Cornering Higgsino: Use of Soft Displaced Track

Higgsino has been intensively searched for in the LHC experiments in recent years. Currently, there is an uncharted region beyond the LEP Higgsino mass limit where the mass splitting between the neutral and charged Higgsinos is around $0.3$-$1$ GEV, which is unexplored by either the soft di-lepton or disappearing track searches. This region is, however, of great importance from a phenomenological point of view, as many supersymmetric models predict such a mass spectrum. In this letter, we propose a possibility of filling this gap by using a soft micro-displaced track on top of the mono-jet event selection, which allows us to discriminate a signature of the charged Higgsino decay from the Standard Model background. It is found that this new strategy is potentially sensitive to a Higgsino mass of $\lesssim 180$ $(250)$ GeV at the LHC Run 2 (HL-LHC) for a charged-neutral mass splitting of $\simeq 0.5$ GeV.

How Heavy can Neutralino Dark Matter be?

What is the upper limit of the mass of the neutralino dark matter whose thermal relic is consistent with the observation? If the neutralino dark matter and colored sparticles are extremely degenerated in mass, with a mass difference less than the QCD scale, the dark matter annihilation is significantly increased and enjoys the "second freeze-out" after the QCD phase transition. In this case, the neutralino dark matter with a mass much greater than 100 TeV can realize the correct dark matter abundance. We study the dark matter abundance and its detection in the case of such highly degenerated mass spectrum of the neutralino dark matter and colored supersymmetric particles.

Aspects of Nonlinear Effect on Black Hole Superradiance

Under some conditions, light boson fields grow exponentially around a rotating black hole, called the superradiance instability. We discuss effects of nonlinear interactions of the boson on the instability. In particular, we focus on the effect of the particle production and show that the growth of the boson cloud may be saturated much before the black hole spin is extracted by the boson cloud, while the nonlinear interactions also induce the boson emission. For application, we revisit the superradiant instability of the standard model photon, axion and hidden photon.

Phenomenological Consequences of the Refined Swampland Conjecture

We discuss phenomenological consequences of the recently-introduced refinements of the de Sitter swampland conjecture. The conjecture constraints the first and the second derivatives of the scalar potential in terms of two $O(1)$ constants $c$ and $c'$, leading to interesting constraints on particle phenomenology, especially inflationary model building. Our work can also be regarded as bottom-up constraints on the values of $c$ and $c'$.

Gauged Peccei-Quinn Symmetry - A Case of Simultaneous Breaking of SUSY and PQ Symmetry

Recently, a simple prescription to embed the global Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry into a gauged $U(1)$ symmetry has been proposed. There, explicit breaking of the global PQ symmetry expected in quantum gravity are highly suppressed due to the gauged PQ symmetry. In this paper, we apply the gauged PQ mechanism to models where the global PQ symmetry and supersymmetry (SUSY) are simultaneously broken at around $\mathcal{O}(10^{11-12})$\,GeV. Such scenario is motivated by an intriguing coincidence between the supersymmetry breaking scale which explains the observed Higgs boson mass by the gravity mediated sfermion masses, and the PQ breaking scale which evades all the astrophysical and the cosmological constraints. As a concrete example, we construct a model which consists of a simultaneous supersymmetry/PQ symmetry breaking sector based on $SU(2)$ dynamics and an additional PQ symmetry breaking sector based on $SU(N)$ dynamics. We also show that new vector-like particles are predicted in the TeV range in the minimum model, which can be tested by the LHC experiments.

Direct Detection of Ultralight Dark Matter via Astronomical Ephemeris

A novel idea of the direct detection to search for a ultralight dark matter based on the interaction between the dark matter and a nucleon is proposed. Solar system bodies feel the dark matter wind and it acts as a resistant force opposing their motions. The astronomical ephemeris of solar system bodies is so precise that it has a strong capability to detect a dark matter whose mass is much lighter than O(1) eV. We have estimated the resistant force based on the calculation of the elastic scattering cross section between the dark matter and the bodies beyond the Born approximation, and show that the astronomical ephemeris indeed put a very strong constraint on the interaction between the dark matter and a nucleon, depending on how smoothly the ultralight dark matter is distributed at the scale smaller than the celestial bodies in our solar system.

