A Lightweight Machine Learning Assisted Power Optimization for Minimum Error in NOMA-CRS over Nakagami-$m$ channels

Non-orthogonal multiple access based cooperative relaying system (NOMA-CRS) has been proposed to alleviate the decay in spectral efficiency of the conventional CRS. However, existing NOMA-CRS studies assume perfect successive interference canceler at the relay and mostly investigate sum-rate whereas the error performance has not been taken into consideration. In this paper, we analyze error performance of the NOMA-CRS and the closed-form bit error probability (BEP) expression is derived over Nakagami-m fading channels. Then, thanks to the high performance of machine learning (ML) in challenging optimization problems, a joint power sharing-power allocation (PS-PA) scheme is proposed to minimize the bit error rate (BER) of the NOMA-CRS. The proposed ML-assisted optimization has a very low online implementation complexity. Based on provided extensive simulations, theoretical BEP analysis is validated. Besides, the proposed ML-aided PS-PA provides minimum BER (MBER) and outperforms previous PA strategies for the NOMA-CRS notably.

Link Budget Analysis for Reconfigurable Smart Surfaces in Aerial Platforms

Non-terrestrial networks, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) and Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites, are expected to have a pivotal role in the sixth generation wireless networks. With their inherent features such as flexible placement, wide footprint, and preferred channel conditions, they can tackle several challenges in current terrestrial networks However, their successful and widespread adoption relies on energy-efficient on-board communication systems. In this context, the integration of Reconfigurable Smart Surfaces (RSS) into aerial platforms is envisioned as a key enabler of energy-efficient and cost-effective deployments of aerial platforms. Indeed, RSS consist of low-cost reflectors capable of smartly directing signals in a nearly passive way. We investigate in this paper the link budget of RSS-assisted communications under the two discussed RSS reflection paradigms in the literature, namely the specular and the scattering reflection paradigm types. Specifically, we analyze the characteristics of RSS-equipped aerial platforms and compare their communication performance with that of RSS-assisted terrestrial networks, using standardized channel models. In addition, we derive the optimal aerial platforms placements under both reflection paradigms. The obtained results provide important insights for the design of RSS-assisted communications. For instance, given that a HAPS has a large RSS surface, it provides superior link budget performance in most studied scenarios. In contrast, the limited RSS area on UAVs and the large propagation loss in LEO satellite communications make them unfavorable candidates for supporting terrestrial users. Finally, the optimal location of the RSS-equipped platform may depend on the platform's altitude, coverage footprint, and type of environment.

Multi-user Joint Maximum-Likelihood Detection in Uplink NOMA-IoT Networks: Removing the Error Floor

The Internet of Things (IoT) framework requires a massive number of connection thus demanding spectral efficient solutions such as Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA). However, the main drawback of NOMA with successive interference canceler (SIC)-based detectors is the error floor in the uplink. In this paper, a reliable multi-user detection in uplink IoT NOMA is guaranteed by a Joint Maximum-Likelihood (JML) detector (i.e., optimum detection algorithm). We derive a closed-form upper bound of bit error rate (BER) of JML over Rayleigh fading channels for arbitrary number of IoT devices and an adaptive M-ary phase shift keying (M-PSK). Based on the extensive simulations, the derived expressions are validated and it is revealed that the JML improves the error performance in uplink NOMA and removes the error floor. Furthermore, regardless of the number of the IoT devices and modulation order, a full diversity order (i.e., number of receiving antennas) is guaranteed for each device.

