Reconfigurable Antennas for Next-generation Mobile Communication Networks: A Comprehensive Survey and Tutorial

The transition to next-generation mobile communication networks, particularly 6G, demands advanced technologies to meet the requirements for ultra-reliable, low-latency communication, massive connectivity, and intelligent applications. Reconfigurable antennas (RAs) play a crucial role in achieving these objectives by enabling dynamic adjustments to the radio frequency (RF) characteristics of antennas, such as gain, radiation pattern, impedance, and polarization. Unlike traditional fixed-position antennas, RAs can alter both their radiation patterns and positions, offering flexibility in response to varying communication environments. This paper presents a comprehensive survey and tutorial on RAs, with a focus on fluid antennas (FAs), movable antennas (MAs), pinching antennas (PAs), and reconfigurable holographic antennas (RHAs), examining their potential in next-generation mobile networks. We explore the channel modelling and estimation, performance analysis, resource allocation strategies, and their synergy with other emerging wireless technologies for each type of RA. Finally, we provide a comparative analysis of different RAs and discuss the open challenges and future research directions, offering insights and guidance for future investigations in the exciting research area.

Enhanced Fluid Index Modulation for Integrated Data and Energy Transfer

Integrated data and energy transfer (IDET) is a promising technique for supporting sustainable low-power wireless networks. To improve both communication reliability and energy transfer efficiency, this paper investigates a fluid index modulation (FIM) assisted IDET system, where the base station employs a two-dimensional fluid antenna system (FAS) and the receiver adopts a power-splitting architecture. In FIM, the information bits are delivered not only from the modulation symbols, but also the index of antenna position. Under finite-alphabet signaling, the average harvested power, bit error rate (BER), and achievable data rate are derived in closed form. A joint optimization problem is formulated to maximize the average harvested power subject to BER and achievable rate constraints by jointly optimizing the port selection, precoding vector, and power splitting ratio. An alternating optimization framework is developed, where the precoding vector and port selection are obtained via a Riemannian augmented Lagrangian method (RALM) and block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves a superior rate-energy trade-off over benchmark schemes, while the proposed algorithm attains near-optimal performance with significantly lower complexity than exhaustive search.

Hybrid Pinching-Fluid Antenna Assisted Wireless Communications: Modeling and Performance Analysis

Reconfigurable-antenna systems have received increasing attention for their ability to adapt wireless channels. However, existing architectures exhibit scenario-dependent limitations: fluid antennas provide strong diversity gains in rich-scattering environments but offer limited benefits under line-of-sight (LoS)-dominant conditions, while pinching antennas can effectively reduce path loss by adjusting the radiation point along a waveguide, yet perform poorly in severe non-LoS (NLoS) scenarios. This letter proposes a hybrid pinching-fluid antenna system (HPFAS), where pinching antenna (PA) is employed at the transmitter and a fluid antenna (FA) is used at the receiver to jointly exploit LoS enhancement and spatial diversity. A tractable channel model is developed, and outage probability expressions are derived for both single-user and multi-user scenarios. Simulation results validate the analysis and show that the proposed HPFAS consistently outperforms systems using only pinching antennas or only fluid antennas under various propagation conditions.

Bridging Theory and Practice in Reconfigurable Fluid Antenna Systems

Fluid antennas, including those based on liquid, mechanical, and pixel-based technologies, are poised to significantly enhance next-generation wireless systems by adaptively optimizing their radiation characteristics. Many theoretical analyses assumed near-instant reconfiguration, perfect channel knowledge, static or slowly varying propagation environments, and ideal material properties that rarely hold in practice. In this article, we dissect these common assumptions and contrast them with the realities of finite actuation time, limited and imperfect channel state information, rapidly changing fading conditions, electromagnetic coupling, and mechanical constraints. Through illustrative examples and simulations, we demonstrate how ignoring these factors can lead to overestimated gains in capacity, coverage, etc.. We then propose modeling refinements, experimental validation methods, and emerging control algorithms that better account for real-world constraints. Our findings highlight that, while reconfigurable antennas remain highly promising for B5G/6G and Internet of things (IoT) applications, their full potential can only be realized by incorporating practical considerations into system design and performance evaluation.

