Anomalously Soft Droplets and Aging in Short-ranged Spin Glasses

We extend the standard droplet scaling theory for isothermal aging in spin glasses assuming that the effective stiffness constant of droplets as large as extended defects is vanishingly small. A novel dynamical order parameter and the associated dynamical susceptibility emerge. Breaking of the fluctuation dissipation theorem takes place at the dynamical order parameter well below the equilibrium Edwards-Anderson order parameter at which the time translational invariance is strongly broken. The scenario is examined numerically in a 4 dimensional EA Ising spin glass model.

Extended droplet theory for aging in short-ranged spin glasses and a numerical examination

We analyze isothermal aging of a four dimensional Edwards-Anderson model in detail by Monte Carlo simulations. We analyze the data in the view of an extended version of the droplet theory proposed recently (cond-mat/0202110) which is based on the original droplet theory plus conjectures on the anomalously soft droplets in the presence of domain walls. We found that the scaling laws including some fundamental predictions of the original droplet theory explain well our results. The results of our simulation strongly suggest the separation of the breaking of the time translational invariance and the fluctuation dissipation theorem in agreement with our scenario.

Brownian Dynamics Studies on DNA Gel Electrophoresis. I. Numerical Method and Quasi-Periodic Behavior of Elongation-Contraction Motions

Dynamics of individual DNA undergoing constant field gel electrophoresis (CFGE) is studied by a Brownian dynamics (BD) simulation method which we have developed. The method simulates electrophoresis of DNA in a 3 dimensional (3D) space by a chain of electrolyte beads of hard spheres. Under the constraint that the separation of each pair of bonded beads is restricted to be less than a certain fixed value, as well as with the excluded volume effect, the Langevin equation of motion for the beads is solved by means of the Lagrangian multiplier method. The resultant mobilities, $μ$, as a function of the electric field coincide satisfactorily with the corresponding experimental results, once the time, the length and the field of the simulation are properly scaled. In relatively strong fields quasi-periodic behavior is found in the chain dynamics, and is examined through the time evolution of the radius of the longer principal axis, $R_l(t)$. It is found that the mean width of a peak in $R_l(t)$, or a period of one elongation-contraction process of the chain, is proportional to the number of beads in the chain, $M$, while the mean period between two such adjacent peaks is proportional to $M^0$ for large $M$. These results, combined with the observation that the chain moves to the field direction by the distance proportional to $M$ in each elongation-contraction motion, yield $μ\propto M^0$. This explains why CFGE cannot separate DNA according to their size $L (\propto M)$ for large $L$.

Bond-Dilution Effects on Two-Dimensional Spin-Gapped Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

Bond-dilution effects on spin-1/2 spin-gapped Heisenberg antiferromagnets of coupled alternating chains on a square lattice are investigated by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method. It is found that, in contrast with the site-diluted system having an infinitesimal critical concentration, the bond-diluted system has a finite critical concentration of diluted bonds, $x_{c}$, above which the system is in an antiferromagnetic (AF) long-range ordered phase. In the disordered phase below $x_{c}$, plausibly in the concentration region significantly less than $x_{c}$, the system has a spin gap due to singlet pairs of induced magnetic moments reformed by the AF interactions through the two-dimensional shortest paths.

Ground-State Phase Diagram of Quantum Heisenberg Antiferromagnets on the Anisotropic Dimerized Square Lattice

The S=1/2 and S=1 two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the anisotropic dimerized square lattice are investigated by the quantum Monte Carlo method. By finite-size-scaling analyses on the correlation lengths, the ground-state phase diagram parametrized by strengths of the dimerization and of the spatial anisotropy is determined much more accurately than the previous works. It is confirmed that the quantum critical phenomena on the phase boundaries belong to the same universality class as that of the classical three-dimensional Heisenberg model. Furthermore, for S=1, we show that all the spin-gapped phases, such as the Haldane and dimer phases, are adiabatically connected in the extended parameter space, though they are classified into different classes in terms of the string order parameter in the one-dimensional, i.e., the zero-interchain-coupling, case.