Disconnectivity-Aware Energy-Efficient Cargo-UAV Trajectory Planning with Minimum Handoffs

On-board battery consumption, cellular disconnectivity, and frequent handoff are key challenges for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based delivery missions, a.k.a., cargo-UAV. Indeed, with the introduction of UAV technology into cargo shipping and logistics, designing energy-efficient paths becomes a serious issue for the next retail industry transformation. Typically, the latter has to guarantee uninterrupted or slightly interrupted cellular connectivity for the UAV's command and control through a small number of handoffs. In this paper, we formulate the trajectory planning as a multi-objective problem aiming to minimize both the UAV's energy consumption and the handoff rate, constrained by the UAV battery size and disconnectivity rate. Due to the problem's complexity, we propose a dynamic programming based solution. Through simulations, we demonstrate the efficiency of our approach in providing optimized UAV trajectories. Also, the impact of several parameters, such as the cargo-UAV altitude, disconnectivity rate, and type of environment, are investigated. The obtained results allow to draw recommendations and guidelines for cargo-UAV operations.

3D Aerial Highway: The Key Enabler of the Retail Industry Transformation

The retail industry is already facing an inevitable transformation worldwide, and with the current pandemic situation, it is even accelerating. Indeed, consumer habits are shifting from brick-and-mortar stores to online shopping. The bottleneck in the end-to-end online shopping experience remains the efficient and quick delivery of goods to consumers. In this context, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology is seen as a potential solution to address cargo delivery issues. Hence, the number of cargo-UAVs is expected to skyrocket in the next few decades and the airspace to become densely crowded. To successfully deploy UAVs for mass cargo delivery, seamless and reliable cellular connectivity for highly mobile UAVs is required. There is an urgent need for organized and connected routes in the sky. Like highways for cargo trucks, 3D routes in the airspace should be designed for cargo-UAVs to fulfill their operations safely and efficiently. We refer to these routes as 3D aerial highway. In this paper, we thoroughly investigate the feasibility of the aerial highways paradigm. First, we discuss the motivations and concerns of the aerial highway paradigm. Then, we present our vision of the 3D aerial highway framework. Finally, we present related connectivity issues and their potential solutions.

Energy-Efficient Coverage Enhancement of Indoor THz-MISO Systems: An FD-NOMA Approach

Terahertz (THz) communication is gaining more interest as one of the envisioned enablers of high-data-rate short-distance indoor applications in beyond 5G networks. Moreover, non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA)-enabled schemes are promising schemes to realize the target spectral efficiency, low latency, and user fairness requirements in future networks. In this paper, an energy-efficient cooperative NOMA (CNOMA) scheme that guarantees the minimum required rate for the cell-edge users in an indoor THz-MISO communications network is proposed. The proposed cooperative scheme consists of three stages: (i) beamforming stage that allocates base-station (BS) beams to THz cooperating cell-center users using analog beamforming with the aid of the cosine similarity metric, (ii) user pairing stage that is tackled using the Hungarian algorithm, and (iii) power allocation stage for both the BS THz-NOMA transmit power and the cooperation power of the cooperating cell-center users, which are optimized sequentially. The obtained results quantify the energy efficiency (EE) of the proposed scheme and shed new light on the performance of multi-user THz-NOMA-enabled networks.

Coded Faster-than-Nyquist Signaling for Short Packet Communications

Ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) requires short packets of data transmission. It is known that when the packet length becomes short, the achievable rate is subject to a penalty when compared to the channel capacity. In this paper, we propose to use faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling to compensate for the achievable rate loss of short packet communications. We investigate the performance of a combination of a low complexity detector of FTN signaling used with nonbinary low-density parity-check (NB-LDPC) codes that is suitable for low-latency and short block length requirements of URLLC systems. Our investigation shows that such combination of low-complexity FTN signaling detection and NB-LDPC codes outperforms the use of close-to-optimal FTN signaling detectors with LDPC codes in terms of error rate performance and also has a considerably lower computational complexity.

