Spatio-temporal scaling for out-of-equilibrium relaxation dynamics of an elastic manifold in random media: crossover between the Larkin regime and thermally activated regime

We study relaxation dynamics of a three dimensional elastic manifold in random potential from a uniform initial condition by numerically solving the Langevin equation. We observe growth of roughness of the system up to larger wavelengths with time.We analyze structure factor in detail and find a compact scaling ansatz describing two distinct time regimes and crossover between them. We find short time regime corresponding to length scale smaller than the Larkin length $L_c$ is well described by the Larkin model which predicts a power law growth of domain size $L(t)$. Longer time behavior exhibits the random manifold regime with slower growth of $L(t)$.

Step-wise responses in mesoscopic glassy systems: a mean field approach

We study statistical properties of peculiar responses in glassy systems at mesoscopic scales based on a class of mean-field spin-glass models which exhibit 1 step replica symmetry breaking. Under variation of a generic external field, a finite-sized sample of such a system exhibits a series of step wise responses which can be regarded as a finger print of the sample. We study in detail the statistical properties of the step structures based on a low temperature expansion approach and a replica approach. The spacings between the steps vanish in the thermodynamic limit so that arbitrary small but finite variation of the field induce infinitely many level crossings in the thermodynamic limit leading to a static chaos effect which yields a self-averaging, smooth macroscopic response. We also note that there is a strong analogy between the problem of step-wise responses in glassy systems at mesoscopic scales and intermittency in turbulent flows due to shocks.

Non-linear rheology of layered systems - a phase model approach

We study non-linear rheology of a simple theoretical model developed to mimic layered systems such as lamellar structures under shear. In the present work we study a 2-dimensional version of the model which exhibits a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in equilibrium at a critical temperature Tc. While the system behaves as Newtonain fluid at high temperatures T > Tc, it exhibits shear thinning at low temperatures T < Tc. The non-linear rheology in the present model is understood as due to motions of edge dislocations and resembles the non-linear transport phenomena in superconductors by vortex motions.

Periodicity and criticality in the Olami-Feder-Christensen model of earthquakes

Characteristic versus critical features of earthquakes are studied on the basis of the Olami-Feder-Christensen model. It is found that the local recurrence-time distribution exhibits a sharp $δ$-function-like peak corresponding to rhythmic recurrence of events with a fixed ``period'' uniquely determined by the transmission parameter of the model, together with a power-law-like tail corresponding to scale-free recurrence of events. The model exhibits phenomena closely resembling the asperity known in seismology.

Non-linear susceptibilities of spherical models

The static and dynamic susceptibilities for a general class of mean field random orthogonal spherical spin glass models are studied. We show how the static and dynamical properties of the linear and nonlinear susceptibilities depend on the behaviour of the density of states of the two body interaction matrix in the neighbourhood of the largest eigenvalue. Our results are compared with experimental results and also with those of the droplet theory of spin glasses.

Chaos in Glassy Systems from a TAP Perspective

We discuss level crossing of the free-energy of TAP solutions under variations of external parameters such as magnetic field or temperature in mean-field spin-glass models that exhibit one-step Replica-Symmetry-Breaking (1RSB). We study the problem through a generalized complexity that describes the density of TAP solutions at a given value of the free-energy and a given value of the extensive quantity conjugate to the external parameter. We show that variations of the external parameter by any finite amount can induce level crossing between groups of TAP states whose free-energies are extensively different. In models with 1RSB, this means strong chaos with respect to the perturbation. The linear-response induced by extensive level crossing is self-averaging and its value matches precisely with the disorder-average of the non self-averaging anomaly computed from the 2nd moment of thermal fluctuations between low-lying, almost degenerate TAP states. We present an analytical recipe to compute the generalized complexity and test the scenario on the spherical multi-$p$ spin models under variation of temperature.

