Atomistic Mechanism of Phase Transition in Shock Compressed Gold Revealed by Deep Potential

A detailed understanding of the material response to rapid compression is challenging and demanding. For instance, the element gold under dynamic compression exhibits complex phase transformations where there exist some large discrepancies between experimental and theoretical studies. Here, we combined large-scale molecular dynamics simulations with a deep potential to elucidate the dynamic compression processes of gold from an atomic level. The potential is constructed by accurately reproducing the free energy surfaces of density-functional-theory calculations for gold, from ambient conditions to 15 500 K and 500 GPa. Within this framework, we extend the simulations up to 200 000 atoms size, and found a much lower pressure threshold for phase transitioning from face-centered cubic (FCC) to body-centered (BCC), as compared to previous calculations. Furthermore, the transition pressure is strongly dependent on the shock direction, namely 159 GPa for (100) orientation and 219 GPa for (110) orientation, respectively. Most importantly, the accurate atomistic perspective presents that the shocked BCC structure contains unique features of medium-range and short-range orders, which is named disorders here. We propose a model and demonstrate that the existence of disorders significantly reduces the Gibbs free energies of shocked structures, therefore leading to the lowering of the phase transition pressure. The present study provides a new path to understand the structure dynamics under extreme conditions.

F-LOAM: Fast LiDAR Odometry And Mapping

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) has wide robotic applications such as autonomous driving and unmanned aerial vehicles. Both computational efficiency and localization accuracy are of great importance towards a good SLAM system. Existing works on LiDAR based SLAM often formulate the problem as two modules: scan-to-scan match and scan-to-map refinement. Both modules are solved by iterative calculation which are computationally expensive. In this paper, we propose a general solution that aims to provide a computationally efficient and accurate framework for LiDAR based SLAM. Specifically, we adopt a non-iterative two-stage distortion compensation method to reduce the computational cost. For each scan input, the edge and planar features are extracted and matched to a local edge map and a local plane map separately, where the local smoothness is also considered for iterative pose optimization. Thorough experiments are performed to evaluate its performance in challenging scenarios, including localization for a warehouse Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) and a public dataset on autonomous driving. The proposed method achieves a competitive localization accuracy with a processing rate of more than 10 Hz in the public dataset evaluation, which provides a good trade-off between performance and computational cost for practical applications.

Retrieval Enhanced Model for Commonsense Generation

Commonsense generation is a challenging task of generating a plausible sentence describing an everyday scenario using provided concepts. Its requirement of reasoning over commonsense knowledge and compositional generalization ability even puzzles strong pre-trained language generation models. We propose a novel framework using retrieval methods to enhance both the pre-training and fine-tuning for commonsense generation. We retrieve prototype sentence candidates by concept matching and use them as auxiliary input. For fine-tuning, we further boost its performance with a trainable sentence retriever. We demonstrate experimentally on the large-scale CommonGen benchmark that our approach achieves new state-of-the-art results.

Tuning magnetic and optical properties through strain in epitaxial LaCrO3 thin films

We report on the effect of epitaxial strain on magnetic and optical properties of perovskite LaCrO3 (LCO) single crystal thin films. Epitaxial LCO thin films are grown by pulsed laser deposition on proper choice of substrates to impose different strain states. A combined experimental and theoretical approach is used to demonstrate the direct correlation between lattice-strain and functional properties. The magnetization results show that the lattice anisotropy plays a critical role in controlling the magnetic behavior of LCO films. The strain induced tetragonality in the film lattice strongly affects the optical transitions and charge transfer gap in LCO. This study opens new possibilities to tailoring the functional properties of LCO and related materials by strain engineering in epitaxial growth.

Analyses of Laser Propagation Noises for TianQin Gravitational Wave Observatory Based on the Global Magnetosphere MHD Simulations

TianQin is a proposed space-borne gravitational wave (GW) observatory composed of three identical satellites orbiting around the geocenter with a radius of $10^5$ km. It aims at detecting GWs in the frequency range of 0.1 mHz -- 1 Hz. The detection of GW relies on the high precision measurement of optical path length at $10^{-12}$~m level. The dispersion of space plasma can lead to the optical path difference (OPD, $Δl$) along the propagation of laser beams between any pair of satellites. Here, we study the OPD noises for TianQin. The Space Weather Modeling Framework is used to simulate the interaction between the Earth magnetosphere and solar wind. From the simulations, we extract the magnetic field and plasma parameters on the orbits of TianQin at four relative positions of the satellite constellation in the Earth magnetosphere. We calculate the OPD noise for single link, Michelson combination, and Time-Delay Interferometry (TDI) combinations ($α$ and $X$). For single link and Michelson interferometer, the maxima of $|Δl|$ are on the order of 1 pm. For the TDI combinations, these can be suppressed to about 0.004 and 0.008 pm for $α$ and $X$. The OPD noise of the Michelson combination is colored in the concerned frequency range; while the ones for the TDI combinations are approximately white. Furthermore, we calculate the ratio of the equivalent strain of the OPD noise to that of TQ, and find that the OPD noises for the TDI combinations can be neglected in the most sensitive frequency range of TQ.

