Optimal service resource management strategy for IoT-based health information system considering value co-creation of users

This paper explores optimal service resource management strategy, a continuous challenge for health information service to enhance service performance, optimise service resource utilisation and deliver interactive health information service. An adaptive optimal service resource management strategy was developed considering a value co-creation model in health information service with a focus on collaborative and interactive with users. The deep reinforcement learning algorithm was embedded in the Internet of Things (IoT)-based health information service system (I-HISS) to allocate service resources by controlling service provision and service adaptation based on user engagement behaviour. The simulation experiments were conducted to evaluate the significance of the proposed algorithm under different user reactions to the health information service.

Message Feedback Interference Cancellation Aided UAMP Iterative Detector for OTFS Systems

The designing of efficient signal detectors is important and yet challenge for orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) systems in high-mobility scenarios. In this letter, we develop an efficient message feedback interference cancellation aided unitary approximate message passing (denoted as UAMPMFIC) iterative detector, where the latest feedback messages from variable nodes are utilized for more reliable interference cancellation and performance improvement. A fast recursive scheme is leveraged in the proposed UAMP-MFIC detector to prevent complexity increasing. To further alleviate the error-propagation and improve the receiver performance, we also develop the bidirectional symbol detection structures, where Turbo UAMP-MFIC detector and iterative weight UAMP-MFIC detector are proposed to efficiently fuse the estimation results of forward and backward UAMP-MFIC detectors. The simulation results are finally provided to demonstrate performance improvement of our proposed detectors over existing detectors.

Agent based modelling for continuously varying supply chains

Problem definition: Supply chains are constantly evolving networks. Reinforcement learning is increasingly proposed as a solution to provide optimal control of these networks. Academic/practical: However, learning in continuously varying environments remains a challenge in the reinforcement learning literature.Methodology: This paper therefore seeks to address whether agents can control varying supply chain problems, transferring learning between environments that require different strategies and avoiding catastrophic forgetting of tasks that have not been seen in a while. To evaluate this approach, two state-of-the-art Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms are compared: an actor-critic learner, Proximal Policy Optimisation(PPO), and a Recurrent Proximal Policy Optimisation (RPPO), PPO with a Long Short-Term Memory(LSTM) layer, which is showing popularity in online learning environments. Results: First these methods are compared on six sets of environments with varying degrees of stochasticity. The results show that more lean strategies adopted in Batch environments are different from those adopted in Stochastic environments with varying products. The methods are also compared on various continuous supply chain scenarios, where the PPO agents are shown to be able to adapt through continuous learning when the tasks are similar but show more volatile performance when changing between the extreme tasks. However, the RPPO, with an ability to remember histories, is able to overcome this to some extent and takes on a more realistic strategy. Managerial implications: Our results provide a new perspective on the continuously varying supply chain, the cooperation and coordination of agents are crucial for improving the overall performance in uncertain and semi-continuous non-stationary supply chain environments without the need to retrain the environment as the demand changes.

A novel feature selection method based on quantum support vector machine

Feature selection is critical in machine learning to reduce dimensionality and improve model accuracy and efficiency. The exponential growth in feature space dimensionality for modern datasets directly results in ambiguous samples and redundant features, which can severely degrade classification accuracy. Quantum machine learning offers potential advantages for addressing this challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel method, quantum support vector machine feature selection (QSVMF), integrating quantum support vector machines with multi-objective genetic algorithm. QSVMF optimizes multiple simultaneous objectives: maximizing classification accuracy, minimizing selected features and quantum circuit costs, and reducing feature covariance. We apply QSVMF for feature selection on a breast cancer dataset, comparing the performance of QSVMF against classical approaches with the selected features. Experimental results show that QSVMF achieves superior performance. Furthermore, The Pareto front solutions of QSVMF enable analysis of accuracy versus feature set size trade-offs, identifying extremely sparse yet accurate feature subsets. We contextualize the biological relevance of the selected features in terms of known breast cancer biomarkers. This work highlights the potential of quantum-based feature selection to enhance machine learning efficiency and performance on complex real-world data.

