Anomalous non-Hermitian skin effect: the topological inequivalence of skin modes versus point gap

Non-Hermitian skin effect, the localization of an extensive number of eigenstates at the ends of the system, has greatly expanded the frontier of physical laws. It has long been believed that the present of skin modes is equivalent to the topologically nontrivial point gap of complex eigenvalues under periodic boundary conditions, and vice versa. However, we find that this concomitance can be broken, i.e., the skin modes can be present or absent whereas the point gap is topologically trivial or nontrivial, respectively, named anomalous non-Hermitian skin effect. This anomalous phenomenon arises when the unidirectional hopping amplitudes leading to the decoupling-like behaviors among subsystems are emergence. The emergence of the anomalous non-Hermitian skin effect is accompanied by the mutations of the open boundary energy spectrum, whose structure exhibits the multifold exceptional point and can not be recovered by continuum bands. Moreover, an experimental setup using circuits is proposed to simulate this novel quantum effect. Our results reveal the topologically inequivalent between skin modes and point gap. This new effect not only can give a deeper understanding of non-Bloch theory and the critical phenomenon in non-Hermitian systems, but may also inspire new applications such as in the sensors field.

Emergent Quasiperiodicity from Polariton-phonon Hybrid Excitations in Waveguide Quantum Optomechanics

We investigate polariton-phonon hybrid excitations, which describe the collective excitations of emitter-photon polaritons and vibrational phonons, in a periodic array of vibrating two-level emitters interacting with waveguide photons. We demonstrate the emergence of an interaction-induced quasiperiodic structure caused by the interplay between phonon scatterings and waveguide-mediated long-range couplings. This quasiperiodicity fundamentally changes the excitation characteristics in the subradiant regime, which feature an appearance of topological edge states and a transition between ergodic and multifractal excitations. A possible realization consisting of an array of laser-cooled atoms trapped near an optical nanofiber is also proposed. Our results demonstrate the possibility of utilizing vibrations as a novel degree of freedom in the exploration of many-body physics with waveguide quantum electrodynamics systems.

Quantum speedup dynamics process in Schwarzschild space-time

Quantum speed limit time (QSLT) can be used to characterize the intrinsic minimal time interval for a quantum system evolving from an initial state to a target state. We investigate the QSLT of the open system in Schwarzschild space-time. We show that, in some typical noisy channels, the Hawking effect can be beneficial to the evolution of the system. For an initial entangled state, the evolution speed of the system can be enhanced in the depolarizing, bit flip, and bit-phase flip channels as the Hawking temperature increases, which are in sharp contrast to the phase flip channel. Moreover, the optimal initial entanglement exists in other noise channels except the phase flip channel, which minimizes the QSLT of the system and thus leads to the maximum evolution speed of the system.

Finite-system Multicriticality at the Superradiant Quantum Phase Transition

We demonstrate the existence of finite-system multicriticality in a qubit-boson model where biased qubits collectively coupled to a single-mode bosonic field. The interplay between biases and boson-qubit coupling produces a rich phase diagram showing multiple superradiant phases and phase boundaries of different orders. In particular, multiple phases can become indistinguishable in appropriate bias configurations, which is the signature of multicriticality. A series of universality classes characterizing these multicritical points are identified. Moreover, we present a trapped-ion realization with the potential to explore the multicritical phenomena experimentally using a small number of ions. The results open a novel way to probe multicritical universality classes in experiments.

Universal Dissipationless Dynamics in Gaussian Continuous-variable Open Systems

We investigate the universal dissipationless dynamics of Gaussian continuous-variable systems in the presence of a band-gapped bosonic environment. Our results show that environmental band gaps can induce localized modes, which give rise to the dissipationless dynamics where the system behaves as free oscillators instead of experiencing a full decay in the long time limit. We present a complete characterization of localized modes, and show the existence of the critical system-environment coupling. Beyond the critical values, localized modes can be produced and the system dynamics become dissipationless. This novel dynamics can be utilized to overcome the environmental noises and protect the quantum resources in the continuous-variable quantum information.

The effects of different quantum feedback operator types on the parameter precision of detection efficiency in optimal quantum estimation

The effects of different quantum feedback types on the estimation precision of the detection efficiency are studied. It is found that the precision can be more effective enhanced by a certain feedback type through comparing these feedbacks and the precision has a positive relation with detection efficiency for the optimal feedback when the system reach the state of dynamic balance. In addition, the bigger the proportion of is the higher the precision is and we will not obtain any information about the parameter to be estimated if is chosen as initial state for the feedback type λσ_z.
