Ulrich bundles on intersections of two quadrics

We construct Ulrich bundles on smooth intersections of two quadrics. We determine all possible ranks and prove the existence of indecomposable Ulrich bundles of every allowable rank. To our knowledge, this gives the first such construction for a family of nonhomogeneous varieties of arbitrarily large dimension. We also study the moduli spaces of these bundles and relate them to moduli spaces of vector bundles on curves. For intersections of two even-dimensional quadrics, our results prove a conjecture of Eisenbud and Schreyer.

Cluster algebras and skein algebras for surfaces

We consider two algebras of curves associated to an oriented surface of finite type - the cluster algebra from combinatorial algebra, and the skein algebra from quantum topology. We focus on generalizations of cluster algebras and generalizations of skein algebras that include arcs whose endpoints are marked points on the boundary or in the interior of the surface. We show that the generalizations are closely related by maps that can be explicitly defined, and we explore the structural implications, including (non-)finite generation. We also discuss open questions about the algebraic structure of the algebras.

Center of generalized skein algebras

We consider a generalization of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of a surface that is generated by loops and arcs between marked points on the interior or boundary, up to skein relations defined by Muller and Roger-Yang. We compute the center of this Muller-Roger-Yang skein algebra and show that it is almost Azumaya when the quantum parameter $q$ is a primitive $n$-th root of unity with odd $n$. We also discuss the implications on the representation theory of the Muller-Roger-Yang generalized skein algebra.

Derived categories of symmetric products and moduli spaces of vector bundles on a curve

We show that the derived categories of symmetric products of a curve are embedded into the derived categories of the moduli spaces of vector bundles of large ranks on the curve. It supports a prediction of the existence of a semiorthogonal decomposition of the derived category of the moduli space, expected by a motivic computation. As an application, we show that all Jacobian varieties, symmetric products of curves and all principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension at most three, are Fano visitors. We also obtain similar results for motives.

On algebraic space filling curves

Poonen and Gabber independently showed that any smooth geometrically irreducible projective scheme over a finite field has a smooth space filling curve, that is, a smooth curve defined over the field and passes through all points over the field. However, except the case of projective plane, no concrete example was found in literature. In this note, we construct explicit examples of algebraic space filling curves in three dimensional projective space, in particular the ones with minimum degree.

Distribution of the number of zeros of polynomials over a finite field

We study the probability distribution of the number of zeros of multivariable polynomials with bounded degree over a finite field. We find the probability generating function for each set of bounded degree polynomials. In particular, in the single variable case, we show that as the degree of the polynomials and the order of the field simultaneously approach infinity, the distribution converges to a Poisson distribution.

Computation of GIT quotients of semisimple groups

We describe three algorithms to determine the stable, semistable, and torus-polystable loci of the GIT quotient of a projective variety by a reductive group. The algorithms are efficient when the group is semisimple. By using an implementation of our algorithms for simple groups, we provide several applications to the moduli theory of algebraic varieties, including the K-moduli of algebraic varieties, the moduli of algebraic curves and the Mukai models of the moduli space of curves for low genus. We also discuss a number of potential improvements and some natural open problems arising from this work.

Determinantal varieties from point configurations on hypersurfaces

We consider the scheme $X_{r,d,n}$ parametrizing $n$ ordered points in projective space $\mathbb{P}^r$ that lie on a common hypersurface of degree $d$. We show that this scheme has a determinantal structure and we prove that it is irreducible, Cohen-Macaulay, and normal. Moreover, we give an algebraic and geometric description of the singular locus of $X_{r,d,n}$ in terms of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and $d$-normality. This yields a characterization of the singular locus of $X_{2,d,n}$ and $X_{3,2,n}$.

Derived category and ACM bundles of moduli space of vector bundles on a curve

We show that the derived category of a curve is embedded into the derived category of the moduli space of vector bundles on the curve of coprime rank and degree. We also generalize the semiorthogonal decomposition constructed by Narasimhan and Belmans-Mukhopadhyay. Finally, we produce a one-dimensional family of ACM bundles over the moduli space.

Consequences of the compatibility of skein algebra and cluster algebra on surfaces

We investigate two algebra of curves on a topological surface with punctures - the cluster algebra of surfaces defined by Fomin, Shapiro, and Thurston, and the generalized skein algebra constructed by Roger and Yang. By establishing their compatibility, we resolve Roger-Yang's conjecture on the deformation quantization of the decorated Teichmuller space. We also obtain several structural results on the cluster algebra of surfaces. The cluster algebra of a positive genus surface is not finitely generated, and it differs from its upper cluster algebra.

