RIS-Assisted Radar-Communication Coexistence: Detection Analysis with Channel Uncertainties

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a promising technology for improving communication reliability in radar-communication coexistence (RCC) scenarios, particularly for communication users (CUs) located inside radar exclusion zones, where only the radar is permitted to operate and the two systems remain uncoordinated. In such settings, CUs may suffer from strong radar interference whose phase is random and difficult to track while also facing difficulty in obtaining accurate CSI from the base station. These challenges become even more critical in the presence of RIS phase errors, which limit the applicability of conventional coherent detection methods. Motivated by these practical limitations, this paper develops an RIS-assisted RCC framework for a CU operating in an uncoordinated RCC setting. Within this framework, we derive two practical maximum-likelihood (ML)-based detectors, both of which avoid tracking the radar interference phase: 1) a non-coherent detector that does not require instantaneous CSI and incorporates RIS phase uncertainty, and 2) a mismatched coherent detector that relies on imperfect CSI. For the non-coherent case, we derive an exact likelihood expression and a closed-form detector in the low to moderate SINR regime. For the imperfect CSI case, we derive the corresponding closed-form detector in the low-to-moderate SINR regime, and analyze performance through pairwise error probability (PEP), yielding a tractable approximation based on Gauss-Chebyshev quadrature. Numerical and analytical results show that the proposed non-coherent detector closely matches the optimal ML detector, validating its practical usefulness.

On the Detection Optimality and Exact BER Analysis of NOMA

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) detection using successive interference cancellation (SIC) and joint multiuser maximum likelihood (JML) has been extensively studied, although their presumed optimality for individual-user bit error rate (BER) minimization is unestablished. Moreover, existing BER analyses overlook the SIC-induced statistical changes. This letter derives optimal per-user maximum a posteriori (MAP) detectors, identifies when the near-user detector reduces to conventional SIC, and proves the equivalence of conventional SIC and JML. An exact average BER analysis accounting for SIC-induced statistical changes is presented. The results show that the proposed detector achieves modest but consistent BER gains at low-to-moderate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

T-Parameters Based Modeling for Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces: Tractable and Physically Consistent Model

This work develops a physically consistent model for stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIM) using multiport network theory and transfer scattering parameters (T-parameters). Unlike the scattering parameters (S-parameters) model, the developed T-parameters model is simpler and more tractable. Moreover, the T-parameters constraints for lossless reciprocal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are derived. Additionally, a gradient descent algorithm (GDA) is introduced to maximize sum-rate in SIM-aided multiuser scenarios, demonstrating that mutual coupling and feedback between consecutive layers enhance performance. However, increasing SIM layers with a fixed total number of elements typically degrades sum-rate, unless the simplified channel model employing Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction coefficients is utilized.

Beyond Diagonal RIS: Passive Maximum Ratio Transmission and Interference Nulling Enabler

Beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (BD-RIS) generalizes and goes beyond conventional diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (D-RIS) by interconnecting elements to generate beyond diagonal scattering matrices, which significantly strengthen the wireless channels. In this work, we use BD-RIS for passive multiuser beamforming in multiuser multiple-input-single-output (MU-MISO) systems. Specifically, we design the scattering matrix of BD-RIS to either maximize the sum received signal power at the users following maximum ratio transmission (MRT), or to nullify the interference at the users following zero forcing (ZF). Furthermore, we investigate uniform/optimized power allocation and ZF precoding at the base station (BS). Numerical results show that BD-RIS improves the interference nulling capability and sum rate with fewer reflecting elements (REs) compared to D-RIS. In addition, at moderate to high signal to noise ratios (SNRs), passive interference nulling reduces the complexity at the BS by relaxing the need for precoding or water-filling power allocation design. Furthermore, the passive MRT with ZF precoding achieves a tight sum rate performance to the joint design considering MU-MISO scenarios with many REs while maintaining low computational complexity and simplifying the channel estimation.

Novel Many-to-Many NOMA-based Communication Protocols for Vehicular Platoons

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising technique for ultra-reliable low-latency communication as it provides higher spectral efficiency and lower latency. In this work, we propose novel many-to-many (M2M) NOMA-based schemes to exchange broadcast, multicast, and unicast messages between cluster heads (CHs) of vehicular platoons. Specifically, we design uplink-M2M-NOMA (UM-NOMA), downlink-M2M-NOMA (DM-NOMA) and joint uplink-downlink-M2M-NOMA (UDM-NOMA) schemes for peer-to-peer vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). We propose a unique clustering design for full-duplex communication that utilizes the high throughput millimeter-wave (mmWave) channels. Furthermore, we investigate jointly optimal CH selection (CHS) and power allocation (PA) to maximize the network sum rate and devise a computationally efficient tailored-greedy algorithm that yields near-optimal performance. We also propose a super-cluster formation protocol to further limit the overhead of successive interference cancellation (SIC). The results reveal that in most of the considered scenarios, the proposed UDM-NOMA scheme outperforms orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of sum rate by up to 50% even when the SIC receiver errors reach 10%.