Personalized Entity Resolution with Dynamic Heterogeneous Knowledge Graph Representations

The growing popularity of Virtual Assistants poses new challenges for Entity Resolution, the task of linking mentions in text to their referent entities in a knowledge base. Specifically, in the shopping domain, customers tend to use implicit utterances (e.g., "organic milk") rather than explicit names, leading to a large number of candidate products. Meanwhile, for the same query, different customers may expect different results. For example, with "add milk to my cart", a customer may refer to a certain organic product, while some customers may want to re-order products they regularly purchase. To address these issues, we propose a new framework that leverages personalized features to improve the accuracy of product ranking. We first build a cross-source heterogeneous knowledge graph from customer purchase history and product knowledge graph to jointly learn customer and product embeddings. After that, we incorporate product, customer, and history representations into a neural reranking model to predict which candidate is most likely to be purchased for a specific customer. Experiments show that our model substantially improves the accuracy of the top ranked candidates by 24.6% compared to the state-of-the-art product search model.

Accurate Deep Potential model for the Al-Cu-Mg alloy in the full concentration space

Combining first-principles accuracy and empirical-potential efficiency for the description of the potential energy surface (PES) is the philosopher's stone for unraveling the nature of matter via atomistic simulation. This has been particularly challenging for multi-component alloy systems due to the complex and non-linear nature of the associated PES. In this work, we develop an accurate PES model for the Al-Cu-Mg system by employing Deep Potential (DP), a neural network based representation of the PES, and DP Generator (DP-GEN), a concurrent-learning scheme that generates a compact set of ab initio data for training. The resulting DP model gives predictions consistent with first-principles calculations for various binary and ternary systems on their fundamental energetic and mechanical properties, including formation energy, equilibrium volume, equation of state, interstitial energy, vacancy and surface formation energy, as well as elastic moduli. Extensive benchmark shows that the DP model is ready and will be useful for atomistic modeling of the Al-Cu-Mg system within the full range of concentration.

Robopheus: A Virtual-Physical Interactive Mobile Robotic Testbed

The mobile robotic testbed is an essential and critical support to verify the effectiveness of mobile robotics research. This paper introduces a novel multi-robot testbed, named Robopheus, which exploits the ideas of virtual-physical modeling in digital-twin. Unlike most existing testbeds, the developed Robopheus constructs a bridge that connects the traditional physical hardware and virtual simulation testbeds, providing scalable, interactive, and high-fidelity simulations-tests on both sides. Another salient feature of the Robopheus is that it enables a new form to learn the actual models from the physical environment dynamically and is compatible with heterogeneous robot chassis and controllers. In turn, the virtual world's learned models are further leveraged to approximate the robot dynamics online on the physical side. Extensive experiments demonstrate the extraordinary performance of the Robopheus. Significantly, the physical-virtual interaction design increases the trajectory accuracy of a real robot by 300%, compared with that of not using the interaction.

An Energy Sharing Mechanism Achieving the Same Flexibility as Centralized Dispatch

Deploying distributed renewable energy at the demand side is an important measure to implement a sustainable society. However, the massive small solar and wind generation units are beyond the control of a central operator. To encourage users to participate in energy management and reduce the dependence on dispatchable resources, a peer-to-peer energy sharing scheme is proposed which releases the flexibility at the demand side. Every user makes decision individually considering only local constraints; the microgrid operator announces the sharing prices subjective to the coupling constraints without knowing users' local constraints. This can help protect privacy. We prove that the proposed mechanism can achieve the same disutility and flexibility as centralized dispatch, and develop an effective modified best response based algorithm for reaching the market equilibrium. The concept of absorbable region is presented to measure the operating flexibility under the proposed energy sharing mechanism. A linear programming based polyhedral projection algorithm is developed to compute that region. Case studies validate the theoretical results and show that the proposed method is scalable.

Intensity-SLAM: Intensity Assisted Localization and Mapping for Large Scale Environment

Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) is a task to estimate the robot location and to reconstruct the environment based on observation from sensors such as LIght Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) and camera. It is widely used in robotic applications such as autonomous driving and drone delivery. Traditional LiDAR-based SLAM algorithms mainly leverage the geometric features from the scene context, while the intensity information from LiDAR is ignored. Some recent deep-learning-based SLAM algorithms consider intensity features and train the pose estimation network in an end-to-end manner. However, they require significant data collection effort and their generalizability to environments other than the trained one remains unclear. In this paper we introduce intensity features to a SLAM system. And we propose a novel full SLAM framework that leverages both geometry and intensity features. The proposed SLAM involves both intensity-based front-end odometry estimation and intensity-based back-end optimization. Thorough experiments are performed including both outdoor autonomous driving and indoor warehouse robot manipulation. The results show that the proposed method outperforms existing geometric-only LiDAR SLAM methods.

