Equivariant Variance Estimation for Multiple Change-point Model

The variance of noise plays an important role in many change-point detection procedures and the associated inferences. Most commonly used variance estimators require strong assumptions on the true mean structure or normality of the error distribution, which may not hold in applications. More importantly, the qualities of these estimators have not been discussed systematically in the literature. In this paper, we introduce a framework of equivariant variance estimation for multiple change-point models. In particular, we characterize the set of all equivariant unbiased quadratic variance estimators for a family of change-point model classes, and develop a minimax theory for such estimators.

SPHINX: The Joint Mixing of Weights, Tasks, and Visual Embeddings for Multi-modal Large Language Models

We present SPHINX, a versatile multi-modal large language model (MLLM) with a joint mixing of model weights, tuning tasks, and visual embeddings. First, for stronger vision-language alignment, we unfreeze the large language model (LLM) during pre-training, and introduce a weight mix strategy between LLMs trained by real-world and synthetic data. By directly integrating the weights from two domains, the mixed LLM can efficiently incorporate diverse semantics with favorable robustness. Then, to enable multi-purpose capabilities, we mix a variety of tasks for joint visual instruction tuning, and design task-specific instructions to avoid inter-task conflict. In addition to the basic visual question answering, we include more challenging tasks such as region-level understanding, caption grounding, document layout detection, and human pose estimation, contributing to mutual enhancement over different scenarios. Additionally, we propose to extract comprehensive visual embeddings from various network architectures, pre-training paradigms, and information granularity, providing language models with more robust image representations. Based on our proposed joint mixing, SPHINX exhibits superior multi-modal understanding capabilities on a wide range of applications. On top of this, we further propose an efficient strategy aiming to better capture fine-grained appearances of high-resolution images. With a mixing of different scales and high-resolution sub-images, SPHINX attains exceptional visual parsing and reasoning performance on existing evaluation benchmarks. We hope our work may cast a light on the exploration of joint mixing in future MLLM research. Code is released at https://github.com/Alpha-VLLM/LLaMA2-Accessory.

Knowledge-driven Meta-learning for CSI Feedback

Accurate and effective channel state information (CSI) feedback is a key technology for massive multiple-input and multiple-output systems. Recently, deep learning (DL) has been introduced for CSI feedback enhancement through massive collected training data and lengthy training time, which is quite costly and impractical for realistic deployment. In this article, a knowledge-driven meta-learning approach is proposed, where the DL model initialized by the meta model obtained from meta training phase is able to achieve rapid convergence when facing a new scenario during target retraining phase. Specifically, instead of training with massive data collected from various scenarios, the meta task environment is constructed based on the intrinsic knowledge of spatial-frequency characteristics of CSI for meta training. Moreover, the target task dataset is also augmented by exploiting the knowledge of statistical characteristics of wireless channel, so that the DL model can achieve higher performance with small actually collected dataset and short training time. In addition, we provide analyses of rationale for the improvement yielded by the knowledge in both phases. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach from the perspective of feedback performance and convergence speed.

Jina Embeddings: A Novel Set of High-Performance Sentence Embedding Models

Jina Embeddings constitutes a set of high-performance sentence embedding models adept at translating textual inputs into numerical representations, capturing the semantics of the text. These models excel in applications like dense retrieval and semantic textual similarity. This paper details the development of Jina Embeddings, starting with the creation of high-quality pairwise and triplet datasets. It underlines the crucial role of data cleaning in dataset preparation, offers in-depth insights into the model training process, and concludes with a comprehensive performance evaluation using the Massive Text Embedding Benchmark (MTEB). Furthermore, to increase the model's awareness of grammatical negation, we construct a novel training and evaluation dataset of negated and non-negated statements, which we make publicly available to the community.

