Voltage-Current-Emission Framework of Time-Resolved Electroluminescence

Time-resolved electroluminescence has been a central methodology in the development of LED devices. However, it still lacks quantitative theoretical descriptions of time-resolved electroluminescence. By combining the equivalent circuit models of semiconductor devices and the carrier dynamics of electroluminescence processes, we here developed a Voltage-Current-Emission framework to illustrate time-resolved electroluminescence from the pulse voltage as input, to injection current and finally generate electroluminescence as output. The features of different LED devices can be quantitatively interpreted, confirming the universal applicability across LEDs with different materials and device structures. Importantly, the curves of time-resolved electroluminescence can be simulated to quantitatively describe the dynamics of current and carriers of LED operation. In all, the Voltage-Current-Emission framework offers theoretical guidance for achieving advanced LED devices for AI technology.

Unraveling the Size Determination Mechanism of Nanocrystal Synthesis via Interpretable Neural Networks

Deep learning models of nanocrystal synthesis enable the prediction of size and shape by encoding precursors and reaction conditions. However, their black-box nature hinders gaining deep insights into the underlying synthetic mechanisms. Here, we develop the Nanocrystal Equation Learner (NanoEQL), a fully white-box neural network to unravel the size determination mechanisms of nanocrystal synthesis. Building on the EQL architecture, eight operators are introduced to replace standard activation functions to fit the mathematical equations in nanocrystal synthesis. Among these operators, three smoothed operators address the gradient explosion of singular operators at zero. To evaluate the weights of different precursors, we develop a temperature-gated attention pooling strategy that encodes concentration-driven and reactivity-driven chemical synthesis mechanisms into the temperature gate. The NanoEQL model illustrates that the final nanocrystal size can be described by a linear equation composed of three scalars representing nanocrystallization capability (-Zp), growth capability (Zrea), and external input potential (-Zops). These interpretable scalars not only advance the rational design of nanocrystal synthesis but also establish a generalizable paradigm for deciphering chemical reaction mechanisms through white-box machine learning.

A large-scale nanocrystal database with aligned synthesis and properties enabling generative inverse design

The synthesis of nanocrystals has been highly dependent on trial-and-error, due to the complex correlation between synthesis parameters and physicochemical properties. Although deep learning offers a potential methodology to achieve generative inverse design, it is still hindered by the scarcity of high-quality datasets that align nanocrystal synthesis routes with their properties. Here, we present the construction of a large-scale, aligned Nanocrystal Synthesis-Property (NSP) database and demonstrate its capability for generative inverse design. To extract structured synthesis routes and their corresponding product properties from literature, we develop NanoExtractor, a large language model (LLM) enhanced by well-designed augmentation strategies. NanoExtractor is validated against human experts, achieving a weighted average score of 88% on the test set, significantly outperforming chemistry-specialized (3%) and general-purpose LLMs (38%). The resulting NSP database contains nearly 160,000 aligned entries and serves as training data for our NanoDesigner, an LLM for inverse synthesis design. The generative capability of NanoDesigner is validated through the successful design of viable synthesis routes for both well-established PbSe nanocrystals and rarely reported MgF2 nanocrystals. Notably, the model recommends a counter-intuitive, non-stoichiometric precursor ratio (1:1) for MgF2 nanocrystals, which is experimentally confirmed as critical for suppressing byproducts. Our work bridges the gap between unstructured literature and data-driven synthesis, and also establishes a powerful human-AI collaborative paradigm for accelerating nanocrystal discovery.

Alcohol induced surface charging of colloidal quantum dots for controllable electrophoretic deposition processing

In this work, we report an alcohol-induced surface charging route of colloidal QDs to achieve controllable electrophoretic deposition processing. By adding a fixed amounts of alcohols into a preformed quantum dots solution in non-polar solvents, the colloidal quantum dots can be positively charged, and then deposited on negative electrode under applied electric field. The surface charging of PbSe quantum dots was investigated by zeta potential, nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and discrete Fourier transform calculations. It was found that the zeta potential of oleate acid capped PbSe QDs increases from +1.6 mV to +13.4 mV with the amount of alcohol solvent increasing. The alcohol-induced zeta potential increasing can be explained to the electron cloud shift of active hydrogen mediated by intermolecular hydrogen bonds between carboxy acid and alcohol. Considering the influence of surface charging of quantum dots on their dispersibility, we describe the microscopic mechanism of alcohol-induced electrophoretic deposition processing. Furthermore, we developed a size-selective separation protocol by controlling alcohol-induced electrophoretic deposition processing.

