Observation of two-photon interference effect with single non-photon-number resolving detector

Multiphoton interference effects can be measured with a single detector when two input photons are temporally well separated when compared with the dead time of the single-photon avalanche detector. Here we experimentally demonstrate that the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference effect can be observed with a single non-photon-number resolving detector via a time-delayed coincidence measurement of successive electrical signals from the detector. The two-photon interference experiment is performed by utilizing temporally well-separated pairwise weak coherent pulses and the interference fringes are successfully measured with a high visibility in the range of the limited upper bound for the weak coherent photon source.

Two-photon interference of temporally separated photons

We present experimental demonstrations of two-photon interference involving temporally separated photons within two types of interferometers: a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a polarization-based Michelson interferometer. The two-photon states are probabilistically prepared in a symmetrically superposed state within the two interferometer arms by introducing a large time delay between two input photons; this state is composed of two temporally separated photons, which are in two different or the same spatial modes. We then observe two-photon interference fringes involving both the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference effect and the interference of path-entangled two-photon states simultaneously in a single interferometric setup. The observed two-photon interference fringes provide simultaneous observation of the interferometric properties of the single-photon and two-photon wavepackets. The observations can also facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of the origins of the interference phenomena arising from spatially bunched/anti-bunched two-photon states comprised of two temporally separated photons within the interferometer arms.

Highly bright photon-pair generation in Doppler-broadened ladder-type atomic system

We report a bright photon-pair source with a coincidence counting rate per input power (cps/mW) of tens of thousands, obtained via spontaneous four-wave mixing from a Doppler-broadened atomic ensemble of the 5S1/2-5P3/2-5D5/2 transition of 87Rb. The photon-pair generation rate is enhanced by the two-photon coherence contributions from almost all the atomic velocity groups in the Doppler-broadened ladder-type atomic system. We obtained the violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality by a factor of 2370(150). We believe that our scheme for highly bright paired photons is important as a useful quantum light source for quantum entanglement swapping between completely autonomous sources.

Superradiant Emission of Ultra-Bright Photon Pairs in Doppler-Broadened Atomic Ensemble

With a recent rising interest of single photon superradiance due to its potential usefulness for efficient collection of single photon from an atomic ensemble, bright and narrow photon pair source is a key component in realization of quantum communication and quantum computer based on coherent interaction between light and atomic ensemble. We report the superradiant emission of ultra-bright photon pairs with a coincidence counting rate per input power of 64,600 cps/mW via spontaneous four-wave mixing in a thermal vapour cell. The photon-pair generation rate is enhanced by the contribution of two-photon coherence of almost atomic velocity groups in the Doppler-broadened ladder-type atomic system. The quadratic proportionality of the probability of detecting a heralded single photon as a function of the optical depth clarifies that the ultra-brightness results from the superradiance. In addition, a single photon superradiant beating at a high optical depth of the atomic ensemble is observed for the first time.

Polarization-entangled photon-pair source obtained via type-II non-collinear SPDC process with PPKTP crystal

We demonstrate a polarization-entangled photon-pair source obtained via a type-II non-collinear quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion process with a 10-mm periodically poled KTiOPO$_4$ crystal, which is as stable and wavelength-tunable as the well-known Sagnac configuration scheme. A brightness of 4.2 kHz/mW is detected and a concurrence of 0.975 is estimated using quantum state tomography. Without loss of entanglement and brightness, the photon-pair wavelengths are tunable through control of the crystal temperature. This improvement is achieved using the non-collinear configuration and a stable interferometric distinguishability compensator.

Equal-fidelity surface for a qubit state via equal-distance extended Bloch vectors and derivatives

We describe and characterize an equal-fidelity surface in Bloch space targeted for a qubit state by means of equal-distance concept. The distance is generalized and defined as the Euclidean distance between extended Bloch vectors for arbitrary dimensional states. The distance is a genuine distance according to the definition and is related to other distances between quantum states and super-fidelity.