Possibility of the Solid-Fluid Transition in Moving Periodic Systems

The steady sliding state of periodic structures such as charge density waves and flux line lattices is numerically studied based on two and three dimensional driven random field XY models. We focus on the dynamical phase transition between plastic flow and moving solid phases controlled by the magnitude of the driving force. By analyzing the connectivity of co-moving clusters, we find that they percolate the system within a finite observation time under driving forces larger than a certain critical force. The critical force, however, logarithmically diverges with the observation time, i.e. the moving solid phase exhibits only within a certain finite time, which exponentially grows with the driving force.

Fluctuations in the coarsening dynamics of the O(N) model: are they similar to those in glassy systems?

We study spatio-temporal fluctuations in the non-equilibrium dynamics of the d dimensional O(N) in the large N limit. We analyse the invariance of the dynamic equations for the global correlation and response in the slow ageing regime under transformations of time. We find that these equations are invariant under scale transformations. We extend this study to the action in the dynamic generating functional finding similar results. This model therefore falls into a different category from glassy problems in which full time-reparametrisation invariance, a larger symmetry that emcompasses time scale invariance, is expected to be realised asymptotically. Consequently, the spatio-temporal fluctuations of the large N O(N) model should follow a different pattern from that of glassy systems. We compute the fluctuations of local, as well as spatially separated, two-field composite operators and responses, and we confront our results with the ones found numerically for the 3d Edwards-Anderson model and kinetically constrained lattice gases. We analyse the dependence of the fluctuations of the composite operators on the growing domain length and we compare to what has been found in super-cooled liquids and glasses. Finally, we show that the development of time-reparametrisation invariance in glassy systems is intimately related to a well-defined and finite effective temperature, specified from the modification of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem out of equilibrium. We then conjecture that the global asymptotic time-reparametrisation invariance is broken down to time scale invariance in all coarsening systems.

Numerical study of the ordering of the +-J XY spin-glass ladder

The properties of the domain-wall energy and of the correlation length are studied numerically for the one-dimensional +-J XY spin glass on the two-leg ladder lattice, focusing on both the spin and the chirality degrees of freedom. Analytic results obtained by Ney-Niftle et al for the same model were confirmed for asymptotically large lattices, while the approach to the asymptotic limit is slow and sometimes even non-monotonic. Attention is called to the occurrence of the SO(2)-Z_2 decoupling and its masking in spin correlations, the latter reflecting the inequality between the SO(2) and Z_2 exponents. Discussion is given concerning the behaviors of the higher-dimensional models.

Scaling approach to glassy stationary states of spin-glasses under chaos effects

Dynamics of spin-glasses subjected to slow continuous changes of working enviroment such as slow changes of temperature or interaction bonds are studied based on scaling arguments and numerical simulations of continuous bond changes. Such perturbations lead to a glassy stationary state where the age or domain size of the system are pinned to macroscopic but finite values due to competition between relaxation and chaos effects (rejuvenation). Flutuation-dissipation relation is also pinned to that of a finite age. The scenario explains the anomalously weak cooling rate dependece of spin glasses.

Dynamics of ghost domains in spin-glasses

We revisit the problem of how spin-glasses ``heal'' after being exposed to tortuous perturbations by the temperature/bond chaos effects in temperature/bond cycling protocols. Revised scaling arguments suggest the amplitude of the order parameter within ghost domains recovers very slowly as compared with the rate it is reduced by the strong perturbations. The parallel evolution of the order parameter and the size of the ghost domains can be examined in simulations and experiments by measurements of a memory auto-correlation function which exhibits a ``memory peak'' at the time scale of the age imprinted in the ghost domains. These expectations are confirmed by Monte Calro simulations of an Edwards-Anderson Ising spin-glass model.

A real space renormalization group approach to spin glass dynamics

The slow non-equilibrium dynamics of the Edwards-Anderson spin glass model on a hierarchical lattice is studied by means of a coarse-grained description based on renormalization concepts. We evaluate the isothermal aging properties and show how the occurrence of temperature chaos is connected to a gradual loss of memory when approaching the overlap length. This leads to rejuvenation effects in temperature shift protocols and to rejuvenation--memory effects in temperature cycling procedures with a pattern of behavior parallel to experimental observations.