Real-Space Renormalization Group Study of Effects of Anisotropy on S=1 Random Antiferromagnetic Chain

We investigate S=1 antiferromagnetic quantum spin chain, whose exchange couplings are strongly disordered. By the real-space renomalization group method, introduced by Ma, Dasgupta, and Hu, the renormalization group flows are analyzed numerically in a plain of the anisotoropy of the exchange coupling vs. the staggered magnetic field. As the result, the Heisenberg point, which has a zero average of the exchange coupling anisotropy, is specified as the unstable fixed point against the anisotropy.

Plaquette-singlet solid state and topological hidden order in spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladder

Ground-state properties of the spin-1 two-leg antiferromagnetic ladder are investigated precisely by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method. It is found that the correlation length along the chains and the spin gap both remain finite regardless of the strength of interchain coupling, i.e., the Haldane state and the spin-1 dimer state are connected smoothly without any quantum phase transitions between them. We propose a plaquette-singlet solid state, which qualitatively describes the ground state of the spin-1 ladder quite well, and also a corresponding topological hidden order parameter. It is shown numerically that the new hidden order parameter remains finite up to the dimer limit, though the conventional string order defined on each chain vanishes immediately when infinitesimal interchain coupling is introduced.

Site-Dilution-Induced Antiferromagnetic Long-Range Order in Two-Dimensional Spin-Gapped Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Effects of the site dilution on spin-gapped Heisenberg antiferromagnets with $S=1/2$ and S=1 on a square lattice are investigated by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method. It is found that effective magnetic moments induced around the diluted sites exhibit the antiferromagnetic long-range order in the medium of spin-singlet pairs. Their microscopic structure is examined in detail and important roles of the higher dimensionality than one on the phenomenon are discussed.

Aging of the Zero-Field-Cooled Magnetization in Ising Spin Glasses: Experiment and Numerical Simulation

A new protocol of the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) magnetization process is studied experimentally on an Ising spin-glass (SG) Fe$_{0.50}$Mn$_{0.50}$TiO$_3$ and numerically on the Edwards-Anderson Ising SG model. Although the time scales differ very much between the experiment and the simulation, the behavior of the ZFC magnetization observed in the two systems can be interpreted by means of a common scaling expression based on the droplet picture. The results strongly suggest that the SG coherence length, or the mean size of droplet excitations, involved even in the experimental ZFC process, is about a hundred lattice distances or less.

Numerical Study on Aging Dynamics in Ising Spin-Glass Models: Temperature-Change Protocols

By means of Monte Carlo simulations on the three-dimensional Ising spin-glass model, we have studied aging phenomena with various temperature($T$)-change protocols. Particularly, a $T$-shift protocol, in which a system is first quenched to and aged for a period $t_{\rm w1}$ at a temperature $T_1$, and subsequently aged at a new temperature $T_2$ is closely investigated. Most importantly, the mean size of domains, which is extracted from the replica-overlap function, was found to grow monotonically without any appreciable decrease by the $T$-change. We also found the relaxation of energy density and spin auto-correlation function during the $T$-shift process can be explained within the following picture: the dynamics finally crossovers to an isothermal aging of $T_2$ at around $t_2 \simeq t_{\rm w1}^{\rm (eff)}$ after the $T$-change, where $t_{\rm w1}^{\rm (eff)}$ is an effective waiting time related with $t_{\rm w1}$, but in the transient regime $t_2 \lt t_{\rm w1}^{\rm (eff)}$, adjustment of the population of thermally active droplets from that at $T_1$ to $T_2$ takes place very slowly. Implications of the results on aging phenomena in other $T$-change protocols such as $T$-cycling and continuous $T$-change with an intermittent stop observed by simulations as well as experiments are discussed.

Numerical Study on Aging Dynamics in the 3D Ising Spin-Glass Model. II. Quasi-Equilibrium Regime of Spin Auto-Correlation Function

Using Monte Carlo simulations, we have studied isothermal aging of three-dimensional Ising spin-glass model focusing on quasi-equilibrium behavior of the spin auto-correlation function. Weak violation of the time translational invariance in the quasi-equilibrium regime is analyzed in terms of {\it effective stiffness} for droplet excitations in the presence of domain walls. Within the range of computational time window, we have confirmed that the effective stiffness follows the expected scaling behavior with respect to the characteristic length scales associated with droplet excitations and domain walls, whose growth law has been extracted from our simulated data. Implication of the results are discussed in relation to experimental works on ac susceptibilities.