Several fitness functions and entanglement gates in quantum kernel generation

Quantum machine learning (QML) represents a promising frontier in the quantum technologies. In this pursuit of quantum advantage, the quantum kernel method for support vector machine has emerged as a powerful approach. Entanglement, a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics, assumes a central role in quantum computing. In this paper, we investigate the optimal number of entanglement gates in the quantum kernel feature maps by a multi-objective genetic algorithm. We distinct the fitness functions of genetic algorithm for non-local gates for entanglement and local gates to gain insights into the benefits of employing entanglement gates. Our experiments reveal that the optimal configuration of quantum circuits for the quantum kernel method incorporates a proportional number of non-local gates for entanglement. The result complements the prior literature on quantum kernel generation where non-local gates were largely suppressed. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the separability indexes of data can be leveraged to estimate the number of non-local gates required for the quantum support vector machine's feature maps. This insight can be helpful in selecting appropriate parameters, such as the entanglement parameter, in various quantum programming packages like https://qiskit.org/ based on data analysis. Our findings offer valuable guidance for enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of quantum machine learning algorithms.

Tunable Chirality-dependent Nonlinear Electrical Responses in 2D Tellurium

Tellurium (Te) is an elemental semiconductor with a simple chiral crystal structure. Te in a two-dimensional (2D) form synthesized by solution-based method shows excellent electrical, optical, and thermal properties. In this work, the chirality of hydrothermally grown 2D Te is identified and analyzed by hot sulfuric acid etching and high-angle tilted high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. The gate-tunable nonlinear electrical responses, including the nonreciprocal electrical transport in the longitudinal direction and the nonlinear planar Hall effect in the transverse direction, are observed in 2D Te under a magnetic field. Moreover, the nonlinear electrical responses have opposite signs in left- and right-handed 2D Te due to the opposite spin polarizations ensured by the chiral symmetry. The fundamental relationship between the spin-orbit coupling and the crystal symmetry in two enantiomers provides a viable platform for realizing chirality-based electronic devices by introducing the chirality degree of freedom into electron transport.

FSSA: Efficient 3-Round Secure Aggregation for Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning

Federated learning (FL) allows a large number of clients to collaboratively train machine learning (ML) models by sending only their local gradients to a central server for aggregation in each training iteration, without sending their raw training data. Unfortunately, recent attacks on FL demonstrate that local gradients may leak information about local training data. In response to such attacks, Bonawitz \textit{et al.} (CCS 2017) proposed a secure aggregation protocol that allows a server to compute the sum of clients' local gradients in a secure manner. However, their secure aggregation protocol requires at least 4 rounds of communication between each client and the server in each training iteration. The number of communication rounds is closely related not only to the total communication cost but also the ML model accuracy, as the number of communication rounds affects client dropouts. In this paper, we propose FSSA, a 3-round secure aggregation protocol, that is efficient in terms of computation and communication, and resilient to client dropouts. We prove the security of FSSA in honest-but-curious setting and show that the security can be maintained even if an arbitrarily chosen subset of clients drop out at any time. We evaluate the performance of FSSA and show that its computation and communication overhead remains low even on large datasets. Furthermore, we conduct an experimental comparison between FSSA and Bonawitz \textit{et al.}'s protocol. The comparison results show that, in addition to reducing the number of communication rounds, FSSA achieves a significant improvement in computational efficiency.

Predictions and Measurements of Thermal Conductivity of Ceramic Materials at High Temperature

The lattice thermal conductivity ($κ$) of two ceramic materials, cerium dioxide (CeO$_2$) and magnesium oxide (MgO), is computed up to 1500 K using first principles and the phonon Boltzmann Transport Equation (PBTE) and compared to time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) measurements up to 800 K. Phonon renormalization and the four-phonon effect, along with high temperature thermal expansion, are integrated in our \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations. This is done by first relaxing structures and then fitting to a set of effective force constants employed in a temperature-dependent effective potential (TDEP) method. Both three-phonon and four-phonon scattering rates are computed based on these effective force constants. Our calculated thermal conductivities from the PBTE solver agree well with literature and our TDTR measurements. Other predicted thermal properties including thermal expansion, frequency shift, and phonon linewidth also compare well with available experimental data. Our results show that high temperature softens phonon frequency and reduces four-phonon scattering strength in both ceramics. Compared to MgO, we find that CeO$_2$ has weaker four-phonon effect and renormalization greatly reduces its four-phonon scattering rates.

