Particle approximations of Wigner distributions for n arbitrary observables

A class of signed joint probability measures for n arbitrary quantum observables is derived and studied based on quasi-characteristic functions with symmetrized operator orderings of Margenau-Hill type. It is shown that the Wigner distribution associated with these observables can be rigorously approximated by such measures. These measures are given by affine combinations of Dirac delta distributions supported over the finite spectral range of the quantum observables and give the correct probability marginals when coarse-grained along any principal axis. We specialize to bivariate quasi-probability distributions for the spin measurements of spin-1/2 particles and derive their closed-form expressions. As a side result, we point out a connection between the convergence of these particle approximations and the Mehler-Heine theorem. Finally, we interpret the supports of these quasi-probability distributions in terms of repeated thought experiments.

One can hear the shape of ellipses of small eccentricity

We show that if the eccentricity of an ellipse is sufficiently small then up to isometries it is spectrally unique among all smooth domains. We do not assume any symmetry, convexity, or closeness to the ellipse, on the class of domains. In the course of the proof we also show that for nearly circular domains, the lengths of periodic orbits that are shorter than the perimeter of the domain must belong to the singular support of the wave trace. As a result we also obtain a Laplace spectral rigidity result for the class of axially symmetric nearly circular domains.

Centrally symmetric analytic plane domains are spectrally determined in this class

We prove that, under some generic non-degeneracy assumptions, real analytic, centrally symmetric plane domains are determined by their Dirichlet (resp. Neumann) spectra. We prove that the conditions are open-dense for real analytic convex domains. The proof is parallel to the proof that up/down symmetric domains are spectrally determined. One step is to use a Maslov index calculation to show that the second derivative of the defining function of a centrally symmetric domain at the endpoints of a bouncing ball orbit is a spectral invariant. This is also true for up/down symmetric domains, removing an assumption from the proof in that case.

The Dirichlet isospectral problem for trapezoids

We show that non-obtuse trapezoids are uniquely determined by their Dirichlet Laplace spectrum. This extends our previous result, which was only concerned with the Neumann Laplace spectrum.

Eigenfunction asymptotics and spectral Rigidity of the ellipse

This paper is part of a series concerning the isospectral problem for an ellipse. In this paper, we study Cauchy data of eigenfunctions of the ellipse with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. Using many classical results on ellipse eigenfunctions, we determine the microlocal defect measures of the Cauchy data of the eigenfunctions. The ellipse has integrable billiards, i.e. the boundary phase space is foliated by invariant curves of the billiard map. We prove that, for any invariant curve $C$, there exists a sequence of eigenfunctions whose Cauchy data concentrates on $C$. We use this result to give a new proof that ellipses are infinitesimally spectrally rigid among $C^{\infty}$ domains with the symmetries of the ellipse.

On a property of Bergman kernels when the Kähler potential is analytic

We provide a simple proof of a result of Rouby-Sjöstrand-Ngoc \cite{RSN} and Deleporte \cite{Deleporte}, which asserts that if the Kähler potential is real analytic then the Bergman kernel is an \textit{analytic kernel} meaning that its amplitude is an \textit{analytic symbol} and its phase is given by the polarization of the Kähler potential. This in particular shows that in the analytic case the Bergman kernel accepts an asymptotic expansion in a fixed neighborhood of the diagonal with an exponentially small remainder. The proof we provide is based on a linear recursive formula of L. Charles \cite{Cha03} on the Bergman kernel coefficients which is similar to, but simpler than, the ones found in \cite{BBS}.

Equidistribution of toral eigenfunctions along hypersurfaces

We prove a new quantum variance estimate for toral eigenfunctions. As an application, we show that, given any orthonormal basis of toral eigenfunctions and any smooth embedded hypersurface with nonvanishing principal curvatures, there exists a density one subsequence of eigenfunctions that equidistribute along the hypersurface. This is an analogue of the Quantum Ergodic Restriction theorems in the case of the flat torus, which in particular verifies the Bourgain-Rudnick's conjecture on $L^2$-restriction estimates for a density one subsequence of eigenfunctions in any dimension. Using our quantum variance estimates, we also obtain equidistribution of eigenfunctions against measures whose supports have Fourier dimension larger than $d-2$. In the end, we also describe a few quantitative results specific to dimension $2$.

Off-diagonal asymptotic properties of Bergman kernels associated to analytic Kähler potentials

We prove a new off-diagonal asymptotic of the Bergman kernels associated to tensor powers of a positive line bundle on a compact Kähler manifold. We show that if the Kähler potential is real analytic, then the Bergman kernel accepts a complete asymptotic expansion in a neighborhood of the diagonal of shrinking size $k^{-\frac14}$. These improve the earlier results in the subject for smooth potentials, where an expansion exists in a $k^{-\frac12}$ neighborhood of the diagonal. We obtain our results by finding upper bounds of the form $C^m m!^{2}$ for the Bergman coefficients $b_m(x, \bar y)$, which is an interesting problem on its own. We find such upper bounds using the method of Berman-Berndtsson-Sjöstrand. We also show that sharpening these upper bounds would improve the rate of shrinking neighborhoods of the diagonal $x=y$ in our results. In the special case of metrics with local constant holomorphic sectional curvatures, we obtain off-diagonal asymptotic in a fixed (as $k \to \infty$) neighborhood of the diagonal, which recovers a result of Berman [Ber] (see Remark 3.5 of [Ber] for higher dimensions). In this case, we also find an explicit formula for the Bergman kernel mod $O(e^{-k δ} )$.

