Room Temperature Electrocaloric Effect in Layered Ferroelectric CuInP2S6 for Solid State Refrigeration

A material with reversible temperature change capability under an external electric field, known as the electrocaloric effect (ECE), has long been considered as a promising solid-state cooling solution. However, electrocaloric (EC) performance of EC materials generally is not sufficiently high for real cooling applications. As a result, exploring EC materials with high performance is of great interest and importance. Here, we report on the ECE of ferroelectric materials with van der Waals layered structure (CuInP2S6 or CIPS in this work in particular). Over 60% polarization charge change is observed within a temperature change of only 10 K at Curie temperature. Large adiabatic temperature change (|ΔT|) of 3.3 K, isothermal entropy change (|ΔS|) of 5.8 J kg-1 K-1 at |ΔE|=142.0 kV cm-1 at 315 K (above and near room temperature) are achieved, with a large EC strength (|ΔT|/|ΔE|) of 29.5 mK cm kV-1. The ECE of CIPS is also investigated theoretically by numerical simulation and a further EC performance projection is provided.

Observation of topological magnon insulator states in a superconducting circuit

Searching topological states in artificial systems has recently become a rapidly growing field of research. Meanwhile, significant experimental progresses on observing topological phenomena have been made in superconducting circuits. However, topological insulator states have not yet been reported in this system. Here, for the first time, we experimentally realize a tunable dimerized spin chain model and observe the topological magnon insulator states in a superconducting qubit chain. Via parametric modulations of the qubit frequencies, we show that the qubit chain can be flexibly tuned into topologically trivial or nontrivial magnon insulator states. Based on monitoring the quantum dynamics of a single-qubit excitation in the chain, we not only measure the topological winding numbers, but also observe the topological magnon edge and defect states. Our experiment exhibits the great potential of tunable superconducting qubit chain as a versatile platform for exploring non-interacting and interacting symmetry-protected topological states.

Prediction of Daily PM2.5 Concentration in China Using Data-Driven Ordinary Differential Equations

Accurate reporting and forecasting of PM2.5 concentration are important for improving public health. In this paper, we propose a daily prediction method of PM2.5 concentration by using data-driven ordinary differential equation (ODE) models. Specifically, based on the historical PM2.5 concentration, this method combines genetic programming and orthogonal least square method to evolve the ODE models, which describe the transport of PM2.5 and then uses the data-driven ODEs to predict the air quality in the future. Experiment results show that the ODE models obtain similar prediction results as the typical statistical model, and the prediction results from this method are relatively good. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to evolve data-driven ODE models to study PM2.5 prediction.

Quantum generative adversarial learning in a superconducting quantum circuit

Generative adversarial learning is one of the most exciting recent breakthroughs in machine learning---a subfield of artificial intelligence that is currently driving a revolution in many aspects of modern society. It has shown splendid performance in a variety of challenging tasks such as image and video generations. More recently, a quantum version of generative adversarial learning has been theoretically proposed and shown to possess the potential of exhibiting an exponential advantage over its classical counterpart. Here, we report the first proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of quantum generative adversarial learning in a superconducting quantum circuit. We demonstrate that, after several rounds of adversarial learning, a quantum state generator can be trained to replicate the statistics of the quantum data output from a digital qubit channel simulator, with a high fidelity ($98.8\%$ on average) that the discriminator cannot distinguish between the true and the generated data. Our results pave the way for experimentally exploring the intriguing long-sought-after quantum advantages in machine learning tasks with noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices.

Experimental repetitive quantum channel simulation

Universal control of quantum systems is a major goal to be achieved for quantum information processing, which demands thorough understanding of fundamental quantum mechanics and promises applications of quantum technologies. So far, most studies concentrate on ideally isolated quantum systems governed by unitary evolutions, while practical quantum systems are open and described by quantum channels due to their inevitable coupling to environment. Here, we experimentally simulate arbitrary quantum channels for an open quantum system, i.e. a single photonic qubit in a superconducting quantum circuit. The arbitrary channel simulation is achieved with minimum resource of only one ancilla qubit and measurement-based adaptive control. By repetitively implementing the quantum channel simulation, we realize an arbitrary Liouvillian for a continuous evolution of an open quantum system for the first time. Our experiment provides not only a testbed for understanding quantum noise and decoherence, but also a powerful tool for full control of practical open quantum systems.

Demonstration of quantum error correction and universal gate set on a binomial bosonic logical qubit

Logical qubit encoding and quantum error correction (QEC) have been experimentally demonstrated in various physical systems with multiple physical qubits, however, logical operations are challenging due to the necessary nonlocal operations. Alternatively, logical qubits with bosonic-mode-encoding are of particular interest because their QEC protection is hardware efficient, but gate operations on QEC protected logical qubits remain elusive. Here, we experimentally demonstrate full control on a single logical qubit with a binomial bosonic code, including encoding, decoding, repetitive QEC, and high-fidelity (97.0% process fidelity on average) universal quantum gate set on the logical qubit. The protected logical qubit has shown 2.8 times longer lifetime than the uncorrected one. A Ramsey experiment on a protected logical qubit is demonstrated for the first time with two times longer coherence than the unprotected one. Our experiment represents an important step towards fault-tolerant quantum computation based on bosonic encoding.