LLM-Enhanced Space-Air-Ground-Sea Integrated Networks

The space-air-ground-sea integrated networking (SAGSIN) concept promises seamless global multimedia connectivity, yet two obstacles still limit its practical deployment. Firstly, high-velocity satellites, aerial relays and sea-surface platforms suffer from obsolete channel state information (CSI), undermining feedback-based adaptation. Secondly, data-rate disparity across the protocol stack is extreme: terabit optical links in space coexist with kilobit acoustic under-water links. This article shows that a single large language model (LLM) backbone, trained jointly on radio, optical and acoustic traces, can provide a unified, data-driven adaptation layer that addresses both rapid CSI ageing and severe bandwidth disparity across the SAGSIN protocol stack. Explicitly, an LLM-based long-range channel predictor forecasts the strongest delay-Doppler components several coherence intervals ahead, facilitating near-capacity reception despite violent channel fluctuations. Furthermore, our LLM-based semantic encoder turns raw sensor payloads into task-oriented tokens. This substantially reduces the SNR required for high-fidelity image delivery in a coastal underwater link, circumventing the data rate limitation by semantic communications. Inclusion of these tools creates a medium-agnostic adaptation layer that spans radio, optical and acoustic channels. We conclude with promising open research directions in on-device model compression, multimodal fidelity control, cross-layer resource orchestration and trustworthy operation, charting a path from laboratory prototypes to field deployment.

FAS-LLM: Large Language Model-Based Channel Prediction for OTFS-Enabled Satellite-FAS Links

This paper proposes FAS-LLM, a novel large language model (LLM)-based architecture for predicting future channel states in Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS)-enabled satellite downlinks equipped with fluid antenna systems (FAS). The proposed method introduces a two-stage channel compression strategy combining reference-port selection and separable principal component analysis (PCA) to extract compact, delay-Doppler-aware representations from high-dimensional OTFS channels. These representations are then embedded into a LoRA-adapted LLM, enabling efficient time-series forecasting of channel coefficients. Performance evaluations demonstrate that FAS-LLM outperforms classical baselines including GRU, LSTM, and Transformer models, achieving up to 10 dB normalized mean squared error (NMSE) improvement and threefold root mean squared error (RMSE) reduction across prediction horizons. Furthermore, the predicted channels preserve key physical-layer characteristics, enabling near-optimal performance in ergodic capacity, spectral efficiency, and outage probability across a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). These results highlight the potential of LLM-based forecasting for delay-sensitive and energy-efficient link adaptation in future satellite IoT networks.

Performance Analysis of Fluid Antenna System Aided OTFS Satellite Communications

Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks typically rely on satellite communications to provide coverage in rural areas. However, high-mobility satellite links introduce severe Doppler and delay spreads, which necessitate the use of orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation for reliable data transmission. Furthermore, the space and energy constraints on IoT devices make the perfect use case for fluid antenna systems (FAS) due to their mechanical simplicity. Hence, we propose a sophisticated FAS aided OTFS (FAS-OTFS) framework for satellite-based IoT networks. We derive analytical expressions for both the outage probability and ergodic capacity of FAS-OTFS under a general channel model, where the expressions derived are presented in integral form or as analytical bounds for efficient numerical evaluation. Additionally, we investigate a single-path fading scenario, where closed-form expressions are obtained. Our numerical results demonstrate significant performance gains in terms of both the outage probability and capacity compared to conventional OTFS systems, confirming the efficacy of FAS-OTFS in energy-constrained high-mobility environments. Our findings establish FAS-OTFS as a promising candidate for next-generation IoT communications over satellite links.

