Understanding the quantum Rabi ring using analogies to quantum magnetism

We map a quantum Rabi ring, consisting of $N$ cavities arranged in a ring geometry, into an effective magnetic model containing the XY exchange and the Dzyaloshinskii Moriya (DM) interactions. The analogue of the latter is induced by an artificial magnetic field, which modulates photon hopping between nearest-neighbor cavities with a phase. The mean-field behavior of both systems is almost identical, facilitating the description of the different phases in the quantum optical model through simple arguments of competing magnetic interactions. For the square geometry ($N=4$) the rich phase diagram exhibits three superradiant phases denoted as ferro-superradiant, antiferro-superradiant and chiral superradiant. In particular, the DM interaction is responsible for the chiral phase in which the energetically degenerate configurations of the order parameters are similar to the in-plane magnetizations of skyrmions with different helicities. The antiferro-superradiant phase is suppressed in the triangle geometry ($N=3$) as geometric frustration contributes to stabilize the chiral phase even for small values of the DM interaction. The chiral phases for odd and even $N$ show a different scaling behavior close to the phase transition. The equivalent behavior on both systems opens the possibility of simulating chiral magnetism in a few-body quantum optical platform, as well as understanding one system using the insights gained from the other.

Spin-charge separation in a 1D Fermi gas with tunable interactions

Ultracold atoms confined to periodic potentials have proven to be a powerful tool for quantum simulation of complex many-body systems. We confine fermions to one-dimension to realize the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid model describing the highly collective nature of their low-energy excitations. We use Bragg spectroscopy to directly excite either the spin or charge wave for various strength of repulsive interaction. We observe that the velocity of the spin and charge excitations shift in opposite directions with increasing interaction, a hallmark of spin-charge separation. The excitation spectra are in quantitative agreement with the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, and furthermore, we find that the spin excitations become dispersive at large interaction, signaling the onset of the nonlinear Luttinger liquid regime.

Strongly Interacting Two-component Coupled Bose Gas in Optical Lattices

Two-component coupled Bose gas in a 1D optical lattice is examined. In addition to the postulated Mott insulator and superfluid phases, multiple bosonic components manifest spin degrees of freedom. Coupling of the components in the Bose gas leads to substantial change in the previously observed spin phases, giving rise to new effective spin Hamiltonian and unraveling remarkable spin correlations. The system exhibiting ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic spin phases for on-site intra-component interaction stronger than inter-component interaction switches from first-order to second-order phase transition between the spin phases upon introduction of coupling, on which is dependent the transition width. For comparable on-site inter- and intra- component interaction, with coupling, instead of one, two spin phases emerge with a second-order phase transition. Exact diagonalization and Variational Monte Carlo (VMC) with stochastic minimization on Entangled Plaquette State (EPS) bestow a unique and enhanced perspective into the system beyond the scope of a mean-field treatment.

Quantum tricriticality of chiral-coherent phase in quantum Rabi triangle

The interplay of interactions, symmetries and gauge fields usually leads to intriguing quantum many-body phases. To explore the nature of emerging phases, we study a quantum Rabi triangle system as an elementary building block for synthesizing an artificial magnetic field. We develop an analytical approach to study the rich phase diagram and the associated quantum criticality. Of particular interest is the emergence of a chiral-coherent phase, which breaks both the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and the chiral symmetry. In this chiral phase, photons flow unidirectionally and the chirality can be tuned by the artificial gauge field, exhibiting a signature of broken time-reversal symmetry. The finite-frequency scaling analysis further confirms the associated phase transition to be in the universality class of the Dicke model. This model can simulate a broad range of physical phenomena of light-matter coupling systems, and may have an application in future developments of various quantum information technologies.