Future Ultra-Dense LEO Satellite Networks: A Cell-Free Massive MIMO Approach

Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks (SatNets) are envisioned to play a crucial role in providing global and ubiquitous connectivity efficiently. Accordingly, in the coming years, thousands of LEO satellites will be launched to create ultradense LEO mega-constellations, and the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is working on evolving fifth-generation (5G) systems to support such non-terrestrial networks (NTN). However, many challenges are associated with the deployment of LEOs from communications and networking perspectives. In this paper, we propose a novel cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) based architecture for future ultra-dense LEO SatNets. We discuss various aspects of network design, such as duplexing mode, pilot assignment, beamforming, and handover management. In addition, we propose a joint optimization framework for the power allocation and handover management processes to maximize the network throughput and minimize the handover rate while ensuring quality-of-service (QoS) satisfaction for users. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to introduce and study CF-mMIMO-based LEO SatNets. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed architecture and solutions compared to those of conventional single-satellite connectivity and handover techniques from the literature.

Physical Layer Security Framework for Optical Non-Terrestrial Networks

In this work, we propose a new physical layer security framework for optical space networks. More precisely, we consider two practical eavesdropping scenarios: free-space optical (FSO) eavesdropping in the space and FSO eavesdropping in the air. In the former, we assume that a high altitude platform station (HAPS) is trying to capture the confidential information from the low earth orbit (LEO) satellite, whereas in the latter, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) eavesdropper is trying to intercept the confidential information from the HAPS node. To quantify the overall performance of both scenarios, we obtain closed-form secrecy outage probability (SOP) and probability of positive secrecy capacity (PPSC) expressions and validate with Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, we provide important design guidelines that can be helpful in the design of secure non-terrestrial networks.

Optical Wireless Satellite Networks versus Optical Fiber Terrestrial Networks: The Latency Perspective

Formed by using laser inter-satellite links (LISLs) among satellites in upcoming low Earth orbit and very low Earth orbit satellite constellations, optical wireless satellite networks (OWSNs), also known as free-space optical satellite networks, can provide a better alternative to existing optical fiber terrestrial networks (OFTNs) for long-distance inter-continental data communications. The LISLs operate at the speed of light in vacuum in space, which gives OWSNs a crucial advantage over OFTNs in terms of latency. In this paper, we employ the satellite constellation for Phase I of Starlink and LISLs between satellites to simulate an OWSN. Then, we compare the network latency of this OWSN and the OFTN under three different scenarios for long-distance inter-continental data communications. The results show that the OWSN performs better than the OFTN in all scenarios. It is observed that the longer the length of the inter-continental connection between the source and the destination, the better the latency improvement offered by the OWSN compared to OFTN.

Location Management in IP-based Future LEO Satellite Networks: A Review

Future integrated terrestrial, aerial, and space networks will involve thousands of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites forming a network of mega-constellations, which will play a significant role in providing communication and Internet services everywhere, at any time, and for everything. Due to its very large scale and highly dynamic nature, future LEO satellite networks (SatNets) management is a very complicated and crucial process, especially the mobility management aspect and its two components location management and handover management. In this article, we present a comprehensive and critical review of the state-of-the-art research in LEO SatNets location management. First, we give an overview of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) mobility management standards (e.g., Mobile IPv6 and Proxy Mobile IPv6) and discuss their location management techniques limitations in the environment of future LEO SatNets. We highlight future LEO SatNets mobility characteristics and their challenging features and describe two unprecedented future location management scenarios. A taxonomy of the available location management solutions for LEO SatNets is presented, where the solutions are classified into three approaches. The "Issues to consider" section draws attention to critical points related to each of the reviewed approaches that should be considered in future LEO SatNets location management. To identify the gaps, the current state of LEO SatNets location management is summarized. Noteworthy future research directions are recommended. This article is providing a road map for researchers and industry to shape the future of LEO SatNets location management.

Communication, Computing, Caching, and Sensing for Next Generation Aerial Delivery Networks

This paper describes the envisioned interactions between the information and communication technology and aerospace industries to serve autonomous devices for next generation aerial parcel delivery networks. The autonomous features of fleet elements of the delivery network are enabled by the increased throughput, improved coverage, and near-user computation capabilities of vertical heterogeneous networks (VHetNets). A high altitude platform station (HAPS), located around 20~km above the ground level in a quasi-stationary manner, serves as the main enabler of the vision we present. In addition to the sensing potential of the HAPS nodes, the use of communication, computing, and caching capabilities demonstrate the attainability of the ambitious goal of serving a fully autonomous aerial fleet capable of addressing instantaneous user demands and enabling supply chain management interactions with delivery services in low-latency settings.