Deep Learning Models for Colloidal Nanocrystal Synthesis

Colloidal synthesis of nanocrystals usually includes complex chemical reactions and multi-step crystallization processes. Despite the great success in the past 30 years, it remains challenging to clarify the correlations between synthetic parameters of chemical reaction and physical properties of nanocrystals. Here, we developed a deep learning-based nanocrystal synthesis model that correlates synthetic parameters with the final size and shape of target nanocrystals, using a dataset of 3500 recipes covering 348 distinct nanocrystal compositions. The size and shape labels were obtained from transmission electron microscope images using a segmentation model trained with a semi-supervised algorithm on a dataset comprising 1.2 million nanocrystals. By applying the reaction intermediate-based data augmentation method and elaborated descriptors, the synthesis model was able to predict nanocrystal's size with a mean absolute error of 1.39 nm, while reaching an 89% average accuracy for shape classification. The synthesis model shows knowledge transfer capabilities across different nanocrystals with inputs of new recipes. With that, the influence of chemicals on the final size of nanocrystals was further evaluated, revealing the importance order of nanocrystal composition, precursor or ligand, and solvent. Overall, the deep learning-based nanocrystal synthesis model offers a powerful tool to expedite the development of high-quality nanocrystals.

Roadmap on Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes

In recent years, the field of metal-halide perovskite emitters has rapidly emerged as a new community in solid-state lighting. Their exceptional optoelectronic properties have contributed to the rapid rise in external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) in perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) from <1% (in 2014) to approaching 30% (in 2023) across a wide range of wavelengths. However, several challenges still hinder their commercialization, including the relatively low EQEs of blue/white devices, limited EQEs in large-area devices, poor device stability, as well as the toxicity of the easily accessible lead components and the solvents used in the synthesis and processing of PeLEDs. This roadmap addresses the current and future challenges in PeLEDs across fundamental and applied research areas, by sharing the community's perspectives. This work will provide the field with practical guidelines to advance PeLED development and facilitate more rapid commercialization.

Hot Polarons with Trapped Excitons and Octahedra-Twist Phonons in CH3NH3PbBr3 Hybrid Perovskite Nanowires

Hybrid Perovskites have shown a great potential for applications in photovoltaics and light-emitting devices with high efficiency. Interaction between defect-induced trapped excitons and phonons plays an important role in understanding the emerging phenomena for such an excellent figure-of-merit. Here we demonstrate hot polarons with narrow linewidth in $\mathrm{CH_{3}NH_{3}PbBr_{3}}$ nanowires, which originate from the interaction between trapped excitons and octahedra-twist phonons. The observation of hot polarons in photoluminescence without gain methods indicates the large interaction strength between excitons and phonons. The multiple hot polarons are further confirmed by magneto-optical spectra with a Zeeman splitting of the trapped excitons and a phonon energy increase with diamagnetic effect. Furthermore, the phonons participating in the interaction are demonstrated to be the octahedra-twist vibrations which are transverse optical phonons, while the interaction between trapped excitons and longitudinal optical phonons is weak. Our work demonstrates that trapped excitons in perovskites prefer to interact with transverse rather than longitudinal optical phonons. Since bulk materials usually interact with longitudinal optical phonons, this result provides a physical explanation of the high tolerance of defects in perovskites.