Bose-Einstein condensates in an atom-optomechanical system with effective global non-uniform interaction

We consider a hybrid atom-optomechanical system consisting of a mechanical membrane inside an optical cavity and an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate outside the cavity. The condensate is confined in an optical lattice potential formed by a traveling laser beam reflected off one cavity mirror. We derive the cavity-mediated effective atom-atom interaction potential, and find that it is non-uniform, site-dependent, and does not decay as the interatomic distance increases. We show that the presence of this effective interaction breaks the Z$_2$ symmetry of the system and gives rise to new quantum phases and phase transitions. When the long-range interaction dominates, the condensate breaks the translation symmetry and turns into a novel self-organized lattice-like state with increasing particle densities for sites farther away from the cavity. We present the phase diagram of the system, and investigate the stabilities of different phases by calculating their respective excitation spectra. The system can serve as a platform to explore various self-organized phenomena induced by the long-range interactions.

Multicriticality and quantum fluctuation in generalized Dicke model

We consider an important generalization of the Dicke model in which multi-level atoms, instead of two-level atoms as in conventional Dicke model, interact with a single photonic mode. We explore the phase diagram of a broad class of atom-photon coupling schemes and show that, under this generalization, the Dicke model can become multicritical. For a subclass of experimentally realizable schemes, multicritical conditions of arbitrary order can be expressed analytically in compact forms. We also calculate the atom-photon entanglement entropy for both critical and non-critical cases. We find that the order of the criticality strongly affects the critical entanglement entropy: higher order yields stronger entanglement. Our work provides deep insight into quantum phase transitions and multicriticality.

Spin-Nematic Vortex States in Cold Atoms

The (pseudo-)spin degrees of freedom greatly enriches the physics of cold atoms. This is particularly so for systems with high spins (i.e., spin quantum number larger than 1/2). For example, one can construct not only the rank-1 spin vector, but also the rank-2 spin tensor in high spin systems. Here we propose a simple scheme to couple the spin tensor and the center-of-mass orbital angular momentum in a spin-1 cold atom system, and show that this leads to a new quantum phase of the matter: the spin-nematic vortex state that features vorticity in an SU(2) spin-nematic tensor subspace. Under proper conditions, such states are characterized by quantized topological numbers. Our work opens up new avenues of research in topological quantum matter with high spins.

Building Flat-Band Lattice Models from Gram Matrices

We propose a powerful and convenient method to systematically design flat-band lattice models, which overcomes the difficulties underlying the previous method. Especially, our method requires no elaborate calculations, applies to arbitrary spatial dimensions, and guarantees to result in a completely flat ground band. We use this method to generate several classes of lattice models, including models with both short- and long-range hoppings, both topologically trivial and non-trivial flat bands. Some of these models were previously known. Our method, however, provides crucial new insights. For example, we have reproduced and generalized the Kapit-Mueller model [Kapit and Mueller, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{105}, 215303 (2010)] and demonstrated a universal scaling rule between the flat band degeneracy and the magnetic flux that was not noticed in previous studies. We show that the flat band of this model results from the (over-)completeness properties of coherent states.

Perfect Intrinsic Squeezing at the Superradiant Phase Transition Critical Point

The ground state of the photon-matter coupled system described by the Dicke model is found to be perfectly squeezed at the quantum critical point of the superradiant phase transition (SRPT). In the presence of the counter-rotating photon-atom coupling, the ground state is analytically expressed as a two-mode squeezed vacuum in the basis of photons and atomic collective excitations. The variance of a quantum fluctuation in the two-mode basis vanishes at the SRPT critical point, with its conjugate fluctuation diverging, ideally satisfying the Heisenberg uncertainty principle.

