverse slice misalignment caused by the coherent synchrotron radiation, finding out the over-compression working point of the linac is treated as a many-objective (having four or more objectives) optimization problem, thus the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm III is applied to the beam dynamic optimization for the first time. Start-to-end simulations demonstrate a full bandwidth of 4.6% for Shanghai soft x-ray free-electron laser user facility.

Gain-guided X-ray free-electron laser oscillator

The X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO) has recently been reconsidered a promising candidate for producing high-brightness, fully coherent pulses in the hard X-ray regime. This letter proposes a gain-guided XFELO scheme, avoiding the external focusing elements required for conventional configuration. Self-consistent theoretical analysis and three-dimensional numerical simulation results verify that the X-ray transverse mode in such an "unstable" cavity is stable and robust due to electron beam gain-guiding. This scheme is capable of generating 14.3 keV photons of FEL radiation with peak power on the order of a gigawatt using Shanghai coherent light source parameters. The output pulse energy and transverse and longitudinal coherence are comparable with those from conventional XFELOs. This promising scheme is expected to contribute significantly to the construction and operation of a real XFELO.

Atomic inner-shell radiation seeded free-electron lasers

In order to effectively improve the output quality of X-ray free electron laser (XFEL), we theoretically propose an XFEL scheme seeded by atomic inner-shell laser. As well known, an atomic inner-shell laser based on neutral atoms and pumped by an XFEL has been experimentally demonstrated, which produced sub-femtosecond X-ray pulses with increased temporal coherence. It shows that, by using the inner-shell laser as a seed to modulate the electron bunch, very stable and almost fully-coherent short-wavelength XFEL pulses can be generated. The proposed scheme holds promising prospects in X-ray wavelengths, and even shorter.

High brightness fully coherent X-ray amplifier seeded by a free-electron laser oscillator

X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO) is expected to be a cutting edge tool for fully coherent X-ray laser generation, and undulator taper technique is well-known for considerably increasing the efficiency of free-electron lasers (FELs). In order to combine the advantages of these two schemes, FEL amplifier seeded by XFELO is proposed by simply using a chirped electron beam. With the right choice of the beam parameters, the bunch tail is within the gain bandwidth of XFELO, and lase to saturation, which will be served as a seeding for further amplification. Meanwhile, the bunch head which is outside the gain bandwidth of XFELO, is preserved and used in the following FEL amplifier. It is found that the natural "double-horn" beam current as well as residual energy chirp from chicane compressor are quite suitable for the new scheme. Inheriting the advantages from XFELO seeding and undulator tapering, it is feasible to generate nearly terawatt level, fully coherent X-ray pulses with unprecedented shot-to-shot stability, which might open up new scientific opportunities in various research fields.

Systematical design and three-dimensional simulation of X-ray FEL oscillator for Shanghai Coherent Light Facility

Shanghai Coherent Light Facility (SCLF) is a quasi-CW hard X-ray free electron laser user facility which is recently proposed. Due to the high repetition rate, high quality electron beams, it is straightforward to consider an X-ray free electron laser oscillator (XFELO) operation for SCLF. The main processes for XFELO design, and parameters optimization of the undulator, X-ray cavity and electron beam are described. The first three-dimensional X-ray crystal Bragg diffraction code, named BRIGHT is built, which collaborates closely with GENESIS and OPC for numerical simulations of XFELO. The XFELO performances of SCLF is investigated and optimized by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation.

Design of a Nondestructive Two-in-One Instrument for Measuring the Polarization and Energy Spectrum at an X-ray FEL Facility

The free electron laser (FEL), as a next-generation light source, is an attractive tool in scientific frontier research because of its advantages of full coherence, ultra-short pulse duration, and controllable polarization. Owing to the demand of real-time bunch diagnosis during FEL experiments, precise nondestructive measurements of the polarization and X-ray energy spectrum using one instrument are preferred. In this paper, such an instrument based on the electron time-of-flight technique is proposed. By considering the complexity and nonlinearity, a numerical model in the framework of Geant4 has been developed for optimization. Taking the Shanghai Soft X-ray FEL user facility as an example, its measurement performances' dependencies on the critical parameters were studied systematically, and, finally, an optimal design was obtained, achieving resolutions of 0.5% for the polarization degree and 0.3 eV for the X-ray energy spectrum.

Bandwidth broadening of X-ray free electron laser with the natural gradient of planar undulator

Besides the target to pursue the narrow bandwidth X-ray pulses, the large bandwidth free-electron laser pulses are also strongly demanded to satisfy a wide range of scientific user experiments. In this paper, using the transversely tilt beam enabled by deflecting cavity and/or corrugated structure, the potential of large bandwidth X-ray free-electron lasers generation with the natural gradient of the planar undulator are discussed. Theoretical predictions and numerical simulations demonstrated that X-ray bandwidth exceeding 5% can be observed with the optimized free-electron laser parameters.

Proposals for gain cascading in single-pass of a free-electron laser oscillator

The low-gain free-electron laser (FEL) oscillators are cutting-edge tools to produce fully coherent radiation in the spectral region from terahertz to vacuum ultraviolet, and potentially in hard X-ray. In this paper, it is proposed to utilize an FEL oscillator with multi-stage undulators to enable gain cascading in a single-pass, making it possible to achieve shorter single pulse lengths, higher peak power, and even higher pulse energy than classical FEL oscillator. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations in the infrared and hard X-ray regions show that our proposal is effective.