Energy-Efficient Port Selection and Beamforming Design for Integrated Data and Energy Transfer Assisted by Fluid Antennas

Integrated data and energy transfer (IDET) is considered as a key enabler of 6G, as it can provide both wireless energy transfer (WET) and wireless data transfer (WDT) services towards low power devices. Thanks to the extra degree of freedom provided by fluid antenna (FA), incorporating FA into IDET systems presents a promising approach to enhance energy efficiency performance. This paper investigates a FA assisted IDET system, where the transmitter is equipped with multiple FAs and transmits wireless signals to the data receiver (DR) and the energy receiver (ER), which are both equipped with a single traditional antenna. The switching delay and energy consumption induced by port selection are taken into account in IDET system for the first time. We aim to obtain the optimal beamforming vector and the port selection strategy at the transmitter, in order to maximize the short-term and long-term WET efficiency, respectively. The instant sub-optimal solution is obtained by alternatively optimizing the beamforming vector and port selection in each transmission frame, while a novel constrained soft actor critic (C-SAC) algorithm is proposed to find the feasible policy of port selection from the long-term perspective. Simulation results demonstrate that our scheme is able to achieve greater gain in terms of both the short-term and long-term WET efficiency compared to other benchmarks, while not degrading WDT performance.

Performance Analysis of Fluid Antenna Multiple Access Assisted Wireless Powered Communication Network

This paper investigates a novel fluid antenna multiple access (FAMA)-assisted wireless powered communication network (WPCN), in which a hybrid access point (HAP) equipped with multiple fixed position antennas (FPAs) provides integrated data and energy transfer (IDET) services towards low-power devices that are equipped with a single fluid antenna (FA), while the low-power devices use harvested energy to power their own uplink transmission. Using the block correlation channel model, both the downlink and uplink wireless data transfer (WDT) outage probabilities are analyzed under specific port selection strategies, including downlink signal-to-interference ratio-based port selection (DSPS) strategy, downlink energy harvesting power-based port selection (DEPS) strategy, uplink signal-to-noise ratio-based port selection (USPS) strategy, and uplink channel-based port selection (UCPS) strategy. A step function approximation (SFA) approach is also relied upon to derive closed-form expressions for the outage probabilities, while the lower bounds for uplink WDT outage probabilities are also formulated. Numerical results demonstrate the validity of our theoretical analysis, which also provide useful guidelines for the system design through the analytical framework.

Temporal-Assisted Beamforming and Trajectory Prediction in Sensing-Enabled UAV Communications

In the evolving landscape of high-speed communication, the shift from traditional pilot-based methods to a Sensing-Oriented Approach (SOA) is anticipated to gain momentum. This paper delves into the development of an innovative Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) framework, specifically tailored for beamforming and trajectory prediction processes. Central to this research is the exploration of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-enabled communication system, which seamlessly integrates ISAC technology. This integration underscores the synergistic interplay between sensing and communication capabilities. The proposed system initially deploys omnidirectional beams for the sensing-focused phase, subsequently transitioning to directional beams for precise object tracking. This process incorporates an Extended Kalman Filtering (EKF) methodology for the accurate estimation and prediction of object states. A novel frame structure is introduced, employing historical sensing data to optimize beamforming in real-time for subsequent time slots, a strategy we refer to as 'temporal-assisted' beamforming. To refine the temporal-assisted beamforming technique, we employ Successive Convex Approximation (SCA) in tandem with Iterative Rank Minimization (IRM), yielding high-quality suboptimal solutions. Comparative analysis with conventional pilot-based systems reveals that our approach yields a substantial improvement of 156\% in multi-object scenarios and 136\% in single-object scenarios.