Wannier-Stark localization in one-dimensional amplitude-chirped lattices

We study the Wannier-Stark (WS) localization in one-dimensional amplitude-chirped lattices with the $j$th onsite potential modulated by a function $Fj\cos(2παj)$, where $F$ is the external field with a period determined by $α=p/q$ ($p$ and $q$ are coprime integers). In the Hermitian (or non-Hermitian) systems with real (or imaginary) fields, we can obtain real (or imaginary) WS ladders in the eigenenergy spectrum. In most cases with $q \geq 2$, there are multiple WS ladders with all the eigenstates localized in the strong field limit. However, in the lattices with $q=4$, the energy-dependent localization phenomenon emerges due to the presence of both spatially periodic and linearly increasing behaviors in the onsite potential. About half the number of eigenstates are gathered at the band center and can extend over a wide region or even the full range of the lattice, even when the field becomes very strong. Moreover, in the non-Hermitian lattices with odd $q$, some of the WS ladders become doubly degenerate, where the eigenstates are evenly distributed at two neighboring sites in a wide regime of field strength. Our work opens an avenue for exploring WS localization in both Hermitian and non-Hermitian amplitude-chirped lattices.

ImageBind-LLM: Multi-modality Instruction Tuning

We present ImageBind-LLM, a multi-modality instruction tuning method of large language models (LLMs) via ImageBind. Existing works mainly focus on language and image instruction tuning, different from which, our ImageBind-LLM can respond to multi-modality conditions, including audio, 3D point clouds, video, and their embedding-space arithmetic by only image-text alignment training. During training, we adopt a learnable bind network to align the embedding space between LLaMA and ImageBind's image encoder. Then, the image features transformed by the bind network are added to word tokens of all layers in LLaMA, which progressively injects visual instructions via an attention-free and zero-initialized gating mechanism. Aided by the joint embedding of ImageBind, the simple image-text training enables our model to exhibit superior multi-modality instruction-following capabilities. During inference, the multi-modality inputs are fed into the corresponding ImageBind encoders, and processed by a proposed visual cache model for further cross-modal embedding enhancement. The training-free cache model retrieves from three million image features extracted by ImageBind, which effectively mitigates the training-inference modality discrepancy. Notably, with our approach, ImageBind-LLM can respond to instructions of diverse modalities and demonstrate significant language generation quality. STAR-RIS Aided Covert Communication

This paper investigates the multi-antenna covert communications assisted by a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS). In particular, to shelter the existence of communications between transmitter and receiver from a warden, a friendly full-duplex receiver with two antennas is leveraged to make contributions to confuse the warden. Considering the worst case, the closed-form expression of the minimum detection error probability (DEP) at the warden is derived and utilized as a covert constraint. Then, we formulate an optimization problem maximizing the covert rate of the system under the covertness constraint and quality of service (QoS) constraint with communication outage analysis. To jointly design the active and passive beamforming of the transmitter and STAR-RIS, an iterative algorithm based on globally convergent version of method of moving asymptotes (GCMMA) is proposed to effectively solve the non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results show that the proposed STAR-RIS-assisted scheme highly outperforms the case with conventional RIS.

STAR-RIS Enhanced Joint Physical Layer Security and Covert Communications for Multi-antenna mmWave Systems

This paper investigates the utilization of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) in supporting joint physical layer security (PLS) and covert communications (CCs) in a multi-antenna millimeter wave (mmWave) system, where the base station (BS) communicates with both covert and security users while defeating eavesdropping by wardens with the help of a STAR-RIS. Specifically, analytical derivations are performed to obtain the closed-form expression of warden's minimum detection error probability (DEP). Furthermore, the asymptotic result of the minimum DEP and the lower bound of the secure rates are derived, considering the practical assumption that BS only knows the statistical channel state information (CSI) between STAR-RIS and the wardens. Subsequently, an optimization problem is formulated with the aim of maximizing the average sum of the covert rate and the minimum secure rate while ensuring the covert requirement and quality of service (QoS) for legal users by jointly optimizing the active and passive beamformers. Due to the strong coupling among variables, an iterative algorithm based on the alternating strategy and the semi-definite relaxation (SDR) method is proposed to solve the non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results indicate that the performance of the proposed STAR-RIS-assisted scheme greatly surpasses that of the conventional RIS scheme, which validates the superiority of STAR-RIS in simultaneously implementing PLS and CCs.

STAR-RIS Assisted Covert Communications in NOMA Systems

Covert communications assisted by simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems have been explored in this paper. In particular, the access point (AP) transmitter adopts NOMA to serve a downlink covert user and a public user. The minimum detection error probability (DEP) at the warden is derived considering the uncertainty of its background noise, which is used as a covertness constraint. We aim at maximizing the covert rate of the system by jointly optimizing APs transmit power and passive beamforming of STAR-RIS, under the covertness and quality of service (QoS) constraints. An iterative algorithm is proposed to effectively solve the non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms the conventional RIS-based scheme in ensuring system covert performance.