Current Status of Top-Specific Variant Axion Model

The invisible variant axion model is very attractive as it is free from the domain wall problem. This model requires at least two Higgs doublets at the electroweak scale, with one Higgs doublet carrying a nonzero Peccei-Quinn (PQ) charge and the other being neutral under the PQ $\text U(1)$ symmetry. We consider a scenario where only the right-handed top quark is charged under the PQ symmetry and couples with the PQ-charged Higgs doublet. As a general prediction of this model, the top quark can decay to the observed standard model-like Higgs boson $h$ and the charm or up quark, $t\to h~ c/u$, which recently exhibit slight excesses at LHC Run-I and Run-II. It will soon be testable at the LHC Run-II. If the rare top decay excess stays at the observed central value, we show that $\tan β\sim 1$ or smaller is preferred by the Higgs data. The chiral nature of the Higgs flavor-changing interaction is a distinctive feature, and can be tested using the angular distribution of the $t \to ch$ decays at the LHC.

A "Gauged" $U(1)$ Peccei-Quinn Symmetry

The Peccei-Quinn (PQ) solution to the strong $CP$ problem requires an anomalous global $U(1)$ symmetry, the PQ symmetry. The origin of such a convenient global symmetry is quite puzzling from the theoretical point of view in many aspects. In this paper, we propose a simple prescription which provides an origin of the PQ symmetry. There, the global $U(1)$ PQ symmetry is virtually embedded in a gauged $U(1)$ PQ symmetry. Due to its simplicity, this mechanism can be implemented in many conventional models with the PQ symmetry.

Higgsino Dark Matter or Not: Role of Disappearing Track Searches at the LHC and Future Colliders

Higgsino in supersymmetric standard models is known to be a promising candidate for dark matter in the Universe. Its phenomenological property is strongly affected by the gaugino fraction in the Higgsino-like state. If this is sizable, in other words, if gaugino masses are less than ${\cal O}(10)$ TeV, we may probe the Higgsino dark matter in future non-accelerator experiments such as dark matter direct searches and measurements of electric dipole moments. On the other hand, if gauginos are much heavier, then it is hard to search for Higgsino in these experiments. In this case, due to a lack of gaugino components, the mass difference between the neutral and charged Higgsinos is uniquely determined by electroweak interactions to be around $350$ MeV, which makes the heavier charged state rather long-lived, with a decay length of about $1$ cm. In this letter, we argue that a charged particle with a flight length of ${\cal O}(1)$ cm can be probed in disappearing-track searches if we require only two hits in the pixel detector. Even in this case, we can reduce background events with the help of the displaced-vertex reconstruction technique. We study the prospects of this search strategy at the LHC and future colliders for the Higgsino dark matter scenario. It is found that an almost pure Higgsino is indeed within the reach of the future $33$ TeV collider experiments. We then discuss that the interplay among collider and non-accelerator experiments plays a crucial role in testing the Higgsino dark matter scenarios. Our strategy for disappearing-track searches can also enlarge the discovery potential of pure wino dark matter as well as other electroweak-charged dark matter candidates.

Dark Matter Candidates in a Visible Heavy QCD Axion Model

In this paper, we discuss dark matter candidates in a visible heavy QCD axion model. There, a mirror copied sector of the Standard Model with mass scales larger than the Standard Model is introduced. By larger mass scales of the mirrored sector, the QCD axion is made heavy via the axial anomaly in the mirrored sector without spoiling the Peccei-Quinn mechanism to solve the strong $CP$-problem. Since the mirror copied sector possesses the same symmetry structure with the Standard Model sector, the model predicts multiple stable particles. As we will show, the mirrored charged pion and the mirrored electron can be viable candidates for dark matter. They serve as self-interacting dark matter with a long range force. We also show that the mirrored neutron can be lighter than the mirrored proton in a certain parameter region. There, the mirrored neutron can also be a viable dark matter candidate when its mass is around $100$ TeV. It is also shown that the mirrored neutrino can also be a viable candidate for dark matter.

Cracking Down on Fake Photons - A Case of 750 GeV Diphoton Resonance -

Among various models to explain the $750$ GeV diphoton resonance hinted at the LHC Run 2, a class of models where the resonance decays not into a pair of photons but into a pair of photon-jets is gathering definite attention. In this paper, we study how well we can distinguish the di-photon-jet resonance from the diphoton resonance by examining detector responses to the photon-jets. We find that the sum of $p_T$ of the first $e^+e^-$ pair from the photon conversion provides strong discrimination power. We also discuss determination of the lifetime of the light intermediate particle by measuring the photon conversion points.

