Bianchi cosmologies in a Thurston-based theory of gravity

The strong interplay between Bianchi--Kantowski--Sachs (BKS) spacetimes and Thurston geometries motivates the exploration of the role of topology in our understanding of gravity. As such, we study non-tilted BKS solutions of a theory of gravity that explicitly depends on Thurston geometries. We show that shear-free solutions with perfect fluid, as well as static vacuum solutions, exist for all topologies. Moreover, we prove that, aside from non-rotationally-symmetric Bianchi II models, all BKS metrics isotropize in the presence of a positive cosmological constant, and that recollapse is never possible when the weak energy condition is satisfied. This contrasts with General Relativity (GR), where these two properties fail for Bianchi IX and KS metrics. No additional parameters compared to GR are required for these results. We discuss, in particular, how this framework might allow for simple inflationary models in any topology.

General formalism, classification, and demystification of the current warp-drive spacetimes

We critically examine proposals for the so-called warp-drive spacetimes and classify these models based on their various restrictions within the framework of General Relativity. We then provide a summary of general formalism for each class, and in the process, we highlight some misconceptions, misunderstandings, and errors in the literature that have been used to support claims about the physicality and feasibility of these models. On the way, we prove several new no-go theorems. Our analysis shows that when the principles of General Relativity are applied correctly, most claims regarding physical warp drives must be reassessed, and it becomes highly challenging to justify or support the viability of such models, not merely due to the violation of energy conditions.

On restrictions of current warp drive spacetimes and immediate possibilities of improvement

Looking at current proposals of so-called `warp drive spacetimes', they appear to employ General Relativity only at an elementary level. A number of strong restrictions are imposed such as flow-orthogonality of the spacetime foliation, vanishing spatial Ricci tensor, dimensionally reduced and coordinate-dependent velocity fields, to mention the main restrictions. We here provide a brief summary of our proposal of a general and covariant description of spatial motions within General Relativity, then discuss the restrictions that are employed in the majority of the current literature. That current warp drive models are discussed to be unphysical may not be surprising; they lack important ingredients such as covariantly non-vanishing spatial velocity, acceleration, vorticity, together with curved space, and a warp mechanism.

Affine connections for Galilean and Carrollian structures: a unified perspective

We develop a classification of general Carrollian structures, permitting affine connections with both torsion and non-metricity. We compare with a recent classification of general Galilean structures in order to present a unified perspective on both. Moreover, we demonstrate how both sets of structures emerge from the most general possible Lorentzian structures in their respective limits, and we highlight the role of global hyperbolicity in constraining both structures. We then leverage this work in order to construct for the first time an ultra-relativistic geometric trinity of gravitational theories, and consider connections which are simultaneously compatible with Galilean and Carrollian structures. We close by outlining a number of open questions and future prospects.

Stable cosmologies with collisionless charged matter

It is shown that Milne models (a subclass of FLRW spacetimes with negative spatial curvature) are nonlinearly stable in the set of solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov-Maxwell system, describing universes with ensembles of collisionless self-gravitating, charged particles. The system contains various slowly decaying borderline terms in the mutually coupled equations describing the propagation of particles and Maxwell fields. The effects of those terms are controlled using a suitable hierarchy based on the energy density of the matter fields.

Future attractors of Bianchi types II and V cosmologies with massless Vlasov matter

It is shown that the generalized Collins--Stewart radiation and Milne solutions are attractors of the massless Einstein--Vlasov system for Bianchi types II and V spacetimes, respectively. The proof is based on an energy method and bootstrap argument which are used to determine the decay rates of the perturbations away from the attractors.

On the total mass of asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds

Generalising a proof by Bartnik in the asymptotically Euclidean case, we give an elementary proof of positivity of the hyperbolic mass near the hyperbolic space. It is a pleasure to dedicate this work to Robert Bartnik on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

Isotropization of Slowly Expanding Spacetimes

We show that the homogeneous, massless Einstein-Vlasov system with toroidal spatial topology and diagonal Bianchi type I symmetry for initial data close to isotropic data isotropizes towards the future and in particular asymptotes to a radiative Einstein-deSitter model. We use an energy method to obtain quantitative estimates on the rate of isotropization in this class of models.

Energy in higher-dimensional spacetimes

We derive expressions for the total Hamiltonian energy of gravitating systems in higher dimensional theories in terms of the Riemann tensor, allowing a cosmological constant $Λ\in \mathbb{R}$. Our analysis covers asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes, asymptotically flat spacetimes, as well as Kaluza-Klein asymptotically flat spacetimes. We show that the Komar mass equals the ADM mass in asymptotically flat space-times in all dimensions, generalising the four-dimensional result of Beig, and that this is not true anymore with Kaluza-Klein asymptotics. We show that the Hamiltonian mass does not necessarily coincide with the ADM mass in Kaluza-Klein asymptotically flat space-times, and that the Witten positivity argument provides a lower bound for the Hamiltonian mass, and not for the ADM mass, in terms of the electric charge. We illustrate our results on the Rasheed Kaluza-Klein vacuum metrics, which we study in some detail, pointing out restrictions that arise from the requirement of regularity, seemingly unnoticed so far in the literature.
