Communication Channel Modelling of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Wireless communication channel characterization for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is essential for reliable control, data transmission, and mission performance in civil, industrial, and defence applications. Channel behaviour is examined using a measurement-based approach that captures both large-scale propagation effects, represented by path loss, and small-scale characteristics, represented by the channel impulse response (CIR) and power delay profile (PDP). An SDR-based channel sounding system is employed to collect and process in-phase and quadrature (IQ) data, enabling the extraction of key channel parameters. Following system verification, measurements are conducted in ground-to-ground (G2G), air-to-ground (A2G), and air-to-air (A2A) scenarios. The results demonstrate that path loss alone is insufficient to describe UAV communication channels, as CIR and PDP provide additional insight into multipath propagation and delay-domain behaviour. The findings indicate that realistic UAV channel models should incorporate both large-scale and small-scale channel statistics. Further improvements may be achieved through increased sounding bandwidth, enhanced synchronization, measurements in a wider range of environments, and more detailed analysis of Doppler effects.

RAG-driven Multi-Agent LLM Framework with Task Decomposition for Beyond 5G Auto-Configuration

While Large Language Models (LLMs) offer a promising path toward intent-driven network management by translating natural language human intents into machine-readable configurations, they often suffer from hallucinations and structural inconsistencies in multi-step and complex tasks. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a retrieval-augmented and task decomposition-based multi-agent LLM framework for Beyond 5G network auto-configuration. The framework employs a semantic retrieval-augmented generation pipeline to ensure that its outputs are aligned with technical standards and vendor-specific manuals. Furthermore, it introduces a modular architecture for configuration generation, closed-loop configuration verification, and network deployment, in which complex tasks are decomposed into smaller sub-tasks handled by specialized agents. In this architecture, hallucinated configuration parameters are identified by the configuration verifier agent and corrected through low computational segment-level regeneration. The performance evaluation experiments with the OpenAirInterface emulator demonstrate that the proposed task decomposition-based configuration and verification approach improves the average success rate by 22.7% over monolithic methods, achieving 94.4% success in network configuration.

RAG-Empowered LLM-Driven Dynamic Radio Resource Management in Open 6G RAN

Implications of the advancements in the area of artificial intelligence to the wireless communications is extremely significant, especially in terms of resource management. In this paper, a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)-empowered Large Language Model (ReLLM)-driven dynamic radio resource management framework for Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) inspired 6G networks is proposed. The introduced methodology leverages the ReLLM framework to interpret both historical and real-time network data, enabling adaptive control of network slices. The ReLLM is founded on two specialized agents, one is responsible for proactively detecting service level agreement (SLA) violations by continuously monitoring and estimating slice-specific performance metrics, and the other one is responsible for dynamically reallocating physical resource blocks when the SLA violation probability exceeds a pre-defined threshold. The primary objective of this dual-agent design is to minimize unnecessary LLM inference calls while satisfying the SLA requirements of the slices, thereby improving computational and energy efficiency. The proposed ReLLM framework is implemented and validated on an end-to-end O-RAN testbed built upon open-source OpenAirInterface emulators. The experimental results demonstrate that the LLM approach with its reduced token consumption feature maintains a near-zero drop ratio for the low-priority slice while simultaneously satisfying acceptable latency performance for the high-priority slice. The ReLLM-driven design improves reliability and SLA compliance, confirming its practicality for real-world O-RAN testbeds and its potential applicability to future 6G networks.

Measurement-based Channel Characterization for A2A and A2G Wireless Drone Communication Systems

This paper presents field measurement-based channel characterization for air--to--ground (A2G) and air--to--air (A2A) wireless communication systems using two drones equipped with lightweight software-defined radios. A correlation-based channel sounder is employed such that the transmitting drone broadcasts the sounding waveform with a pseudo-noise sequence and the receiving drone captures the sounding waveform together with the location information for the post-processing analysis. The path loss results demonstrate that the measurement and flat-earth two-ray results have similar trends for A2G while the measurement and free space path loss are similar to each other for A2A. The time delays between the direct path and multipath components are widely spread for A2A while the multipath components are mostly concentrated around the direct path for A2G generating a more challenging communication environment. We observe that the reflections from several buildings having metal roofs and claddings on the measurement site cause sudden peaks in the root-mean-square delay spread. The results indicate that the A2A channel has better characteristics than the A2G under similar mobility conditions.

