Creating stable molecular condensate using a generalized Raman adiabatic passage scheme

We study the Feshbach resonance assisted stimulated adiabatic passage of an effective coupling field for creating stable molecules from atomic Bose condensate. By exploring the properties of the coherent population trapping state, we show that, contrary to the previous belief, mean-field shifts need not to limit the conversion efficiency as long as one chooses an adiabatic passage route that compensates the collision mean-field phase shifts and avoids the dynamical unstable regime.

Wave mixing of optical pulses and Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate theoretically the four-wave mixing of optical and matter waves resulting from the scattering of a short light pulse off an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, as recently demonstrated by D. Schneble {\em et al.} [ Science {\bf 300}, 475 (2003)]. We show that atomic ``pair production'' from the condensate results in the generation of both forward- and backward-propagating matter waves. These waves are characterized by different phase-matching conditions, resulting in different angular distributions and temporal evolutions.

A fundamental limit for integrated atom optics with Bose-Einstein condensates

The dynamical response of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate manipulated by an integrated atom optics device such as a microtrap or a microfabricated waveguide is studied. We show that when the miniaturization of the device enforces a sufficiently high condensate density, three-body interactions lead to a spatial modulational instability that results in a fundamental limit on the coherent manipulation of Bose-Einstein condensates.

Feshbach-resonance-induced atomic filamentation and quantum pair correlation in atom-laser-beam propagation

We study the propagation of an atom laser beam through a spatial region with a magnetic field tuned to a Feshbach resonance. Tuning the magnetic field below the resonance produces an effective focusing Kerr medium that causes a modulational instability of the atomic beam. Under appropriate circumstances, this results in beam breakup and filamentation seeded by quasi-particle fluctuations, and in the generation of correlated atomic pairs.

Two-fermion bound state in a Bose-Einstein condensate

A nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived for the dynamics of a beam of ultracold fermionic atoms traversing a Bose-Einstein condensate. The condensate phonon modes are shown to provide a nonlinear medium for the fermionic atoms. A two-fermion bound state is predicted to arise, and the signature of the bound state in a nonlinear atom optics experiment is discussed.

Magnetism in a lattice of spinor Bose condensates

We study the ground state magnetic properties of ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a deep optical lattices. In the Mott insulator regime, the ``mini-condensates'' at each lattice site behave as mesoscopic spin magnets that can interact with neighboring sites through both the static magnetic dipolar interaction and the light-induced dipolar interaction. We show that such an array of spin magnets can undergo a ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic phase transition under the magnetic dipolar interaction depending on the dimension of the confining optical lattice. The ground-state spin configurations and related magnetic properties are investigated in detail.

Macroscopic spin tunneling and quantum critical behavior of a condensate in double-well potential

In a previous work (PRL 87, 140405), we have shown that a spinor condensate confined in a periodic or double-well potential exhibits ferromagnetic behavior due to the magnetic dipole-dipole interactions between different wells, and in the absence of external magnetic field, the ground state has a two-fold degeneracy. In this work, we demonstrate the possibility of observing macroscopic quantum spin tunneling between these two degenerate states and show how the tunneling rate critically depends on the strength of the transverse field.

Spin waves in a Bose-condensed atomic spin chain

The spin dynamics of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a one-dimensional optical lattice is studied. The condensates at each lattice site behave like spin magnets that can interact with each other through both the light-induced dipole-dipole interaction and the static magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. We show how these site-to-site dipolar interactions can distort the ground state spin orientations and lead to the excitation of spin waves. The dispersion relation of the spin waves is studied and possible detection schemes are proposed.

Ferromagnetism in a lattice of Bose condensates

We show that an ensemble of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a one dimensional optical lattice can undergo a ferromagnetic phase transition and spontaneous magnetization arises due to the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. This phenomenon is analogous to ferromagnetism in solid state physics, but occurs with bosons instead of fermions.

Phonon spectrum and dynamical stability of a quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture

We calculate the phonon excitation spectrum in a zero-temperature boson-fermion mixture. We show how the sound velocity changes due to the boson-fermion interaction and we determine the dynamical stability regime of a homogeneous mixture. We identify a resonant phonon-exchange interaction between the fermions as the physical mechanism leading to the instability.