Numerical Study of Aging Phenomena in Short-Ranged Spin Glasses

Aging phenomena of short-range Ising spin glass models have been investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that in the low-temperature spin-glass phase the mean domain size exhibits a crossover from a power-law growth associated with the critical fluctuation at the transition temperature to slower growth inherent in the low-temperature phase. The temperature dependence of the growth law of the domain size can be almost explained by this crossover. We also find that the spin-autocorrelation function in the quasi-equilibrium regime follows the expected scaling behavior from the droplet theory expressed in terms of the mean domain size and a characteristic length scale of droplet excitations.

Diffusion of single long polymers in fixed and low density matrix of obstacles confined to two dimensions

Diffusion properties of a self-avoiding polymer embedded in regularly distributed obstacles with spacing a=20 and confined in two dimensions is studied numerically using the extended bond fluctuation method which we have developed recently. We have observed for the first time to our knowledge, that the mean square displacement of a center monomer $ϕ_{M/2}(t)$ exhibits four dynamical regimes, i.e., $ϕ_{M/2}(t) \sim t^{ν_m}$ with $ν_m\sim 0.6$, 3/8, 3/4, and 1 from the shortest to longest time regimes. The exponents in the second and third regimes are well described by segmental diffusion in the ``self-avoiding tube''. In the fourth (free diffusion) regime, we have numerically confirmed the relation between the reptation time $τ_d$ and the number of segments $M, τ_d\propto M^3$.

Numerical Study on Aging Dynamics in the 3D Ising Spin-Glass Model. I. Energy Relaxation and Domain Coarsening

Using Monte Carlo simulations, we have studied the relaxation of energy of the three-dimensional Ising spin-glass model in aging process. Our finite-size-scaling analysis on the isothermal energy decay after the quench suggests strongly that the energy relaxes by coarsening of domain walls in agreement with the droplet theory. We have also evaluated relaxation times required for spin configurations in small systems, which are regarded as isolated droplets, to flip globally. The results support the fundamental assumption of the droplet theory that coarsening of domain walls, in case of spin glasses, is driven by successive nucleation of thermally activated droplets.

A new bond fluctuation method for a polymer undergoing gel electrophoresis

We present a new computational methodology for the investigation of gel electrophoresis of polyelectrolytes. We have developed the method initially to incorporate sliding motion of tight parts of a polymer pulled by an electric field into the bond fluctuation method (BFM). Such motion due to tensile force over distances much larger than the persistent length is realized by non-local movement of a slack monomer at an either end of the tight part. The latter movement is introduced stochastically. This new BFM overcomes the well-known difficulty in the conventional BFM that polymers are trapped by gel fibers in relatively large fields. At the same time it also reproduces properly equilibrium properties of a polymer in a vanishing filed limit. The new BFM thus turns out an efficient computational method to study gel electrophoresis in a wide range of the electric field strength.

Quantum Monte Carlo Study of Random Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chain

Effects of randomness on the spin-1/2 and 1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains are studied using the quantum Monte Carlo method with the continuous-time loop algorithm. We precisely calculated the uniform susceptibility, string order parameter, spatial and temporal correlation length, and the dynamical exponent, and obtained a phase diagram. The generalization of the continuous-time loop algorithm for the systems with higher-S spins is also presented.

Aging Processes within One `Pure State' of the SK Model

Monte Carlo simulations on the SK model have been done to investigate aging processes after a rapid quench from $T=\infty$ to the spin-glass phase. The time range of simulations is taken care of so that the system does not surmount free-energy barriers between the pure states which are considered to diverge in the thermodynamic limit. We simulate time evolutions of extensive energy of the system, Parisi's overlap distribution function, auto-correlation and clones-correlation functions, distribution functions of the two correlations, and magnetization induced by the field applied after a certain waiting time. The data simulated exhibit a rich variety of aging phenomena. Most of them can be interpreted in a unified way, though qualitatively, by the scenario of ``growth of quasi-equilibrium domains'' which we will introduce in this work. More surprisingly, they suggest strongly that a basin of attraction of one dominant pure state spans almost an entire phase space of the system with a common time-reversal symmetry.