Reliable IoT Storage: Minimizing Bandwidth Use in Storage Without Newcomer Nodes

This letter characterizes the optimal policies for bandwidth use and storage for the problem of distributed storage in Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios, where lost nodes cannot be replaced by new nodes as is typically assumed in Data Center and Cloud scenarios. We develop an information flow model that captures the overall process of data transmission between IoT devices, from the initial preparation stage (generating redundancy from the original data) to the different repair stages with fewer and fewer devices. Our numerical results show that in a system with 10 nodes, the proposed optimal scheme can save as much as 10.3% of bandwidth use, and as much as 44% storage use with respect to the closest suboptimal approach.

FHEDN: A based on context modeling Feature Hierarchy Encoder-Decoder Network for face detection

Because of affected by weather conditions, camera pose and range, etc. Objects are usually small, blur, occluded and diverse pose in the images gathered from outdoor surveillance cameras or access control system. It is challenging and important to detect faces precisely for face recognition system in the field of public security. In this paper, we design a based on context modeling structure named Feature Hierarchy Encoder-Decoder Network for face detection(FHEDN), which can detect small, blur and occluded face with hierarchy by hierarchy from the end to the beginning likes encoder-decoder in a single network. The proposed network is consist of multiple context modeling and prediction modules, which are in order to detect small, blur, occluded and diverse pose faces. In addition, we analyse the influence of distribution of training set, scale of default box and receipt field size to detection performance in implement stage. Demonstrated by experiments, Our network achieves promising performance on WIDER FACE and FDDB benchmarks.

Top partner production at $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider in the littlest Higgs Model with T-parity

In the framework of the littlest Higgs Model with T-parity, we discuss the top partner production at future $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We calculate the cross sections of the top partner production processes and associated production processes of Higgs and top partner under current constraints. Then, we investigate the observability of the T-odd top partner pair production through the process $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow T_{-}\bar{T}_{-}\rightarrow t\bar{t}A_{H}A_{H}$ in the $t\bar{t}$ di-lepton channel for two T-odd top partner mass $m_{T_{-}}$=603(708) GeV at $\sqrt{s}$=1.5 TeV. We analyze the signal significance depending on the integrated luminosity and find this signal is promising at the future high energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider.

Controlled Growth of a Large-Size 2D Selenium Nanosheet and Its Electronic and Optoelectronic Applications

Selenium has attracted intensive attention as a promising material candidate for future optoelectronic applications. However, selenium has a strong tendency to grow into nanowire forms due to its anisotropic atomic structure, which has largely hindered the exploration of its potential applications. In this work, using a physical vapor deposition method, we have demonstrated the synthesis of large-size, high-quality 2D selenium nanosheets, the minimum thickness of which could be as thin as 5 nm. The Se nanosheet exhibits a strong in-plane anisotropic property, which is determined by angle-resolved Raman spectroscopy. Back-gating field-effect transistors based on a Se nanosheet exhibit p-type transport behaviors with on-state current density around 20 mA/mm at Vds = 3 V. Four-terminal field effect devices are also fabricated to evaluate the intrinsic hole mobility of the selenium nanosheet, and the value is determined to be 0.26 cm2 Vs at 300 K. The selenium nanosheet phototransistors show an excellent photoresponsivity of up to 263 A/W, with a rise time of 0.1 s and fall time of 0.12 s. These results suggest that crystal selenium as a 2D form of a 1D van der Waals solid opens up the possibility to explore device applications.

Manipulating Multiple Order Parameters via Oxygen Vacancies: The case of Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-δ

Controlling functionalities, such as magnetism or ferroelectricity, by means of oxygen vacancies (VO) is a key issue for the future development of transition metal oxides. Progress in this field is currently addressed through VO variations and their impact on mainly one order parameter. Here we reveal a new mechanism for tuning both magnetism and ferroelectricity simultaneously by using VO. Combined experimental and density-functional theory studies of Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-δ, we demonstrate that oxygen vacancies create Ti3+ 3d1 defect states, mediating the ferromagnetic coupling between the localized Eu 4f7 spins, and increase an off-center displacement of Ti ions, enhancing the ferroelectric Curie temperature. The dual function of Ti sites also promises a magnetoelectric coupling in the Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-δ.