750 GeV diphoton resonance in a visible heavy QCD axion model

In this paper, we revisit a visible heavy QCD axion model in light of the recent reports on the $750$ GeV diphoton resonance by the ATLAS and CMS experiments. In this model, the axion is made heavy with the help of the mirror copied sector of the Standard Model while the successful Peccei-Quinn mechanism is kept intact. We identify the $750$ GeV resonance as the scalar boson associated with spontaneous breaking of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry which mainly decays into a pair of the axions. We find that the mixings between the axion and $η$ and $η'$ play important roles in its decays and the resultant branching ratio into two photons. The axion decay length can be suitable for explaining the diphoton excess by the di-axion production when its decay constant $f_a \simeq 1$ TeV. We also find that our model allows multiple sets of the extra fermions without causing the domain wall problem, which is advantageous to explain the diphoton signal.

Diboson Resonance as a Portal to Hidden Strong Dynamics

We propose a new explanation for excess events observed in the search for a high-mass resonance decaying into dibosons by the ATLAS experiment. The resonance is identified as a composite spin-$0$ particle that couples to the Standard Model gauge bosons via dimension-5 operators. The excess events can be explained if the dimension-5 operators are suppressed by a mass scale of ${\cal O}(1$-$10$) TeV. We also construct a model of hidden strong gauge dynamics which realizes the spin-$0$ particle as its lightest composite state, with appropriate couplings to Standard Model gauge bosons.

Seminatural Gauge Mediation from Product Group Unification

We propose a focus point gauge mediation model based on the product group unification (PGU), which solves the doublet-triplet splitting problem of the Higgs multiplets. In the focus point gauge mediation, the electroweak symmetry breaking scale can be naturally explained even for multi-TeV stops. It is known that the focus point behavior appears if a ratio of the number of SU(2) doublet messengers to that of SU(3) triplet messengers is close to 5/2. Importantly, this ratio (effectively) appears in our scenario based on the PGU, if the messenger field is an adjoint representation of SU(5) gauge group. Therefore, our focus point scenario is very predictive. It is also pointed out the gravitino can be dark matter without spoiling the success of the thermal leptogenesis. The absence of the SUSY CP-problem is guaranteed in the case that the Higgs B-term vanishes at the messenger scale.

Flavor-Changing Neutral-Current Decays in Top-Specific Variant Axion Model

The invisible variant axion model is very attractive as it is free from the domain wall problem. This model requires two Higgs doublets at the electroweak scale where one Higgs doublet carries a nonzero Peccei-Quinn (PQ) charge and the other is neutral under the PQ $\text U(1)$ symmetry. We consider the most interesting and less constrained scenario of the variant axion model, where only the right-handed top quark is charged under the PQ symmetry and couples with the PQ-charged Higgs doublet. As a result, the top quark can decay to the observed standard-model-like Higgs boson $h$ and the charm or up quark, $t\to h~ c/u$, which is testable soon at the LHC Run-II. Moreover, we propose a method to probe the chiral nature of the Higgs flavor-changing interaction using the angular distribution of $t \to ch$ decays if a sufficient number of such events are observed. We also show that our model has the capacity to explain the $h\toτμ$ decay reported by the CMS Collaboration, if the right-handed tau lepton also carries a PQ charge and couples to the PQ-charged Higgs boson.

A Model of Visible QCD Axion

We pursue a class of visible axion models where the axion mass is enhanced by strong dynamics in a mirrored copy of the Standard Model in the line of the idea put forward by Rubakov. In particular, we examine the consistency of the models with laboratory, astrophysical, and cosmological constraints. As a result, viable parameter regions are found, where the mass of the axion is of $O(100)$ MeV or above while the Peccei-Quinn breaking scale is at around $10^{3\mbox{-}5}$ GeV.

Does asymmetric dark matter always lead to an anti-neutrino signal?

Under rather generic assumptions, we show that in the asymmetric dark matter (ADM) scenario, the sign of the B-L asymmetry stored in the dark matter sector and the standard model sector are always the same. One particularly striking consequence of this result is that, when the dark matter decays or annihilates in the present universe, the resulting final state always involves an anti-neutrino. As a concrete example of this, we construct a composite ADM model and explore the feasibility of detecting such an anti-neutrino signal in atmospheric neutrino detectors.