Lightweight 3-D Localization and Mapping for Solid-State LiDAR

The LIght Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) sensor has become one of the most important perceptual devices due to its important role in simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Existing SLAM methods are mainly developed for mechanical LiDAR sensors, which are often adopted by large scale robots. Recently, the solid-state LiDAR is introduced and becomes popular since it provides a cost-effective and lightweight solution for small scale robots. Compared to mechanical LiDAR, solid-state LiDAR sensors have higher update frequency and angular resolution, but also have smaller field of view (FoV), which is very challenging for existing LiDAR SLAM algorithms. Therefore, it is necessary to have a more robust and computationally efficient SLAM method for this new sensing device. To this end, we propose a new SLAM framework for solid-state LiDAR sensors, which involves feature extraction, odometry estimation, and probability map building. The proposed method is evaluated on a warehouse robot and a hand-held device. In the experiments, we demonstrate both the accuracy and efficiency of our method using an Intel L515 solid-state LiDAR. The results show that our method is able to provide precise localization and high quality mapping. We made the source codes public at \url{https://github.com/wh200720041/SSL_SLAM}.

The Phase Diagram of a Deep Potential Water Model

Using the Deep Potential methodology, we construct a model that reproduces accurately the potential energy surface of the SCAN approximation of density functional theory for water, from low temperature and pressure to about 2400 K and 50 GPa, excluding the vapor stability region. The computational efficiency of the model makes it possible to predict its phase diagram using molecular dynamics. Satisfactory overall agreement with experimental results is obtained. The fluid phases, molecular and ionic, and all the stable ice polymorphs, ordered and disordered, are predicted correctly, with the exception of ice III and XV that are stable in experiments, but metastable in the model. The evolution of the atomic dynamics upon heating, as ice VII transforms first into ice VII$''$ and then into an ionic fluid, reveals that molecular dissociation and breaking of the ice rules coexist with strong covalent fluctuations, explaining why only partial ionization was inferred in experiments.

Feasible Computationally Efficient Path Planning for UAV Collision Avoidance

This paper presents a robust computationally efficient real-time collision avoidance algorithm for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), namely Memory-based Wall Following-Artificial Potential Field (MWF-APF) method. The new algorithm switches between Wall-Following Method (WFM) and Artificial Potential Field method (APF) with improved situation awareness capability. Historical trajectory is taken into account to avoid repetitive wrong decision. Furthermore, it can be effectively applied to platform with low computing capability. As an example, a quad-rotor equipped with limited number of Time-of-Flight (TOF) rangefinders is adopted to validate the effectiveness and efficiency of this algorithm. Both software simulation and physical flight test have been conducted to demonstrate the capability of the MWF-APF method in complex scenarios.

Fast Loop Closure Detection via Binary Content

Loop closure detection plays an important role in reducing localization drift in Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM). It aims to find repetitive scenes from historical data to reset localization. To tackle the loop closure problem, existing methods often leverage on the matching of visual features, which achieve good accuracy but require high computational resources. However, feature point based methods ignore the patterns of image, i.e., the shape of the objects as well as the distribution of objects in an image. It is believed that this information is usually unique for a scene and can be utilized to improve the performance of traditional loop closure detection methods. In this paper we leverage and compress the information into a binary image to accelerate an existing fast loop closure detection method via binary content. The proposed method can greatly reduce the computational cost without sacrificing recall rate. It consists of three parts: binary content construction, fast image retrieval and precise loop closure detection. No offline training is required. Our method is compared with the state-of-the-art loop closure detection methods and the results show that it outperforms the traditional methods at both recall rate and speed.

Deep Potential generation scheme and simulation protocol for the Li10GeP2S12-type superionic conductors

It has been a challenge to accurately simulate Li-ion diffusion processes in battery materials at room temperature using {\it ab initio} molecular dynamics (AIMD) due to its high computational cost. This situation has changed drastically in recent years due to the advances in machine learning-based interatomic potentials. Here we implement the Deep Potential Generator scheme to \textit{automatically} generate interatomic potentials for LiGePS-type solid-state electrolyte materials. This increases our ability to simulate such materials by several orders of magnitude without sacrificing {\it ab initio} accuracy. Important technical aspects like the statistical error and size effects are carefully investigated. We further establish a reliable protocol for accurate computation of Li-ion diffusion processes at experimental conditions, by investigating important technical aspects like the statistical error and size effects. Such a protocol and the automated workflow allow us to screen materials for their relevant properties with much-improved efficiency. By using the protocol and automated workflow developed here, we obtain the diffusivity data and activation energies of Li-ion diffusion that agree well with the experiment. Our work paves the way for future investigation of Li-ion diffusion mechanisms and optimization of Li-ion conductivity of solid-state electrolyte materials.

DeePKS: a comprehensive data-driven approach towards chemically accurate density functional theory

We propose a general machine learning-based framework for building an accurate and widely-applicable energy functional within the framework of generalized Kohn-Sham density functional theory. To this end, we develop a way of training self-consistent models that are capable of taking large datasets from different systems and different kinds of labels. We demonstrate that the functional that results from this training procedure gives chemically accurate predictions on energy, force, dipole, and electron density for a large class of molecules. It can be continuously improved when more and more data are available.
