Interaction-driven Roton Condensation in C = 2/3 Fractional Quantum Anomalous Hall State

The interplay of topological order and charge order exhibits rich physics. Recent experiments that succesfully realized the frational quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) effect in twisted MoTe$_2$ bilayers and rhombohedral multilayer graphene without external magnetic field further call for deeper understanding of the relation between topological order and charge order in quantum moiré materials. In the archetypal correlated flat-band model on checkerboard lattice, a FQAH smectic state with coexistent topological order and smectic charge order has been numerically discovered at filling $ν$ = 2/3. In this work, we explore the global ground-state phase diagram of the model with competing interactions and find a C = 2/3 FQAH phase surrounded by four different charge density wave (CDW) phases. In particular, we identify a FQAH-CDW transition triggered by roton condensation, in that, the minimal roton gap continues to decrease at the same finite momentum, along with the diverging density flucuations at the transition point, after which the system enters into a CDW metal phase with the same ordered wavevector. Our discovery points out that the charge-neutral roton modes can play a significant role in a transition from FQAH topological order to CDW symmetry-breaking order, discussed in FQH literature while severely neglected in FQAH systems.

Haldane phases and phase diagrams of the S = 3/2, 1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the orthogonal dimer chain

We systematically study the effects of higher-order interactions on the S = 3/2, 1 orthogonal dimer chains using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group. Due to frustration and higher spin, there are rich quantum phases, including three Haldane phases, two gapless phases and several magnetically ordered phases. To characterize these phases and their phase transitions, we study various physical quantities such as energy gap, energy level crossing, fidelity susceptibility, spin correlation, entanglement spectrum and central charge. According to our calculations, the biquadratic term can enhance the Haldane phase regions. In particular, we numerically identify that a Haldane phase in S = 3/2 case is adiabatically connected to the exact AKLT point when adding bicubic term. Our study on the orthogonal dimer model, which is a 1D version of Shastry-Sutherland model, provides insights into understanding the possible S = 3/2, 1 Haldane phases in quasi-1D and 2D frustrated magnetic materials.

Characterizing Random-singlet State in Two-dimensional Frustrated Quantum Magnets and Implications for the Double Perovskite Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$O$_6$

Motivated by experimental observation of the non-magnetic phase in the compounds with frustration and disorder, we study the ground state of the spin-$1/2$ square-lattice Heisenberg model with randomly distributed nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ couplings. By using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation on cylinder system with circumference up to $10$ lattice sites, we identify a disordered phase between the Néel and stripe magnetic phase with growing $J_2 / J_1$ in the presence of strong bond randomness. The vanished spin-freezing parameter indicates the absence of spin glass order. The large-scale DMRG results unveil the size-scaling behaviors of the spin-freezing parameter, the power-law decay of the average spin correlation, and the exponential decay of the typical spin correlation, which all agree with the corresponding behavior in the one-dimensional random singlet (RS) state and characterize the RS nature of this disordered phase. The DMRG simulation also provides insights and opportunities for characterizing a class of non-magnetic states in two-dimensional frustrated magnets with disorder. We also compare with existing experiments and suggest more measurements for understanding the spin-liquid-like behaviors in the double perovskite Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$O$_6$.

Phase diagram and magnetic excitations of $J_1$-$J_3$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice

We study the phase diagram and the dynamical spin structure factor of the spin-1/2 J1-J3 Heisenberg model on the square lattice using density matrix renormalization group, exact diagonalization (ED), and cluster perturbation theory (CPT). By extrapolating the order parameters and studying the level crossings of the low-lying energy and entanglement spectra, we obtain the phase diagram of this model and identify a narrow region of quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase followed by a plaquette valence-bond solid (PVBS) state in the intermediate region, whose nature has been controversial for many years. More importantly, we use CPT and ED to study the dynamical spin structure factor in the QSL and the PVBS phase. In the QSL phase, the high-energy magnon mode completely turns into some dispersive weak excitations around the X and M points. For the PVBS phase, the low-energy spectrum is characterized by a gapped triplet excitation, and at the high energy, we find another branch of dispersive excitation with broad continua, which is unlike the plaquette phase in the 2x2 checkerboard model. In the latter case, the second branch of excitation is nearly flat due to the weak effective interactions between the local excitations of the plaquettes. And in the J1-J3 Heisenberg model, the uniform interactions and the spontaneously translational symmetry breaking of the PVBS phase make the difference in the excitation spectra.