Anomalously Soft Droplets and Aging in Short-ranged Spin Glasses

We extend the standard droplet scaling theory for isothermal aging in spin glasses assuming that the effective stiffness constant of droplets as large as extended defects is vanishingly small. A novel dynamical order parameter and the associated dynamical susceptibility emerge. Breaking of the fluctuation dissipation theorem takes place at the dynamical order parameter well below the equilibrium Edwards-Anderson order parameter at which the time translational invariance is strongly broken. The scenario is examined numerically in a 4 dimensional EA Ising spin glass model.

Extended droplet theory for aging in short-ranged spin glasses and a numerical examination

We analyze isothermal aging of a four dimensional Edwards-Anderson model in detail by Monte Carlo simulations. We analyze the data in the view of an extended version of the droplet theory proposed recently (cond-mat/0202110) which is based on the original droplet theory plus conjectures on the anomalously soft droplets in the presence of domain walls. We found that the scaling laws including some fundamental predictions of the original droplet theory explain well our results. The results of our simulation strongly suggest the separation of the breaking of the time translational invariance and the fluctuation dissipation theorem in agreement with our scenario.

Fragility of the Free-Energy Landscape of a Directed Polymer in Random Media

We examine the sensitiveness of the free-energy landscape of a directed polymer in random media with respect to various kinds of infinitesimally weak perturbation including the intriguing case of temperature-chaos. To this end, we combine the replica Bethe ansatz approach outlined in cond-mat/0112384, the mapping to a modified Sinai model and numerically exact calculations by the transfer-matrix method. Our results imply that for all the perturbations under study there is a slow crossover from a weakly perturbed regime where rare events take place to a strongly perturbed regime at larger length scales beyond the so called overlap length where typical events take place leading to chaos, i.e. a complete reshuffling of the free-energy landscape. Within the replica space, the evidence for chaos is found in the factorization of the replicated partition function induced by infinitesimal perturbations. This is the reflex of explicit replica symmetry breaking.

Fragility of the glassy state of a directed polymer in random media: a replica approach

We study the stability of the glassy equilibrium state of a directed polymer in random media against weak perturbations including the intriguing problem of temperature-chaos. The statistical correlation of two real replica systems under perturbations, such as small difference of temperature, is studied using the mapping to a quantum problem of interacting bosons. Explicit replica symmetry breaking takes place being induced by the infinitesimally weak perturbations in the $n \to 0$ limit followed by the thermodynamic limit which leads to complete decorrelation of the two real replicas. The overlap lengths anticipated by phenomenological scaling arguments are retrieved as a correlation length associated with this explicit replica symmetry breaking.

Multiple Domain Growth and Memory in the Droplet Model for Spin-Glasses

We study domain growth dynamics when the target state is suddenly changed on all length scales. This procedure mimics the `chaos' effect postulated by the droplet theory of spin-glasses, and allows us to investigate in details its various dynamical consequences. We study the problem by a variety of methods, including scaling arguments, analytical solution of the spherical Mattis model, and Monte Carlo simulations of a 2-dimensional Ising Mattis model. We show that successive coarsening with respect to different equilibrium states imprints multiple domain structures on top of each other, plus extra noise due to random interferences. We demonstrate that the domain structures can be retrieved by an additional series of coarsening in the reversed order which removes the noises. We discuss the rejuvenation (chaos) and memory effects observed in temperature-cycling experiments in glassy systems from the present point of view, and discuss some open problems and alternative descriptions.

Aging of the Zero-Field-Cooled Magnetization in Ising Spin Glasses: Experiment and Numerical Simulation

A new protocol of the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) magnetization process is studied experimentally on an Ising spin-glass (SG) Fe$_{0.50}$Mn$_{0.50}$TiO$_3$ and numerically on the Edwards-Anderson Ising SG model. Although the time scales differ very much between the experiment and the simulation, the behavior of the ZFC magnetization observed in the two systems can be interpreted by means of a common scaling expression based on the droplet picture. The results strongly suggest that the SG coherence length, or the mean size of droplet excitations, involved even in the experimental ZFC process, is about a hundred lattice distances or less.