Interplay Between NOMA and GSSK: Detection Strategies and Performance Analysis

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a technology enabler for the fifth generation and beyond networks, which has shown a great flexibility such that it can be readily integrated with other wireless technologies. In this paper, we investigate the interplay between NOMA and generalized space shift keying (GSSK) in a hybrid NOMA-GSSK (N-GSSK) network. Specifically, we provide a comprehensive analytical framework and propose a novel suboptimal energy-based maximum likelihood (ML) detector for the N-GSSK scheme. The proposed ML decoder exploits the energy of the received signals in order to estimate the active antenna indices. Its performance is investigated in terms of pairwise error probability, bit error rate union bound, and achievable rate. Finally, we establish the validity of our analysis through Monte-Carlo simulations and demonstrate that N-GSSK outperforms conventional NOMA and GSSK, particularly in terms of spectral efficiency.

Energy-Efficient RIS-Assisted Satellites for IoT Networks

The use of satellites to provide ubiquitous coverage and connectivity for densely deployed Internet of Things (IoT) networks is expected to be a reality in emerging 6G networks. Yet the low battery capacity of IoT nodes constitutes a problem for their direct connectivity to satellites, which are located at altitudes of up to 2000 km. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture involving the use of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) units to mitigate the path loss associated with long transmission distances. These RIS units can be placed on satellite reflectarrays, and, when used in broadcasting and beamforming, they can provide significant gains in signal transmission. This study shows that RIS-assisted satellites can provide up to 10^5 times higher downlink and achievable uplink rates for IoT networks.

Securing the Inter-Spacecraft Links: Physical Layer Key Generation from Doppler Frequency Shift

In this work, we propose a secret key generation procedure specifically designed for the inter-spacecraft communication links. As a novel secrecy source, the spacecrafts utilize Doppler frequency shift based measurements. In this way, the mobilities of the communication devices are exploited to generate secret keys, where this resource can be utilized in the environments that the channel fading based key generation methods are not available. The mobility of a spacecraft is modeled as the superposition of a pre-determined component and a dynamic component. We derive the maximum achievable secret key generation rate from the Doppler frequency shift. The proposed secret key generation procedure extracts the Doppler frequency shift in the form of nominal power spectral density samples (NPSDS). We propose a maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation for the NPSDS at the spacecrafts, then a uniform quantizer is utilized to obtain secret key bits. The key disagreement rate (KDR) is analytically obtained for the proposed key generation procedure. Through numerical studies, the tightness of the provided approximations is shown. Both the theoretical and numerical results demonstrate the validity and the practicality of the presented physical layer key generation procedure considering the security of the communication links of spacecrafts.

Channel Estimation for Full-Duplex RIS-assisted HAPS Backhauling with Graph Attention Networks

In this paper, graph attention network (GAT) is firstly utilized for the channel estimation. In accordance with the 6G expectations, we consider a high-altitude platform station (HAPS) mounted reconfigurable intelligent surface-assisted two-way communications and obtain a low overhead and a high normalized mean square error performance. The performance of the proposed method is investigated on the two-way backhauling link over the RIS-integrated HAPS. The simulation results denote that the GAT estimator overperforms the least square in full-duplex channel estimation. Contrary to the previously introduced methods, GAT at one of the nodes can separately estimate the cascaded channel coefficients. Thus, there is no need to use time-division duplex mode during pilot signaling in full-duplex communication. Moreover, it is shown that the GAT estimator is robust to hardware imperfections and changes in small-scale fading characteristics even if the training data do not include all these variations.