Extending the photon energy coverage of an x-ray self-seeding FEL via the reverse taper enhanced harmonic generation technique

In this paper, a simple method is proposed to extend the photon energy range of a soft x-ray self-seeding free-electron laser (FEL). A normal monochromator is first applied to purify the FEL spectrum and provide a coherent seeding signal. This coherent signal then interacts with the electron beam in the following reverse tapered undulator section to generate strong coherent microbunchings while maintain the good quality of the electron beam. After that, the pre-bunched electron beam is sent into the third undulator section which resonates at a target high harmonic of the seed to amplify the coherent radiation at shorter wavelength. Three dimensional simulations have been performed and the results demonstrate that the photon energy gap between 1.5 keV and 4.5 keV of the self-seeding scheme can be fully covered and 100 GW-level peak power can be achieved by using the proposed technique.

Wakefields studies for the SXFEL user facility

Besides the original seeded undulator line, in the Soft X-ray free-electron laser (SXFEL) user facility at Shanghai, a second undulator line based on self-amplified spontaneous emission is proposed to achieve 2 nm laser pulse with extremely high brightness. In this paper, the beam energy deviation induced by the undulator wakefields is numerically obtained, and it is verified to have a good agreement between 3D and 2D simulation results. The beam energy loss along the undulator degrades the expected FEL output performance. Impact of wakefields on pulse energy, radiation power and spectrum is discussed, as well as the benefits of compensation obtained with a taper in the undulator field. And using the planned SXFEL diagnostic, a longitudinal wakefields measurement experiment is proposed and simulated.

Chromatic Effect for THz Generation in a Novel Wave-front Tilt Scheme

Deriving single or few cycle terahertz pulse (THz) by intense femtosecond laser through cascaded optical rectification in electro-optic crystals is a crucial technique in cutting-edge time-resolved spectroscopy to characterize micro-scale structures and ultrafast dynamics. In the past decade, lithium niobate (LN) crystal implementation of wave-front tilt scheme has been prevalently used, while painstaking efforts have been invested in order to achieve higher THz conversion efficiency. In this research we developed a brand new type of LN crystal possessing dual-face-cut and Brewster coupling, and conducted experimental and simulative investigation systematically to optimize the multi-dimensionally entangled parameters in THz generation, predicting the extreme conversion efficiency of 10% is potentially promising at the THz absorption coefficient of 0.5cm-1. More remarkably, we first discovered that the chirp of the driving laser pulse plays a decisive role in the wave-front tilt scheme, and the THz generation efficiency could be enhanced tremendously by applying an appropriate chirp.

A Simplified Model for Fast Optimization of Free-Electron Laser Oscillator

A simplified theoretical model for free-electron laser oscillator (FELO) simulation which reserves the main physics is proposed. In stead of using traditional macro particles sampling method, the theoretical model takes advantages of low gain theory to calculate the optical power single-pass gain in the undulator analytically, and some reasonable approximations are made to simplify the calculation of power growth in the cavity. The theoretical analysis of single-pass gain, power growth, time-dependent laser profile evolution and cavity desynchronism are accomplished more efficiently. We present the results of infrared wavelength FELO and X-ray FELO with the new model. The results is checked by simulation with GENESIS and OPC which demonstrates the validity of the theoretical model.

Generating coherent soft x-ray pulses in the water window with a high-brightness seeded free-electron laser

We propose a new scheme to generate high-brightness and temporal coherent soft x-ray radiation in a seeded free-electron laser. The proposed scheme is based the coherent harmonic generation (CHG) and superradiant principles. A CHG scheme is first used to generate coherent signal at ultra-high harmonics of the seed. This coherent signal is then amplified by a series of chicane-undulator modules via the fresh bunch and superradiant processes in the following radiator. Using a representative of realistic set of parameters, three-dimensional simulations have been carried out and the simulations results demonstrated that 10 GW-level ultra-short coherent radiation pulses in the water window can be achieved by using the proposed technique.

Fully coherent hard X-ray generation by two-stage of Phase-merging Enhanced Harmonic Generation

Cascading stages of seeded free electron laser (FEL) is a promising way to produce fully coherent X-ray radiations. We study a new approach to produce coherent hard X-rays by cascading the recently proposed phase-merging enhanced harmonic generation (PEHG). The scheme consists of one dogleg and two PEHG configurations, which may be one of the leading candidates for the extracted undulator branch in future X-ray FEL facilities. FEL physics studies show that such a scheme is feasible within the present technology and can provide high brightness X-ray radiation pulses with narrow bandwidth and fully coherence, and the radiated peak power at 1 angstrom wavelength converted from an initial 200 nm seed laser is over 2 GW.

Wakefield issue and its impact on X-ray photon pulse in the SXFEL test facility

Besides the designed beam acceleration, the energy of electrons changed by the longitudinal wakefields in a real free-electron laser (FEL) facility, which may degrade FEL performances from the theoretical expectation. In this paper, with the help of simulation codes, the wakefields induced beam energy loss in the sophisticated undulator section is calculated for Shanghai soft X-ray FEL, which is a two-stage seeded FEL test facility. While the 1st stage 44 nm FEL output is almost not affected by the wakefields, it is found that a beam energy loss about 0.8 MeV degrades the peak brightness of the 2nd stage 8.8 nm FEL by a factor of 1.6, which however can be compensated by a magnetic field fine tuning of each undulator segment.