Modeling Boyciana-fish-human Interaction with Partial Differential Algebraic Equations

With human social behaviors influence, some boyciana-fish reaction-diffusion system coupled with elliptic human distribution equation is considered. Firstly, under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and ratio-dependent functional response the system can be described as a nonlinear partial differential algebraic equations (PDAEs) and the corresponding linearized system is discussed with singular system theorem. In what follows we discuss the elliptic subsystem and show that the three kinds of nonnegative are corresponded to three different human interference conditions: human free, overdevelopment and regular human activity. Next we examine the system persistence properties: absorbtion region and the stability of positive steady states of three systems. And the diffusion-driven unstable property is also discussed. Moreover, we propose some energy estimation discussion to reveal the dynamic property among the boyciana-fish-human interaction systems. Finally, using the realistic data collected in the past fourteen years, by PDAEs model parameter optimization, we carry out some predicted results about wetland boyciana population. The applicability of the proposed approaches are confirmed analytically and are evaluated in numerical simulations.

Which is conducive to high responsivity in a hybrid graphene-quantum dot transistor: Bulk- or layer- heterojunction

Heterojunction, a photoelectric conversion center, plays a critical role in photo detection. A compare study is performed on field effect phototransistors (FEpT) with two typical heterojunctions based on graphene and PbSe quantum dots (QDs) hybrid, including layer-heterojunction (LH) and bulk-heterojunction (BH). LH-FEpT exhibits a higher mobility (μn) 677 cm2V-1s-1, whereas μn of BH-FEpT is as low as 314 cm2V-1s-1, however the higher responsivity (106 A/W) is achieved by the former. Because R is proportional to the product of mobility and transfer rate, and high transfer rate of LH-FEpT overcompensates the shortage of low mobility. Although large area of heterojunction and high mobility benefit high density of photo-induced carriers, lack of transport mechanism becomes to the main constrain factor in BH-FEpT. Therefore, LH-FEpT is a better candidate of near infrared (NIR) photo detectors.

A comparing study on optoelectronic properties of phototransistors based on MEH-PPV and PbS QD hybrids with bulk- and layer-heterojunction

As the responsivity (R) of a thin film photo detector is proportional to the product of the photo-induced carrier density (n) and mobility (u) (Z. Sun, Z. Liu, J. Li, G.-a. Tai, S. Lau and F. Yan, Adv. Mater., 24, 5878, 2012), which of the types is conducive to photo detection, choosing between layer-heterojunction (LH) and bulk-heterojunction (BH) field effect phototransistors (FEpTs), is still unknown. A comparison study is performed based on an MEH-PPV and PbS QDs hybrid.

Traveling Wave Solutions of a Reaction-Diffusion Equation with State-Dependent Delay

This paper is concerned with the traveling wave solutions of a reaction-diffusion equation with state-dependent delay. When the birth function is monotone, the existence and nonexistence of monotone traveling wave solutions are established. When the birth function is not monotone, the minimal wave speed of nontrivial traveling wave solutions is obtained. The results are proved by the construction of upper and lower solutions and application of the fixed point theorem.

Traveling Wave Phenomena in a Kermack-McKendrick SIR model

We study the existence and nonexistence of traveling waves of general diffusive Kermack-McKendrick SIR models with standard incidence where the total population is not constant. The three classes, susceptible $S$, infected $I$ and removed $R$, are all involved in the traveling wave solutions. We show that the minimum speed for the existence of traveling waves for this three-dimensional non-monotonic system can be derived from its linearizaion at the initial disease-free equilibrium. The proof in this paper is based on Schauder fixed point theorem and Laplace transform and provides a promising method to deal with high dimensional epidemic models.

Modeling Information Diffusion in Online Social Networks with Partial Differential Equations

Online social networks such as Twitter and Facebook have gained tremendous popularity for information exchange. The availability of unprecedented amounts of digital data has accelerated research on information diffusion in online social networks. However, the mechanism of information spreading in online social networks remains elusive due to the complexity of social interactions and rapid change of online social networks. Much of prior work on information diffusion over online social networks has based on empirical and statistical approaches. The majority of dynamical models arising from information diffusion over online social networks involve ordinary differential equations which only depend on time. In a number of recent papers, the authors propose to use partial differential equations(PDEs) to characterize temporal and spatial patterns of information diffusion over online social networks. Built on intuitive cyber-distances such as friendship hops in online social networks, the reaction-diffusion equations take into account influences from various external out-of-network sources, such as the mainstream media, and provide a new analytic framework to study the interplay of structural and topical influences on information diffusion over online social networks. In this survey, we discuss a number of PDE-based models that are validated with real datasets collected from popular online social networks such as Digg and Twitter. Some new developments including the conservation law of information flow in online social networks and information propagation speeds based on traveling wave solutions are presented to solidify the foundation of the PDE models and highlight the new opportunities and challenges for mathematicians as well as computer scientists and researchers in online social networks.