Ground States and Dynamical Properties of $S>1/2$ Quantum Heisenberg Model on the 1/5-Depleted Square Lattice

We study the $S>1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the 1/5-depleted square lattice as a function of the ratio of the intra-plaquette coupling to the inter-plaquette coupling. Using stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we numerically identify three quantum phases, including the dimer phase, Néel phase and plaquette valence bond solid phase. We also obtain the accurate quantum critical points that belong to the O(3) universality class using the large-scale finite-size scaling. Most importantly, we study the dynamic spin structure factors of different phases, which can be measured by inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The low-energy excitations can be explained as triplons in the dimer phase and plaquette valence bond solid phase. While in the Néel phase, the more prominent magnon mode can be found as the spin magnitude increases. Furthermore, we find a broader continuum at smaller $S$, which may be the dynamical signature of nearly deconfined spinon excitations.

Fractional and composite excitations of antiferromagnetic quantum spin trimer chains

Using quantum Monte Carlo, exact diagonalization and perturbation theory, we study the spectrum of the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg trimer chain by varying the ratio $g=J_2/J_1$ of the intertrimer and intratrimer coupling strengths. The doublet ground states of trimers form effective interacting $S=1/2$ degrees of freedom described by a Heisenberg chain. Therefore, the conventional two-spinon continuum of width $\propto J_1$ when $g=1$ evolves into to a similar continuum of width $\propto J_2$ when $g\to 0$. The intermediate-energy and high-energy modes are termed \emph{doublons} and \emph{quartons} which fractionalize with increasing $g$ to form the conventional spinon continuum. In particular, at $g \approx 0.716$, the gap between the low-energy spinon branch and the high-energy band with mixed doublons, quartons, and spinons closes. These features should be observable in inelastic neutron scattering experiments if a quasi-one-dimensional quantum magnet with the linear trimer structure and $J_2<J_1$ can be identified. Our results may open a window for exploring the high-energy fractional excitations.

Dynamical properties of the Haldane chain with bond disorder

By using Lanczos exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo combined with stochastic analytic continuation, we study the dynamical properties of the $S=1$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with different strengths of bond disorder. In the weak disorder region, we find weakly coupled bonds which can induce additional low-energy excitation below the one-magnon mode. As the disorder increases, the average Haldane gap closes at $δ_Δ\sim 0.5$ with more and more low-energy excitations coming out. After the critical disorder strength $δ_c\sim 1$, the system reaches a random-singlet phase with prominent sharp peak at $ω=0$ and broad continuum at $ω>0$ of the dynamic spin structure factor. In addition, we analyze the distribution of random spin domains and numerically find three kinds of domains hosting effective spin-1/2 quanta or spin-1 sites in between. These "spins" can form the weakly coupled long-range singlets due to quantum fluctuation which contribute to the sharp peak at $ω=0$.

Identification of Magnetic Interactions and High-field Quantum Spin Liquid in $α$-RuCl$_3$

The frustrated magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ constitutes a fascinating quantum material platform that harbors the intriguing Kitaev physics. However, a consensus on its intricate spin interactions and field-induced quantum phases has not been reached yet. Here we exploit multiple state-of-the-art many-body methods and determine the microscopic spin model that quantitatively explains major observations in $α$-RuCl$_3$, including the zigzag order, double-peak specific heat, magnetic anisotropy, and the characteristic M-star dynamical spin structure, etc. According to our model simulations, the in-plane field drives the system into the polarized phase at about 7 T and a thermal fractionalization occurs at finite temperature, reconciling observations in different experiments. Under out-of-plane fields, the zigzag order is suppressed at 35 T, above which, and below a polarization field of 100 T level, there emerges a field-induced quantum spin liquid. The fractional entropy and algebraic low-temperature specific heat unveil the nature of a gapless spin liquid, which can be explored in high-field measurements on $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Amplitude Mode in Quantum Magnets via Dimensional Crossover

We investigate the amplitude (Higgs) mode associated with longitudinal fluctuations of the order parameter at the continuous spontaneous symmetry breaking phase transition. In quantum magnets, due to the fast decay of the amplitude mode into low-energy Goldstone excitations, direct observation of this mode represents a challenging task. By focusing on a quasi-one-dimensional geometry, we circumvent the difficulty and investigate the amplitude mode in a system of weakly coupled spin chains with the help of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, stochastic analytic continuation, and a chain-mean field approach combined with a mapping to the field-theoretic sine-Gordon model. The amplitude mode is observed to emerge in the longitudinal spin susceptibility in the presence of a weak symmetry-breaking staggered field. A conventional measure of the amplitude mode in higher dimensions, the singlet bond mode, is found to appear at a lower than the amplitude mode frequency. We identify these two excitations with the second (first) breather of the sine-Gordon theory, correspondingly. In contrast to higher-dimensional systems, the amplitude and bond order fluctuations are found to carry significant spectral weight in the quasi-1D limit.