Three-photon coherence in a ladder-type atomic system

We present a theoretical study of three-photon electromagnetically induced absorption for a ladder-type three-level atomic system. A probe beam was tuned to the lower line and two counter-propagating, linearly polarized coupling beams were tuned to the upper line. The system can be modeled with a three- (or five-) level scheme when the polarization directions of the coupling beams are parallel (or perpendicular). By calculating the absorption coefficients analytically for the two schemes, we found that the corresponding absorption coefficients were identical except for different transition strengths, and that the primitive scheme embedded in those schemes was a simple four-level scheme.

Highly efficient source for frequency-entangled photon pairs generated in a 3rd order periodically poled MgO-doped stoichiometric LiTaO3 crystal

We present a highly efficient source for discrete frequency-entangled photon pairs based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion using 3rd order type-0 quasi-phase matching in a periodically poled MgO-doped stoichiometric LiTaO3 crystal pumped by a 355.66 nm laser. Correlated two-photon states were generated with automatic conservation of energy and momentum in two given spatial modes. These states have a wide spectral range, even under small variations in crystal temperature, which consequently results in higher discreteness. Frequency entanglement was confirmed by measuring two-photon quantum interference fringes without any spectral filtering.

Generalized quantum interference of correlated photon pairs

Superposition and indistinguishablility between probability amplitudes have played an essential role in observing quantum interference effects of correlated photons. The Hong-Ou-Mandel interference and interferences of the path-entangled photon number state are of special interest in the field of quantum information technologies. However, a fully generalized two-photon quantum interferometric scheme accounting for the Hong-Ou-Mandel scheme and path-entangled photon number states has not yet been proposed. Here we report the experimental demonstrations of the generalized two-photon interferometry with both the interferometric properties of the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect and the fully unfolded version of the path-entangled photon number state using photon-pair sources, which are independently generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Our experimental scheme explains two-photon interference fringes revealing single- and two-photon coherence properties in a single interferometer setup. Using the proposed interferometric measurement, it is possible to directly estimate the joint spectral intensity of a photon pair source.

Quantum coherence and population transfer in a driven cascade three-level artificial atom

We present an experimental investigation on the spectral characteristics of an artificial atom "transmon qubit" constituting a three-level cascade system (Ξ-system) in the presence of a pair of external driving fields. We observe two different types of Autler-Townes (AT) splitting: type I, where the phenomenon of two-photon resonance tends to diminish as the coupling field strength increases, and type II, where this phenomenon mostly stays constant. We find that the types are determined by the cooperative effect of the decay rates and the field strengths. Theoretically analyzing the density-matrix elements in the weak-field limit where the AT effect is suppressed, we single out events of pure two-photon coherence occurring owing to constructive quantum interference.

Experimental demonstration of error-insensitive approximate universal-NOT gates

We propose and experimentally demonstrate an approximate universal-NOT (U-NOT) operation that is robust against operational errors. In our proposal, the U-NOT operation is composed of stochastic unitary operations represented by the vertices of regular polyhedrons. The operation is designed to be robust against random operational errors by increasing the number of unitary operations (i.e., reference axes). Remarkably, no increase in the total number of measurements nor additional resources are required to perform the U-NOT operation. Our method can be applied in general to reduce operational errors to an arbitrary degree of precision when approximating any anti-unitary operation in a stochastic manner.

An atom optics experiment to investigate faster-than-light tunneling

We describe a series of atom optics experiments underway at Toronto for investigating tunnelling interaction times of various sorts. We begin by discussing some outstanding issues and confusions related to the question of whether or not superluminal tunnelling can be construed as true faster-than-light ``signal propagation,'' a question which we answer in the negative. We then argue that atom optics is an arena ideally suited for addressing a variety of remaining questions about how, where, and for how long a particle interacts with a tunnel barrier. We present recent results on a modified ``delta-kick cooling'' scheme which we have used to prepare Rubidium atoms with one-dimensional de Broglie wavelengths on the order of an optical wavelength, along with simulations showing that from these temperatures, we will be able to use acousto-optically modulated dipole-force barriers to velocity-select ultracold atom samples ideal for future tunnelling experiments.