Protecting quantum entanglement between error-corrected logical qubits

Entanglement represents one of the most important conceptual advances in physics during the last century and is also one of the most essential resources in quantum information science. However, entanglement is fragile and its potential advantages in applications are hindered by decoherence in practice. Here, we experimentally realize entangled logical qubits (ELQ) with a bosonic quantum module by encoding quantum information into spatially separated microwave modes. The entanglement is protected by repetitive quantum error correction, and the coherence time of the purified ELQ via error detection is improved by 45$\%$ compared with the unprotected ELQ and exceeds that of the entangled physical qubits. In addition, violation of the Bell inequality by logical qubits is demonstrated for the first time with the measured Bell signal B=2.250$\pm$0.019 after purification, surpassing the classical bound by 13 standard deviations. The protected ELQ could be applied in future explorations of quantum foundations and applications of quantum networks.

A Functional approach for Two Way Dimension Reduction in Time Series

The rise in data has led to the need for dimension reduction techniques, especially in the area of non-scalar variables, including time series, natural language processing, and computer vision. In this paper, we specifically investigate dimension reduction for time series through functional data analysis. Current methods for dimension reduction in functional data are functional principal component analysis and functional autoencoders, which are limited to linear mappings or scalar representations for the time series, which is inefficient. In real data applications, the nature of the data is much more complex. We propose a non-linear function-on-function approach, which consists of a functional encoder and a functional decoder, that uses continuous hidden layers consisting of continuous neurons to learn the structure inherent in functional data, which addresses the aforementioned concerns in the existing approaches. Our approach gives a low dimension latent representation by reducing the number of functional features as well as the timepoints at which the functions are observed. The effectiveness of the proposed model is demonstrated through multiple simulations and real data examples.

Deep quantum neural networks equipped with backpropagation on a superconducting processor

Deep learning and quantum computing have achieved dramatic progresses in recent years. The interplay between these two fast-growing fields gives rise to a new research frontier of quantum machine learning. In this work, we report the first experimental demonstration of training deep quantum neural networks via the backpropagation algorithm with a six-qubit programmable superconducting processor. In particular, we show that three-layer deep quantum neural networks can be trained efficiently to learn two-qubit quantum channels with a mean fidelity up to 96.0% and the ground state energy of molecular hydrogen with an accuracy up to 93.3% compared to the theoretical value. In addition, six-layer deep quantum neural networks can be trained in a similar fashion to achieve a mean fidelity up to 94.8% for learning single-qubit quantum channels. Our experimental results explicitly showcase the advantages of deep quantum neural networks, including quantum analogue of the backpropagation algorithm and less stringent coherence-time requirement for their constituting physical qubits, thus providing a valuable guide for quantum machine learning applications with both near-term and future quantum devices.

Temperature-Dependent Full Spectrum Optical Responses of Semiconductors from First Principles

From ultraviolet to mid-infrared region, light-matter interaction mechanisms in semiconductors progressively shift from electronic transitions to phononic resonances and are affected by temperature. Here, we present a parallel temperature-dependent treatment of both electrons and phonons entirely from first principles, enabling the prediction of full-spectrum optical responses. At elevated temperatures, $\textit{ab initio}$ molecular dynamics is employed to find thermal perturbations to electronic structures and construct effective force constants describing potential landscape. Four-phonon scattering and phonon renormalization are included in an integrated manner in this approach. As a prototype ceramic material, cerium dioxide (CeO$_2$) is considered in this work. Our first-principles calculated refractive index of CeO$_2$ agrees well with measured data from literature and our own temperature-dependent ellipsometer experiment.

ISA-Net: Improved spatial attention network for PET-CT tumor segmentation

Achieving accurate and automated tumor segmentation plays an important role in both clinical practice and radiomics research. Segmentation in medicine is now often performed manually by experts, which is a laborious, expensive and error-prone task. Manual annotation relies heavily on the experience and knowledge of these experts. In addition, there is much intra- and interobserver variation. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a method that can automatically segment tumor target regions. In this paper, we propose a deep learning segmentation method based on multimodal positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT), which combines the high sensitivity of PET and the precise anatomical information of CT. We design an improved spatial attention network(ISA-Net) to increase the accuracy of PET or CT in detecting tumors, which uses multi-scale convolution operation to extract feature information and can highlight the tumor region location information and suppress the non-tumor region location information. In addition, our network uses dual-channel inputs in the coding stage and fuses them in the decoding stage, which can take advantage of the differences and complementarities between PET and CT. We validated the proposed ISA-Net method on two clinical datasets, a soft tissue sarcoma(STS) and a head and neck tumor(HECKTOR) dataset, and compared with other attention methods for tumor segmentation. The DSC score of 0.8378 on STS dataset and 0.8076 on HECKTOR dataset show that ISA-Net method achieves better segmentation performance and has better generalization. Conclusions: The method proposed in this paper is based on multi-modal medical image tumor segmentation, which can effectively utilize the difference and complementarity of different modes. The method can also be applied to other multi-modal data or single-modal data by proper adjustment.