G-Adapter: Towards Structure-Aware Parameter-Efficient Transfer Learning for Graph Transformer Networks

It has become a popular paradigm to transfer the knowledge of large-scale pre-trained models to various downstream tasks via fine-tuning the entire model parameters. However, with the growth of model scale and the rising number of downstream tasks, this paradigm inevitably meets the challenges in terms of computation consumption and memory footprint issues. Recently, Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) (e.g., Adapter, LoRA, BitFit) shows a promising paradigm to alleviate these concerns by updating only a portion of parameters. Despite these PEFTs having demonstrated satisfactory performance in natural language processing, it remains under-explored for the question of whether these techniques could be transferred to graph-based tasks with Graph Transformer Networks (GTNs). Therefore, in this paper, we fill this gap by providing extensive benchmarks with traditional PEFTs on a range of graph-based downstream tasks. Our empirical study shows that it is sub-optimal to directly transfer existing PEFTs to graph-based tasks due to the issue of feature distribution shift. To address this issue, we propose a novel structure-aware PEFT approach, named G-Adapter, which leverages graph convolution operation to introduce graph structure (e.g., graph adjacent matrix) as an inductive bias to guide the updating process. Besides, we propose Bregman proximal point optimization to further alleviate feature distribution shift by preventing the model from aggressive update. Extensive experiments demonstrate that G-Adapter obtains the state-of-the-art performance compared to the counterparts on nine graph benchmark datasets based on two pre-trained GTNs, and delivers tremendous memory footprint efficiency compared to the conventional paradigm.

HiFi: High-Information Attention Heads Hold for Parameter-Efficient Model Adaptation

To fully leverage the advantages of large-scale pre-trained language models (PLMs) on downstream tasks, it has become a ubiquitous adaptation paradigm to fine-tune the entire parameters of PLMs. However, this paradigm poses issues of inefficient updating and resource over-consuming for fine-tuning in data-scarce and resource-limited scenarios, because of the large scale of parameters in PLMs. To alleviate these concerns, in this paper, we propose a parameter-efficient fine-tuning method HiFi, that is, only the highly informative and strongly correlated attention heads for the specific task are fine-tuned. To search for those significant attention heads, we develop a novel framework to analyze the effectiveness of heads. Specifically, we first model the relationship between heads into a graph from two perspectives of information richness and correlation, and then apply PageRank algorithm to determine the relative importance of each head. Extensive experiments on the GLUE benchmark demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, and show that HiFi obtains state-of-the-art performance over the prior baselines.

Simultaneously Transmitting and Reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) Assisted Multi-Antenna Covert Communications: Analysis and Optimization

This paper investigates the multi-antenna covert communications assisted by a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS). In particular, to shelter the existence of covert communications between a multi-antenna transmitter and a single-antenna receiver from a warden, a friendly full-duplex receiver with two antennas is leveraged to make contributions where one antenna is responsible for receiving the transmitted signals and the other one transmits the jamming signals with a varying power to confuse the warden. Considering the worst case, the closed-form expression of the minimum detection error probability (DEP) at the warden is derived and utilized in a covert constraint to guarantee the system performance. Then, we formulate an optimization problem maximizing the covert rate of the system under the covertness constraint and quality of service (QoS) constraint with communication outage analysis. To jointly design the active and passive beamforming of the transmitter and STAR-RIS, an iterative algorithm based on semi-definite relaxation (SDR) method and Dinkelbachs algorithm is proposed to effectively solve the non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results show that the proposed STAR-RIS-assisted scheme highly outperforms the case with conventional RIS, which validates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm as well as the superiority of STAR-RIS in guaranteeing the covertness of wireless communications.

