Adaptive prediction theory combining offline and online learning

Real-world intelligence systems usually operate by combining offline learning and online adaptation with highly correlated and non-stationary system data or signals, which, however, has rarely been investigated theoretically in the literature. This paper initiates a theoretical investigation on the prediction performance of a two-stage learning framework combining offline and online algorithms for a class of nonlinear stochastic dynamical systems. For the offline-learning phase, we establish an upper bound on the generalization error for approximate nonlinear-least-squares estimation under general datasets with strong correlation and distribution shift, leveraging the Kullback-Leibler divergence to quantify the distributional discrepancies. For the online-adaptation phase, we address, on the basis of the offline-trained model, the possible uncertain parameter drift in real-world target systems by proposing a meta-LMS prediction algorithm. This two-stage framework, integrating offline learning with online adaptation, demonstrates superior prediction performances compared with either purely offline or online methods. Both theoretical guarantees and empirical studies are provided.

Towards a Unified Coding Scheme for 6G

The growing demand for higher data rates necessitates continuous innovations in wireless communication systems, particularly with the emergence of 6G. Channel coding plays a crucial role in this evolution. In 5G systems, rate-adaptive raptor-like quasi-cyclic irregular low-density parity-check codes are used for the data link, while polar codes with successive cancellation list decoding handle short messages on the synchronization channel. However, to meet the stringent requirements of future 6G systems, a versatile and unified coding scheme should be developed - one that offers competitive error-correcting performance alongside low complexity encoding and decoding schemes that enable energy-efficient hardware implementations. This white paper outlines the vision for such a unified coding scheme. We explore various 6G communication scenarios that pose new challenges to channel coding and provide a first analysis of potential solutions.

High Girth Spatially-Coupled LDPC Codes with Hierarchical Structure

Quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are a class of LDPC codes with a simple construction facilitating hardware implementation while achieving excellent performance. In this paper, we introduce an algorithm that constructs QC spatially-coupled (SC) LDPC codes with large girth while keeping the constraint length small. The algorithm offers a "protograph to basegraph" construction, focusing on finding small lifting sizes of QC codes while avoiding short cycles. This work extends the hierarchical quasi-cyclic (HQC) construction for block LDPC codes proposed by Wang et al. to the spatially coupled case. The construction is based on the cycle relevant matrix (CRM) derived from the periodic structure of time-invariant SC-LDPC codes. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm effectively achieves the target girth with a small lifting factor, enabling low-complexity SC code construction.

Quaternary Neural Belief Propagation Decoding of Quantum LDPC Codes with Overcomplete Check Matrices

Quantum low-density parity-check (QLDPC) codes are promising candidates for error correction in quantum computers. One of the major challenges in implementing QLDPC codes in quantum computers is the lack of a universal decoder. In this work, we first propose to decode QLDPC codes with a belief propagation (BP) decoder operating on overcomplete check matrices. Then, we extend the neural BP (NBP) decoder, which was originally studied for suboptimal binary BP decoding of QLPDC codes, to quaternary BP decoders. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that both approaches as well as their combination yield a low-latency, high-performance decoder for several short to moderate length QLDPC codes.

Neural Belief Propagation Decoding of Quantum LDPC Codes Using Overcomplete Check Matrices

The recent success in constructing asymptotically good quantum low-density parity-check (QLDPC) codes makes this family of codes a promising candidate for error-correcting schemes in quantum computing. However, conventional belief propagation (BP) decoding of QLDPC codes does not yield satisfying performance due to the presence of unavoidable short cycles in their Tanner graph and the special degeneracy phenomenon. In this work, we propose to decode QLDPC codes based on a check matrix with redundant rows, generated from linear combinations of the rows in the original check matrix. This approach yields a significant improvement in decoding performance with the additional advantage of very low decoding latency. Furthermore, we propose a novel neural belief propagation decoder based on the quaternary BP decoder of QLDPC codes which leads to further decoding performance improvements.