Deep Convolutional Learning-Aided Detector for Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing with Index Modulation

In this paper, a deep convolutional neural network-based symbol detection and demodulation is proposed for generalized frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (GFDM-IM) scheme in order to improve the error performance of the system. The proposed method first pre-processes the received signal by using a zero-forcing (ZF) detector and then uses a neural network consisting of a convolutional neural network (CNN) followed by a fully-connected neural network (FCNN). The FCNN part uses only two fully-connected layers, which can be adapted to yield a trade-off between complexity and bit error rate (BER) performance. This two-stage approach prevents the getting stuck of neural network in a saddle point and enables IM blocks processing independently. It has been demonstrated that the proposed deep convolutional neural network-based detection and demodulation scheme provides better BER performance compared to ZF detector with a reasonable complexity increase. We conclude that non-orthogonal waveforms combined with IM schemes with the help of deep learning is a promising physical layer (PHY) scheme for future wireless networks

Reference Signal-Aided Channel Estimation in Spatial Media-Based Modulation Systems

In this letter, we study the reference signal-aided channel estimation concept which is a crucial requirement to address the realistic performance of spatial media-based modulation (SMBM) systems where the radio frequency mirrors are deployed along with the multiple transmit antennas. Accordingly, least squares and linear minimum mean square error-based channel estimation schemes are proposed for MBM-based systems for the first time in the literature where former studies mainly assume either perfect channel state information or an error model on channel coefficients. In addition, corresponding symbol detection performance is studied. To measure the efficiency of the proposed channel estimation approaches, the theoretical upper bounds on average bit error rate are derived and shown to be well overlapped with the computer simulations for the medium and high signal-to-noise ratio regions. This study is important due to the implementation of channel estimation as well as the theoretical derivation of detection bounds for MBM-based communication systems.

Measurement Based Statistical Channel Characterization of Air-to-Ground Path Loss Model at 446 MHz for Narrow-Band Signals in Low Altitude UAVs

Powered by the advances in microelectronics technologies, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provide a vast variety of services ranging from surveillance to delivery in both military and civilian domains. It is clear that a successful operation in those services relies heavily on wireless communication technologies. Even though wireless communication techniques could be considered to reach a certain level of maturity, wireless communication links including UAVs should be regarded in a different way due to the peculiar characteristics of UAVs such as agility in 3D spatial domain and versatility in modes of operation. Such mobility characteristics in a vast variety of environmental diversity render links including UAVs different from those in traditional, terrestrial mobility scenarios. Furthermore, UAVs are critical instruments for network operators in order to provide basic voice and short messaging services for narrow band communication in and around disaster areas. It is obvious that such widespread use of UAVs under different scenarios and environments requires a better understanding the behavior of the communication links that include UAVs. Therefore, in this study, details of a measurement campaign designed to collect data for large-scale propagation characterization of air-to-ground links operated by UAVs at 446MHz under narrowband assumption are given. Data collection, post-processing, and measurement results are provided.

Measurement based FHSS-type Drone Controller Detection at 2.4GHz: An STFT Approach

The applications of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) increase rapidly in everyday life, thus detecting the UAVs and/or its pilot is a crucial task. Many UAVs adopt frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) technology to efficiently and securely communicate with their radio controllers (RC) where the signal follows a hopping pattern to prevent harmful interference. In order to realistically distinguish the frequency hopping (FH) RC signals, one should consider the real-world radio propagation environment since many UAVs communicate with RCs from a far distance in which signal faces both slow and fast fading phenomenons. Therefore, in this study different from the literature, we consider a system that works under real-conditions by capturing over-the-air signals at hilly terrain suburban environments in the presence of foliages. We adopt the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) approach to capture the hopping sequence of each signal. Furthermore, time guards associated with each hopping sequence are calculated using the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the STFT which results in differentiating the each UAV RC signal accurately. In order to validate the performance of the proposed method, the results of normalized mean square error (MSE) respect to different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), window size and Tx-Rx separation values are given.
