Symbol Error Analysis of Linear Receivers in Terahertz Channels under Channel-Noise Dependence

This paper develops a comprehensive framework for the performance analysis of linear detectors, namely zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean-square error (MMSE), under diverse terahertz (THz) channel conditions. Three fading models are considered: Rayleigh fading, the $\alpha$--$\mu$ distribution for indoor THz environments, and the mixture-gamma (MG) distribution for outdoor THz scenarios. Semi-analytical, approximate, and asymptotic expressions for the symbol error rate (SER) are derived, explicitly incorporating the correlation between the channel and the additive noise arising from hardware impairments. This correlation is characterized using both statistical approaches and copula-based methods to effectively capture complex dependency structures. The theoretical findings are validated through simulations, demonstrating strong agreement with the derived expressions and confirming the accuracy and robustness of the proposed framework. The results demonstrate the significant impact of channel--noise dependence on THz-band receiver performance and verify the expected performance degradation of biased MMSE receivers in point-to-point links employing higher-order quadrature amplitude modulation. Specifically, at a target SER of $10^{-3}$, a 70\% correlation results in approximately a 6.5~dB degradation in the effective signal-to-noise ratio, with mismatched MMSE detection incurring an additional 1~dB loss compared to ZF. Nonetheless, MMSE offers enhanced numerical stability under severe channel fading conditions, where channel inversion causes noise amplification.

Performance and Complexity Analysis of Terahertz-Band MIMO Detection

Achieving terabit-per-second (Tbps) data rates in terahertz (THz)-band communications requires bridging the complexity gap in baseband transceiver design. This work addresses the signal processing challenges associated with data detection in THz-band multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We begin by analyzing the trade-offs between performance and complexity across various detection schemes and THz channel models, demonstrating significant complexity reduction by leveraging spatial parallelism across subspaces of correlated, typically ill-conditioned THz MIMO channels. We also derive accurate theoretical bounds on the detection error probability by incorporating THz-specific channel distributions and accounting for mismatches introduced by subspace decomposition. In addition, we propose a variation of subspace detectors that combines channel-matrix sorting, QR decomposition, and puncturing. Furthermore, under wideband THz UM-MIMO systems, we introduce a channel-matrix reuse strategy that minimizes exhaustive computations while maintaining reliable detection performance within a coherence bandwidth. Simulations over accurate THz channels show that the proposed efficient spatial parallelization schemes yield multi-dB performance gains, while the proposed reuse strategy offers significant computational savings with minimal performance degradation.

Performance Analysis of Linear Detection under Noise-Dependent Fast-Fading Channels

This paper presents a performance analysis framework for linear detection in fast-fading channels with possibly correlated channel and noise. The framework is both accurate and adaptable, making it well-suited for analyzing a wide range of channel and noise models. As such, it serves as a valuable tool for the design and evaluation of detection algorithms in next-generation wireless communication systems. By characterizing the distribution of the effective noise after zero-forcing filtering, we derive a semi-analytical and asymptotic expression for the symbol error rate under Rayleigh fading and channel-dependent additive circular complex Gaussian noise. The proposed approach demonstrates excellent agreement with integration-based benchmarks as confirmed by numerical simulations thus validating its accuracy. The framework is flexible and can be extended to various channel and noise models, offering a valuable tool for the design and analysis of detection algorithms in next-generation communication systems.

Performance Analysis of Data Detection in the THz-Band under Channel-Correlated Noise

We present a comprehensive symbol error rate (SER) analysis framework for link-level terahertz (THz)-band communication systems under linear zero-forcing (ZF) data detection. First, we derive the mismatched SER for indoor THz systems under independent channel and noise assumptions, calculating the probability density function of the ratio of Gaussian noise to $α$-$μ$ channels resulting from ZF filtering. Next, we derive the precise SER under correlated channel and noise conditions, modeling dependencies using the copula method. Finally, we evaluate the SER for THz channels with correlated distortion noise from hardware impairments. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed framework corrects for multi-dB SERs resulting from the channel-noise independence assumption.