Dynamical Fermionization in One Dimensional Spinor Gases

Dynamical fermionization refers to the phenomenon in Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gases where, upon release from harmonic confinement, the gas's momentum density profile evolves asymptotically to that of an ideal Fermi gas in the initial trap. This phenomenon has been demonstrated theoretically in hardcore and anyonic TG gases, and recently experimentally observed in a strongly interacting Bose gas. We extend this study to a one dimensional (1D) spinor gas of arbitrary spin in the strongly interacting regime, and analytically prove that the total momentum distribution after the harmonic trap is turned off approaches that of a spinless ideal Fermi gas, while the asymptotic momentum distribution of each spin component takes the same shape of the initial real space density profile of that spin component. Our work demonstrates the rich physics arising from the interplay between the spin and the charge degrees of freedom in a spinor system.

Emergence and disruption of spin-charge separation in one-dimensional repulsive fermions

At low temperature, collective excitations of one-dimensional (1D) interacting fermions exhibit spin-charge separation, a unique feature predicted by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) theory, but a rigorous understanding remains challenging. Using the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) formalism, we analytically derive universal properties of a 1D repulsive spin-1/2 Fermi gas with arbitrary interaction strength. We show how spin-charge separation emerges from the exact TBA formalism, and how it is disrupted by the interplay between the two degrees of freedom which brings us beyond the TLL paradigm. Based on the exact low-lying excitation spectra, we further evaluate the spin and charge dynamical structure factors (DSFs). The peaks of the DSFs exhibit distinguishable propagating velocities of spin and charge as functions of interaction strength, which can be observed by Bragg spectroscopy with ultracold atoms.

Spin squeezing in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the spin squeezing in a spin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) with Raman induced spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Under the condition of two-photon resonance and weak Raman coupling strength, the system possesses two degenerate ground states, using which we construct an effective two-mode model. The Hamiltonian of the two-mode model takes the form of the one-axis-twisting Hamiltonian which is known to generate spin squeezing. More importantly, we show that the SOC provides a convenient control knob to adjust the spin nonlinearity responsible for spin squeezing. Specifically, the spin nonlinearity strength can be tuned to be comparable to the two-body density-density interaction, hence is much larger than the intrinsic spin-dependent interaction strength in conventional two-component BEC systems such as $^{87}$Rb and $^{23}$Na in the absence of the SOC. We confirm the spin squeezing by carrying out a fully beyond-mean-field numerical calculation using the truncated Wigner method. Additionally, the experimental implementation is also discussed.

Non-Abelian geometric potentials and spin-orbit coupling for periodically driven systems

We demonstrate the emergence of the non-Abelian geometric potentials and thus the three-dimensional (3D) spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for ultracold atoms without using the laser beams. This is achieved by subjecting an atom to a periodic perturbation which is the product of a position-dependent Hermitian operator $\hat{V}\left(\mathbf{r}\right)$ and a fast oscillating periodic function $f\left(ωt\right)$ with a zero average. To have a significant spin-orbit coupling (SOC), we analyze a situation where the characteristic energy of the periodic driving is not necessarily small compared to the driving energy $\hbarω$. Applying a unitary transformation to eliminate the original periodic perturbation, we arrive at a non-Abelian (non-commuting) vector potential term describing the 3D SOC. The general formalism is illustrated by analyzing the motion of an atom in a spatially inhomogeneous magnetic field oscillating in time. A cylindrically symmetric magnetic field provides the SOC involving the coupling between the spin $\mathbf{F}$ and all three components of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) $\mathbf{L}$. In particular, the spherically symmetric monopole-type synthetic magnetic field $\mathbf{B}\propto\mathbf{r}$ generates the 3D SOC of the $\mathbf{L}\cdot \mathbf{F}$ form, which resembles the fine-structure interaction of hydrodgen atom. However, the strength of the SOC here goes as $1/r^{2}$ for larger distances, instead of $1/r^3$ as in atomic fine structure. Such a longer-ranged SOC significantly affects not only the lower states of the trapped atom, but also the higher ones. Furthermore, by properly tailoring the external trapping potential, the ground state of the system can occur at finite OAM, while the ground state of hydrogen atom has zero OAM.