Exact diagonalization study of the anisotropic Heisenberg model related to YbMgGaO$_4$

Employing exact diagonalization, we systematically study the anisotropic Heisenberg model which is related to rare-earth triangular-lattice materials. We probe its full 3D phase diagram afresh and identify a large region of quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase which can extend to the QSL region of the $J_1$--$J_2$ triangular Heisenberg model. Furthermore, we explore the magnetization curves of different phases and reproduce the 1/3-magnetization plateau in the quantum spin liquid phase region. More importantly, to study the possible chemical disorders in real materials, we consider the randomness of exchange interactions and find no spin glass order. And there is a large region of random-singlet phase which contains strongly random spin networks, dominated by two-spin singlets, four-spin singlets and other singlet domains. Our comprehensive ED study can give detailed insightful understanding of the microscopic Hamiltonian related to the YbMgGaO$_4$ and some other related rare-earth triangular-lattice materials.

Correlation-induced insulating topological phases at charge neutrality in twisted bilayer graphene

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) provides a unique framework to elucidate the interplay between strong correlations and topological phenomena in two-dimensional systems. The existence of multiple electronic degrees of freedom -- charge, spin, and valley -- gives rise to a plethora of possible ordered states and instabilities. Identifying which of them are realized in the regime of strong correlations is fundamental to shed light on the nature of the superconducting and correlated insulating states observed in the TBG experiments. Here, we use unbiased, sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations to solve an effective interacting lattice model for TBG at charge neutrality. Besides the usual cluster Hubbard-like repulsion, this model also contains an assisted hopping interaction that emerges due to the non-trivial topological properties of TBG. Such a non-local interaction fundamentally alters the phase diagram at charge neutrality, gapping the Dirac cones even for infinitesimally small interaction. As the interaction strength increases, a sequence of different correlated insulating phases emerge, including a quantum valley Hall state with topological edge states, an intervalley-coherent insulator, and a valence bond solid. The charge-neutrality correlated insulating phases discovered here provide the sought-after reference states needed for a comprehensive understanding of the insulating states at integer fillings and the proximate superconducting states of TBG.

Evidence for the topological order in a kagome antiferromagnet

A Z2 quantum spin liquid hosts one of the simplest topological orders and exhibits many exotic properties due to long-range quantum entanglements. Its elementary excitations are anyons such as spinons carrying fractionalized spin quantum number and visons carrying emergent Z2 gauge flux. However, experimental detection of these anyons remains elusive. The difficulties lie not only in the fact that there exists few candidates for Z2 quantum spin liquids but also in that visons are magnetically inert hence immune to available experimental techniques. Here we have studied the spin excitations and specific heats of kagome-lattice antiferromagnet Cu$_4$(OH)$_6$FBr and Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr, which consists of two-dimensional Cu$^{2+}$ kagome layers with either Cu$^{2+}$ or Zn$^{2+}$ ions in between. By combining the first principle calculations and inelastic neutron scattering data in the former, we show that the dominate couplings in Cu$_4$(OH)$_6$FBr are between the nearest neighbor spins within the kagome planes, and the kagome and interlayer spin systems are essentially decoupled above the antiferromagnetic transition temperature. The intrinsic spin excitations and specific heats of the kagome layers for Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr are thus derived by removing the contributions from the residual interlayer Cu$^{2+}$ magnetic impurities. Accordingly, the kagome spin system exhibits spin continuum with momentum-dependent spin gap and a large magnetic entropy at low temperature that is insensitive to magnetic field, which can be understood as the evidences of spinons and visons in this kagome quantum spin liquid candidate. Our results suggest the existence of the Z2 anyons in the material, and therefore provide a comprehensive set of evidences for the Z2 topological order in kagome quantum spin liquid and bring their choreographed entanglement dances to the stage of real materials.

Randomness induced spin-liquid-like phase in the spin-$1/2$ $J_1 - J_2$ triangular Heisenberg model

We study the effects of bond randomness in the spin-$1/2$ $J_1-J_2$ triangular Heisenberg model using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group. With increasing bond randomness, we identify a randomness induced spin-liquid-like phase without any magnetic order, dimer order, spin glass order, or valence-bond glass order. The finite-size scaling of gaps suggests the gapless nature of both spin triplet and singlet excitations, which is further supported by the broad continuum of dynamical spin structure factor. By studying the bipartite entanglement spectrum of the system on cylinder geometry, we identify the features of the low-lying entanglement spectrum in the spin-liquid-like phase, which may distinguish this randomness induced spin-liquid-like phase and the intrinsic spin liquid phase in the clean $J_1 - J_2$ triangular Heisenberg model. We further discuss the nature of this spin-liquid-like phase and the indication of our results for understanding spin-liquid-like materials with triangular-lattice structure.

