A peak in the critical current for quantum critical superconductors

Generally, studies of the critical current Ic are necessary if superconductors are to be of practical use because Ic sets the current limit below which there is a zero-resistance state. Here, we report a peak in the pressure dependence of the zero-field Ic, Ic(0), at a hidden quantum critical point (QCP), where a continuous antiferromagnetic transition temperature is suppressed by pressure toward 0 K in CeRhIn5 and 4.4% Sn-doped CeRhIn5. The Ic(0)s of these Ce-based compounds under pressure exhibit a universal temperature dependence, underlining that the peak in zero-field Ic(P) is determined predominantly by critical fluctuations associated with the hidden QCP. The dc conductivity is a minimum at the QCP, showing anti-correlation with Ic(0). These discoveries demonstrate that a quantum critical point hidden inside the superconducting phase in strongly correlated materials can be exposed by the zero-field Ic, therefore providing a direct link between a QCP and unconventional superconductivity.

The quartet ground state in CeB$_6$: an inelastic x-ray scattering study

We investigated the ground state symmetry of the cubic hidden order compound CeB$_6$ by means of core level non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS). The information is obtained from the directional dependence of the scattering function that arises from higher than dipole transitions. Our new method confirms that the ground state is well described using a localized crystal-field model assuming a $Γ_8$ quartet ground state.

Correlation and disorder-enhanced nematic spin response in superconductors with weakly broken rotational symmetry

Recent experimental and theoretical studies have highlighted the possible role of a electronic nematic liquid in underdoped cuprate superconductors. We calculate, within a model of d-wave superconductor with Hubbard correlations, the spin susceptibility in the case of a small explicitly broken rotational symmetry of the underlying lattice. We then exhibit how the induced spin response asymmetry is strongly enhanced by correlations as one approaches the instability to stripe order. In the disorder-induced stripe phase, impurities become spin nematogens with a C_2 symmetric impurity resonance state, and the disorder-averaged spin susceptibility remains only C_2 symmetric at low energies, similar to recent data from neutron scattering experiments on underdoped YBCO.

Thermal and magnetic properties of a low-temperature antiferromagnet Ce$_4$Pt$_{12}$Sn$_{25}$

We report specific heat ($C$) and magnetization ($M$) of single crystalline Ce$_4$Pt$_{12}$Sn$_{25}$ at temperature down to $\sim$50mK and in fields up to 3T. $C/T$ exhibits a sharp anomaly at 180mK, with a large $ΔC/T\sim$30J/molK$^2$-Ce, which, together with the corresponding cusp-like magnetization anomaly, indicates an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state with a Néel temperature $T_N$=180mK. Numerical calculations based on a Heisenberg model reproduce both zero-field $C$ and $M$ data, thus placing Ce$_4$Pt$_{12}$Sn$_{25}$ in the weak exchange coupling $J<J_c$ limit of the Doniach diagram, with a very small Kondo scale $T_K\ll T_N$. Magnetic field suppresses the AFM state at $H^*\approx$0.7T, much more effectively than expected from the Heisenberg model, indicating additional effects possibly due to frustration or residual Kondo screening.

Magnetic, electronic and Shubnikov-de Haas investigation of the dense Kondo system CeAgSb2

Of the dense Kondo materials in the class CeTSb2 (where T = Au, Ag, Ni, Cu, or Pd), CeAgSb2 is special due to its complex magnetic ground state, which exhibits both ferro- and anti-ferromagnetic character below an ordering temperature TO ~ 9.8 K. To further elucidate a description this magnetic ground state, we have carried out a systematic study of single crystalline CeAgSb2 by magnetic, electrical magneto-transport, and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) studies over a broad range of temperature and magnetic field. We have constructed the magnetic phase diagram based solely on magnetoresistance data. Here, depending on the orientation of the magnetic field H, either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic ordering occurs below TO. The resistivity of this compound below TO does not follow a simple Fermi liquid behavior, but requires an additional contribution from conduction electron scattering from boson excitations with an energy gap, D. At zero field the temperature dependent resistivity below TO is most consistent with antiferromagnetic order, based on the transport theory which includes magnon scattering. Crystal field effect theory applied to the susceptibility data yields splitting energies from the ground state to the first and second excited states of 53 K and 137 K, respectively. Although there is some uncertainty in the Kondo temperature determination, we estimate TK ~ 23 K from our analysis. In the Fermi surface studies, the measurements show very small Fermi surface sections, not predicted by band structure calculations, and the SdH amplitudes are very sensitive to field direction. Only by considering lens orbits between the main Fermi surface cylinders can the SdH results be reconciled with the Fermi surface topology predicted from band structure.

Korringa ratio of ferromagnetically correlated impure metals

The Korringa ratio, $\cal K$, obtained by taking an appropriate combination of the Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time, is calculated at finite temperature, $T$, in the three-dimensional electron gas model, including the electron-electron interaction, $U$, and non-magnetic impurity scatterings. $\cal K$ varies in a simple way with respect to $U$ and $T$; it decreases as $U$ is increased but increases as $T$ is raised. However, $\cal K$ varies in a slightly more complicated way with respect to the impurity scatterings; as the scattering rate is increased, $\cal K$ increases for small $U$ and low $T$, but decreases for large $U$ or high $T$ regime. This calls for a more careful analysis when one attempts to estimate the Stoner factor from $\cal K$.