Spin-exchange-induced exotic superfluids in a Bose-Fermi spinor mixture

We consider a mixture of spin-1/2 bosons and fermions, where only the bosons are subjected to the spin-orbit coupling induced by Raman beams. The fermions, although not directly coupled to the Raman lasers, acquire an effective spin-orbit coupling through the spin-exchange interaction between the two species. Our calculation shows that this is a promising way of obtaining spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas without Raman-induced heating, where the long-sought topological Fermi superfluids and topological bands can be realized. Conversely, we find that the presence of fermions not only provides a new way to create the supersolid stripe phase of the bosons, but more strikingly it can also greatly increase the spatial period of the bosonic density stripes, and hence makes this phase directly observable in the experiment. This system provides a new and practical platform to explore the physics of spin-orbit coupling, which possesses a dynamic nature through the interaction between the two species.

Deep Learning-Enhanced Variational Monte Carlo Method for Quantum Many-Body Physics

Artificial neural networks have been successfully incorporated into variational Monte Carlo method (VMC) to study quantum many-body systems. However, there have been few systematic studies of exploring quantum many-body physics using deep neural networks (DNNs), despite of the tremendous success enjoyed by DNNs in many other areas in recent years. One main challenge of implementing DNN in VMC is the inefficiency of optimizing such networks with large number of parameters. We introduce an importance sampling gradient optimization (ISGO) algorithm, which significantly improves the computational speed of training DNN in VMC. We design an efficient convolutional DNN architecture to compute the ground state of a one-dimensional (1D) SU($N$) spin chain. Our numerical results of the ground-state energies with up to 16 layers of DNN show excellent agreement with the Bethe-Ansatz exact solution. Furthermore, we also calculate the loop correlation function using the wave function obtained. Our work demonstrates the feasibility and advantages of applying DNNs to numerical quantum many-body calculations.

Emergent Universality in a Quantum Tricritical Dicke Model

We propose a generalized Dicke model which supports a quantum tricritical point. We map out the phase diagram and investigate the critical behaviors of the model through exact low-energy effective Hamiltonian in the thermodynamic limit. As predicted by the Landau theory of phase transition, the order parameter shows non-universality at the tricritical point. Nevertheless, as a result of the separation of the classical and the quantum degrees of freedom, we find a universal relation between the excitation gap and the entanglement entropy for the entire critical line including the tricritical point. Here the universality is carried by the emergent quantum modes, whereas the order parameter is determined classically.

Bose-Einstein condensate in Bloch bands with off-diagonal periodic potential

We report the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the Bloch bands with off-diagonal periodic potential (ODPP), which simultaneously plays the role of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Zeeman field. This model can be realized using two independent Raman couplings in the same three level system, in which the time-reversal symmetry ensures the energy degeneracy between the two states with opposite momenta. We find that these two Raman couplings can be used to tune the spin polarization in momentum space, thus greatly modifies the effective scatterings over the Bloch bands. We observe a transition from the Bloch plane wave phase with condensate at one wave vector to the Bloch stripe phase with condensates at the two Bloch states with opposite wave vectors. These two phases will exhibit totally different spin textures and density modulations in real space, which are totally different from that in free space. In momentum space multiple peaks differ by some reciprocal lattice vectors can be observed, reflecting the periodic structure of the ODPP. A three-band effective model is proposed to understand these observations. This system can provide a new platform in investigating of various physics, such as collective excitations, polaron and topological superlfuids, over the Bloch bands.

Field-induced topological pair-density wave states in a multilayer optical lattice

We study the superfluid phases of a Fermi gas in a multilayer optical lattice system in the presence of out-of-plane Zeeman field, as well as spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We show that the Zeeman field combined with the SO coupling leads to exotic topological pair-density wave (PDW) phases in which different layers possess different superfluid order parameters, even though each layer experiences the same Zeeman field and the SO coupling. We elucidate the mechanism of the emerging PDW phases, and characterize their topological properties by calculating the associated Chern numbers.