Positivity of the Poincar\'e bundle on the moduli space of vector bundles and its applications

We prove that the normalized Poincar\'e bundle on the moduli space of stable rank $r$ vector bundles with a fixed determinant on a smooth projective curve $X$ induces a family of nef vector bundles on the moduli space. Two applications follow. We show that when the genus of $X$ is large, the derived category of $X$ is embedded into the derived category of the moduli space for arbitrary rank and coprime degree, which extends the results of Narasimhan, Fonarev-Kuznetsov, and Belmans-Mukhopadhyay. As the second application, we construct a family of ACM bundles on the moduli space. A key ingredient of our proof is the investigation of birational geometry of the moduli spaces of parabolic bundles.

Presentations of the Roger-Yang generalized skein algebra

We describe presentations of the Roger-Yang generalized skein algebras for punctured spheres with an arbitrary number of punctures. This skein algebra is a quantization of the decorated Teichmuller space and generalizes the construction of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra. In this paper, we also obtain a new interpretation of the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian of planes in terms of skein theory.

Point configurations, phylogenetic trees, and dissimilarity vectors

In 2004 Pachter and Speyer introduced the higher dissimilarity maps for phylogenetic trees and asked two important questions about their relation to the tropical Grassmannian. Multiple authors, using independent methods, answered affirmatively the first of these questions, showing that dissimilarity vectors lie on the tropical Grassmannian, but the second question, whether the set of dissimilarity vectors forms a tropical subvariety, remained opened. We resolve this question by showing that the tropical balancing condition fails. However, by replacing the definition of the dissimilarity map with a weighted variant, we show that weighted dissimilarity vectors form a tropical subvariety of the tropical Grassmannian in exactly the way that Pachter--Speyer envisioned. Moreover, we provide a geometric interpretation in terms of configurations of points on rational normal curves and construct a finite tropical basis that yields an explicit characterization of weighted dissimilarity vectors.

The Roger-Yang skein algebra and the decorated Teichmuller space

Based on hyperbolic geometric considerations, Roger and Yang introduced an extension of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra that includes arcs. In particular, their skein algebra is a deformation quantization of a certain commutative curve algebra, and there is a Poisson algebra homomorphism between the curve algebra and the algebra of smooth functions on decorated Teichmuller space. In this paper, we consider surfaces with punctures which is not the 3-holed sphere and which have an ideal triangulation without self-folded edges or triangles. For those surfaces, we prove that Roger and Yang's Poisson algebra homomorphism is injective, and the skein algebra they defined have no zero divisors. A section about generalized corner coordinates for normal arcs may be of independent interest.

Finite generation of the algebra of type A conformal blocks via birational geometry II: higher genus

We prove finite generation of the algebra of type A conformal blocks over arbitrary stable curves of any genus. As an application we construct a flat family of irreducible normal projective varieties over the moduli stack of stable pointed curves, whose fiber over a smooth curve is a moduli space of semistable parabolic bundles. This generalizes a construction of a degeneration of the moduli space of vector bundles presented in a recent work of Belkale and Gibney.

KSBA compactification of the moduli space of K3 surfaces with purely non-symplectic automorphism of order four

We describe a compactification by KSBA stable pairs of the five-dimensional moduli space of K3 surfaces with purely non-symplectic automorphism of order four and $U(2)\oplus D_4^{\oplus2}$ lattice polarization. These K3 surfaces can be realized as the minimal resolution of the double cover of $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ branched along a specific $(4,4)$ curve. We show that, up to a finite group action, this stable pair compactification is isomorphic to Kirwan's partial desingularization of the GIT quotient $(\mathbb{P}^1)^8//\mathrm{SL}_2$ with the symmetric linearization.

Equations for point configurations to lie on a rational normal curve

The parameter space of $n$ ordered points in projective $d$-space that lie on a rational normal curve admits a natural compactification by taking the Zariski closure in $(\mathbb{P}^d)^n$. The resulting variety was used to study the birational geometry of the moduli space $\overline{\mathrm{M}}_{0,n}$ of $n$-tuples of points in $\mathbb{P}^1$. In this paper we turn to a more classical question, first asked independently by both Speyer and Sturmfels: what are the defining equations? For conics, namely $d=2$, we find scheme-theoretic equations revealing a determinantal structure and use this to prove some geometric properties; moreover, determining which subsets of these equations suffice set-theoretically is equivalent to a well-studied combinatorial problem. For twisted cubics, $d=3$, we use the Gale transform to produce equations defining the union of two irreducible components, the compactified configuration space we want and the locus of degenerate point configurations, and we explain the challenges involved in eliminating this extra component. For $d \ge 4$ we conjecture a similar situation and prove partial results in this direction.
