Oscillation-Free Unconventional Photon Blockade from Quadrature Driving of a Kerr Dimer

We demonstrate unconventional photon blockade in a symmetric Kerr dimer driven with equal-amplitude fields at a $90^\circ$ phase difference. The minimum inter-cavity coupling is $J_{\min} = \gamma/4$ at a Kerr nonlinearity $U \ll \gamma$ achievable in standard photonic molecules. The quadrature-driven site emits strongly antibunched light with a smooth, oscillation-free second-order correlator directly resolvable with standard detectors. The scheme operates under continuous-wave and pulsed excitation, and fabrication disorder can be fully compensated by re-tuning the drive phase and amplitude ratio, removing the need for post-fabrication cavity trimming

Nonlinear Rydberg exciton-polaritons in Cu$_2$O microcavities

Rydberg excitons (analogues of Rydberg atoms in condensed matter systems) are highly excited bound electron-hole states with large Bohr radii. The interaction between them as well as exciton coupling to light may lead to strong optical nonlinearity, with applications in sensing and quantum information processing. Here, we achieve strong effective photon-photon interactions (Kerr-like optical nonlinearity) via the Rydberg blockade phenomenon and the hybridisation of excitons and photons forming polaritons in a Cu$_2$O-filled microresonators. Under pulsed resonant excitation polariton resonance frequencies are renormalised due to the reduction of the photon-exciton coupling with increasing exciton density. Theoretical analysis shows that the Rydberg blockade plays a major role in the experimentally observed scaling of the polariton nonlinearity coefficient as $\propto n^{4.4 \pm 1.8}$ for principal quantum numbers up to n = 7. Such high principal quantum numbers studied in a polariton system for the first time are essential for realisation of high Rydberg optical nonlinearities, which paves the way towards quantum optical applications and fundamental studies of strongly-correlated photonic (polaritonic) states in a solid state system.

Quantum confined Rydberg excitons in Cu$_2$O nanoparticles

The quantum confinement of Rydberg excitons is an important step towards exploiting their large nonlinearities for quantum applications. We observe Rydberg excitons in natural nanoparticles of Cu$_2$O. We resolve up to the principal quantum number $n=12$ in a bulk Cu$_2$O crystal and up to $n=6$ in nanoparticles extracted from the same crystal. The exciton transitions in nanoparticles are broadened and their oscillator strengths decrease as $\propto n^{-4}$ compared to those in the bulk (decreasing as $\propto n^{-3}$). We explain our results by including the effect of quantum confinement of exciton states in the nanoparticles. Our results provide an understanding of the physics of Cu$_2$O Rydberg excitons in confined dimensions.

Half-Skyrmion Spin Textures In Polariton Microcavities

We study the polarization dynamics of a spatially expanding polariton condensate under nonresonant linearly polarized optical excitation. The spatially and temporally resolved polariton emission reveals the formation of non-trivial spin textures in the form of a quadruplet polarization pattern both in the linear and circular Stokes parameters, and an octuplet in the diagonal Stokes parameter. The continuous rotation of the polariton pseudospin vector through the condensate due to TE-TM splitting exhibits an ordered pattern of half-skyrmions associated with a half-integer topological number. A theoretical model based on a driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation coupled with an exciton reservoir describes the dynamics of the nontrivial spin textures through the optical spin-Hall effect.

Polariton Spin Whirls

We report on the observation of spin whirls in a radially expanding polariton condensate formed under non-resonant optical excitation. Real space imaging of polarization- and time-resolved photoluminescence reveal a spiralling polarization pattern in the plane of the microcavity. Simulations of the spatiotemporal dynamics of a spinor condensate reveal the crucial role of polariton interactions with a spinor exciton reservoir. Harnessing spin dependent interactions between the exciton reservoir and polariton condensates allows for the manipulation of spin currents and the realization of dynamic collective spin effects in solid state systems.

Fractional quantum mechanics in polariton condensates with velocity dependent mass

We introduce and analyze a novel mean-field model for polariton condensates with velocity dependence of the effective polariton mass due the photon and exciton components. The effective mass depends on the in-plane wave vector k, which at the inflection point of the lower polariton energy branch becomes infinite and above negative. The polariton condensate modes of the new mean-field theory are now sensitive to mass variations and for certain points of the energy dispersion the polariton condensate mode represents fractional quantum mechanics. The impact of the generalized kinetic energy term is elucidated by numerical studies in 1D and 2D showing significant differences for large velocities. Analytical expressions for plane wave solutions as well as a linear waves analysis show the significance of this new model.

Crossover from exciton-polariton to photon Bose-Einstein condensation

BEC of exciton-polaritons and related effects such as superfluidity1,2, spontaneous symmetry breaking3,4 and quantised vortices5,6 open way to creation of novel light sources7 and optical logic elements8. Remarkable observations of exciton-polariton BEC in microcavities9-12 have been reported in the recent ten years. Very recently, thermalisation and subsequent condensation of cavity photons in a dye-filled microcavity have been observed13. Here we show that BEC of both exciton-polaritons and photons can be created in the same system under different optical excitation conditions. A dynamic phase transition between a photon and a polariton BEC takes place after a single high-power excitation pulse and we find both condensed states in thermal equilibrium with the excited states. At the crossover, photons and polaritons coexist, which results in a decrease in the long-range spatial coherence. Build-up and successive depinning of polarisation is observed at the threshold of both polariton and photon condensation.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in a polariton and photon laser

We report on the simultaneous observation of spontaneous symmetry breaking and long-range spatial coherence both in the strong and the weak-coupling regime in a semiconductor microcavity. Under pulsed excitation, the formation of a stochastic order parameter is observed in polariton and photon lasing regimes. Single-shot measurements of the Stokes vector of the emission exhibit the buildup of stochastic polarization. Below threshold, the polarization noise does not exceed 10%, while above threshold we observe a total polarization of up to 50% after each excitation pulse, while the polarization averaged over the ensemble of pulses remains nearly zero. In both polariton and photon lasing regimes, the stochastic polarization buildup is accompanied by the buildup of spatial coherence. We find that the Landau criterion of spontaneous symmetry breaking and Penrose-Onsager criterion of long-range order for Bose-Einstein condensation are met in both polariton and photon lasing regimes.

The Non-linear Optical Spin Hall Effect and Long-Range Spin Transport in Polariton Lasers

We report on the experimental observation of the non-linear analogue of the optical spin Hall effect under highly non-resonant circularly polarized excitation of an exciton polariton condensate in a GaAs/AlGaAs microcavity. Initially circularly polarized polariton condensates propagate over macroscopic distances while the collective condensate spins coherently precess around an effective magnetic field in the sample plane performing up to four complete revolutions.

Magneto-optical trapping and background-free imaging for atoms near nanostructured surfaces

We demonstrate a combined magneto-optical trap and imaging system that is suitable for the investigation of cold atoms near surfaces. In particular, we are able to trap atoms close to optically scattering surfaces and to image them with an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. We also demonstrate a simple magneto-optical atom cloud launching method. We anticipate that this system will be useful for a range of experimental studies of novel atom-surface interactions and atom trap miniaturization.