Fluid Antenna Multiple Access Assisted Integrated Data and Energy Transfer: Outage and Multiplexing Gain Analysis

Fluid antenna multiple access (FAMA) exploits the spatial opportunities in wireless channels to overcome multiuser interference by position (a.k.a.~port) switching, which can achieve better performance compared to traditional fixed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Additionally, integrated data and energy transfer (IDET) is capable of providing both wireless data transfer (WDT) and wireless energy transfer (WET) services towards low-power devices. In this paper, a FAMA-assisted IDET system is investigated, where a base station (BS) equipped with $N$ fixed antennas provides dedicated IDET services towards $N$ user equipments (UEs). Each UE is equipped with a single fluid antenna, while the power splitting (PS) approach is conceived for coordinating WDT and WET. The outage probabilities of both WDT and WET are derived and approximated into closed-forms, where the fluid antenna (FA) at each UE selects the optimal port to achieve the maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) or the energy harvesting power (EHP). The IDET outage probabilities are defined and subsequently derived and approximated into closed-forms. Further, multiplexing gains of the proposed system are defined and analyzed to evaluate the performace. Numerical results validate the theoretical analysis, while also illustrate that the trade-off is achieved between WDT and WET performance by exploiting different port selection strategies. Furthermore, the number of UEs should be optimized to achieve better IDET performance of the system.

Joint Port Selection and Beamforming Design for Fluid Antenna Assisted Integrated Data and Energy Transfer

Integrated data and energy transfer (IDET) has been of fundamental importance for providing both wireless data transfer (WDT) and wireless energy transfer (WET) services towards low-power devices. Fluid antenna (FA) is capable of exploiting the huge spatial diversity of the wireless channel to enhance the receive signal strength, which is more suitable for the tiny-size low-power devices having the IDET requirements. In this letter, a multiuser FA assisted IDET system is studied and the weighted energy harvesting power at energy receivers (ERs) is maximized by jointly optimizing the port selection and transmit beamforming design under imperfect channel state information (CSI), while the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint for each data receiver (DR) is satisfied. An efficient algorithm is proposed to obtain the suboptimal solutions for the non-convex problem. Simulation results evaluate the performance of the FA-IDET system, while also demonstrate that FA outperforms the multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) counterpart in terms of the IDET performance, as long as the port number is large enough.

Performance Analysis of Integrated Data and Energy Transfer Assisted by Fluid Antenna Systems

Fluid antenna multiple access (FAMA) is capable of exploiting the high spatial diversity of wireless channels to mitigate multi-user interference via flexible port switching, which achieves a better performance than traditional multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) systems. Moreover, integrated data and energy transfer (IDET) is able to provide both the wireless data transfer (WDT) and wireless energy transfer (WET) services towards low-power devices. In this paper, a FAMA assisted IDET system is studied, where $N$ access points (APs) provide dedicated IDET services towards $N$ user equipments (UEs). Each UE is equipped with a single fluid antenna. The performance of WDT and WET , i.e., the WDT outage probability, the WET outage probability, the reliable throughput and the average energy harvesting amount, are analysed theoretically by using time switching (TS) between WDT and WET. Numerical results validate our theoretical analysis, which reveals that the number of UEs and TS ratio should be optimized to achieve a trade-off between the WDT and WET performance. Moreover, FAMA assisted IDET achieves a better performance in terms of both WDT and WET than traditional MIMO with the same antenna size.

Price-Discrimination Game for Distributed Resource Management in Federated Learning

In vanilla federated learning (FL) such as FedAvg, the parameter server (PS) and multiple distributed clients can form a typical buyer's market, where the number of PS/buyers of FL services is far less than the number of clients/sellers. In order to improve the performance of FL and reduce the cost of motivating clients to participate in FL, this paper proposes to differentiate the pricing for services provided by different clients rather than simply providing the same service pricing for different clients. The price is differentiated based on the performance improvements brought to FL and their heterogeneity in computing and communication capabilities. To this end, a price-discrimination game (PDG) is formulated to comprehensively address the distributed resource management problems in FL, including multi-objective trade-off, client selection, and incentive mechanism. As the PDG is a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, a distributed semi-heuristic algorithm with low computational complexity and low communication overhead is designed to solve it. The simulation result verifies the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