Robin spectral rigidity of strictly convex domains with a reflectional symmetry

This is a note on a recent paper of De Simoi-Kaloshin-Wei \cite{DKW}. We show that using their results combined with wave trace invariants of Guillemin-Melrose and the heat trace invariants of Zayed for the Laplacian with Robin boundary conditions, one can extend the Dirichlet/Neumann spectral rigidity results of \cite{DKW} to the case of Robin boundary conditions. We will consider the same generic subset as in \cite{DKW} of smooth strictly convex $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetric planar domains sufficiently close to a circle, however we pair them with arbitrary $\mathbb Z_2$-symmetric smooth Robin functions on the boundary and of course allow deformations of Robin functions as well.

Quantum ergodicity and $L^p$ norms of restrictions of eigenfunctions

We prove an analogue of Sogge's local $L^p$ estimates for $L^p$ norms of restrictions of eigenfunctions to submanifolds, and use it to show that for quantum ergodic eigenfunctions one can get improvements of the results of Burq-Gérard-Tzvetkov, Hu, and Chen-Sogge. The improvements are logarithmic on negatively curved manifolds (without boundary) and by $o(1)$ for manifolds (with or without boundary) with ergodic geodesic flows. In the case of ergodic billiards with piecewise smooth boundary, we get $o(1)$ improvements on $L^\infty$ estimates of Cauchy data away from a shrinking neighborhood of the corners, and as a result using the methods of Ghosh-Reznikov-Sarnak and Jung-Zelditch, we get that the number of nodal domains of two dimensional ergodic billiards tends to infinity as $λ\to \infty$. These results work only for a full density subsequence of any given orthonormal basis of eigenfunctions. We also present an extension of the $L^p$ estimates of Burq-Gérard-Tzvetkov, Hu, and Chen-Sogge, for the restrictions of Dirichlet and Neumann eigenfunctions to compact submanifolds of the interior of manifolds with piecewise smooth boundary. This part does not assume ergodicity on the manifolds.

Inner radius of nodal domains of quantum ergodic eigenfunctions

In this short note we show that the lower bounds of Mangoubi on the inner radius of nodal domains can be improved for quantum ergodic sequences of eigenfunctions, according to a certain power of the radius of shrinking balls on which the eigenfunctions equidistribute. We prove such improvements using a quick application of our recent results (arXiv:1606.02057), which give modified growth estimates for eigenfunctions that equidistribute on small balls. Since by the results of Han and Hezari-Rivière small scale QE holds for negatively curved manifolds on logarithmically shrinking balls, we get logarithmic improvements on the inner radius of such manifolds. We also get improvements for manifolds with ergodic geodesic flows. In addition using the small scale equidistribution results of Lester-Rudnick, one gets polynomial betterments of for toral eigenfunctions in dimensions $n \geq 3$. The results work only for a full density subsequence of eigenfunctions.

Applications of small scale quantum ergodicity in nodal sets

The goal of this article is to draw new applications of small scale quantum ergodicity in nodal sets of eigenfunctions. We show that if quantum ergodicity holds on balls of shrinking radius $r(λ) \to 0$, then one can achieve improvements on the recent upper bounds of Logunov and Logunov-Malinnikova on the size of nodal sets, according to a certain power of $r(λ)$. We also show that the order of vanishing results of Donnelly-Fefferman and Dong can be improved. Since by the results of Han and Hezari-Rivière small scale QE holds on negatively curved manifolds at logarithmically shrinking rates, we get logarithmic improvements on such manifolds for the above measurements of eigenfunctions. We also get $o(1)$ improvements for manifolds with ergodic geodesic flows. Our results work for a full density subsequence of any given orthonormal basis of eigenfunctions.

The Neumann isospectral problem for trapezoids

We show that trapezoids with identical Neumann spectra are congruent up to rigid motions of the plane. The proof is based on heat trace invariants and some new wave trace invariants associated to certain diffractive billiard trajectories. The reason we can only treat the Neumann case is that the wave trace is "more singular" for the Neumann case compared to the Dirichlet case. This is a new observation which is interesting on its own.

Completeness of boundary traces of eigenfunctions

In this paper, we study the boundary traces of eigenfunctions on the boundary of a smooth and bounded domain. An identity derived by Bäcker, Fürstburger, Schubert, and Steiner, expressing (in some sense) the asymptotic completeness of the set of boundary traces in a frequency window of size O(1), is proved both for Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We then prove a semiclassical generalization of this identity.

$L^p$ norms, nodal sets, and quantum ergodicity

For small range of $p>2$, we improve the $L^p$ bounds of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on negatively curved manifolds. Our improvement is by a power of logarithm for a full density sequence of eigenfunctions. We also derive improvements on the size of the nodal sets. Our proof is based on a quantum ergodicity property of independent interest, which holds for families of symbols supported in balls whose radius shrinks at a logarithmic rate.

Quantitative equidistribution properties of toral eigenfunctions

We prove quantitative equidistribution properties for orthonormal bases of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the rational $d$-torus. We show that the rate of equidistribution of such eigenfunctions is of polynomial decay. We also prove that equidistribution of eigenfunctions holds for symbols supported in balls with a radius shrinking at a polynomial rate.