Learning Accurate Performance Predictors for Ultrafast Automated Model Compression

In this paper, we propose an ultrafast automated model compression framework called SeerNet for flexible network deployment. Conventional non-differen-tiable methods discretely search the desirable compression policy based on the accuracy from exhaustively trained lightweight models, and existing differentiable methods optimize an extremely large supernet to obtain the required compressed model for deployment. They both cause heavy computational cost due to the complex compression policy search and evaluation process. On the contrary, we obtain the optimal efficient networks by directly optimizing the compression policy with an accurate performance predictor, where the ultrafast automated model compression for various computational cost constraint is achieved without complex compression policy search and evaluation. Specifically, we first train the performance predictor based on the accuracy from uncertain compression policies actively selected by efficient evolutionary search, so that informative supervision is provided to learn the accurate performance predictor with acceptable cost. Then we leverage the gradient that maximizes the predicted performance under the barrier complexity constraint for ultrafast acquisition of the desirable compression policy, where adaptive update stepsizes with momentum are employed to enhance optimality of the acquired pruning and quantization strategy. Compared with the state-of-the-art automated model compression methods, experimental results on image classification and object detection show that our method achieves competitive accuracy-complexity trade-offs with significant reduction of the search cost.

A Knowledge-Driven Meta-Learning Method for CSI Feedback

Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach from the perspective of feedback performance and convergence speed.

Token-Label Alignment for Vision Transformers

Data mixing strategies (e.g., CutMix) have shown the ability to greatly improve the performance of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). They mix two images as inputs for training and assign them with a mixed label with the same ratio. While they are shown effective for vision transformers (ViTs), we identify a token fluctuation phenomenon that has suppressed the potential of data mixing strategies. We empirically observe that the contributions of input tokens fluctuate as forward propagating, which might induce a different mixing ratio in the output tokens. The training target computed by the original data mixing strategy can thus be inaccurate, resulting in less effective training. To address this, we propose a token-label alignment (TL-Align) method to trace the correspondence between transformed tokens and the original tokens to maintain a label for each token. We reuse the computed attention at each layer for efficient token-label alignment, introducing only negligible additional training costs. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method improves the performance of ViTs on image classification, semantic segmentation, objective detection, and transfer learning tasks. Code is available at: https://github.com/Euphoria16/TL-Align.

Concise and interpretable multi-label rule sets

Multi-label classification is becoming increasingly ubiquitous, but not much attention has been paid to interpretability. In this paper, we develop a multi-label classifier that can be represented as a concise set of simple "if-then" rules, and thus, it offers better interpretability compared to black-box models. Notably, our method is able to find a small set of relevant patterns that lead to accurate multi-label classification, while existing rule-based classifiers are myopic and wasteful in searching rules, requiring a large number of rules to achieve high accuracy. In particular, we formulate the problem of choosing multi-label rules to maximize a target function, which considers not only discrimination ability with respect to labels, but also diversity. Accounting for diversity helps to avoid redundancy, and thus, to control the number of rules in the solution set. To tackle the said maximization problem we propose a 2-approximation algorithm, which relies on a novel technique to sample high-quality rules. In addition to our theoretical analysis, we provide a thorough experimental evaluation, which indicates that our approach offers a trade-off between predictive performance and interpretability that is unmatched in previous work.

Concentrated subradiant modes in one-dimensional atomic array coupled with chiral waveguides

Non-Hermitian systems have recently attracted broad interest and exhibited intriguing physical phenomena, in which the non-Hermitian skin effect is one of the most remarkable quantum phenomena desiring detailed investigations and has been widely studied in various fermionic and bosonic systems. Here we propose a non-Hermitian atom-waveguide system composed of a tilted one-dimensional atomic array coupled with two identical waveguides with opposite chiralities. Such system creates an effective lattice model including nonreciprocal long-range hoppings through the chiral-waveguide photon-mediated interactions. We find the excitation of the collective atomic states concentrates in the middle interface, pointing towards the non-Hermitian skin effect associated with subradiant modes, while, on the contrary, superradiant modes exhibit extended features. Simulation results present subradiant funneling effect, with robustness against small atomic position disorders. Our work underpins the fundamental comprehension towards the non-Hermitian skin effect in open quantum systems and also provide prospective paths to study non-Hermitian systems in the area of quantum optics.

On the Population Monotonicity of Independent Set Games

An independent set game is a cooperative game defined on graphs and dealing with profit-sharing in maximum independent set problems. A population monotonic allocation scheme is a rule specifying how to share the profit of each coalition among its participants such that every participant is better off when the coalition expands. In this paper, we provide a necessary and sufficient characterization for population monotonic allocation schemes in independent set games. Moreover, our characterization can be verified efficiently.
