A Matsushima theorem for K-polystable polarised smooth Fano threefolds

We prove that if $X$ is a smooth Fano threefold and $L$ is an ample $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor such that $(X,L)$ is K-polystable, then the automorphism group $\operatorname{Aut}(X)$ is reductive. This verifies the reductivity statement predicted by the Yau--Tian--Donaldson conjecture in the setting of smooth Fano threefolds with arbitrary ample polarisation.

Smooth Fano 3-folds satisfying Condition (A)

A smooth variety is said to satisfy Condition (A) if every finite abelian subgroup of its automorphism group has a fixed point. We classify smooth Fano 3-folds that satisfy Condition (A).

K-stability of Fano 3-folds in the World of Null-A

A variety is said to satisfy Condition (A) if every finite abelian subgroup of its automorphism group has a fixed point. We show that a smooth Fano 3-fold not satisfying Condition (A) is K-polystable unless it is contained in eight exceptional deformation families (seven of them consists of one smooth member, and one of them has one-parameter moduli).

K-stability of pointless del Pezzo surfaces and Fano 3-folds

We explore connections between existence of $\Bbbk$-rational points for Fano varieties defined over $\Bbbk$, a subfield of $\mathbb{C}$, and existence of K\"ahler-Einstein metrics on their geometric models. First, we show that geometric models of del Pezzo surfaces with at worst quotient singularities defined over $\Bbbk\subset\mathbb{C}$ admit (orbifold) K\"ahler--Einstein metrics if they do not have $\Bbbk$-rational points. Then we prove the same result for smooth Fano 3-folds with 8 exceptions. Consequently, we explicitly describe several families of pointless Fano 3-folds whose geometric models admit K\"ahler-Einstein metrics. In particular, we obtain new examples of prime Fano 3-folds of genus $12$ that admit K\"ahler--Einstein metrics. Our result can also be used to prove existence of rational points for certain Fano varieties, for example for any smooth Fano 3-fold over $\Bbbk\subset\mathbb{C}$ whose geometric model is strictly K-semistable.

On K-moduli of quartic threefolds

The family of smooth Fano 3-folds with Picard rank 1 and anticanonical volume 4 consists of quartic 3-folds and of double covers of the 3-dimensional quadric branched along an octic surface. They can all be parametrised as complete intersections of a quadric and a quartic in the weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(1,1,1,1,1,2)$, denoted by $X_{2,4} \subset \mathbb{P}(1^5,2)$; all such smooth complete intersections are K-stable. With the aim of investigating the compactification of the moduli space of quartic 3-folds given by K-stability, we exhibit three phenomena: (i) there exist K-polystable complete intersection $X_{2,2,4} \subset \mathbb{P}(1^5,2^2)$ Fano 3-folds which deform to quartic 3-folds and are neither quartic 3-folds nor double covers of quadric 3-folds - in other words, the closure of the locus parametrising complete intersections $X_{2,4}\subset \mathbb{P}(1^5,2)$ in the K-moduli contains elements that are not of this type; (ii) any quasi-smooth $X_{2,2,4} \subset \mathbb{P}(1^5,2^2)$ is K-polystable; (iii) the closure in the K-moduli space of the locus parametrising complete intersections $X_{2,2,4} \subset \mathbb{P}(1^5,2^2)$ which are not complete intersections $X_{2,4} \subset \mathbb{P}(1^5,2)$ contains only points which correspond to complete intersections $X_{2,2,4} \subset \mathbb{P}(1^5,2^2)$.

K-stability of Fano varieties via admissible flags

We develop a general approach to prove K-stability of Fano varieties. The new theory is used to (a) prove the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on all smooth Fano hypersurfaces of Fano index two, (b) to compute the stability thresholds for hypersurfaces at generalized Eckardt points and for cubic surfaces at all points, and (c) to provide a new algebraic proof of Tian's criterion for K-stability, amongst other applications.

Birational rigidity of orbifold degree 2 del Pezzo fibrations

Varieties fibered into del Pezzo surfaces form a class of possible outputs of the minimal model program. It is known that del Pezzo fibrations of degrees $1$ and $2$ over the projective line with smooth total space satisfying the so-called $K^2$-condition are birationally rigid: their Mori fibre space structure is unique. This implies that they are not birational to any Fano varieties, conic bundles or other del Pezzo fibrations. In particular, they are irrational. The families of del Pezzo fibrations with smooth total space of degree $2$ are rather special, as for "most" families a general del Pezzo fibration has the simplest orbifold singularities. We prove that orbifold del Pezzo fibrations of degree $2$ over the projective line satisfying explicit generality conditions as well as a generalised $K^2$-condition are birationally rigid.