Spot-on: A Checkpointing Framework for Fault-Tolerant Long-running Workloads on Cloud Spot Instances

Spot instances offer a cost-effective solution for applications running in the cloud computing environment. However, it is challenging to run long-running jobs on spot instances because they are subject to unpredictable evictions. Here, we present Spot-on, a generic software framework that supports fault-tolerant long-running workloads on spot instances through checkpoint and restart. Spot-on leverages existing checkpointing packages and is compatible with the major cloud vendors. Using a genomics application as a test case, we demonstrated that Spot-on supports both application-specific and transparent checkpointing methods. Compared to running applications using on-demand instances, it allows the completion of these workloads for a significant reduction in computing costs. Compared to running applications using application-specific checkpoint mechanisms, transparent checkpoint-protected applications reduce runtime by up to 40%, leading to further cost savings of up to 86%.

Distributional Actor-Critic Ensemble for Uncertainty-Aware Continuous Control

Uncertainty quantification is one of the central challenges for machine learning in real-world applications. In reinforcement learning, an agent confronts two kinds of uncertainty, called epistemic uncertainty and aleatoric uncertainty. Disentangling and evaluating these uncertainties simultaneously stands a chance of improving the agent's final performance, accelerating training, and facilitating quality assurance after deployment. In this work, we propose an uncertainty-aware reinforcement learning algorithm for continuous control tasks that extends the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient algorithm (DDPG). It exploits epistemic uncertainty to accelerate exploration and aleatoric uncertainty to learn a risk-sensitive policy. We conduct numerical experiments showing that our variant of DDPG outperforms vanilla DDPG without uncertainty estimation in benchmark tasks on robotic control and power-grid optimization.

Disentangling Object Motion and Occlusion for Unsupervised Multi-frame Monocular Depth

Conventional self-supervised monocular depth prediction methods are based on a static environment assumption, which leads to accuracy degradation in dynamic scenes due to the mismatch and occlusion problems introduced by object motions. Existing dynamic-object-focused methods only partially solved the mismatch problem at the training loss level. In this paper, we accordingly propose a novel multi-frame monocular depth prediction method to solve these problems at both the prediction and supervision loss levels. Our method, called DynamicDepth, is a new framework trained via a self-supervised cycle consistent learning scheme. A Dynamic Object Motion Disentanglement (DOMD) module is proposed to disentangle object motions to solve the mismatch problem. Moreover, novel occlusion-aware Cost Volume and Re-projection Loss are designed to alleviate the occlusion effects of object motions. Extensive analyses and experiments on the Cityscapes and KITTI datasets show that our method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art monocular depth prediction methods, especially in the areas of dynamic objects. Delay-Doppler Reversal for OTFS System in Doubly-selective Fading Channels

The recent proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation shows signifcant advantages than conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for high mobility wireless communications. However, a challenging problem is the development of effcient receivers for practical OTFS systems with low complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel delay-Doppler reversal (DDR) technology for OTFS system with desired performance and low complexity. We present the DDR technology from a perspective of two-dimensional cascaded channel model, analyze its computational complexity and also analyze its performance gain compared to the direct processing (DP) receiver without DDR. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed DDR receiver outperforms traditional receivers in doubly-selective fading channels.

Adaptive Algorithm for Quantum Amplitude Estimation

Quantum amplitude estimation is a key sub-routine of a number of quantum algorithms with various applications. We propose an adaptive algorithm for interval estimation of amplitudes. The quantum part of the algorithm is based only on Grover's algorithm. The key ingredient is the introduction of an adjustment factor, which adjusts the amplitude of good states such that the amplitude after the adjustment, and the original amplitude, can be estimated without ambiguity in the subsequent step. We show with numerical studies that the proposed algorithm uses a similar number of quantum queries to achieve the same level of precision $ε$ compared to state-of-the-art algorithms, but the classical part, i.e., the non-quantum part, has substantially lower computational complexity. We rigorously prove that the number of oracle queries achieves $O(1/ε)$, i.e., a quadratic speedup over classical Monte Carlo sampling, and the computational complexity of the classical part achieves $O(\log(1/ε))$, both up to a double-logarithmic factor.