Diversity Analysis for Terahertz Communication Systems under Small-Scale Fading

The terahertz (THz) band is a key enabler for future wireless systems, promising ultra-high data rates and dense spatial reuse. However, the reliability of THz links remains a major challenge due to severe path loss and small-scale fading effects, particularly in dynamic indoor and outdoor environments. This paper presents a comprehensive diversity analysis framework for THz communication systems under small-scale fading conditions. We model fading statistically using the generalized $\alpha$-$\mu$ distribution for indoor scenarios and the mixture of gamma (MG) model for outdoor propagation. We complement previous works that analyzed diversity under the $\alpha$-$\mu$ channels [1],[2]. In particular, we present new insights on diversity for the MG channel in addition to recovering the results of [2] using a different approach. Moreover, we derive asymptotic expressions for the bit error rate as a function of the inverse signal-to-noise ratio, recovering all of the $\alpha$-$\mu$ diversity results using a simpler approximation method. The analytical results are extensively validated through Monte Carlo simulations, demonstrating excellent agreement. Our findings show that diversity gains in THz systems are strongly influenced by the number of independent paths, the severity of fading, and frequency selectivity. The proposed framework provides system designers with clear guidelines for quantifying and optimizing diversity gains in emerging channel models, paving the way for more reliable high-frequency wireless links in next-generation networks.

Leveraging parallelizability and channel structure in THz-band, Tbps channel-code decoding

As advancements close the gap between current device capabilities and the requirements for terahertz (THz)-band communications, the demand for terabit-per-second (Tbps) circuits is on the rise. This paper addresses the challenge of achieving Tbps data rates in THz-band communications by focusing on the baseband computation bottleneck. We propose leveraging parallel processing and pseudo-soft information (PSI) across multicarrier THz channels for efficient channel code decoding. We map bits to transmission resources using shorter code-words to enhance parallelizability and reduce complexity. Additionally, we integrate channel state information into PSI to alleviate the processing overhead of soft decoding. Results demonstrate that PSI-aided decoding of 64-bit code-words halves the complexity of 128-bit hard decoding under comparable effective rates, while introducing a 4 dB gain at a $10^{-3}$ block error rate. The proposed scheme approximates soft decoding with significant complexity reduction at a graceful performance cost.

Performance Analysis of Outdoor THz Links under Mixture Gamma Fading with Misalignment

The precision of link-level theoretical performance analysis for emerging wireless communication paradigms is critical. Recent studies have demonstrated the excellent fitting capabilities of the mixture gamma (MG) distribution in representing small-scale fading in outdoor terahertz (THz)-band scenarios. Our study establishes an in-depth performance analysis for outdoor point-to-point THz links under realistic configurations, incorporating MG small-scale fading combined with the misalignment effect. We derive closed-form expressions for the bit-error probability, outage probability, and ergodic capacity. Furthermore, we conduct an asymptotic analysis of these metrics at high signal-to-noise ratios and derive the necessary convergence conditions. Simulation results, leveraging precise measurement-based channel parameters in various configurations, closely align with the derived analytical equations.

Bridging the complexity gap in Tbps-achieving THz-band baseband processing

Recent advances in electronic and photonic technologies have allowed efficient signal generation and transmission at terahertz (THz) frequencies. However, as the gap in THz-operating devices narrows, the demand for terabit-per-second (Tbps)-achieving circuits is increasing. Translating the available hundreds of gigahertz (GHz) of bandwidth into a Tbps data rate requires processing thousands of information bits per clock cycle at state-of-the-art clock frequencies of digital baseband processing circuitry of a few GHz. This paper addresses these constraints and emphasizes the importance of parallelization in signal processing, particularly for channel code decoding. By leveraging structured sub-spaces of THz channels, we propose mapping bits to transmission resources using shorter code-words, extending parallelizability across all baseband processing blocks. THz channels exhibit quasi-deterministic frequency, time, and space structures that enable efficient parallel bit mapping at the source and provide pseudo-soft bit reliability information for efficient detection and decoding at the receiver.

TeraMIMO: A Channel Simulator for Wideband Ultra-Massive MIMO Terahertz Communications

Following recent advances in terahertz (THz) technology, there is a consensus on the crucial role of THz communications in the next generation of wireless systems. Aiming at catalyzing THz communications research, we propose TeraMIMO, an accurate stochastic MATLAB simulator of statistical THz channels. We simulate ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output antenna configurations as critical infrastructure enablers that overcome the limitation in THz communications distances. We consider both line-of-sight and multipath components and propose frequency- and delay-domain implementations for single- and multi-carrier paradigms in both time-invariant and time-variant scenarios. We implement exhaustive molecular absorption computations based on radiative transfer theory alongside alternative sub-THz approximations. We further model THz-specific constraints, including wideband beam split effects, spherical wave propagation, and misalignment fading. We verify TeraMIMO by analogy with measurement-based channel models in the literature and ergodic capacity analysis. We introduce a graphical user interface and a guide for using TeraMIMO in THz channel generation and analyses.