Spin excitation spectra of the two dimensional $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model with a checkerboard structure

We study the spin excitation spectra of the two-dimensional spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model with a checkerboard structures using stochastic analytic continuation of the imaginary-time correlation function obtained from a quantum Monte Carlo simulation. The checkerboard models have two different antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions $J_{1}$ and $J_{2}$, and the tuning parameter $g$ is defined as $J_{2}/J_{1}$. The dynamic spin structure factors are systematically calculated in all phases of the models as well as at the critical points. To give a full understanding of the dynamic spectra, spin wave theory is employed to explain some features of numerical results, especially for the low-energy part. When $g$ is close to $1$, the features of the spin excitation spectra of each checkerboard model are roughly the same as those of the original square lattice antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, and the high-energy continuum among them is discussed. In contrast to the other checkerboard structures investigated in this paper, the $3\times 3$ checkerboard model has distinctive excitation features, such as a gap between a low-energy gapless branch and a gapped high-energy part that exists when $g$ is small. The gapless branch in this case can be regarded as a spin wave in N$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$el order formed by a "block spin" in each $3\times 3$ plaquette with an effective exchange interaction originating from renormalization. One unexpected finding is that the continuum also appears in this low-energy branch.

Visualizing a Bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological Phase in an Interacting Fermion Model

Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in free fermion and interacting bosonic systems have been classified, but the physical phenomena of interacting fermionic SPT phases have not been fully explored. Here, employing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the edge physics of a bilayer Kane-Mele-Hubbard model with zigzag ribbon geometry. Our unbiased numerical results show that the fermion edge modes are gapped out by interaction, while the bosonic edge modes remain gapless at the $(1+1)d$ boundary, before the bulk quantum phase transition to a topologically trivial phase. Therefore, finite fermion gaps both in the bulk and on the edge, together with the robust gapless bosonic edge modes, prove that our system becomes an emergent bosonic SPT phase at low energy, which is, for the first time, directly observed in an interacting fermion lattice model.

Diagnosis of interaction-driven topological phase via exact diagonalization

We propose a general scheme for diagnosing interaction-driven topological phases in the weak interaction regime using exact diagonalization (ED). The scheme comprises the analysis of eigenvalues of the point-group operators for the many-body eigenstates and the correlation functions for physical observables to extract the symmetries of the order parameters and the topological numbers of the underlying ground states at the thermodynamic limit from a relatively small size system afforded by ED. As a concrete example, we investigate the interaction effects on the half-filled spinless fermions on the checkerboard lattice with a quadratic band crossing point. Numerical results support the existence of a spontaneous quantum anomalous Hall phase purely driven by a nearest-neighbor weak repulsive interaction, separated from a nematic Mott insulator phase at strong repulsive interaction by a first-order phase transition.

Quantum critical point of Dirac fermion mass generation without spontaneous symmetry breaking

We study a lattice model of interacting Dirac fermions in $(2+1)$ dimension space-time with an SU(4) symmetry. While increasing interaction strength, this model undergoes a {\it continuous} quantum phase transition from the weakly interacting Dirac semimetal to a fully gapped and nondegenerate phase without condensing any Dirac fermion bilinear mass operator. This unusual mechanism for mass generation is consistent with recent studies of interacting topological insulators/superconductors, and also consistent with recent progresses in lattice QCD community.

Bona fide interaction-driven topological phase transition in correlated SPT states

It is expected that the interplay between non-trivial band topology and strong electron correlation will lead to very rich physics. Thus a controlled study of the competition between topology and correlation is of great interest. Here, employing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we provide a concrete example of the Kane-Mele-Hubbard (KMH) model on an AA stacking bilayer honeycomb lattice with inter-layer antiferromagnetic interaction. Our simulation identified several different phases: a quantum spin-Hall insulator (QSH), a $xy$-plane antiferromagnetic Mott insulator ($xy$-AFM) and an inter-layer dimer-singlet insulator (dimer-singlet). Most importantly, a bona fide topological phase transition between the QSH and the dimer-singlet insulators, purely driven by the inter-layer antiferromagnetic interaction is found. At the transition, the spin and charge gap of the system close while the single-particle excitations remain gapped, which means that this transition has no mean field analogue and it can be viewed as a transition between bosonic SPT states. At one special point, this transition is described by a $(2+1)d$ $O(4)$ nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) with {\it exact} $SO(4)$ symmetry, and a topological term at {\it exactly} $Θ= π$. Relevance of this work towards more general interacting SPT states is discussed.