Seshadri constants and K-stability of Fano manifolds

We give a lower bound of the $δ$-invariants of ample line bundles in terms of Seshadri constants. As applications, we prove the uniform K-stability of infinitely many families of Fano hypersurfaces of arbitrarily large index, as well as the uniform K-stability of most families of smooth Fano threefolds of Picard number one.

Stability of fibrations over one-dimensional bases

We introduce and study a new notion of stability for varieties fibered over curves, motivated by Kollár's stability for homogeneous polynomials with integral coefficients. We develop tools to study geometric properties of stable birational models of fibrations whose fibers are complete intersections in weighted projective spaces. As an application, we prove the existence of standard models of threefold degree one and two del Pezzo fibrations, settling a conjecture of Corti from 1996.

Double Veronese cones with 28 nodes

We study nodal del Pezzo 3-folds of degree $1$ (also known as double Veronese cones) with $28$ singularities, which is the maximal possible number of singularities for such varieties. We show that they are in one-to-one correspondence with smooth plane quartics and use this correspondence to study their automorphism groups. As an application, we find all $G$-birationally rigid varieties of this kind, and construct an infinite number of non-conjugate embeddings of the group $\mathfrak{S}_4$ into the space Cremona group.

Stable rationality of higher dimensional conic bundles

We prove that a very general nonsingular conic bundle $X\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ embedded in a projective vector bundle of rank $3$ over $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ is not stably rational if the anti-canonical divisor of $X$ is not ample and $n\geq 3$.

On a conjecture of Tian

We study Tian's $α$-invariant in comparison with the $α_1$-invariant for pairs $(S_d,H)$ consisting of a smooth surface $S_d$ of degree $d$ in the projective three-dimensional space and a hyperplane section $H$. A conjecture of Tian asserts that $α(S_d,H)=α_1(S_d,H)$. We show that this is indeed true for $d=4$ (the result is well known for $d\leqslant 3$), and we show that $α(S_d,H)<α_1(S_d,H)$ for $d\geqslant 8$ provided that $S_d$ is general enough. We also construct examples of $S_d$, for $d=6$ and $d=7$, for which Tian's conjecture fails. We provide a candidate counterexample for $S_5$.

Birationally rigid Pfaffian Fano 3-folds

We classify birationally rigid orbifold Fano 3-folds of index one defined by $5 \times 5$ Pfaffians. We give a sharp criterion for birational rigidity of these families based on the type of singularities that the varieties admit. Various conjectures are born out of our study, highlighting a possible approach to the classification of terminal Fano 3-folds. The birationally rigid cases are the first known rigid examples of Fanos that are not (weighted) complete intersection.

Mori dream spaces and birational rigidity of Fano 3-folds

We highlight a relation between the existence of Sarkisov links and the finite generation of (certain) Cox rings. We introduce explicit methods to use this relation in order to prove birational rigidity statements. To illustrate, we complete the birational rigidity results of Okada for Fano complete intersection 3-folds in singular weighted projective spaces.

On conjugacy classes of the Klein simple group in Cremona group

We consider countably many three dimensional $\mathtt{PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_7)$-del Pezzo surface fibrations over $\mathbb{P}^1$. Conjecturally they are all irrational except two families, one of which is the product of a del Pezzo surface with $\mathbb{P}^1$. We show that the other model is $\mathtt{PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_7)$-equivariantly birational to $\mathbb{P}^2\times\mathbb{P}^1$. Based on a result of Prokhorov, we show that they are non-conjugate as subgroups of the Cremona group $\mathtt{Cr}_3(\mathbb{C})$.

Non-rigid quartic 3-folds

Let $X\subset \mathbb{P}^4$ be a terminal factorial quartic $3$-fold. If $X$ is non-singular, $X$ is \emph{birationally rigid}, i.e. the classical MMP on any terminal $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial projective variety $Z$ birational to $X$ always terminates with $X$. This no longer holds when $X$ is singular, but very few examples of non-rigid factorial quartics are known. In this article, we first bound the local analytic type of singularities that may occur on a terminal factorial quartic hypersurface $X\subset \mathbb{P}^4$. A singular point on such a hypersurface is either of type $cA_n$ ($n\geq 1$), or of type $cD_m$ ($m\geq 4$), or of type $cE_6, cE_7$ or $cE_8$. We first show that if $(P \in X)$ is of type $cA_n$, $n$ is at most $7$, and if $(P \in X)$ is of type $cD_m$, $m$ is at most $8$. We then construct examples of non-rigid factorial quartic hypersurfaces whose singular loci consist (a) of a single point of type $cA_n$ for $2\leq n\leq 7$ (b) of a single point of type $cD_m$ for $m= 4$ or $5$ and (c) of a single point of type $cE_k$ for $k=6,7$ or $8$.