Room Temperature Continuous-wave Excited Biexciton Emission in CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals

Biexcitons are a manifestation of many-body excitonic interactions crucial for quantum information and quantum computation in the construction of coherent combinations of quantum states. However, due to their small binding energy and low transition efficiency, most biexcitons in conventional semiconductors exist either at cryogenic temperature or under femtosecond pulse laser excitation. Here we demonstrate room temperature, continuous wave driven biexciton states in CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals through coupling with a plasmonic nanogap. The room temperature CsPbBr3 biexciton excitation fluence (~100 mW/cm2) is reduced by ~10^13 times in the Ag nanowire-film nanogaps. The giant enhancement of biexciton emission is driven by coherent biexciton-plasmon Fano interference. These results provide new pathways to develop high efficiency non-blinking single photon sources, entangled light sources and lasers based on biexciton states.

Sputtered Gold Nanoparticles Enhanced Quantum Dot Light-emitting Diodes

Surface plasmonic effects of metallic particles have been known to be an effective method to improve the performance light emitting didoes. In this work, we reported the sputtered Au nanoparticles enhanced electroluminescence in inverted quantum dot light emitting diodes (ITO/Au NPs/ZnMgO/QDs/TFB/PEDOT:PSS/Al). By combining the time-resolved photoluminescence, transient electroluminescence and ultraviolet photoelectron spectrometer measurements, the enhancement can be explained to the internal field enhanced exciton coupling to surface plasmons and the increased electron injection rate with Au nanoparticles incorporation. Phenomenological numerical calculations indicated that the electron mobility of the electron transport layer was increased from 1.39x10-5 to 1.91x10-5 cm2/V.s for Au NPs modified devices. As a result, the maximum device luminescence is enhanced by 1.41 folds from 14,600 to 20,720 cd/cm2 and maximum current efficiency is improved by 1.29 folds from 3.12 to 4.02 cd/A.

High-Q microcavity enhanced optical properties of CuInS$_{2}$/ZnS colloidal quantum dots towards non-photodegradation

We report on a temporal evolution of photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy of CuInS$_{2}$/ZnS colloidal quantum dots (QDs) by drop-casting on SiO$_{2}$/Si substrates and high quality factor microdisks (MDs) under different atmospheric conditions. Fast PL decay, peak blueshift and linewidth broadening due to photooxidation have been observed at low excitation power. With further increasing of the excitation power, the PL peak position shows a redshift and linewidth becomes narrow, which is ascribed to the enhanced F$\ddot{o}$rster resonant energy transfer between different QDs by photoinduced agglomeration. The oxygen plays an important role in optically induced PL decay which is verified by reduced photobleaching effect in vacuum. When the QDs drop-casted on MDs, photooxidation and photobleaching are accelerated because the excitation efficiency is greatly enhanced with coupling the pumping laser with the cavity modes. However, when the emitted photons couple with cavity modes, a PL enhancement by more than 20 times is achieved because of the increased extraction efficiency and Purcell effects of MDs at room temperature (RT), and 35 times at 20 K. The photobleaching can be avoided with a small excitation power but with a strong PL intensity by taking advantages of high quality factor cavities. The high efficient PL emission without photodegradation is very promising for using CuInS$_{2}$ QDs as high efficient photon emitters at RT, where the photodegradation has always been limiting the practical applications of colloidal quantum dots.

Here we report that the high quality pure CH3NH3PbBr3 nanorods and Mn doped CH3NH3PbBr3 nanorods have been prepared by solution method and in which the exciton magnetic polarons (EMP) formed in Mn doped NRs, and a single mode lasing phenomenon from collective EMP in single NR have been detected when excited by fs pulse laser. This finding helps to understand the exciton and spin interactions and pave ways to the realization of new type of bosonic laser.

Recombination processes in CuInS$_{2}$/ZnS Nanocrystals during steady-state photoluminescence

We report on temperature- and excitation-power-dependent photoluminescence (PL) study of CuInS$_{2}$/ZnS nanocrystals dispersed on a SiO$_{2}$/Si substrate with a confocal micro-PL system. With increasing the excitation power at 22 K and room temperature, the PL spectra are blue-shifted because of the state filling. At low temperature, a small peak is observed at the low energy side of the spectrum, which could be due to the F$\ddot{o}$rster resonance energy transfer between different nanocrystals. The integrated PL intensity increases sublinearly as a function of excitation power with a power factor of around 2/3, which demonstrates the Auger recombination dominated process in the nanocrystals, especially under the high excitation power.
