Semantic-Guided Unsupervised Video Summarization

Video summarization is a crucial technique for social understanding, enabling efficient browsing of massive multimedia content and extraction of key information from social platforms. Most existing unsupervised summarization methods rely on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to enhance keyframe selection and generate coherent, video summaries through adversarial training. However, such approaches primarily exploit unimodal features, overlooking the guiding role of semantic information in keyframe selection, and often suffer from unstable training. To address these limitations, we propose a novel Semantic-Guided Unsupervised Video Summarization method. Specifically, we design a novel frame-level semantic alignment attention mechanism and integrate it into a keyframe selector, which guides the Transformer-based generator within the adversarial framework to better reconstruct videos. In addition, we adopt an incremental training strategy to progressively update the model components, effectively mitigating the instability of GAN training. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach achieves superior performance on multiple benchmark datasets.

A Fair and Efficient Hybrid Federated Learning Framework based on XGBoost for Distributed Power Prediction

In a modern power system, real-time data on power generation/consumption and its relevant features are stored in various distributed parties, including household meters, transformer stations and external organizations. To fully exploit the underlying patterns of these distributed data for accurate power prediction, federated learning is needed as a collaborative but privacy-preserving training scheme. However, current federated learning frameworks are polarized towards addressing either the horizontal or vertical separation of data, and tend to overlook the case where both are present. Furthermore, in mainstream horizontal federated learning frameworks, only artificial neural networks are employed to learn the data patterns, which are considered less accurate and interpretable compared to tree-based models on tabular datasets. To this end, we propose a hybrid federated learning framework based on XGBoost, for distributed power prediction from real-time external features. In addition to introducing boosted trees to improve accuracy and interpretability, we combine horizontal and vertical federated learning, to address the scenario where features are scattered in local heterogeneous parties and samples are scattered in various local districts. Moreover, we design a dynamic task allocation scheme such that each party gets a fair share of information, and the computing power of each party can be fully leveraged to boost training efficiency. A follow-up case study is presented to justify the necessity of adopting the proposed framework. The advantages of the proposed framework in fairness, efficiency and accuracy performance are also confirmed.

A Federated Learning Framework for Smart Grids: Securing Power Traces in Collaborative Learning

With the deployment of smart sensors and advancements in communication technologies, big data analytics have become vastly popular in the smart grid domain, informing stakeholders of the best power utilization strategy. However, these power-related data are stored and owned by different parties. For example, power consumption data are stored in numerous transformer stations across cities; mobility data of the population, which are important indicators of power consumption, are held by mobile companies. Direct data sharing might compromise party benefits, individual privacy and even national security. Inspired by the federated learning scheme from Google AI, we propose a federated learning framework for smart grids, which enables collaborative learning of power consumption patterns without leaking individual power traces. Horizontal federated learning is employed when data are scattered in the sample space; vertical federated learning, on the other hand, is designed for the case with data scattered in the feature space. Case studies show that, with proper encryption schemes such as Paillier encryption, the machine learning models constructed from the proposed framework are lossless, privacy-preserving and effective. Finally, the promising future of federated learning in other facets of the smart grid is discussed, including electric vehicles, distributed generation/consumption and integrated energy systems.

A Data-Driven Warm Start Approach for Convex Relaxation in Optimal Gas Flow

In this letter, we propose a data-driven warm start approach, empowered by artificial neural networks, to boost the efficiency of convex relaxations in optimal gas flow. Case studies show that this approach significantly decreases the number of iterations for the convex-concave procedure algorithm, and optimality and feasibility of the solution can still be guaranteed.

Stochastic Unit Commitment in Electricity-Gas Coupled Integrated Energy Systems based on Modified Progressive Hedging

The increasing number of gas-fired units has significantly intensified the coupling between power and gas networks. Traditionally, the nonlinearity and nonconvexity in gas flow equations, together with renewable-induced stochasticity, result in a computationally expensive model for unit commitment in electricity-gas coupled integrated energy systems (IES). To accelerate stochastic day-ahead scheduling, we applied and modified Progressive Hedging (PH), a heuristic approach that can be computed in parallel to yield scenario-independent unit commitment. By applying a termination and enumeration technique, the modified PH algorithm saves considerable computational time, especially when the unit production prices are similar for all generators, and when the scale of IES is large. Moreover, an adapted second-order cone relaxation (SOCR) is utilized to tackle the nonconvex gas flow equation. Case studies are performed on the IEEE 24-bus system/Belgium 20-node gas system and the IEEE 118-bus system/Belgium 20-node gas system. The computational efficiency when employing PH is 188 times that of commercial software, even outperforming Benders Decomposition. Meanwhile, the gap between the PH algorithm and the benchmark is less than 0.01% in both IES systems, which proves that the solution produced by PH reaches acceptable optimality in this stochastic UC problem.

Sulfate Radical Oxidation of Aromatic Contaminants: A Detailed Assessment of Density Functional Theory and High-Level Quantum Chemical Methods

Advanced oxidation processes that utilize highly oxidative radicals are widely used in water reuse treatment. In recent years, the application of sulfate radical (SO$_4\cdot^-$) as a promising oxidant for water treatment has gained increasing attention. To understand the efficiency of SO$_4\cdot^-$ in the degradation of organic contaminants in wastewater effluent, it is important to be able to predict the reaction kinetics of various SO$_4\cdot^-$-driven oxidation reactions. In this study, we utilize density functional theory (DFT) and high-level wavefunction-based methods (including computationally-intensive coupled cluster methods), to explore the activation energies and kinetic rates of SO$_4\cdot^-$-driven oxidation reactions on a series of benzene-derived contaminants. These high-level calculations encompassed a wide set of reactions including 110 forward/reverse reactions and 5 different computational methods in total. Based on the high-level coupled-cluster quantum calculations, we find that the popular M06-2X DFT functional is significantly more accurate for HO-additions than for SO$_4\cdot^-$ reactions. Most importantly, we highlight some of the limitations and deficiencies of other computational methods, and we recommend the use of high-level quantum calculations to spot-check environmental chemistry reactions that may lie outside the training set of the M06-2X functional, particularly for water oxidation reactions that involve SO$_4\cdot^-$ and other inorganic species.
